What exactly is an algorithm? Algorithms explained | BBC Ideas
Ғылым және технология
What is an algorithm? You may be familiar with the idea in the context of Instagram, KZread or Facebook, but it can feel like a big, abstract concept. Here’s presenter Jon Stroud with a step-by-step guide to what algorithms actually are, what algorithms do, and how algorithms work.

I'm a welder.... I got very tired of welding 'daylight' when it came to the welding of nodes or intersections of pipes of different sizes and at different angles. No matter how carefully each piece was cut by the fabricator, there would always be gaps and sometimes big gaps..... I started writing algorithms which produced the template patterns needed and these templates were accurate to less than .040". I spent years writing algorithms which gave answers to every conceivable piping intersection or connection or transition or offset or whatever was humanly possible in this area. All on a pocket computer which proved its magic on any worksite anywhere. And never again did I ever have to weld 'daylight'.

Sorry bro, you wrote a chain of instructions for your machine. Its a basic computer program. Make your templates in autocad, that program is full of mathematical and geometrical algorithms.

What an insightful video! Thank you so much for your sharing. You have done a lot of research and interviews with algorithm experts. What I learn from your video is that algorithms are a set of instructions. They help us to find related information in the search engines quickly and effectively. People should not be frightened of algorithms because they are beneficial to us. More importantly, we should learn how to utilize them in the proper manner.
Jon, YOU are the FIRST human(almost) that truly speaks my language! I am a Myers Briggs INFJ and that may be the reason. May you be blessed in all of your endeavors. Sincere thanks, John, Dallas, Tx 74 y/o

Word Algorithm is driven from its creator's name "Al-Khwarzmi" a Persian Muslim scientist who invented it.

Algorithms can also be mathematical with total absence of computers. The term "KZread algorithm" or "TikTok algorithm" or "whatever algorithm" for that matter is inaccurate but has been accepted to explain "operationalized AI models" mostly in the form of "recommendation systems" aka "recommender systems". Algorithms simply are the building blocks of those "models" or "AI models". For the lay, the term "algorithm" has been deemed to be perhaps the most understandable. Algorithms can also refer to completed programming codes or scripts which may or may not use "historical data".
Great video!
in ancient math books, problems do not state like in today's book. they usually came in form of general solutions for certain types of problems. I.e. Do these n steps and you get this result. it is named after Muhammad al-Khwarizmi a Persian polymath
Professor at Oxford reminds me of Chris Parnell from SNL

This is an impressive write-up. A book with a kindred spirit is suggested if you're engrossed in this topic. "Game Theory and the Pursuit of Algorithmic Fairness" by Jack Frostwell
It´s hard to understand what is an algorithm if you don´t show graphicaly how they work or are used to compose an instruction, for example. The video lacks that.

Faxs and there never going to fully explain it to us Bc we would take advantage of It
I don't know whether this is the right place to ask this upcoming question or not. In 2min 32 seconds of the video, the host says " try and get a better understanding of how all of this works?". would you explain to me why he used works instead of work?
This is significant. If this speaks to you, a corresponding book is worth your consideration. "Game Theory and the Pursuit of Algorithmic Fairness" by Jack Frostwell
Good to know that the algorithm that takes my job will do it much better than I.
I just want to say 1 thing u did not cover difference between code n algorithm part nicely.

would be nice if they were transparent about what frameworks and variables they use in the algorithm. The internet was more free before they started making the decisions for 'us'...
Wow SUPER 😍😍😍
A sweet film, but algorithms are actually a mathematical receipe rather than a set of flying rules. For the drone example, the rules needed to make the drone fly and flip would use various algorithms.
Great
Searches on KZread: what is an algorithm? KZread: Guy searches on google what is an algorithm?
Fun Fact: Algorithms were actually invented by a Muslim scholar from Persia. The word Algorithm is a latinised version of his actual name: Al Khawarizmi
Am i the only one who dont understand "how do algorithms work: difference between code anc algorithms" this part🙂. Can you explain? Or anyone?
He says that the thing we all should be concerned about is what happen when you are in the black box? He means he's pretty much accepting that algorithms and how they work still out of his reach
all algorithm is the source of human brain...same way as the computing box seen in the vid...matter is how...a single human brain do it with itself whereas a computerised one do it organised way...human action is ptecedent of it...it can be flawless but no alternative of...about proper use i can say all behind human being...watch big think vid..
Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi Persian mathematician,Changed Humanity Once and For All, He Deserves Our Respect,
we love you !
The first time I had some sense of it.
WAIT A MINUTE: did they just gloss over that??: “algorithms can make their own instructions now.” - HELLO?!?! What exactly does that mean?
If its "thinking" it is learning to me he was hildimg back from really saying AI
The algorithm means steps to solve a mathematical problem. Those who do not understand any mathematics can make a hue and cry about algorithm without saying what mathematical problem he is going to solve.
So algorithm is kind of a written machine unseen in a computer
