I'm quite new to Star trek. It seems like a briliant idea to create a starmap that covers everything known cosmology wise in Star trek.
I did think it would look different in a 3-D format Thanks for your insightful look.

I love your videos. Although technically you are correct the Milky Way is 3d and 2d maps gloss over this, that is for good reason. The thickness of the galaxy only ever gets to about 1000 LY whereas the diameter of the galaxy is 100,000 LY. Thus, you have a 100:1 ratio for length/width dimension vs. height. The variation in height of star systems will thus tend to be not overly "off" relative to the galactic average. It's probably fair to say that some boundaries will have variation due to this, it is unlikely entire political entities exist "above" or "below" the federation unless they are very small.
Something else that made-up star charts don't account for is the large swaths of interstellar space between the Federation and other empires and alliances. I think some people have the impression that the edge of Federation space bumps right up to the edge of the Klingon Empire's, but there's actually hundreds of lightyears of unclaimed regions of space in-between them. We sometimes forget how F'ing big outer space really is.

Axctually, the territories do "touch" each other - that's why there was a DMZ (neutral zone) enforced at the edges between Fed/Klingon/Romulan space (shaped almost like a peace symbol - and yes, in TNG era, the part that separates the Klingons and Federation was basically removed due to the peace treaty and mutual defense pact).
A 3 d map of the st universe would be cool! With animations which illustrate the different bigger factiins and to reconstruct the different series traveling routes..

I agree! I made an attempt at a 3D interactive local space map with trade routes and such, showcased in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aYB-r5RwkabVZKQ.html Unfortunately I have no idea how to share something like that online for other people to download, although I may try and get a project like that up and running again in the near future.

FINALLY someone actually paid attention to the dialogue, and knew that Cardassia is next door to the Romulians. There's far too many posers who post endless trek videos...who never actually bothered to watch the show and get properly informed.

@@xkm-thebasetecchannel3823 I'll take what I can get, rather than putting the entire Cardassian union on the other side of the Federation like all the other maps do.
Looking fwd to the next video. Thanks again. ;-)
We do actually know of many specific stars and nebulae on the other side of the galaxy to us. Stephenson 2-18 is located in the Delta Quadrant, in what’s probably borg space, for instance.
So here is my personal read about map. Basing mostly on Enterprise information (because we actually explore regions in relatively close proximity to Earth). I stress I do not fallow any official map, outside generally known info: 1) Earth is located on Alpha-Beta quadrant border. As Federation HQ serve as Prime Meridian. What is interesting Vulcan most likely on the same line. As it was concept originally developed by Vulcans, but probably not codified. Earth was most likely originally in the Vulcan controlled domain. 2) Earth Border with Delphic Expanse, what in my opinion should be on "north". Area serve as kind of barrier, as it is hard to explore, due to large quantities of anomalies. Kirk didn't reach center of galaxy until late 23'th century. Region is most likely inhabited by Xindi, First Federation and several isolationist fallen empires. It could also be where T'Kon (Icon) empire was originally located. 3) Romulan Space is most likely Bordering Vulcan Space (both races are related), Delphic Expanse (Iconia is in Neutral Zone and Romulans could possibly use it to sneak near Earth), same way Archer bump on minefield and Klingon Empire (both Vulcans and Romulans have known relations, so area probably create tingle). Romulan Empire also at least partially may encroach on Delta Quadrant, as Romulans fight the Borh, what seams to not be the case with Klingon. Both Areas seams to be "South-East" from Vulcan-Earth space, "East" from Vulcan. 4) I believe that "West" was literal Wild West. After Nuclear War on Earth area was colonized by semi-independent Earth colonies like Eugenic colony. This make area technically belong to Earth, but it was largely a barrier, because many of those colonies didn't like trespassers. This forced early-Starfleet to careful diplomatic approach to integrate those, sometimes fierce anarchistic communities. What still exist during TNG. North Start colony in Delphic Expanse also indicate my previous assessments regard Delphic Expanse. 5) For that reason Ferengi and Cardassia, what are actually rather close to Earth, were not discovered until TNG. Federation hold rather symbolic hold in the area, with Earth doing most of the exploration on they own. This also could explain Cardassian-Romulkan border as they territory could loop somewhere around Delphic Expanse. Isolationist Tholians are also believed to be there, cutting additionally Federation from access. Most likely "South-West" from Earth-Vulcan area. 6) It would be safe to assume that most of Federation was actually located on South from Earth. With Vulcans bordering Denobulans and Andoria. Earth didn't reach them before Warp 5. I believe Telarites, possibly could not border with Vulcans, but other two, as they contacts with Earth was limited. Verious other civilizations were plug in between. Reputation of Vulcans, most likely shield Federation from Klingon's, until expansion "South-East", didn't open new tension zones. I stress that it is interpretation based purely on Knowledge from Enterprise. It probably would not align with official map.
Great video I have been trying to understand about star trek and where it is set
Do you have a link to your proposed 3d map? Star Trek Star Charts appears to be the closest we have to a canon published map from the franchise.

I'm working on one. It's going to take a while due to the uncertainty of a lot of information but I'm trying to use Astrosynthesis to make some test maps.
startrekmap should be used carefully as a reliable source.

Will there be a Beta quadrant video as well please?

I actually intended for this video to cover information about both the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, at least the portion around local space (within a few hundred light years of Earth). I _will_ have a follow-up video expanding on the 3D structure of the Federation & neighboring powers, though.

I wonder if that energy barrier the ENTERPRISE tried to break through in WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE surrounds the whole Galaxy and why.Is it some kind of natural energy formation or artificially formed, and if so by whom and why ? Surely that would make a good video and Tyler is the man to figure out this mystery !!!

It's not cannon but there is a novel that says the barrier was created by the Q to protect the Galaxy from another being with similar powers to theirs.

So Warp work through interaction with semi-paranormal Subspace (all weird anomalies are that). We do know that there are no-warp zones. It is why Omega Particle was banned. So it is quite possible that Inter-Galactic area was basically no-warp zone. With only Tikonians (and those aliens from Disco) being capable to create subspace tunnels between galaxies (Omega Particle Manipulation). Though physical wall from the episode was most likely Q's trolling.

They galaxy is NOT in 2d. What many fans see as the standard Star Trek map is like the mercator map of earth. The typical one that's not the globe that we see all the time? It's mentioned in a couple of episodes that The Romulan empire and the Cardassian union share a boarder somehow. The 3d version real version of this map is probably somewhat spherical or globular.
Aren't the Klingons and Romulans in the Beta Quadrant?
@TheRezro

Yes, they are. It is why Alpha Quadrant seams almost neglected, despite hosting Federation core worlds.
Yes, for the longest time I couldn't correctly explain this. Peace and long life. Edit: just a little bit of context. I DO NOT have good speaking skills and have aspburger sundering. So even though I can understand completely concepts, I can't always explain them effectively. Thanks for sorting through this. Live long and prosper. Keela Sel'iah. And peace out
Cool
this old stuff is so funny the origin of the neck beard
The Federation places the divide between the Alpha and Beta quadrants directly on the Terran sector, but is this preference acknowledged by other galactic powers?

Quadrant System was purely Vulcan invention, what strongly imply that both capitals may be located in same line.
Any new star trek needs to go into the third dimension.
Hmmmmmm
Never agreed with the Earth centric map of Star Trek. No one else in the galaxy would be using that format.
