Thank you for covering this Brother, your description of Devin was as close as I could have said myself. I was 2 years older than him but I grew up with Devin in Tonganoxie Ks and played football with him every year. He was a straight-up good guy, no drugs or anything stupid and always had a smile on his face. Whatever happened to cause this was no fault of his own, no way no how. I'm not sure why he was called home so early, and I never will. I wanted to Thank You for presenting his story in a positive disposition because that's how he was, a good hard working American Man!

Hi Jeffery, thanks for adding your comment. In a lot of these kind of stories you hear, it’s easy to ‘forget’ these are real people and real families that have been affected. I usually scour the comments to see if someone who actually knew the individual writes something about them, because then it feels like less of a story and more reality. I’m sorry for the loss of a fellow peer, and thanks again for bringing your own memory of him for all of us to read.

thanks for sharing! Do truck drivers from America have this device measuring their stops and how many km did they drive and so on? -it's called tachometer I think?- I am from Europe and here it is prohibited to drive more hours than the officially stablished time.

Me and a few of my buddies ran into a trucker at a bar a few years back. Poor guy looked so lost and was just sitting alone. So we went over and sat with him. Turns out his truck had broken down (something with the transmission) and he was stuck in our town for a few days and had never been here, and didn't know anyone. He told us the only thing he had was money. We told him not to announce that, then we took turns buying rounds, playing pool and darts, just generally giving the guy a good night. He was super grateful and a really awesome dude. He looked pretty intimidating, like the dude in the story, but he was a great person. We got him a cab to his hotel and at some point I must have given him my number. Cause I didn't think I'd ever hear from him again, but about a week later I got a call and it was the trucker. He just wanted me to know his truck got fixed, he had finished his run and was finally back home. He thanked me for giving him a fun night out and for just hanging out with him. I never heard from him again, but I will say, the stories he told us and the places he had seen were crazy. Mad respect to all the truck drivers out there. Never heard from that guy again, but wherever you are my man, stay safe.

Yep exactly, I was an otr trucker for 11 years and I just quit my job a little over a month ago and I don't think I'll ever do it again. I'll do trucking again I mean, but not otr. I'm almost 35 now, and the past 11 yrs flew by, and 70% of that time was spent just sitting in a semi truck. Finally started getting really tired of it a few months ago and then quit the job in September. Have not looked for a new job yet, decided I'm gonna take the whole fall/winter off and live off of some of my savings, and then probably start a local driving job in spring, but a job where I come home every day, not an otr gig. Are you otr or local? Owner-op or company? Stay safe out there driver.

I went out with a buddy of mine who drove for JB Hunt for a week and we went all over Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana. From experience I can tell you its much more than a job. You live and sleep in the truck, driving 14 hours a day maybe talk to someone on the phone or at the loading dock and wash, rinse and repeat. It gave me a lot of respect for truckers, who are really the backbone of this country. True professionals.

OTR truck driver here. I can honestly say it’s the toughest job I’ve ever had. Much respect for all my fellow drivers.

16 year trucker here , saw many horrific things out there from another driver getting stabbed at truck stop in AL to stopping at a rest area in WY and hearing a chain saw at 2 am . Since only a small black car and another truck there I knew something wasn’t right and quietly got back to my truck and called 911 next day the trucker and his wife were found cut up but officers got there to late and black car was gone. Way to much goes on out there and people are just weird. Truckers are targeted a lot and after a look into how many are killed every year a law was passed that we can carry with a license. Many companies don’t allow it but I carried anyway ,rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6

I stopped at a rest area back in the early 90's when a man standing near the ladies bathroom asked me to grab some toilet paper for him. So I ran in but then thought to myself, oh my god, how stupid, this guy might kill me. So I headed back toward the entrance door just as he was about to walk in when he said, "I musn't go much longer without seeing." I said, "Excuse me?". He repeated himself then took a step closer to me. He was now in the light and had semen all over his face! I ran back to my car and was later told that rest areas were a haven for...well, I'm sure you can guess. I was really young and naive. Things could have turned out really bad for me.

That's true. There can be no doubt a good man driving for a living doesn't get out and shoot people because he can. The drivers I know, have too much to lose for them ever to be inspired to such stupidity . Aside from the fact that having a job to do makes you focus on the right thing and getting home is the greatest place to get to in the whole country. Hours off are never really long enough however. The million mile stare not withstanding.

Turning a corner and seeing a huge truck hurling towards you has got to be one of the most heart stopping moments ever.

As a Trucker myself, I have a theory from experience. When working long hours, mixed with stress and anxiety over delivering on time. Its hard to shake of, and find peace of mind to be able to sleep. When you continue ignoring the signs of fatigue, and cut down on your sleep. After five days, you start seeing things and even hallucinations. This is why no trucker I know of, would press on. Some do ignore the dangers of being so exhausted and driving. But this never ends wel. I think he went over the edge and started hallucinating even without doing drugs. 😮

Maybe so, but the irratic jaw movements and grinding teeth, coupled with the fact that he couldn't sleep are all indicative of being spun out. The drug only stays in your system for three days so he could have been a part time user just to push through on some runs.If he scored a little at the truck stop and used on top of already being sleep deprived, well there ya go. Just my theory.

I think some people are all about the end product so to speak (food on shop floor shelves, gas in the pumps, etc, etc) that they don't really appreciate how it all arrived there. As a kid I'd often travel to ski areas with my dad where he'd work on grooming equipment. Along the way I looked forward to the conversations with truckers through lights. Flashes back and forth, 'I'd like to pass' "Go ahead" 'Thank you' "You're welcome". 70s and 80s, maps and memory. Man, it was awesome. And the TRUCKS! Glorious beasts. Dad gave me a deep respect for truckers. The things you do and put up with to bring us stuff... and stuff comes in pretty handy. Thank you.

My father is a truck driver, was in a few accidents, but I'm grateful that he's alive to support my family.

My uncle was a truck driver and I understand how hard it can be. The worst thing he experienced (that I know of) was when a teenage boy committed “self deletion” by jumping in front of his rig. It really messed him up and he had mental health and addiction issues for the rest of his life. I don’t doubt that they were there even before that event, but I imagine that it, combined with the rough work life, exacerbated them.

Extreme sleep deprivation. I’m a owner operator trucker and ex army veteran. I learned from both careers how serious sleep deprivation can be.

I agree I have occasional bouts of insomnia and at one time in my life, it was really bad and I’d go days without sleep and the psychosis set in. At a certain point, you stop feeling tired and just go full mania and psychosis and that sounds like that’s what happened to him.

As a trucker for 12 years so far, I can say that going mad is a reality. We live in this roaming bed in a box, being this alone can definitely get to you. sometimes you just got to put your foot down and say "I'm stopping here. I'm sleeping and I dont care what you think" I do strive to be professional, to be reliable but yeah you gotta look out for your self in the end, take a break. go home. get out of the truck. go do vacationy things. dont let your mind get the better of you. Love you all, fellow 18 wheelers, and make sure you all keep the greasy side down and the shiny side up.

I remember this airing on Unsolved Mysteries around 1998. I am wondering did they ever found him. I guess the story of him is close to home a lot because my father has been driving trucks since 1992 and he stopped in December of 2020 or 2021 due to a bad wreck in his truck. He wasn’t at fault but the people hit was that ultimately took their life. My father hasn’t been right since and gave up completely driving at that point. Shout out to all truck drivers because without you guys and women, we would not have what we need to survive and for that, thank you so much.

Extreme stress and sleep deprivation in and of themselves can absolutely wreak havoc. Add the possibility that he may have ingested an unusually high amount of caffeine to meet his deadline, and it's easy to imagine he suffered grave psychological symptoms.

To all the truckers out there watching this episode and reading the comments, I just wanted to let you know how thankful I am to have you guys do what you do, we would not survive without you, everything that are in our houses came because of you guys, respect for all truckers out there, love you guys

wow, just noticed there are almost 8 million subscribers. That's amazing and something to be proud of. I remember first finding the channel just right before covid showed up and there were only a few thousand followers. John would post at least 5 days a week so during lock down i would have my cup of coffee in the morning and listen to johns story of the day. Doesn't even seem like that was over 3 years ago. congrats on the tremendous success , you have definitely earned it. You're probably the best story teller i've ever heard.

This one really got to me. Mainly because out of all the mysteries, with this one i can see how this may have happened. In his desperation and anger to finish his route he went into the diner for some food, some fellow truck driver gave him "something" to help him make his route. Instead of sleeping after his meal he knew he was going to be awake because of the drug and didnt even attempt to sleep after his meal. He checked in with his boss before the drugs took hold to cover his back. The fact that he was 100% clean means the reaction would be that much stronger. The fact that he was a big dude means the other trucker gave him a large dose based on body size, but he had no tolerance. The fact that he was sleep deprived and exhausted when he took it means he would be locked out of sleep for days on end. Psychotic break induced by sleep deprivation and overdose. Poor guy got pushed too hard. I feel so bad for the trucker in this story.

That's exactly what happened, I don't know why people try to imply anything else. He knew he couldn't sleep, drugs among truckers are commonplace and he wanted to keep going and get home quicker without sleep. There is hardly a worse place to take a new drug than behind a steering wheel of a 10 ton truck except maybe an aircraft. There is a reason you (ideally) have a sober person with you when you take a new drug, someone who know the dosage and has experience. Some drugs who are perfectly safe for you can be a nightmare for someone else due to genetics. This guy took something in a too high dose, possibly contaminated, exhausted, with zero experience of drugs AND had a bad trip. I don't want to speak ill about the dead but that is not a recipe to get home to your family quicker. It's only luck he just took himself out.

My dad was a trucker for a while, and still kind of is (CDL driver for a construction company now). People say you sit on your ass all day, but you’re also in charge of a potentially giant metal death machine. It’s hard work and truckers are the back bone of this country. Thank you all truckers!

People underestimate truck and busdrivers. I'm a busdriver myself, it annoys the crap out of me when people say "All you do is sitting around all day, it's not hard work". O right..cause you at the office are having to pay full attention your whole shift long right? What happens when you lose focus behind a computer? O no you made a typing error, o noes end of the world. You know what happens when a truck/busdriver losses focus for a moment? They can kill someone. Next to that, I have to deal with a lot of bikers (I'm from the Netherlands) and cars who just don't care about the traffic rules, getting cut off by cars and bikes all the time. Per shift I save a dozen lives each time by me paying attention and knowing how to look further then my windshield. Ontop of that there is a whole lot more aggression in traffic were people freak out and pull the most insane shit cause they get angry at you (even though they broke the rules themselves). It also happens in the bus that we are dealing with more and more aggression. But sure, I have a easy job sitting around all day mhm. As a truckdriver you also have to do unloading and all that crap, those guys have it much tougher then I do, I just have to bring people from busstop to busstop. They are dealing with unloading if they have to drive between stores to supply them and generally make way more hours then I do, at least I get to be home every day.

My dad was a trucker. We live in Ohio and a manager of a restaurant noticed him slumped over his wheel in New York. He passed of a massive heart attack. He use to tell me stories of other truckers going mad. It's rough being a trucker, it's stressful, strainful, ur lonely, my dad was always gone, to always make sure we was stable and it took his life in the end. He died 2 months after his 42 birthday, 24 years ago.

What a sad story. I feel so bad for Devon, his family, friends, and all who loved him.

Psychosis was my immediate thought when I heard “he couldn’t sleep”. Whether the sleep deprivation is initially caused by drug or not, it’s what causes psychosis and it’s very scary! I’ve seen it happen. I feel so sorry for Devin’s family 😢

I'm glad you mention sleep deprivation. I was an OTR driver from '92 to '17 and have been thru sleep deprivation instances several times. The things that you see, smell and feel are totally real and yet not there at all. To think that it would be something that could break your mind isn't out of the realm of possibility. I drove for thirty years, 3.5 million miles and saw extraordinary things. Both real and imagined

Sleep deprivation is incredibly dangerous for your physical and mental health, and can cause hallucinations and psychosis. Not saying that is actually what caused this bizarre situation with Devin, but it isn't impossible as far as theories about the case go. Really scary stuff, regardless of what you believe actually happened.

@@brendanward2991 Well, for starters, he died. Scavengers did what scavengers do, and his skull was found while the rest of his remains were not. It's not unheard of for only small remnants of missing persons to be discovered after years of exposure to wildlife the elements. I'm not saying that IS what happened, merely the possibility.

The amount of physical stress sleep deprivation causes on your body and mind is insane. I am a long haul driver and have had my share of times that I drove on little to no sleep for days. I can absolutely attest to the fact that you will begin hallucinating. You will absolutely be seeing things that are not there and not seeing things that are in fact there. There is absolutely no way to know what happened to this young man and we can only hope that he is at peace. My guess is that depending just how long he was without sleep, the stress of everything in his life may have just become so much that he snapped mentally and was no longer in touch with reality. Just because you are making it financially doesn't mean you are ok. Society has pushed us to think we must have large amounts of excess in order to be considered successful and some people truly commit to the attempt to achieve success that normal stresses in life are simply too much. Truly sad to think this man died all alone out in nature with most likely no real idea where he was, why he was there or potentially who he was.

Lack of sleep can cause Cognitive impairment, dementia and Sleep deprivation psychosis. Since he didn't do drugs and nothing in this story even remotely points to aliens, this seems to make the most sense.

I worked with Devin at Iowa Beef Processing down in Emporia back in the early eighties on the Round line and he quit to become a truck driver he was a really nice guy and a hard worker.

@brandonsmith2115 Yeah I'm not lying or anything I worked right next to him at the tables. He was a round trimmer and I was a knuckle trimmer which was taking the knee bone out of a roast. He actually accidentally cut me with his 8 inch knife when he pushed a round out onto the line after trimming it. Actually it was my fault I was not being safe and I pulled my knuckle off the line to trim it and I put my arm into his knife I got a scar and 8 stitches from that mistake lol.

@@carolinematusevich889 Yeah it was the hardest job I ever had and I loved every bit of it I was in the best shape of my life plus I worked with people from all over the world I worked with boat people that came from Vietnam in 70's you want to know about hard workers they are some of the most hardest working people I ever met. I was young and it was the fourth most dangerous job at the time and I worked at the number 1 beef Processing plant in the entire United States and I was very proud of the work I did there.

@@carolinematusevich889you're not wrong, but many parents confuse good parenting with a "hard work ethic". Your generation spent too much time at work and not enough time parenting their kids. You have nobody to blame but your own generation. How can you not see that? Parents are EXACTLY the reason kids are the way they are, unless they're just deviant outliers. You still see it in new parents. They're in the office 50 hours a week, drink on their off-time, and let their expensive, "hard-earned" iPads raise their kids.

My dad is a long haul trucker, he works a lot still and is gone for weeks at a time. I never understood when I was a kid, but I do now and appreciate his hard work even more. God bless truckers.

My dad and I went truck driving tonight it was honestly so hard we barely got any sleep we were running on only a couple hours of sleep than waking up early and staying up late to make sure we made it to our destination… it was a great time overall spending time with you dad ❤️

You know what I love so much about mr. Ballen's community? Here you can say that since nobody knows what really happened, aliens are just as good of an explanation as any, and nobody argues with it.

I know exactly what happened to Devin. I've been a tucker for 20yrs. He had what we call the Million mile stare. You drive so much, for long, that you lose your mind. It's part of the reason why we have required breaks now. But even still, some drivers come to the brink. There has been a few times that I had to tell Dispatchers & Brokers...Fuck you, I'm taking a break, I'm done.

My father drove semi for 50 yrs before he retired a few yrs ago. He would tell us stories about going to different states, Canada and Mexico. Made it sound so romantic. He was also gone for weeks at a time and drank heavily when he was home. His trucker buddies would tell stories about " the stare" and what it can do. I've got much respect for truckers and the shit they are put thru to get our produce and other goods to us.

White line fever can fuck you up too. It's the Aussie version of million mile stare. You drive for so long, following those lines becomes hypnotising and you can doze off or you can get tunnel vision. Either way, sleep deprivation mixed with driving is dangerous as fuck.

We kept track of our drive time on paper back then so it could be very easily falsified. Now we're all on a computer that cant be fudged per federal law and companies can't threaten drivers to keep going past their 11 hour limit.

I have to say-- The amount of good will and empathy for truck drivers in this comment section/community genuinely warms my heart to an extent I can't find words for. I'm not a truck driver, my Dad is-- He's 64 years old and the sh!t he deals with on a daily basis scares the living hell out of me. Thank you all for being kind to the truckers you interact with. ❤

I actually still don't quite know how to take all the people being supportive of us drivers. I'm so used to being cussed out, flipped off, cut off, brake checked, verbally abused and just in general treated like the world's biggest piece of garbage because God forbid the truck doesn't operate like a sports car. It's nice to see some appreciation and respect. There are also times where this is truly a great career.

I wish there was more education to car drivers on how trucks actually drive because people take for granted that a truck cannot just stop immediately when pressing the breaks, for example. They have blind spots that drivers forget about or don’t even realize. So many basic things that should be common sense that a lot of car drivers don’t appreciate it or understand!

I just want to thank you for telling these people's stories in a way that humanizes them. It would be too easy for someone like Devin to become the subject of mockery or judgment because of his bizarre actions, but you remind us that he was a real human being with a family, ambitions, and hopes. Besides that, you're a downright fantastic storyteller!

Possibly sleep deprivation, can cause hallucinations, mental instability. His jaw movements sound like amphetamine symptoms. Not saying illegal drugs, they have caffeine pills , or another trucker could have given him something he thought was perfectly legal. This is such a heartbreaking story. My heart goes out to the family !

Yeah sounds like he did meth for the first time trying to stay awake and started hallucinating bad. I had smoked a bong looking thing one time when I was hammered drunk, it ended up being meth and I had absolutely no ability to control my decision but was wide awake and constantly was doing something. Terrible and scary but I know that’s what he took

I’ve hallucinated from extreme sleep deprivation in the Marines and have observed many other people that were suffering from the same condition, and you can watch videos and read about it, it won’t make you lose your mind like this guy did or I did when we took meth.

As a former truck driver, sleep deprivation can do some crazy things, combined with stress levels being high, he very well could have had a psychotic break. Unfortunately, back in the days before new laws and elogs came in to affect, sleep deprivation was all too common. The poor man must have been in a horrible place. I hope his family is alright. Very sad story, thank you for covering it.

this is my theory as well. not a trucker but former military and sleep dep can make your brain do some weird shit. i've had moments where i was on 12-hour fireguard at 3AM, holding a pen, writing notes, and my brain blipped out for a second and when i looked down there was a full paragraph of perfectly grammatical and legibly written text that was just complete nonsense. i literally thought my fireguard partner had stolen my pen and written it down as a prank until i realized it was my own handwriting. if you're tired enough your brain will just microsleep on you with your eyes open and put your body on autopilot until you regain consciousness. even without the microsleeps it can narrow your focus down so far that you simply do not realize what you are looking at until long after the reaction window has closed - like staring down a car directly in front of you and not registering it as something you need to react to because the only thing there's room for in your brain is "i need to keep going" i've also road-tripped through that route before and it's just miles and miles and miles of nothing. it all looks the same and if you miss a turn it might be another 15 miles to the next exit where you can turn around. so my guess is, his brain went on autopilot and took a turn he wasn't supposed to take, he was out of it enough that he didn't realize he was on the wrong road until it actually started looking different, and either he didn't have the maps he needed to get himself back on the right route or he couldn't figure out where he was to start trying. he was exhausted but couldn't afford the time to sleep because he'd already lost god knows how much time on this side-route and would lose god knows how much more trying to get back, and no matter what he tried to do to get out of his situation it was constantly running the clock against that time pressure. there's a specific combination of deep frustration and helplessness that can send you right off the deep end on its own - combined with sleep deprivation, it could absolutely cause a full-on psychotic break.

Car still in drive with my foot on the break. I quick threw it in park and just sat there trying to think what happened. I worked a half hour away and had to take the highway to and from. I remember walking out of work but that’s it. Don’t remember walking to my car driving or pulling up to my house. Still one of the scariest moments I’ve experienced just coming to in my driveway

The most interesting part of this story to me is the ‘gibberish’ witnesses say Devon was speaking. Years after, a hiking witness who had come across Devon when he was lost, and heard his gibberish - years later, he would hear the ‘Sierra Sounds’ tapes and was amazed that it was what he remembered Devon was ‘speaking’ - the gibberish. If you look into the Sierra Sounds, it is utterly fascinating! Cheers!

Respect for the truck drivers. I witnessed a man die in front of me. A semi driving the opposite direction fell asleep, went off the road, and turned the truck back onto the road. The bed flipped and the poor man that died crashed into it. I can still smell the oil, garlic, and other smells. I asked him a few questions, his face showed pain and then went limp. Took a while for emt to show up. But i managed to get his name, find a friend of his on fb and told her to let his wife know he didnt die alone..hope it brought some comfort.

Severe sleep deprivation can make you completely delirious, pair that with high stress and anxiety and it may turn into a full on Psychosis, i hope Devin's family is ok, rest in peace Devin.

He talks to his boss, tells him, "I can't sleep...I'll just keep going...", and then proceeds to drive around crazy, acts agitated, moves his jaw all over the place, and takes off his shoes and wanders off into the woods...all of it just screams meth. Sure, maybe he wasn't known to be a druggy guy. But all he needed was to pick up some uppers from another trucker ("I'll just pop these to get me through the route"), take too many pills, drive, get sleep deprived and next thing you know, he's in drug-induced psychosis. I mean, meth is a seriously evil drug and a scenario like this one seems like the most likely explanation for this crazy Ballen story.

I even thought they had me on closed circuit tv. And the whole time I was weirdly aware of how crazy I was and sounded, but couldn’t stop it. My friends watched over me for the night, and took me to hospital for a check but it had passed.

This is truly a heartbreaking story. It sounds like this man was exhausted, missing his family, and probably stressing a lot about something (maybe the reason he coudn't sleep), and just snapped. And he went through this all alone. My heart breaks for him and his family...

I remember this on Unsolved Mysteries. Its a crazy story for sure. Sleep deprivation can truly mess us up. It seems like he just had a mental break. It is sad that his family has no closure.

I have mad love for truckers. When i was on tour with my music and the bus shower or something would mess up. We would stop at truck stops since theyre more low key. Truckers always look out for you. Whether the showers on them or whatever. Mad appreciation for everyone doing it

Road hypnosis, happened to me after I worked a late shift, a 16 hour at a call center. Drove home when we closed at 2, and I lost a good bit of time. My brain shut down, like I fell asleep, and I woke up just after the route 70 bridge across the Monongahela River, which is right near my house. I called my wife and talked to her the rest of the way home. Scared the hell out of me, and to this day, I have no idea how I got home intact and still on the same route home, or how I woke up just before I got home, other than somebody was looking out for me that night. My only question is, cell phones were around, not everyone had them, but most truckers had the computers for load data and dispatch, they could page the truckers, and track them. My dad and wife's dad were truckers around this time, I'm surprised the guy in this story didn't have that. Maybe not all companies and trucks had them?

I remember when unsolved mysteries covered this back in the 90s. I always wondered if he took some sort of stimulant to stay awake that caused psychosis. It’s very sad for Devon and his family, and I’m glad at least he didn’t hurt anyone.

This is a great story about truck driving and it can be used to warn drivers to be careful about driving in certain areas ❤

My dad is still a interstate truck driver, he started driving when he was 23 years old and he is now 70. Back in the late eighties and early to mid nineties the company he worked for did Adelaide to Perth which is : 1,677 miles or 2,699 km, so 5,400 km round trip. During the school holidays I would go with him and he would only take one sleep break for literally one or two hours on the way there and the same on the way back. I remember hearing All the drivers saying the phrase “I’m going to have an hour up the road” meaning have a sleep. The whole time there and back took three and a half days, he would be home for no more than 24 hours and do it all again. I soon realised most of them if not all of the drivers were on speed. I remember the stories about some of them through lack of sleep and the drugs becoming mentally unstable dew too paranoia and hallucinating so they either took time off or quit. I remember four of them drove off the road and died in accidents over the 12 years he did this run. I have nothing but the utmost respect for all long haul / interstate drivers, if it wasn’t for them our countries would come to a standstill🙏🏼🙏🏼 solute to you all🙏🏼

My dad is also an interstate truck driver he did Adelaide to Melbourne or Adelaide to Sydney. He was always away working and tired all the time he does local work now but your right mate without them our countrys would stop. Huge respect for truck drivers.

As a long haul driver that stays on the road for 3 to 6 months at a time this story was way too relatable to me. Alot of us get seduced by the amount of money we can make if we run hard and non stop without considering what we're truly risking. You're risking your sanity.

You have a great point, I’ve come to realize that most times in life we could be our own worst enemy. Thats why it’s so important to really think through any important decisions, and sleep deprivation is likely just as strong as alcohol when it comes to being able to think straight and make smart decisions that you won’t kick yourself in the rear over later. I know that I’ve made all too many of those and at 44, I wish that I could share said knowledge with my 20 year old self. It would have saved me A LOT of headache. It sounds like you’re reasonable though and have your head together, plus as long as you don’t burn yourself out it’s a pretty solid job. The only other job that takes you on the road that pays crazy good, but is incredibly backbreaking labor, are the UPS “brown shirts.” I read recently that they average north of $90K with O/T and full benefits! 😮 Anywho, be well, and don’t burn yourself out in the meantime. One thing I would have told myself 20 years ago is to invest - wisely - as it accumulates fast once it’s a habit and you won’t need the O/T, and the best investment today that’s literally guaranteed NOT to lose value are High Yield Savings Accounts (HYSAs). I’m doing about 5% APY on one, which is pretty good when considering that I lost my ass on stocks post-COVID (and bonds too!) Be well!

I do Security for a warehouse and I check-in trucks at the gate. Far too many stories of getting to know the truck drivers and so forth. I really grew fond of them and I appreciate you guys. May the roads be clear and May you arrive safe to every destination!

My dad was a trucker and man is it hard, 🥺he did it for us, well about 3-4 years ago he snapped and said I’m done that’s it. The traffic, the stopping and going it’s just too much. Much much much respect to all of our truckers!

It can be a very stressful job no doubt. Which is exactly why some of them turn to amphetamines (usually meth) to make it easier. Not only does it keep them alert and awake but I mean it's meth it's highly addictive for a reason. That's almost certainly what happened to Devin. The whole "opening and swinging his lower jaw" thing is the most amphetamine sounding thing ever. Your father is a smart man just choosing to walk away rather than resorting to drugs to keep it bearable, otherwise he might've ended up like this.

​@@bestieswithtestiesI absolutely agree. But, remember that back then you could buy ephedra, and many other stimulants, including amphetamines and analogs over the counter. Many of those trucker pills didn't even list their actual ingredients. Basically I'm saying that he may not have even known that he was taking dangerous drugs, and therefore the stimulant induced psychosis would have been much more profound. I obviously have no idea if it was intentional ingestion or not. But yeah....poor fella was tweaking out. He probably wondered around until he was injured or exhausted.

​@@bestieswithtestiesNot all truckers have to do drugs to stay awake. I've been driving for 27 years and the majority of us do not do drugs. Back in the 90s you could buy junk at truckstops that had junk in it that would keep you awake. There are ones that take drugs but they are few and far between. God Bless

I remember seeing this on Unsolved Mysteries a few years ago, I'm glad you covered it bc I had forgotten about it till this am.

Stories like this always creep me out. It's the odd unsettling behavior the trucker displayed from a man that was not known to have any current or prior health issues that gives me goosebumps.

Human unpredictability will always be one of the scariest things because we feel we should understand our own kind. When people break for seemingly no reason it raises questions such as "what about the people around me I think I know", or even "could I be susceptible to such a breakdown".

I'm in this group, & yesterday a lady shared a story of their relative, a truck driver, who's been disturbed by sth lately. Apparently, the guy saw a coyote crossing the road, & by the end of the road it turns into a creepy old woman staring at him, multiple times

I got to thinking maybe someone spiked his coffee with LSD. That's the only explanation to his behaviour. He was hallucinating like mad. Cause I remember around 1994/95 had some rank stuff floating around . I bought some "acid" off a well known dealer. I had done acid in the 80s, but this "acid" made me hallucinate for the first time in my life. And we just happen to be camping when we took it. I'm telling you, I seen things. Like the leaves on the trees were changing colors of yellow green red. I seen little pitchfork holding flame devils in the fire we had going. Oh man when I walked the rocks rolled along side me. I had to go lay down cause I was tripping bad. I looked up at the walls of the cabin we rented and I saw cracks mend themselves. Thank god I was still self aware of the fact I took a drug and this was the side effects. But imagine if you were not aware of that fact. Seriously a person could go mad on LSD if they're not aware of the fact someone spiked their coffee. So yeah, years later I now realize I was given LSD.

I'm so sad for Devon's family. Not only did they lose their much loved husband and father but they are left with this mystery and they'll likely never have answers. Wondering, imagining and not knowing what happened in a situation like this becomes a lifelong wound. Prayers for all of them. I know it's been many years but that kind of wound never completely goes away 😥🙏🏼💔

There is a group of people who attended to the homeless people. They get them treatment and hygiene. One day they had a doctor treat a man. Turns out he had sepsis and was delusional. Within 30 minutes of antibiotics they were able to establish is identity and reunite him with his family. He was missing for several months. No links this was from the people who treated him.

as a ex truck driver, i can assure you there is no 'park' on semis especially in those days ... automatics in semis wasn't really a thing until 2005 ... most all were manual transmissions ... you have/had to put it in neutral and set the parking brake on your cab and trailer ... I'm sure you meant it as a general statement for just parking for the night , but the way you said it was completely wrong

Sadly Trucking is in absolute shambles and companies are closing down left and right. I say this as somebody in Trucking. It's not a good situation right now.

My dad was a trucker, died in his truck, was a good man, I know alot of truckers now and generally they are good men and I wish them well, it's a tough job and they don't get the love I feel they deserve

I constantly battle with if the job is worth it. It helps financially but damages your health physically and mentally. Sorry for your loss, God bless you.

My uncle always told me that if you start seeing boogey men beside the road, it's time to pull over and take a nap. Turns out he was right.

I was a semi truck driver for 24 years. I had a dedicated run out to Sullivan and Washington Missouri. Hauling Tittanium. Unfortunately my carreir came to a end one day, I had a heartache, and they had to do a single bypass and while I was on the table for that, I had a stroke. I am now have left side perilisis and in a electric wheelchair. I understand how the hallucinations and the sleep deprivation very well, unfortunately. Yes I do miss driving semi, but it was hard to make money back then, and I have a few friends that are still driving and they are telling me that it is harder now and the DOT is always changing the rules and regulations. So, GOD Bless all the drivers out there and please be safe . May GOD Bless All of you. And have a Wonderful and Merry Christmas.

I can listen to a story in just words and sort of feel the vibe and grasp the content. But when Mr. Ballen tells the story and uses his body and hand gestures? I can picture it and feel the story 😊

I ended up changing the like buttons brake fluid from maple syrup, he took it to the mechanic stating that his brakes were a bit sticky 😂

I remember seeing this story on the original Unsolved Mysteries (RIP Robert Stack). It's so heartbreaking to know those kids will never see or know what happened to their dad. I hope the family has been doing ok despite everything. RIP Devin.💔😔

When I worked at Taco Bell I had a trucker customer who would come in once a month. He was awesome told great stories about where he’d been and even tipped the staff. We used to give him extra bags for garbage in his truck, free food and drinks. Guy was scary looking but had the softest voice and was super nice to us all.

After this story made me realize my product from Walmart is delayed again for 8 days. I take in consideration that these truckers have a very hard life. They have to deal with so much and the public people has no idea, so while I wait for this order to arrive at my home, I just go on waiting and praying everything is okay, with the drivers who are long hauling products across the USA. This guy sounds like he snapped from lack of sleep and wanting to get home. Prayers to all truck drivers regardless, what their hauling of product. Prayers to this guy's family for Devon is now at peace. Stay safe, cool/warm. and blessings.

Reality is your Walmart delay most likely has little to do with the truck driver, especially after 8 days. Barring an accident that caused the shipment to need to be reshipped from the original shipper, your delay is most likely caused by the shipper not shipping because it was forgotten, mishipped, or not in stock. Or was lost at the store level or transfer point when received. We truck drivers go from point A to point B. The rest is none of our business so far as everything's labeled correctly. So just know outside of "the truck is a couple hours late", if they tell you the driver "blah blah blah", they're just covering their own asses.

We are older now in 2005 me and another lady drove from mo. To idaho we just traveled the day and slept in the car at night. Every car problem we had we were helped by truckers. They were life savers. Thanks guys.!!!❤

I have so much respect for truck drivers. You guys looked out for me and my newborn from Gboro to Charlotte the first time I had to go to the VA, and drive the 90 miles by myself. They saw the antennae, spotted me out and rolled with me the whole way. That was 32 years ago and it still makes me smile. I've been known to defensive drive to let a trucker in when a car driver was being an asshat. You truckers keep the world turning!

The 20 something year olds in here have no idea what you're talking about with the antenna. We had a antenna too. Used to be a thing to sit in the driveway and talk to the local ppl on the CB.. lol I actually met the boy I lost my virginity to on the CB. Anyway... you are 100% right. If you have a antenna they will try to call you.. Hey pretty lady in the red car you copy? Lol and they do look out for each other and anyone they are talking to. My husband has his CDLs but he doesn't really drive a lot. He works on service rigs so sometimes he drives the rig to locations.. but I wouldn't call him a truck driver.

My grandfather was a trucker for 60 years. 60 years! Some of the stories he had were absolutely mind blowing. He was also one of those guys that you did not want to mess with. Wouldn't walk away from a fight from anybody. The guy was hardcore, rip Gramps.

My first husband was a longhaul trucker. He worked for a broker that would push his drivers to the extreme bcs he'd overcommit to various customers. Hubs had just got home, showered, ate and laid down for some sleep when the broker forced him out on another load just 5 hours after. I had to go with him on this run just to keep him awake. On our way back home he snapped during rush hour traffic on the G. W. Bridge leaving New York. Started screaming at other drivers that he was gonna kill them, would crush them inside their cars, etc. It was horrific watching this big-hearted guy I loved devolve into a madman. I was saying anything I could think of to bring him back and it wasn't until I started crying and crawled into his lap that he finally came back to himself. We were in a traffic jam at the time. As soon as we got far enough out of town and found a safe truck stop, he first called in to let them know the stop had been made on time, we crawled into the sleeper and crashed for 12 hours straight. So yeah, sleep deprivation plus being constantly threatened to lose your job will do a real number on your mental health! Oh, and to Steve the broker, if you ever read this, I hope your floozy wife took you for everything you had and you get cancer of the anus!!

When the black dog nearly caused me to take the life of my friend and collegue. The other guy is right. Read with understanding. That poor woman and her husband were in danger. The black dog could have cost them everything or tainted their hands with blood.
