So you may remember Anduin as the golden boy, the knight in shining armor just a few years back and now he is looking like a 15 years older wretched blood elf dehydrated and looking like he was just saved from the desert, what really happened to this guy?
Some would say the Shadowlands happened, which technically is true but if you missed the storylinestoryline and some other hints from Dragonflight as well, let's bridge that gap. He has been missing for over 5 years and has apparently lost his light which is going to be a massive part of at least the next 2 expansions. So what is even going on with Anduin?

I think the War Within cinematic is setting the stage for Anduin to gain closure from his PTSD, and become the leader the Alliance will need to face the Void in "Midnight". Imagine Anduin coming face to face with Xal'atath sometime late in War Within, saying "You know what? I've faced worse." and blasting her in the face with a good Smite.

I would go for even bigger plot twist. I think Anduin would need a guide to overcome that darkness in him from Shadowlands. The best teacher for that will be Sylvanas Windrunner. Why her? Cus she knows how much darkness can dwell in soul and that it can twist one. On the outher hand she needs someone that will bring some light to her existence and at the same time can help restore Anduin power of light. I thought as well about Alleria help Anduin but i think her knowledge about void however big won't help him, but could help players in journey. My 3rd guess (propably wrong as those 2 before) will be that Anduin would undergo a change of class. Here is 3 visions. First: he'll go warrior as his father Varrian. Second: if by some sort of miracle light return to him that would bring a chance for him to become paladin under Turalyon guide. Third: I think he still has his shadow powers (as a priest) so maybe some sort of new class upcoming with void powers.

As someone who mostly gravitates towards the Horde, I like Anduin, he's kinda like a more strongly willed Arthas (before he became a death knight) in the sense of being a weilder of the light being manipulated then controlled by dark powers. And although Anduin wasn't able to break the grasp of the jailer over him on his own, it seemed like he almost did at a few points, and rejected the immense power it granted him. I don't think he's a crybaby. This dude's been through the wringer several times over, and when called upon to save Azeroth once again, he accepts. Sounds pretty honorable to me.

I love how some "masculine" people give Anduin so much shit, how he's weak, naive and unworthy as a king. Meanwhile all around him are warmongerers that try to fight everyone they see. Or schemers that lie and ruin so many life's. And there is Anduin, someone who wants to break the cycle of hatred around him. And is as transparent as possible, even with his enemies, giving them the benefit of doubt. Because he has seen it's not always as it seems with people's actions. Doing all that, through betrayal after betrayal, and seeing horrors at even would break God's. Then somehow remain intact mentally, is more strength than majority of the world's population could ever have. I find Anduin as a good example of sticking to your principles to the end

Anduin is a strong willed character, for me, done right. Just him actually trying to solve it, by being alone, but letting others know that, is a strong mind. And not pretending he's fine, like nothing wrong happened. How it ruined him, admitting something is wrong is brave and needed. While also putting himself to the side, because he knows, even if he hasn't fully healed yet, if he ever can heal fully, the world needs him.

Thank you! I've been telling people that this is a textbook PTSD reaction. The guy has been through some guano and everything about him in that situation screams it if you know what you're looking at. My little brother was a Marine in the 1980s. He did some things, saw some stuff, and to this day still has the haunting memories. I've seen that stare, that over-reaction (seemingly) to things that didn't need that reaction (in anyone elses' mind but his) and the minute I saw Anduin's eyes, I knew. So yeah, great analysis, I just hope the folks realize this isn't the end of that type of reaction and I'm going to be very interested in how they deal with that and the storylines.

@@Marcustheseer The very act of mind control means you have to wrest control from the person. That is abuse. And the stronger the person, the more force that has to be applied. Think about how tough this "kid" was, losing his mom, his dad (twice, three if you count the other half, LoGar coming back and having to fuse. He's not soft by any means even before this attempt, and tears are not weakness, they're an outlet for emotions. Have you ever known someone who got so angry the were going to kill someone, right up until the time and then backed off. All that pent up emotion has to go somewhere, channeled into hitting a brick wall with your fist a few times (breaking the fist, most likely), raging so much at future upsets that you pull the steering wheel off the column in the car (my husband did that back in the day). But some people will handle the emotions by letting them out, a cry. It's not unmanly, it's human, and a damn sight better than beating the first person you can reach.

Posing a strong will is inspiring to other people to keep fighting whatever they need to. What it looks to me is actually that men used to be able to be vulnerable in private with their family, almost exclusively with their partner, and they would be able to cry and release stress appropriately, but nowadays we have such a fucked up notion of family that we destroy every manifestation of it everywhere. So many broken homes everywhere could explain why there's so many people like OC described.

Anduin is one of the most developed and human characters in the game. He actually displays emotions. Plus, he is also the only character that we (the gamers) got to grow up with. Everyone else in the lore is already an adult, he’s the only character we’ve got to see grow into an adult from a child, while we grew in our own lives. I think he’s gonna carry the next couple of expansions, the lore has enough bad ass warriors and cool fantasy characters, they can write that up in a day. Anduin doesn’t need to become some Chad, I imagine when he recovers the light he’ll be strong af. During the Blizzcon, they made an emphasis on the old world and going back to it. I think Anduin is going to recover the light, and use that to mend the world, reverting it back to pre-cata. This will probably make him age rapidly, and by the end of the saga he’s going to be an old man because he used so much of his power.

In a real world, not everyone acts or thinks the same, so even without knowing all this background information for Anduin I never thought it was "bad" that he showed emotion. Just because emotions are involved in a story, it doesn't just automatically make the story bad, what makes a story bad is the skill of the writers involved and how they use those emotions to move the story forward and enhance it.

He looked more conflicted than broken. However, I think that people is getting tired about personal feeling taking the light spot in WoW narrative. The dialogue in the cinematic (incredible visuals) is clunky and forced and sound like SW prequel trilogy.

@@justinb7494 I don't think that's how it works, but more as the psychological state of the wielder that he can wield the light, is material in wielding the light, and most of the time, those who lose their powers of the Light, often does not wield the Light at all, rather than they're incapable of wielding it. He sees the light as a force of good, and is thus voluntarily inhibiting himself. The justification that Light magic is somehow sentient in choosing its wielders fall into the cracks whenever you see the Scarlet Crusade. The light is just another cosmic force, and the 'sentient' light is either just the whispers of a Naaru, or something similar, or that the Light is exerting its influence on its wielders like the Void, to slowly pull you closer and closer to its side, but nevertheless is actually unable to stop you from wielding Light Magic, since Magic in WoW, seems to be tied to the mana pool, coz if it isn't then logically, priest, and paladins should just be spamming spells.

Just like you and I, Anduin is human. Playing this game for over a decade, there have 100% been zones or moments even I had chills go down my spine. Leveling up in Duskwood, Ghost lands, and Felwood, seeing the horrors inside Naxxramas, seeing peers and heroes get poisoned to death by Forsaken. Now, we just played it. Anduin lived *through* it all.

The thing about Anduin is... he's not a paladin. He might be wearing plate armor, but it's supposed to represent him stepping into his father's massive shoes. Just look at Varian! Even having lost his armor, he's a huge guy! A warrior through and through, forged in battle. Anduin, however, took after his mother, Tiffin. He learned to wield the light not to use it on the battlefield, but as a healer. Before BFA, he didn't wear armor, he wore cloth robes, ones a medic might wear while rushing between wounded soldiers, or helping at the church to cure the sick. He's always been a kind, compassionate character, sticking to his values to the very end. His whole monologue with Garrosh that ended with him being crushed beneath the Divine Bell was him begging him, giving him one last chance to change, and he basically got told to shut up. EVERYONE tells him he's soft and weak, canon characters and playerbase alike, but he continues to stick to his principles. Through thick and thin, he's done so. Shadowlands was dogshit, but Anduin waking up to find he'd killed and murdered and corrupted not by his own will had to have been horrible for him to experience. It was like Teldrassil all over. He might not have been the one to kill them, but he was the one who let them die. He didn't fight hard enough. I'm excited to see where he goes next.

I really don't understand why people would interpret this scene as whingey/crybaby material, this guy is clearly suffering from PTSD. Right before he raises his sword, you can hear the sound blacking out, like Anduin's mind is blacking out, throwing him into survival mode. The artwork is absolutely phenomenal once more. I really wish we could get a WoW movie like this. (With the actual people we meet in the game, not some weird prologue. Henry Cavill as Varian Wrynn, anyone? 😉)

There's a problem in the narrazione tecnique: we have seen him face the loss of his family, and deal with it (legion and BFA) and now we have been told that he's seen something that has broken him. The problem is that it happened offscreen, and in that last SL he was more conflicted than broken, and he made no reference to his losses. This is why is not easy to empathise with the character: we are not talking about a person we've been talking to, it's a character we get to know everything about through (poor) narration.
