Mason Mount has been a mainstay ever since he broke into the Chelsea team, through three different managers, and three different styles. Plus he’s Gareth Southgate’s first-choice attacking midfielder for England.
But why? He’s always there, but what does he do? Jon Mackenzie explains, Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

He really is able to do pretty much anything you ask of him at a good level too, truly jack of all trades, but a master of none. The only thing lacking from Mount right now is better individuality, the problem with being the perfect cog is that you become very textbook and thus the opposition can stop you if they are well structured. You can't break a well crafted structure with safe generic plays, chaos or "magic" is what breaks opposition defenses and this is what I think he's missing to truly become a superstar.

The Mount Vs Foden debate has raged on for far too long. In the England side, Foden is more naturally gifted but in the system England want to flourish in, both players fit into different roles. Mount in the 8 and Foden out on the left provides both the creative flair and concise technical ability to succeed. At Chelsea we don't see Mount in the 8 enough and I think a midfield refresh is coming to enable mount to return to the 8 rather than lost out wide like he sometimes does.

foden is just a far better player mount can't play 8 as he's too slow, weak, and has no one v one ability. his goalscoring is better used up the field anyway, he's a 10 but just a pretty mundane 10 at that. a far worse version of rooney

  • @oimhaz

@@glidinggolovin I don't disagree that Foden is better but in my opinion they're not fighting for the same position. Mount is much better as an 8 and is excellent at taking the ball on the turn and driving with the ball. He is quick and where you've got this idea that he's too slow is ridiculous. His engine is excellent and enables him to maintain his pressing so you've clearly not watched him enough. As said in the video his off ball and positional awareness is very good which better suits an 8 than a compressed 10 position. There are better players for the 10 position but for England the 4-3-3 is the better option for now.

Sounds crazy but all of them are capable of pulling something off, whether it's a long pass to break a defence, a run in behind, clinical finish, screamer from outside of the box or a mazy dribble through a defence. They can do it but in a poor system that doesn't get the best out of them then it's going to be hard to get the confidence and trust to do those magic things they're capable of. It's funny how 2 years ago everyone in the universe wanted a Mason Mount. Put him as your CAM and he performs. Stick him on the wing and he performs. Put him in the center of the pitch and he performs. There were other better players at those positions but whatever you ask from Mount he just went out and did it. You need him to pass, he passes. You need him to shoot more he did that. You need him to lock down a winger he went all in. Because of this he hit the rarified air of being one of the top 3 British players under 21 and the sky was the limit. Of course this is probably his curse. He never got a chance to stick in one place to become one of the best at a single position. Chelsea kept changing coaches, tactics and identities. Then the team just began bringing in more and more players who only played in a single position on the pitch and they were just better than Mount. I can truly see him picking up the pieces and coming back in a big way. I dont know where or when but Mason Mount can ball.

I believe the reason for this issue is that Mount plays the position of the main chance creator, but doesn't have the skillsets yet for a top 4 chance creator. However, as pointed out in this video, Mount is too good to drop as well. Because of this, I think Mount catches a lot of flack from Chelsea fans as our performances are suffering due to this, but it's not his fault. The off ball stuff is what made him so vital, and he hasn't done that with any real effort for 1.5 seasons and that's the issue you're seeing for chelsea and england. What's frustrating is that he can easily do it, but he'd rather pad his stats. Tuchel called him out from the sideline for being "asleep" multiple times and Potter is seeing the same thing. It's a mentality issue, that being "the guy" is more important than the win for the team.

To me, he's long seemed like the real deal. And he's not the finished article yet, he's still learning. The man himself always says he's an 8 and I'd like to see him get a long run there. Further forward, he's very useful, but doesn't quite have the consistent deadliness those roles require. Yet. Skill-wise, he's wonderful. I think in other countries, he'd be a regular starting central midfielder for most clubs. For England, it's harder. You have club loyalties and more casual fans. With the former, there'll always be 'we want out man' (there's also regional bias). With the latter, it's more about optics, the obvious. And Mount isn't always about the obvious.

I have a grand theory (!) that positions on a football field in the modern game are more flexible. The nature of lots of pressing and creating short passing triangles means players more frequently exchange position. Like Total Football applied more consistently. Check out Harry Kane, England's best midfielder (and occasional defender) and number nine. So whether to play Mount or Foden in the first row of three or the next is not so important. Thoughts?

The huge problem with Mount is that he is often played with Havertz and their ideal positions somewhat overlap. It doesn't help that they are played as inside forwards too, as either of them is not great in 1 on 1 situations on the counter and is not really a creator that would give a KDB-like pass to break the opposition's defence. If they are rotated properly and used in the number 10 position in 4-2-3-1, the team's cohesion in attack would be much greater, as that would allow the manager to include either Hakim Ziyech or Christian Pulisic as a winger, and those are the two most dangerous players against packed defences as Pulisic is very explosive in tight spaces and can create space for others, while Ziyech has a rocket of a left foot and he also sees passes that other players don't. Also, Mount had a lot of subpar performances for Chelsea this season where he has no influence on the game whatsoever, but he keeps playing. What I really liked about the world cup so far has been the influence of Pulisic and Ziyech when they are given enough freedom and time on the ball by the manager and played in their proper positions as inverted wingers. It would be a lot more difficult for Potter to keep them on the bench coming so hot after the World Cup.

Being versatile doesn't always mean that your good. He's a good system player but personally doesn't think he offers much for a really top team. He's not good enough to dictate a game like a thiago or an explosive box to box like a Bellingham or creative like foden with great close control. He reminds me a little of what gini used to do for Liverpool.. But if you want to evolve and be a better team I don't see him a a regular starter. A good player to have in your squad and to be utalised for certain games. And as far as the goals are concerned he scores in patches... So he's not very consistent with that.

I think Mount's criticism has become a 'big issue' due to the other choices available that SG seems adamant not to use. And therefore when Mount fades into the background or doesn't seem impactful as a 10, the attack stumbles and forces Kane out of the box. IMO rotation/competition with Maddison would be a healthy contrast to use at given periods.

Its not so much the microplays(which is what every idiot sees) but the macroplays that puts him out, and therefore dulling the entire attack. He also isnt too physically imposing. He might have to play like Timo, tricking the opposition marks to make space for others. But its a thankless job and the criticism might be too much. Unlike Timo though, he rarely misses sitters.

I was asking the same question after two low key performances vs Iran and USA, and like tifo came to his flexibility and football IQ which offers every managers in game tactical fluidity without the need for substitutions which is a massive advantage. However there comes a time in every players career where for the sake of the player and team the player needs to find a primary position, and having played so many positions in so many set ups hasn’t given Mount an opportunity to master a role. With such a talented England, Mount is probably the second best player in every midfield and attacking position, so when Mount under performs its easy to point him out and call for the player who’s been left out for Mount we there it be Foden, Rashford, Grealish, Maddison, Henderson or Phillips all of which offer something massively different.

Mount losing possession was a consistent trigger for USA’s big chances. In terms of tactical fluidity you have James Maddison on the bench, who can play in and has played in every midfield position and style at some point over the last three years, Maddison is also a set-piece specialist giving him an extra dimension that amount lacks. I’m not going to call Mount a bad player, I’m just saying there are clear examples of like-for-like replacements, who at the very least deserve some minutes to prove their worth.

He's absolutely not worthy of the praise this video lavishes on him. He is one footed, can't receive the ball in tight spaces, can't run past players and he is physically small, weak and slow. He does have qualities, he has a lot of stamina and tries hard, he has good tactical understanding, he has an eye for a pass when in space and makes good runs but on the ball, he's extremely average and struggles to impose himself on games.

Makes sense for Chelsea but with the huge choice England have in forward positions there are always better options than Mount in any particular game in my opinion. He is the perfect backup from the bench but as a starter in big games makes no sense.

Would be twice the player with decent finishers around him. Needs to add more goals and consistency to his game, but there’s good reason why he plays every week. Tuchel rated him and got the best out of him so far, Lampard always did, he’s been ever present for England for three years and he battered the Dutch league after a shaky start and left with comparisons to Cruyff at 19. Has the work rate, desire and technical ability to go far in the game.. and albeit just a rumour, can see how he’d be so good for Liverpool!

Maybe, just maybe he'd have more assists if it wasn't Werner, Lakaka or Boomerang finishing his chances. Mount has been in the top 5 for chances created in the Premier League for each of the last two seasons. In the last 2 years only KDB is above him in that metric.

last season mount did not play LW, in a 3 at the back with only jorginho and kovacic or kante in a pivot, he played as the AM in a 352, which means he helped in various positions. it is embarrassing your braincells can't seem to grasp how impossible it is to play LW in a 352. the position doesn't even exist so provide me with the evidence that mount regularly played LW, when he in fact never, and just played AM, which means being in various flanks and attacking roles. it appears you again do not know what you're talking about at all mount also had poor performances in the wider areas that he played, when it was a 343 instead. spurs, arsenal, he never played vs liverpool + city. mount was getting dropped regularly by tuchel before he started him against bottom side norwich where he stat padded a hat-trick, where two of his goals came after norwich get a red card. these are why stats mean nothing in football because i study football, and you sit there consuming misleading data because you are cognitively dissonant. i get you're not anywhere near my knowledge of football, but mount played in a false position and performed very poorly. foden was the main reason city won the league as he offered the best legs, technical ball carrying and intelligence that mount cannot do. if you learn football, guys like hazard for previous seasons never got the highest goal output, but was still vastly above someone like salah who basically doubled his goals. i have so many forms of essentially refuting and debunking your arguments while you cannot offer any counters. even ross barkley started over mount against burnley and played the same position, which is an AM, and just shows tuchel dislikes him as he barely started him. mount subsequently played poorly as an RW vs leicester, completing no dribbles, being taking off in 60 minutes. against united he never started either, again eluding to his total lack of trust by tuchel, and his performance against relegation side watford is where he got a goal playing as striker with both havertz and pulisic interchanging, and a similar repeat of this can be found with ziyech instead vs west ham. against leeds, west ham and everton it seems to be some of his better performances in a row but this is all pretty ordinary in the context of describing whether he played well as a winger or not, when he didn't and played across the pitch as an overall runner in behind, linking, but again at a poor level. they finished 3rd for a reason the only time mount played remotely close to RW is against wolves and he didn't create a single chance and only completed one dribble. he spent his time being in a similar position to pulisic against villa and he didn't contribute anything. pretty sure cho had a far better season all round than mount, as he and reece james acted as the actual wingers while mount got to vacate into the box or just outside for second balls. a great example of another fact that you ignore is how tuchel utilizes his wingbacks to behave as the wingers, like with brighton. pulisic played rwb, cho lw and reece james lwb, meaning mount just played as a second striker to link with lukaku. tuchel made his system so that it had less predictable positioning at the cost of not having a core method to break down teams, and mount is responsible in many ways for why it failed mount also had another poor performance against liverpool so again, proving my theory that he only plays well against slow, lower blocks where less pressure exists. got dropped subsequently vs city again, so if you actually go through each game, you'll be able to see that mount had a poor season, compared to foden. foden dribbles at far higher rates and it goes back to my argument for hazard. there is no real argument you have other than cherry picking stats while i proved you're basically wrong about the system and its core functions. another poor performance vs brighton, playing AM centered left side. mount played decently as a RM vs spurs but was outshined by ziyech who is average at best, so that just about summarises his overall lack of ability. mount played again as an AM vs burnley and performed poorly in a 4-0 W without him. mount played very average against newcastle where they played a 442 of havertz, werner, ziyech and mount all esentially fulfilling similar roles. mount played as a second striker in a 4-1 loss vs brentford and played poorly. another way to completely crush your argument is the fact that when tuchel finally got the system correct, mount played as a strict AM behind havertz and werner in a 352 and they won 6-0. do your research before you ever step to me again. mount played against as a higher phase AM with werner and lukaku, he again played decently but lost. point is, he played AM, same followed with the next west ham game, in a 1-0 win. mount did play decently as a right attacking midfielder, where james acted as the sole winger in rwb to make up for his slower, unnatural pace. against everton mount played as an AM with havertz for link up play to feed werner. 2-2 draw with wolves he was benched, and mount only played well against leeds because they got a red card 20th minute, where he again scored mostly played as a right sided AM, not as a winger strictly mount played decently against relegation watford as an actual LW this time and that's every prem game i covered because you were too lazy and ignorant to unclog your biases so yeah, last season, mount mostly played as an AM, filling in across many positions, while performing only well in 3 big games out of 15 games. he played poorly vs liverpool, united, arsenal, spurs, city and plenty of good teams too. lastly, mount got most of his contributions against red carded sides or low level opposition where chelsea should have won tifo also doesn't grasp football, because i already proved how mount mostly played as an AM, and when he did play LW or RW, he played mostly poorly. leaen football near my level
