A story that's out there about this song is that Dave Grohl still didn't know how he felt about himself as a songwriter, and about playing music in general, post Nirvana until Bob Dylan approached him one time and said, "What's that song you have?....'The only thing I ever ask of you'?....I should really learn that song sometime." And having a legend say that about one of his songs gave him the validation and confidence he felt he lacked with Foo Fighters.

Dave Grohl is one of those musical geniuses that when they're asked how did you come up with that idea, they're like... "well, I didn't know you weren't allowed to do that." Srsly, when he was asked about how he came up with the guitar part for this, he said that, being a drummer, he just played it like the drums. (according to Rick Beato)

This is one of the best videos ever made. It’s genius. It’s silly, but very artistic. They’re both dreaming. He needs to save her in his dream. The bad guys, after he kills them, go to her dreams. So… he made his dreams better, but that made her dreams worse. So, now he needs to help her. If he would’ve just had a bad dream hers would’ve been nice. The brick wall signifying no way out, the big phone that can’t be answered, how she called him in his dreams (also in real life) from her dream. Then he had to dream himself into her dream. The only other video that was as accurate about dreams was Kid Cudi - The Pursuit of Happiness (Megaforce version). It’s artistically amazing. The lyrics are okay. The song is great.

Love this song. Definitely the song that put them on the map. Yes, this is what you would consider alternative rock. I think they are just more rock now, but this song was definitely in the alternative category when it was released. Other really good bands in this genre to check out : Three Days Grace Songs : I Hate Everything About You, Break, Chalk Outline, Never Too Late, The Good Life. Seether: Songs: Broken, Fine Again, Fake It, Breakdown

Not sure if it's been said already, but the Foos also close out almost every show with a version of this song. They do it up big at the end and the energy with the crowd is so so incredible!

An 11 year old girl subbed in for their drummer at a concert for this song this year. She played it perfect. Before that she had been doing a drum battle challenge back and forth over youtube with the Dave Grohl who plays drums as well. Good videos of all of it. The girl was Nandi Bushell.

Dave Grohl wrote 'Everlong' about his then-gf Louise Post of the band Veruca Salt... Grohl just got divorced, so it was a heartfelt song in 1997. They did break up... but Grohl did marry again after 2000 and has kids now...

Louise did the backing vocals (the dududududu). She sang them over a telephoneline for at that time she was in England with Veruca Salt. Also Louise wrote some great songs about their break-up.

Great song, and great reaction, as usual. I've commented on other reviewers' who have said the same thing you did about the video, itself: Best to listen to this for the first time without the video playing, because the visuals are so distracting. :) Take care, be safe, best of luck!

Foo Fighters are great musicians that have a great sense of humor. They take their music seriously, but they don't seem to take themselves seriously, and I really love that about this band.

I love the leather jacket with the big “M” on it. I believe it’s a tribute to a venue in Chicago called Cabaret Metro, which is up the street from where Dave saw his first punk show (The Cubby Bear across the street from Wrigley Field in Chicago)

Fun fact: the first FF album was all Dave Grohl on all instruments. The second album from which this song came, had Will Goldsmith of legendary Seattle indie band Sunny Day Real Estate on drums until Dave decided the style wasn't what he wanted and rerecorded all but two songs with himself on drums. The drummer in the video is Taylor Hawkins who is the drummer for the band after Goldsmith left. Also, the bassist is Nate Mendel also of Sunny Day Real Estate, and the other guitarist in this video is Pat Smear who was in an OG punk band called Germs. Their singer killed himself to enshrine the band and there are unsubstantiated rumors that if it wasn't Courtney that killed Kurt Cobain, it may have been for band immortality or something. Nowadays the band also has a third guitarist, now their lead guitar, Chris Shiflett, who used to play in a punk rock band called No Use For A Name. And Taylor got his big break playing drums for Alanis Morissette. So Foo Fighters are technically a supergroup as well.

You guys are right about videos; they're hit or miss and can add, but most often detract from the song. I love these guys, but their videos are often pretty goofy and intentionally cheesy. I would go with lyric videos in general for them. Great band and SUPERB live. David Grohl has warrior energy onstage. I saw him perform once with a broken leg sitting on a FF throne and he absolutely killed it ✌

The video is directed by Michel Gondry, who is one of the most talented directors of his generation alongside Spike Jonze. Try Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and you will understand the spirit of this video, nominated for the Best Rock Video at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. As usual, brad´s logical thinking feels alienated for the surreal and oneiric stuff.
