What George Lucas REALLY thinks about Rogue One

Rogue One is a movie that is virtually loved by all Star Wars fans… but what about George Lucas? Does he feel the same way about Rogue One, or does he think it is a mess like much of the other Disney Star Wars movies. Tony Gilroy shares about a private conversation he had with Peter Hammond.

The "crawl" at the beginning of the 1977 film, tells us that "It is a period of civil war." It describes the stolen Death Star Plans and how the princess is racing home with them. Rogue One is that story. The "crawl" (above) is the summary of Rogue One. They got incredible and seamless continuity with that strategy. And yes, Rogue One is what filled the Rebellion with the "hope" they needed for SW: A New Hope.

Vader's hallway scene is cinematic gold, but how everyone has a big job to do, they all do it and everything works out perfectly for the rebellion at large, but every single one of our beloved heroes perish. If I had to guess those other comments would be about using Tarkin. Disney was probably really pushing for using that technology and getting people more comfortable with seeing it on screen for the Mando show season 2 Luke stuff. If you think about it, having Tarkin just be a presence off screen kinda like a boss everybody is worried about disappointing wouldn't have drastically changed the film. Since George was on set with the actor back in 1977 he might not have felt great about seeing him used in a Star Wars film posthumously. Just my 2 cents

I was fortunate enough to watch the original Star Wars as a kid on its opening day back in 1977. Besides ESB, Rogue One is the only movie that has really captured the feelings of awe and excitement I had when I was young. ROTJ the was fine, but the Ewoks and puppeteering in Jabba's den were kind of silly at that point and a pretty obvious marketing ploy for merchandise. ANH, ESB, and Rogue One simply told a story with a great mixture of tension, drama, challenges, and sprinkles of humor. Visually, Rogue One also captured the aesthetics of the original films and improved them with gorgeous CGI during the space battles; unlike the prequels, which were just an orgy of CGI effects. The only complaint I can imagine Lucas had about Rogue One was them killing off the entire cast, considering how much the final trilogy liked throwing in easter eggs ad nauseum.

I really appreciate Rogue One and the atmosphere surrounding it. The only problem I have with the story, as a Star Wars fan from early 1978 when I was about 7 years old, is that over the decades I never really imagined how the first Death Star plans were acquired. In my opinion Rogue One and Andor succeed because they are original stories, told without politics and personal agendas at the forefront. The Empire is clearly portrayed as being the military machine that it is and not being prepared for a small yet capable Rebellion. I wonder if George might of had some issues with the portrayal of Darth Vader in the corridor. He also might not have agreed with showing Jyn and Cassian on the shore as the blast grows in size. I think that the portrayal of Darth Vader in his castle makes Darth Vader look like he's just doing a lot of standing around (And I understand the scene, but I'm not going to get into that here), that Darth Vader scene in the castle really kind of seems thrown in more for effect than it is part of the story.

You should do these videos too: 1. What if George Lucas never sold Star Wars? 2. What if the so called 'fans' never told Lucas that he did a terrible job on the Prequels? 3. What if Lucas believed that it was the story, not just the special effects, that sold Star Wars? 4. What if Lucas had decided to film the Prequels around 1987 to 1993? 5. What if Lucas hadn't changed his story for the Prequels to include Qui-Gon Jin, Jar Jar Binks and mediclorians? 6. What if Darth Vader wasn't Anakin Skywalker? 7. What if Luke and Leia weren't brother and sister? 8. By doing the Prequels earlier, what if Lucas had decided to film Episodes 7-9 between 1997 to 2003? 9. And by doing /\ that /\, what if Lucas had decided to use 'Heir To The Empire' as the storyline for Episodes 7-9? Imagine having Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher reprise their roles in 1997? 10. What if everyone stops blaming Disney for doing what 'any' production/film company would have done had 'they' bought the rights to Star Wars? The bottom line is simple: if you can raise the money, then do a 'reboot' of the entire Star Wars universe story (and therefore eliminate ALL of the plot holes), then may I suggest that you move on and just don't watch the films produced through Disney.

I will die on this hill - The original 6 movies are better than any other show or movie released afterwards. Episode III is my second favorite Star Wars movie. Anyone who thinks the prequels were bad is overshadowing the entire sequel trilogy with the tiny clips of JarJar that exist. He did not have much screen time across all 3 movies and he was basically non existant in the third. Also Boga was pretty cool.

Loved Rogue One...as for Andor, that show is TOP TIER television in ANY genre. When you can deliver action through dialogue alone, then you know you are wztching rarified air of television. Let's not forget the casting...this first year of Andor was precision crafted and it fired on all cylinders. When a show engrosses you to rewatch it and you are still finding gems on every rewatch, then you know its beyond special. When a show makes you watch hours and hours of KZread content just to see the reaction of others, you darned well know this is top tier. I haven't spent this much time on the internet gobbling up stuff on a film or series since The Matrix.

R1 was the first movie since Empire that made me “feel” like I was watching a Star Wars movie. I saw SW in ‘77 as a 9 year old. Saw Empire 3 years later. Something, the force maybe, kept me away from theatrical showings of any SW movies until R1. For myself, these 3 are the only movies that are actually good. There are elements of the prequels to like, more to not and nothing at all to appreciate regarding the sequels. I stopped episode 8 at the midway point and quit on episode 9 after seeing the trailer.

The 'Many Bothans died...' quote was from "Return of the Jedi" - it relates to the plans for the second Death Star and it's location above Endor. I'd suggest that Disney needs to make a "Rogue Two" (for lack of a better working title) to settle the question. We might even learn what the Bothans are, since they haven't appeared in the current canon.

Star Wars should have concluded with George Lucas' Revenge of the Sith. It was fun-- in the moment--to see if Disney could sucessfully add to Lucas' story; but what we got is just...weird? I loved Rogue One. It is the only film so far that does not openly violate the events of the original trilogy or makes the original characters look bad. My own gripes with it are the following: 1. It contradicts the Radio Drama - considered one of the tiers of canon up until Disney came along - with regards to how Princess Leia got access to the Death Star plans. 2. The scene at the end with Leia was too flat. Too sterile. Instead of answering the question "What does all this mean?" with just "hope", she should have said "A New Hope". or 'A New Hope for us". It would have cemented the connection with Episode 4 perfectly. 3. Leia should have been walking and running with the crew as she did in Empire Strikes Back, being active and issuing orders. More energy to highlight the moment!. "Captain Antilles! get us out of here! Set course for Tattooine, maximum speed, Hurry!". And that's it

Even with my fellow SAG Mexican comrade leading the casting, Andor, Season 1 felt like a British melodrama. Virtually everyone was sporting English, Scottish and Irish accents, no matter what the status, plus all the highlands imagery. A tell-tale sign of where this show was shot. In classic SW, the Empire or Coruscant hierarchy sported the English accent and this made the class distinction clearer to us. Listen to Luke, Leia, Han, and Lando to get my meaning.

The only sense I can make of why Rogue One is so well liked is because kinda sorta feels like ANH / the OT, being set in that period, but where our heroes come from darker or murkier backgrounds and who all die in the end. So I guess that's also where comparisons to Empire come from. But like with Andor I'm skeptical of the success. Like with Solo, that move mostly got reshot after Gareth Edwards was fired. We know Solo was also reshot & consequently lost money, but apparently Rogue One at least broke even, if not made a decent profit. Basically I think Rogue One is fine, but I wouldn't put it up to OT or PT level, let alone the best next to Empire or surpassing it. It's not a film i enjoy rewatching much or at all.

Unless there is video recorded evidence of George Lucas saying he liked or what he liked about it and what he hated about it I am calling BS and won’t believe a word coming out of Tony Kilroy. I hated rogue one. I hate that it violates continuity with A New Hope because Darth Vader describes a totally different event on how Leia got the plans. And I hate that all of the characters died in the end because that gives me less insensitive to ever want to watch it ever again. There was no reason to have them ALL die it just comes off as convoluted. As you said Darth Vader’s scene was the only thing worth watching (however it does break continuity on how he acts in A New Hope, as good as the scene is it still violates continuity), without the Vader scene the movie would’ve surely bombed because the characters were not interesting enough to even carry the film. It was a mistake on Disney’s part to allow them to kill off the characters because now they can never profit off of these characters in toy sales. Nor can disney profit off of these characters with any sequels. Mismanagement. I found the movie terrible and an unworthy addition to Star Wars canon, and since it is a Disney Star Wars movie automatically makes it Not Canon to George Lucas’s Star Wars. We already know what George Lucas thinks of the Disney Star Wars and that includes rogue one: “Disney Star Wars is not my Star Wars.” - George Lucas.

  • @Rimasta1

I just realized. If Vader was holding the door with force, if he’d have closed it all the way the rebels would’ve never retrieved the plans for the Death Star and Yavin 4 would’ve been blown away along with Leia and the rebel base. Empire wins the war with the closing of a single door.

rogue one was cool bcos they added a lot of easter eggs in it and it did stay pretty true to the extended universe and concept art, but because they added so much stuff never seen or mentioned in rogue one it felt a bit inorganic, ik that theres always the argument that every single thing unique to rogue one blew up but thats just not super plausible. i think rogue one was a rlly good movie and very entertaining aside from some small nuances and nitpicks but most of those things go away if you were to remove star wars from the title of the movie and everything associated with star wars. yes a lot of the context would be lost and there would be no extrinsic reason to care abt the story other than its the grunt misfit underdogs taking on a very big enemy. i had the same problem with halo reach, similar story and everybody dies in the end. trying to stop some huge force from their goal. but all in all because of how much stuff had to be retconned out of the story for rogue one to have PLAUSIBLY taken place literally moments before the mainline story kicked off i think of it as a good movie and poor star wars installment. good fanservice, much pandering, overall very cool to see, just felt like a lot of the old stuff thrown in was fanservice and a lot of the more ig logical things were thrown aside for merchandising and whatnot

I enjoyed rogue one. The Vader scene just made the whole movie for me though. Rest of it was pretty good too. The Vader scene could've almost been out of a horror film. I think that should be the way the sith are portrayed. Evil to the core as evil can get. To the point of being almost disturbing. They are after the most powerful force wielders in the galaxy. They are evil to the core. They are powerful enough to command and control legions, being they have no restraints, which means their evils truly have no bounds. They should make one with a sith lord whose lair is like a house of horrors. Like something out of Silent Hill. The stuff that nightmares are made of. It would be awesome.

The first time I watched the movie I really liked the story, but I ended up quite dizzy and with a huge headache because of the visuals and I haven't been able to re-watch it which is a shame.
