That's because of X-men films being part of FOX (not Marvel-division of Disney). So they ditched X-men because of it, because they didn't want to give FOX spotlight. Thus they went for Avengers aspect. It's an insult for fans, but they had... reasons to remove it. Not necessarily good ones, but reasons.

The first misstep MvC:I took imo was kicking off Ryota Niitsuma from the producer chair. A guy who was pivotal in the development of games like Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Street Fighter IV, and Marvel vs Capcom 3. He's responsible for the genius marketing cinematic trailers for MvC 3, the cel-shaded comic book artstyle for TvC and UMvC 3, and the fresh unique character roster in MvC 3. By replacing him they removed one of their strongest asset from the Marvel vs Capcom franchise.

Hopefully Capcom will learn from the failures of their recent games, and improve. This whole “game as a platform” business hasn’t been kind to them. They should stop focusing on this story mode stuff, and just make their games look and run well online with substantial amounts of content at release. Their gameplay is still top notch, but their presentation has to step it up.

They need to take a cue from SNK and do "dream match" style games with no plot and focus on the gameplay and characters. SNK's games tend to be well-balanced and have few issues. The sales' numbers back it up.

Mexican Uppercuts I still believe in the idea of "game as a platform" and always will, it's just that no one seems to understand how it works. Good graphics that rival MvC3's, nice stages, fun gameplay, and a nice diverse roster of let's say 20 and then expand. Of course make it cheap, make a season pass and I believe people would've accepted it.

I was so excited to get into this game and when it came out it was like a bundle of gross meat just fell outta the sky into my hands. I dropped it in the hopes it'd stand back up as a better game.

Wolverine would be awesome if he was in the game. I could be wrong but I think the reason xmen isn't in the game cause the develepors were focusing on the MCU characters. there might be one or two non mcu characters on the marvel side I could be forgetting something. its been a while since I played MVC: Infinite. Overall it is a fun game apart from the certain parts of the story. the plot was kinda cool just poor dialogue.

What they did right: +gameplay What they did wrong: -Advertising/Promotion -Music -Roster/DLC roster picks -Graphics -UI design -Easter Eggs

Dominick Majors Didn’t help Peter “Combofiend” Rosas was in a pickle so he chose a crappy approach instead of something like “We’ll see what happens as we go forward.”, which wouldn’t have caused a shit show. While some characters can be seen for what they can do, crossover games are about fan service especially.

The presentation killed it for me. MVC, and Capcom fighters overall are renowned for their amazing sprite and/or handrawn stuff. Heck, SF4 and 5 even managed to nail a semi-comicy style that would have massively improved MVCI's presentation. Mk and Tekken can pull off the realistic stuff, partially because they are working with material that has always been semi-realistic. Yanking comic characters and characters from notable spritebased franchises and slapping a coat of realism did not work out at all. The gameplay however is great. Under rated in my opinion. Oh and the lack of xmen was a big mistake by Disney. That's like pulling Mario from Smash.

We just need a real Marvel vs capcom 4

I really love retrospectives/postmortems like this. They're important for understanding the industry and looks at specific niches from experts within those niches is fascinating. MvC is a really important franchise in the history of fighting games. Thank you for bringing up the issues Capcom had as a company leading up to the release of MvCI. As a group, people generally have a short memory. Personally, I considered the release of SFV one of the most insulting things a company could do to their audience and had no intention of giving them money for MvCI. That said, I was still very interested to see what the game was like outside of the easily observable nonsense (graphics, story, writing, etc.). Hearing about how your feelings for the game put you between a rock and a hard place was really interesting. Yours were my favorite gameplay videos for MvCI, because it was easy to see how much you enjoyed the actual mechanics. For all their faults, at the end of the day Capcom makes fighting games. It must have been truly demoralizing coming to the realization that MvCI content would just not be worth it. Your willingness to put out as much as you did and not just pander to their mob mentality -- on either side -- is commendable and I hope you ultimately are happy with what you did release. I hope you have plans to do more videos like this one. Getting to see your opinions about games and companies in the context of where they fit into the history of the industry is fascinating.

Whoever gave max death threats should seriously get a life, max is honestly an awesome human being and the fact that people are actually giving death threats because of a video game is honeslty just sad

Greg V. Marvel Entertainment's CEO Ike Perlmutter has had a childish feud with Fox for years, which is why the X-Men kept getting sidelined for the Inhumans in the comics and the Fantastic Four was written out until recently (after Disney bought Fox). Claremont even said that, for a time, there was a rule at Marvel against introducing new mutant characters, because they didn't want to give Fox any new material. If MvC ever comes back, hopefully things will be good again.

MvCI just doesn’t bring the same level of hype it’s processors did. Rooms of people exploding in cheers after seeing someone rally a comeback just doesn’t happen with MvCI. I wanted to be excited for this, I really did. Bought UMvC3 for the vita just to scratch the itch. But it’s just not exciting to watch and ultimately not the game we all wanted.

Thing is people love choosing sides. It's either all good or all bad to some people. So when something has glaring problems, but there are also very good elements in it. Haters will bash everything, fanboys will love everything. I wonder why people love creating sides where it doesn't belong. MVCI had very good game play, but mediocre story, visuals and incomplete roster. You can't just bash the gameplay because you don't like the story mode(which is only important in a fighting game, if that fighting game is either BlazBlue or Guilty Gear) or the visuals. The story can't be fixed but the Visuals and Roster could be improved given time. WHen you hate on everything you don't alow for that to happen. Same as when you midlessly defend everything.

@Tomek FM, I'm sorry but it's you here who have been blinded by negativity. Max clearly pointed out all the problems in the game that needed to be fixed. But you can't simply discredit the gameplay when it was the one thing that was well done. Simply giving up and bashing the game will not fix anything. Pointing out the problems while highlighting the merits can make you heard. But companies work with numbers, they will never listen to the voice of only one player. When everyone is pretty much like you and simply give up, your voices will drown out Max sole voice, and the company will just follow suit and give up on the game just like you guys did. It would be different if he was one of the blind fanboys who just praise the company for whatever they make, but he is not. People need to fix this Bad Habit of not giving anything a second chance.

Every country in the world and their dog, the gods and their loyal servants, devil and his demons, and all the aliens in the universe, pretty much everyone. You may think it's a smart choice that you're telling the company how they need to change their games. But what you and everyone who bashes those who actually show the good side of the game are doing... You're pretty much saying this, "I don't like this crap game, and you should stop doing this crap". What you don't say is that the gameplay is good and that the series could be better, because you're being so obnoxious in wanting to tell Capcom off on their mistakes that you forget to tell them you like the series and that it still has a chance. THAT is the reason why people keep saying that the gameplay is good. It doesn't matter if it's the one good thing, it doesn't matter if it isn't enough, If all you do is only bash the game while glossing over the good aspcts just because they are not enough, all you'll ever get is to kill the franchise. That's it. If the game has merits you have to point them out, don't think is okay to only tell people off and wash your hands of the results.

I am sad that MvCI is dead but in reality, both Capcom and Marvel are to blame. Marvel especially since they want to make it an advertisement for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and not adding characters that people really want. And Capcom for not putting any effort in the presentation. The gameplay is good but just everything else isn't. Oh and to anyone who's sending death threats to Max, you really need to wake up and rethink your life choices.

Well Disney did try to destroy all mutants and fantastic four in everything. Since they wanted to own them. Hence why not one of them allowed in this game. I put more blame on capcom. - Lack of content - Smaller roster than the previous game - Embarrassing, cringe inducing story mode - Ugly as shit - Questionable character choices - Banking on DLC to provide the game the roster it needs - Shafting major fan favorite characters over petty corporate decisions - Making characters they know everyone wants as DLC immediately - Lack of excitement or support from the developers making the game Yeah it's no wonder this game flopped. No game could have survived this.

What upsets me the most is that they got rid of the cool comic book aesthetic and how lively the character select screen was and how they all had quotes for each other at the end of their fights.

Problem is UE4 dont come with good cell shading code, yes you got Arc System Works but they actully needed to extend the engine to achive what they got and Capcom didnt want to sped time on it. 2nd potential factor is Marvel picked this perticilar style as they wanted to promoted movies, i would not be suppriced that they stright up said to Capcom, make us Injustice for Marvel.

Getting rid of the X-Men didn't help at all. Lots of fans get pretty bothered when their series staples aren't there and ditching the property that got this series of games made at all was pretty shitty in my eyes. I still haven't picked it up even though I usually support things with Darkstalkers in them cus I want to see a revival of that but I just couldn't. Especially, saying that people only care about functions was insanely stupid and didn't help an already rocky situation. Capcom has just lost too much of my goodwill. I rotate a bunch of fighting games whenever I get in the mood to play one and there isn't a single Capcom one in there. That's sad to me...

Very heartfelt and even though I'm not as close to fighting games as I once was, hearing passion about something someone loves is always amazing to hear. Art truly does die when the creator stops caring who it reaches in favor of reaching more.

No fan service, that's what happened. Everyone was so hyped for this game. Everyone was excited to see returning characters like Doom and Wolverine, and the hopeful new ones like Leon Kennedy, Asura, Nero, Punisher, Daredevil, Carnage, etc. We didn't get what we wanted man. The game died upon arrival. I think what we need is a proper Marvel vs Capcom entry. A game being complete with a roster beyond Marvel v Capcom 2. No DLC bullshit. If Capcom can release a game like Monster Hunter World that has amazing graphics, smooth gameplay, and complete, then they can easily deliver an amazing fighting game. They need to get better people in the fighting game department, Marvel included too. On both ends. Unfortunately Marvel also had a huge hand in fucking this game up big time. Taking out the Mutants was probably the biggest mistake. I completely agree with your opinion Max. The game had some good properties, but man, there were a lot of negatives. If they continue to do the franchise, they need to step it up and need to start caring about the fans. When they do that, they'd be surprised on how much money they'd actually make. They'd make a lot more if they put more effort into it if that's what they're worried about.

And a lot of the PR and such didn't help since Capcom knew they couldn't throw Marvel under the bus with some decisions like the lack of several characters such as the X-Men and Fantastic Four rosters due to Disney's pissing contest with Fox and Sony at the time as well as the push of the MCU elements just because of how Disney and Marvel couldn't stop just sucking their own dicks about the MCU's success. And while MVCI plays well, it just falls apart in a lot of areas like you said with fan service as well as art direction, some of the music tracks, etc.

"I lost a lot of faith in the fighting division of Capcom..." Wow, that must've been hard to swallow for Max. He was a huge fan of Capcom fighting games for years and now, his hopes for Capcom to make great fighting games again have became skeptical. This video made my heart sank; it's been really depressing for him... :(

The thing that pissed me off the most about this whole thing was how so many of the people who call themselves "fans" of Max were flat-out attacking him for DARING to enjoy the game. Apparently he's not allowed to like what they don't like; they just want him to be a "hype agent" for their preferred franchises to make them more popular, and wanted Max to rag on this game as hard as they did, to "bury" it faster- and when he didn't, they turned on him. Well, you lot, here you see what you did to him. You're not his fans- in fact, he'd very likely be better off without you.

In fairness, there's a difference between Max liking the game and Max flooding his channel with videos showcasing the game. People never attacked him for liking the game, they attacked him for giving positive exposure to such a divisive game. I never personally attacked him, but I did unsubscribe because I was tired of seeing Marvel videos.

This is why presentation in a game is important. Certain characters and the artwork for those characters was just really bad. Reused character frames from MVC3. There wasn't a lot of ingenuity put into this. Seemed more like a quick cashgrab game to me.

I first played this game a few weeks ago casually with my brother-in-law who’s a lot younger than me and just fell in love with the characters and the story (especially with the infinity stones and their relevance) and I wanted to learn more about the meta and competitive scene. That’s how I found your channel. It’s a bummer to hear how it has a lot of disappointing aspects, but I’ll definitely enjoy any MvCI content you put out. Also, I couldn’t seem to find an MvCI playlist to binge lol, it would be great to see one of those on your channel.

I hate that MVCI had to fail, it sucks to see a great series hit a block in the road when it could have been phenomenal

There is an article that Disney didn't like that the IPs that they could offer couldn't stand up to.. Well be on equal ground eh fighting wise to capcom IPS all I took from it was waaaaa😭😭 we cannot complete so we have to rig the game. Well so they raged quit.

Sad indeed. Dragon Ball is an excellent Marvel replacement. They probably think that Max's opinions carry enough weight to be another nail in MVCI's coffin, so theyre looking for a singular person to pass blame on since they have to leave their Capcom comfort zone. They should blame themselves for having that fixation on MvC and just move on to other better made FGs.

Tbh years ago I thought Max was just some capcom shill mainstream dude who didn’t take other less popular fighting games seriously, but eventually realized this was just a guy who was very passionate about many fighting games and was doing a lot for the fgc. Man to see you talk about how your favorite franchise has now kinda died and was disappointing is really painful. Your thing about how criticizing it made marvel fans hate you and how loving the gameplay made other people think you were bought out, that must have been a hard place to be man but I totally get where you’re coming from. Good news tho is that some other fighting games are still thriving now so the FGC is still very much alive and capcom still has a chance to break back in stronger than ever. This was a heartbreaking video, I’ve just been with the mvci hate bandwagon before this I’ve gotta admit, but to see it from the perspective of a dedicated fan such as you was really heartbreaking. But if I see you streaming mvci or whatever, I personally will definitely watch idc that it’s mvci

InVader crops up super dash being one and the horrible assist system and much more. MvCI is a better fighting game mechanically but, it’s horrible presentation and even more boring roster killed it

Hot take: Capcom should take the MvC formula and cut Marvel out of the equation in favor of a traditional fighter's equivalent of Super Smash Bros, but with capcom characters

I’d would like for Capcom to make a sequel to Marvel Super Heroes and a sequel to All Stars but that’s probably a pipe dream at this point.

Marvel vs Capcom was my childhood, and the concept is just so raw and insane. The idea of mixing different universes of characters just sounds amazing to me, and it's really sad to see Infinite sink like this. The timelessness of UMvC3 is just so powerful.

If you send death threats to someone for liking or saying nice things about a video game that you hate, you need to rethink everything that you're doing. In fact, you probably need to stay away from video games period, at least for a while, because there's a such thing as getting way too zealous over something. Seriously, we're supposed to be better than this. Yes, video games are a wonderful art form that is and should be greatly appreciated, but that's no excuse for threatening someone's life. There are reasons why a few too many people see this community as toxic and unwelcoming, and this is one of them. Grow up and have some respect. It's a video game, for crying out loud.

Some people shouldn’t have to state what they think on the internet when all they have to say is death threats to Max or the devs over at Capcom or both! Everyone deserves the right to speak freely about someone or have an opinion but there’s a fine difference between expressing your distaste for a person/company/product/anything and acting so mentally ill and completely delerious that you would kill someone because they liked a game you didn’t. If Max’s appreciation for Capcom games did make Capcom continue to churn out their games even worse than they do now, it’d be Capcom to blame for finding it reasonable to push the goalpost further in annoying their consumers over hearing the criticisms and responding to those accordingly

Liam Cronin They need to do a few updates like balance changes, maybe upgrade graphics, put on that sick motion blur, give a Japanese voice option and MvC3 music option, etc. People will stop saying it's dead if they start doing announcements on it again.

Things are so bad that people stopped making mods for it. I want to hope for the best, but I can't with this game. It's really sad tbh.

The Injustice 2 story played a huge factor, and Injustice 2 in general. That game had so much content, and the story was amazing. It created a ceiling that MvC:I was never going to be able to beat even if the gameplay for MvC:i was superior.

I'm crying this hurts me that everyone has their favorite game with a bright future and I'm stuck with a masterpiece in game play and then nothing it hurts me so much seeing my favorite franchises in my favorite game not get the love and respect it deserves ignoring the fan favorite characters not putting weird and wild crazy new characters I feel personally betrayed

I think the state of Marvel itself was somewhat to blame. Putting in characters which were appearing in movies at the time instead of sticking to staple characters was a bad move. The lack of any X-Men characters was also not good.

The roster can be blamed on Disney somewhat, but the graphics and gameplay is all Capcom. I think another reason why people were turned off from MvCi was after the disaster of Street Fighter V, and the previous crossover Street Fighter x Tekken

WHAAAAAAA HAPPUN?! I think the biggest problem with MVCI is that it never felt like its own entity but rather as a promotional tool for more "important" projects like the MCU films and Monster Hunter...

Michael Scally And still, they failed miserably at creating hype for both Monster Hunter and Black Panther. Making them DLC was a stupid move, they should have been free, or released after the success of both MHW and the Black Panther movie.

flammableghost there we have it, the crux of the issue. Imagine if Smash 5 finally hit that sweet spot of gameplay, something like a refined and more accessible Melee. Sounds good, right? (Even if you don't like Melee, just bear with me.) Well, how about if Nintendo decided to remove all the Pokemon characters and stages due to TPC's history of dicking around Nintendo, remove any character whose franchise hasn't had a new game in 8 years (this would mean goodbye to many of the more "out there" picks), remove Bayonetta despite being Nintendo funded due to her raciness in her games, and the third parties demanded that their characters couldn't be shown to be hurt by Nintendo fighters in promo material? Suddenly that sounds like a soulless, boring piece of shit despite great gameplay, right?

Removing 3 on 3, cel shading and the X-Men was the biggest mistake Capcom did which caused MvC infinite to flop. And boy did it flop hard.

Basically, corporate greed and pettiness took away amazing potential

Sadly mvci's fate was sealed with the awful roster.

Dick Chocolate I think it's a decent roster. That whole "they re-used MvC3 characters" argument is complete BS. That's like talking about MK11 when it comes out and you say, "Why did they 're-use' Takeda, Erron Black, Kotal Khan, and Cassie?!" Because that's what you're supposed to do!!!

Daniel Goforth Except with MK11 its likely going to be as fresh and interesting as possible while continuing what came prior. MVCI on the other was a straight up lazy copy and paste job, no imagination or freshness at all.
