What happened to all the small TVs?

While all the big players in the TV market landscape are going bigger, brighter, and more transparent, we wanted to know…what happened to small screens?? This CES, Verge producers, Andrew Marino and Becca Farsace, set their sights on finding the smallest screens being showcased at one of the the largest tech conventions in the world. #CES2024 #Technology #TV

Smaller screens cant be marked up for a huge margin. You can mark up tablets, laptops, etc. But just displays that will hook into whatever you want and have radio and a digital tv tuner built in? Not easy to charge obscene prices for Thank you Supersonic for tackling that part of the market.

living in earthquake country, i have a 9" atsc TV in my emergency kit. when the net goes down, your devices wont work. with am/fm terrestrial radio, and OTA atsc, you can still get content. and it works great in the car.

Big thumbs up for talking about small TV's. I live in an apartment built in 1980 so not designed for today entertainment center focus on audio and video. So a 32" TV is about as big as I could fit in the limit space the apartment is designed for in the living room. I can see on the wall in the bedroom where previous tenants had a large TV in there, but kind of a small room for a big TV. Also looking at small TV most don't have the features of the BIG TV's. I think I'm probably going just get a big monitor for my computer and use it as my TV as well.

Damn it’s crazy I remember growing up we had a 27” CRT in the family room and that was considered big. As a kid I was in awe of the 32” and 36” screens that we were never able to afford. 13” screens were cheap and ubiquitous.

You can use a monitor. TV tuners does not matter, when you can use a cable box or a streaming device. But they just don't have speakers. But a sound bar can fix that. Some people need a small TV, like a 32 inch. They can be in a college dorm, in a small, they have a small apartment, small bedroom, RV. There many reason why people may want a smaller TV.

Not to mention personal tastes and decor. Some people want a TV but don't want it to consume and dominate the living room. TVs aren't pretty, and while there have been attempts to fix that, like the Frame line, or rollable TVs they're not really ideal solutions.

Actually, the most major problem with portable TVs in the modern day is the fact that over-the-air signals broadcast in ATSC digital which is far more dependent on having a strong and steady signal to stay locked on to and keep providing a clear and uninterrupted TV signal. Even the slightest movement of an antenna will affect the clarity of an ATSC signal and could interrupt the channel of cause it to drop out. There is also the issue than an ATSC signal must be strong enough as well to even be able to lock on to in the first place.

I had a 38" TV that I was perfectly happy with, but then my brother gave me his "old" 52" TV and I gave the "smaller" TV to my sister (her old TV was really old and not working well anymore). I still have the 21" TV my wife bought for our bedroom, our first flatscreen TV. That one is really big enough for most purposes. This TV in the living room is great for movies, but it already feels a lot like one of those "conversation walls" from Fahrenheit 451. A lot of times, I do watch TV on my phone or computer because I really don't need a big screen for what I'm doing. Kudos to SuperSonic for offering products more along the lines of what I'm looking for. This reminds me of the complaints about the iMac because the 24" display "isn't big enough." Yeah, it is, for most purposes.

This is great! I think it's such a good question to have asked, judging by all the company responses. But I do think, anything smaller than 32" isn't likely useful to anyone in a household context. And 32" is still well-loved, because all the Samsung Frames still come in that size.

Holding out for a new 42incher from Sony later this year. I agree, too much emphasis on larger screens . The reality is all these innovations in TV tech are best suited for larger screens. The TV manufacturers feel the technology would be wasted on smaller screens.

I think one of the main reasons that this product category has now become redundant is the advent of TV networks streaming their channels live on the internet. So effectively, you can watch TV on your smartphone.

My family have a nook in our living room that we really like having the TV in. But the last two refresh cycles have been really difficult, because we want a futureproofed TV that'll last but the area can only physically fit a 45" TV max. Sure we could mount a TV and have it fill the wall and go bananas, but sticking to the space constraint it was really hard this past year to pick a good TV with proper HDMI specs, 4K & HDR. Just about made it work this time, but it's going to be very difficult next time around. Glad to see promotion of different sizes for different spaces.

I'm running into this same problem trying to replace a TV in the kitchen. The space can fit a 24" TV, though 27" might be possible if I change out the wall mount. I bought a pricy LG and the picture didn't look as good as the 12 year old TV it was replacing. I'm finding not many options on the market and stores pretty much laugh at me when I ask to see some on display. I might have to settle on a Monitor but with a remote control for audio it gets more complicated again.

LCD fabs are being upgraded / replaced with newer and newer generations that allow for larger motherglass, which allows for larger TV panels to be sliced up. As consumer demands grow for larger TVs, there's just not enough demand to waste cutting lots of small panels. So... "Why?" follow the money. and the money isn't in small TVs. That SuperSonic brand is... oof. All rebadged noname junk. Like you mentioned too.. Tablets have pretty much replaced the "small kitchen tv", sure they don't have a tuner, but how many are still needing a tuner?! Most just stream stuff, YT, etc. And those tablets will have way better screens and processors/UIs than those junk small old tvs.

Tablet and a stand... no idea why I'd want another TV for such use cases as it's not portable to the same degree either way. I move my tablet/stand pair around in the kitchen while cooking - first at the sink, then mise en place, then finally at the stove. Anyway maybe it's different in the states but at least in Europe most cable providers have well, a cable. Their portability is massively diminished due to this. Some of the solutions in the video are pretty damn cool... but far from the portable dream I already have with my tablet (which almost certainly unlike these solutions actually has an app from my cable provider).

Best small TV I found is from Best Buy. I have a 22inch Full HD non smart tv from Insignia for my room I bought few years ago. They no longer make that model but replaced with a 24inch Full HD Fire TV for $89.99 on sale. Best value you can buy. The speakers on this is better than my 50 inch Samsung tv.

A 40" TV is the perfect size for my living room but only 43" now available. BUT 32" is the IDEAL kitchen size TV but there are hardly any 32" decent display quality TVs released, just cheap brand ones. More 32" TVs need to be released.

I don't understand why you would want to own a small T.V if it wasn't also a portable T.V.
