What does Wakanda Forever do well? - Black Panther 2 Review

Ойын-сауық

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has a monumental task of being a beloved sequel to a billion dollar that lost its star in Chadwick Boseman. With T'Challa gone the movie deals with grief, loss, anger and a big fish man with wings on his feet called Namor. And in addition to that we have the new Black Panther in Shuri, Riri Williams as Iron Heart just in time for her Disney Plus show and a bunch of blue underwater people running amok. Anyways this spoiler review is taken from our podcast The Weekly Planet that comes out every Monday if you're interested. Thanks for listening!

It was definitely necessary to have Namor give that tour of Talokan. That was the setting up point of hospitality for Shuri to empathize in the end with Namor. It drew all those parallels together and thus formed their ability to eventually make a truce. Namor even explains why he decided to not continue the fight in the end.

It's always a shame when someone gives an amazing performance existing on a plane well above the project's paygrade. Among other things, the performance itself often gets lost in the shuffle and no one recognizes it (or, if it's a genre film, is proactively ignored - AKA Hereditary's Toni Collette).

That was essentially the point that Mbaku brings up, but that silly flashback sequence Shuri has makes it seem more like her decision was made because she emphathized/sympathized with Namor. Wakanda Forever resonated me on such an emotional level. I lost my brother around Easter time this year due to medical issues, so I strongly related to Shuri’s character. That opening felt like a visceral punch to my gut. I loved Riri but I think her addition hurt the movie. It made the front end of the movie just drag a bit too much, and it took up time that should have gone to fleshing out Namor and his world better. Also, the final battle was a little too contrived, and felt disconnected a bit. I think there could have been a smoother transition from Namor’s attack that kills the queen to Shuri’s retaliation, and she needed to see that her people were about to die, to really have the realization she did. Otherwise, I loved it! Still in my top Teri of the MCU for sure, but I am a sucker for sentimentality and stories about grief!

The performances were great, the character design was really cool, it was a good exploration of grief and loss, it was a bit too long and overstuffed, they could have cut all of the Everett Ross storyline. I enjoyed it but I also am not in a hurry to see it again because it is a bit of a downer. I think the best part was the resolution of Shuri's storyline and her grief and anger. The beauty of Talocan is that it's almost an alternative history, where the Aztec/Mayan cultures and way of life continues underwater as if the Spanish didn't arrive. They went the other way from Wakanda and maintained a simple way of life wherever possible. The fact that the suit Shuri wears has a light but that everyone in the city seems to see fine without lights, suggests we don't see the city like they do, and only get glimpses of it. Until Namor shows us the palace and the artificial sun he created. So yes to humans who live on the surface watching youtube videos it probably does look like somewhere we wouldn't want to live, but that's kind of the point. It's their home, they're way of life and they are different. They're a primitive people, with a lot of valuable resources who a lot of countries would want to take, like the Spanish did to their ancestors.

The first 3 quarters of the film were like a play I thought. I really enjoyed Shuri and Namor's conversation in the underwater cave. Namor, in general, I thought was great. The whole situation could have been resolved if Shuri had used her earings to call home or send some sort of signal to say she was safe. The finale just made me think of power rangers, it was on that level of getting a bit silly. Some of the blue screen was really bad, they definitely would have benefited from using the volume. I do think most of the emotion for the film comes from Chadwick having passed in real life. I was very emotional at several points. It's an exploration of grief and I don't think that's necessarily what people expect from the mcu. Overall, I think they did the best they could have given the circumstances.

After all, he is a god to them, and it seems he thinks of himself that way, too. Can’t afford to let his image falter, ya know? I strongly disagree with you on Talokan. During Shuri's tour she keeps stressing how beautiful it is, and Namor keeps saying stuff like 'Now you see what I have built you understand' etc. All that dialogue implies that what we're witnessing should be beautiful, but it just isn't. Or maybe it is, but it's so poorly lit that I couldn't tell. His motivation is only defending his home, but I'm just thinking 'your home looks shit'. Also, there's no benefit to contrasting Talokan with Wakanda. The whole point that Namor is trying to make (and Shuri agrees with) is that Talokan and Wakanda are the same - beautiful ancient civilisations built on vibranium that the outside world wants to tear down.

My wife and I Iost our son in September to a rare and incurable Leukodystrophy, so the opening scene hooked me and nearly made me cry right away, especially the moment of silence for Chadwick through the Marvel logo with the images of him. From there, I was all the way invested. Yeah, there were plenty of slow parts throughout, and the middle did drag just a bit, but between Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Tenoch Huerta, and so many others, the movie was carried by the tremendous cast and their performances. The only element that didn't surpass the original, for me, couldn't be recreated sadly. Chadwick's presence was so missed in this movie, man. Other than that, we had a great time.

LOVED the Throne Room scene with Ramonda & Okoye, gave me chills! Give me the Dora Milaje D+ Show with Ayo, Aneka & Okoye getting more screen time! There was some wider MCU world-building that felt like studio notes to Coogler that would've made the movie tighter if it was left out! Given that they were up against Namor/Talokans, would've loved to have seen more of The River Tribe's involvement in the fight! The Midnight Angels armour stuff was primarily there for the Easter Egg hunters/New Rockstars crowd - a case of not every comic book idea translates well to screen! Bridge fight was excellent, just like the grounded visceral waterfall fight between Killmonger & T'Challa in the first movie, but both movies have to do the big traditional MCU 3rd act instead of finding a way to subvert it or do more of the grounded visceral fights from earlier in each movie! First BP movie would still have made $1.2bn without China & Russia, and BPWF could make $340m less than the first movie and still clear a billion like Jurassic World Dominion narrowly did! Its '95%' RT Audience Score (3rd highest in the MCU), 'A' CinemaScore & '93%' PostTrak Score suggests ppl are loving it and will have longer legs than both MoM and L&T! Phase 4 was simply about dealing with the ramifications of Endgame & introducing new characters that will come together in Kang Dynasty & Secret Wars! Ppl who went into Phase 4 expecting big team-ups at the end of it should've had tempered expectations! RIP Chadwick Boseman & Kevin Conroy - THE BATMAN to an entire generation!

It was so well done. It's this Golden Age character who we want to walk this impossible tightrope inside the MCU and also it's coming after Aquaman. For all that Namor was first in audiences minds Aquaman had the first movie and was far more famous over the years, they can't just say he's a fish person and move on. And it's so good. We get he's this centuries old ruler who loves his people and has this beautiful city to protect and we know from Wakanda the parallels that would be facing them. It's all right there and instead of holding back both civilizations are turned into monarchies willing to do horrible? terrible? decisive? things to protect their people at all costs. And he's just all Namor forced to deal with the surface world for the first time and willing to burn it all because he's Namor. I found that deeply enjoyable since we are missing him interacting with humans during WWII in this universe. In another movie this would be so much less epic. The urge to just have them escaping evil mercenaries and have them get rescued by Wakandan so Namor can just be a clear cut villain would have been so easy. Or like 90s superhero movies turn him into a vague like businessman who's aims are evil because he's evil. Instead he's got some points and he's not entirely wrong. He just doesn't care about anyone outside his own people because Namor. Also I want him so badly to be on an Avengers team now or X-Men movie. Also someone needs to get that man a pizza.

@@christianphrenger7902 it's so interesting this weird massive double standard every single female superpowered hero gets in the MCU. Jen's too good at being a Hulk, unlike Bruce who used his background in science to instantly win every single fight he was ever in and escape and evade the military which he can do because reasons? Steve goes from but being able to throw a punch to leading a his own squad in WWII after one time knocking over a flag pole because that's the exact same thing as being flawlessly good the first time you see combat. Tony Stark doesn't just invent a whole new game changing weapon in a cave he also physically builds it, programs it and then uses it to escape something no one else on the planet except one person can come close to even with all the resources they need at their disposal. Also he's a better pilot than highly trained military pilots and a race car driver because those are easy skills to master. Just on and on, not even a montage, they're just perfect at every new skill they attempt and that's utterly fine. Or we just assume a character like Clint was trained so it's fine no need to go into details, or despite the character we see from Thor in the first movie he was super focused on training trust us. Then we get a character like Kate or Riri and nope. Despite an actual explanation for how they've developed their skills and then getting help in improving on screen it's unbelievable to think that women can get good at things even if they work at it. Unless there was some concerted pushback during phase 1 I just can't remember about the superpowered characters being too unbelievable because of how ridiculously OP they all are there's no conceivable reason why people are honestly annoyed out of nowhere coincidentally just when the characters are women. Frankly the only contemporary pushback I remember was how dare they cast Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury.

@cupguin it’s all in the writing of the characters for me. Shuri works because she clearly has gone through the ringer. She lost everything. Jen/she hulk wasn’t compelling because what hardships did she face besides just being a woman? Bruce lost 5 years of his life to the hulk and has a canonical attempted suicide. Steve lost everyone he knew when he went into the ice. Tony’s whole journey is about learning to be the one to lay down on the wire, and did a full 180 from the first time we saw him. I don’t see a problem with riri because, like when Hawkeye was first introduced, she wasn’t really developed much as a character. My main problem with marvel is how unreliable the writing has been. You have movies like Wakanda forever, with exceptional writing, then have things like she hulk or Thor 4, which granted were different tones, but still had writing that felt like a first draft.

I really enjoyed the movie and had about the same complaints as you guys. Probably something like an 8 out of 10, good but could have been better. It felt long, longer than it was, and the first half especially felt pretty poorly paced. Most of the beginning felt like it was going scene to scene rather than a naturally flowing story. I really enjoyed Namor, felt like he made more sense than most villains. A lot of folks have complained about him but to me he seemed like exactly like an isolationist nations leader who knows other nations are encroaching and is running out of options to prevent it. Think of like Japan in 1853 when it was forced to stop its isolationist ways. There was an interesting story going on where Wakanda is in the same boat, the only difference is they haven't seen what Namor has, they did not experience what he did in his childhood. He knows the result of expansion, and of encroachment from other nations, he knows it results in death and he wan't to protect his people. It would be very interesting if they expand upon this in future movies but I doubt that will be the case. Either way, I enjoyed the movie, I could see it again, just wish they had some voiceover from Chadwick Boseman, glad they didn't include his force ghost or something like that though.

I think they were going to replace Chadwick Boseman Black Panther with Shuri inevitably, it would have been another two or three movies down the line though.

It's not implied that M'Baku will be the Black Panther. It's made pretty clear that Shuri will continue in that role. The Monarchy and the Panther are separate institutions.

Oh sorry I completely misread what you first said. Yeah he might not be BP, though the ruler usually is (with some exception like early T’Challa). Cheers mate!

Regarding Talokan: The same set designer worked on Talokan as worked on Wakanda, and they had actual Mesoamerican experts as consultants to teach them what is correct. Considering it's not Atlantis but Talokan now, I'm not what you would have expected, but if you were looking for something more like Aquaman, that wouldn't have fit. No shade to Aquaman, but that'd have been cartoonish by comparison, as BP: WF is a more serious, more grounded (such as it is) film. It looked like it should have looked, considering the background. Remember, Namor said that they weren't going to move Talokan AGAIN, so take that into consideration as well. Regarding the warning about emotions: People who watched the trailers knew/know what they were/are getting into. I must have watched 30 or so different trailer reactions, and most people were tapped in to the emotions they were going to be experiencing in the film and accepted them off top. The film's tone not depressing or mean-spirited, it's easy to process those emotions, and for people dealing with loss, it can maybe encourage some to still love and remember but accept what their new reality is. You can take what you need from it. Personally, it's been very therapeutic.

Quick explanation for the water ppl being hard to kill, the reason they can survive down there is cuz of that plant. so effectively its an entire nation of "black panthers". Only one person in wakanda takes their plant. So i believe thats why during the bridge fight those ppl didn't die. 🤷🏾‍♂️

i have no idea how but i would love to see michael b jordan back as a hero in the black panther suit. i would also settle for Winston Duke as black panther. no offense to Letitia Wright but i dont see her as a lead role in this series.
