Mikel Arteta endured an uncomfortable time at the start of his Arsenal managerial career. But it was all part of a project, that eventually led them to the top of the Premier League.
Chelsea are embarking on a similar cultural shift. But how did Arsenal do it? And what can Chelsea learn from their London rivals?

the big problem is that arsenal appointed arteta when the club was already down pretty bad. thus arteta was able to more easily get away with 2 back to back 8th finishes. where as chelsea was just coming off the back of a recent champions league victory. Theres no way the fans are going to be okay with allowing the club to dip into mediocrity for two whole seasons. Potter simply doesnt have the luxury with the fans of this club. and with the money spent. potters time is really ticking low

Agreed. Another problem Chelsea have is that it doesn't appear as though Potter is in complete control/cohesion with regards to transfers. Just going off what he has said in the press, it seems as though a lot of decisions are being made above him, whereas at Arsenal it's clear Edu and Arteta work in harmony.

Chelsea just recently hired Gilbert Enoka to help with that last step. Now I doubt anyone will recognize this name, but he is a mental skills coach from New Zealand, who worked with the All Blacks (NZ Rugby union team) over a time in which they were absolutely dominating the sport, winning two World cups & having a perfect season. He has been brought in to help develop a winning culture and work on the mental side of this team being fit together

The process itself is completely different the only thing that is similar and comparable is the youth transfer policy. Arsenal completely got rid of most of the senior players inherited by Arteta, while in the process lowering the wage bill, they then build a new squad foundation based solely on recruiting young players to make up bulk of the squad. That included securing the futures of the young players already at the club, the likes of Saka, Smith Rowe, Balogun and Martinelli. Chelsea's process is different apart from the recruitment policy. Also, their time frame is shorter, they spend 600m in 2 windows and appointed an experience manager. Their squad rebuild is basically done, a few more additions and departures in the next window and they have overhauled the entire squad within 3 windows.

What people fail to realise is that the new owners spent 600m so that process or transitional period doesn't take too long like it did for arsenal. Arteta won the fa cup in his first half season beating city in the semis. Potter has lost to city in the first rounds of both domestic cup competitions. Plus from the outside looking in, arteta seems to have a bigger personality than potter. Potter better get his head in it coz of he's sacked, it'll be on him. Patience has to be earned not just given. There's still no style of play visible under potter. Arteta and even sarri had visible ideas, which aren't there under potter. Doing well in a mid table team doesn't necessarily translate to being a good manager at a big club

With Malo Gusto and Nkunku coming in next season, Chelsea will be fire 🔥. Nobody predict Arteta and Arsenal where they are today and their fans are skeptical about him as well. agreed. Arteta inherited a horrible squad whereas the squad Potter had inherited won a champions a season before and had lost only 2 players from the starting line up, 1 being a consistent starter in Rudiger and the other being more a squad player through inconsistencies in Werner. Another problem that Arteta faced at the start of his tenure at Arsenal were also financial. I.e. non-performing high-waged old player, which Arteta offloaded one by one, replacing them with young, fresh talent (with the exception of Partey and Xhaka). But Chelsea are in a completely different position and are seemingly taking a different direction in the high-wages matter. Would that be negligible or would it be their downfall, honestly I don't know...

As an Arsenal fan I also want to point out that, because we replaced players over time we had extensive scouting. Arteta scouted Partey and Gabriel after clinching the FA Cup, then scouted Ben White Tomiyasu and Ramsdale after another underwhelming season, then finally Zinchenko and Jesus. Might’ve missed some players but I’ve listed the main players that severely changed the way we play. Essentially; Chelsea have rushed and splashed on an assortment of signings without doing any scouting or attempting to build a style of play. That’s why they look so haphazard even after spending so much. This is why Arsenal were so good after only spending the odd 30 million on a handful of players and Chelsea are dreadful after spending hundreds of millions on luxury signings. TLDR; Slow and steady wins the race

Honestly, the Arsenal points are good but seem a little shallow and missing some of why things translated so well. For one, Arteta has a strength of personality and has been front and center with the messaging and a coherent strategy even when people didn’t necessarily understand the tactical evolution on the field because results weren’t following. It was clear and coherent all of the time. He constantly talked about unity and reaching the fans. He was a figurehead in this transition and Edu was implementing this vision with a sense of ruthlessness. Chelsea aren’t doing any of the same things. It’s like they are following the strategy in name only. They’ve followed the old strategy of throw money at the problem and appointed a coach that people are high on but hasn’t shown a lot of adeptness as a manager. During Arteta’s process, they gave him more power because you could see what was happening around the training ground and journalists were constantly talking about how there’s a sense that something is different. You’re not hearing those same things about Chelsea. They’re not cutting dead weight. They don’t know what team to play. They don’t understand how to put the ball in the back of the net. Etc. It’s just problem after problem after problem. And they are all the same problems they had previously, except they got rid of a good coach in Tuchel for a lesser coach in Potter.

another difference to note too, is that Arteta, albeit finishing 8th for the first 2 seasons, he did win an FA cup on the first and shows some visible progress (but definitely unfinished) throughout the 2nd season. I guess that's what made the fans (some of them) still willing to see what the team could bring the next season. And as we know, Arsenal been progressing in a positive manner since.

  • @cyb3rG33k

The thing with Potter is that at the moment I'm failing to see and identity, a style of play. With Arteta you could see that there was a style of play he wanted to implement, at the time the personnel available were either not suited, not good enough, or too old to take it on completely (old dog new tricks scenario), but you could see there was something there. Even when facing City and Chelsea in that FA cup run he very visibly changed the way of playing to counter the then better playing teams. But CFC's squad is basically new, we'll see with time if he's the man for their supposed "process".

I don’t think the processes are all that similar. Yes, Chelsea are trying to bring down the average age of their squad like we did, but that’s about it. At Arsenal it felt like supporters knew and accepted that there would be a long process to get back to competing, so the manager had time. Chelsea’s approach seems more like trying to make sure the manager doesn’t have any excuse to not win immediately. So one dispersed the pressure amongst different stakeholders and one put it squarely on one person’s shoulders. Also there’s clearly a different level of risk assumed by Chelsea in their contract amortization strategy.

Despite the similarities between the two approaches identified, Chelsea's process is not akin to Arsenal's - at least from a fundamental level. Arsenal utilized a more organic approach to transforming their organization while Todd Boehly's system in revitalizing Chelsea is more akin to the method used in Major League Baseball. Case study? The LA Dodgers.

To answer the question no... but they're trying to be. What Arsenal did, is that they slowly built a team around long term and Academy stars who LOVE the club such as Xhaka, Holding, Saka, Nketiah, ESR and Martinelli. These are players who know the history of Arsenal and the values. Then they brought in stars who were hungry and had been undervalued, such as Odegaard, Ramsdale, Zinchenko and Gabirel J. Then they sprinkled in some underrated talent like Partey, Gabriel, White, Kiwior, Trossard, and Vieira. Then they included players from the Unai era with passion like Saliba and Tierney, whilst shuffling out players that didn't play for the badge. What Chelsea did? They just threw money at anyone who was called a "Young talent" and slapped them with long-term deals.

0:57 I might be nitpicking, but as a Chelsea fan I've to mention Todd Boehly is not a sole owner as implied in the video. He's part of the consortium which consists of many individuals. Behdad Eghbali for example is equally important as Todd, as evidenced in the Mudryk deal. The ownership is tied up with Clearlake Capital Group, but also has wealthy individual investor like Hansjörg Wyss. Mark Walter, the CEO of Guggenheim Partners is also on the board. It's more than one person, and I guess the operations would be run in a democratic way within the board. Todd had major role of course and is the face of the operation, but it isn't a single man mission.

Definitely a very risky approach and lead to horrible cycle of toxic culture if results were poor, in fighting between manager, players and board ... seem to settle down bit now Eric Ten Hag is in charge hopefully carry on well into his 2nd and future run season.

The big problem at Chelsea is the short termism thinking of the fans and local media . Abramovich created a culture of sacking people if they aren't continually fighting for titles , it's hard to move from that to a more measured long term way of thinking. Currently Potter is suffering from the same expectations, where he's hired to build a long term project but the fans and media are judging him on past parameters of win the title now

The biggest difference I see is, Arsenal started really spending a lot more (without selling a lot) after they found the manager they wanted to back. I don't think Potter is that for Chelsea, but they're already spending half a billion in a year without improving that much. Looks like they're just making an environment of a lack of minutes for a lot of overpaid players. And they may be selling a lot in the Summer, but with the bs they pulled with Ziyech. I don't know if they really know what they want right now. Just spending money and hoping it covers the problems

Not the same process here. Arsenal build the technical and coach team sensibly with proper strategy in mind. Then looked at the players and made sensible additions. Chelsea just hired Potter and entire technical staff from Brighton 😂 no offense, but it's different when competing for mid-table one day, to start competing for the top, potter and Co. are not made for Chelsea yet. Aside of that, Chelsea is on a spending spree which tells me that all of these decisions may not come straight from Potter or technical staff but Bohley. If that is true then this is completely opposite to what arsenal followed.

The short answer is NO, they aren't. It's easy to talk now after the sacking of Potter, but Chelsea's owner's approach is to throw money and try to buy the best individuals, not actually analysing who may or not work best for the team. There's no natural cohesion with the youth academy, the fans also seem to expect too much right now, unlike us, Arsenal fans. And probably Arteta is the most talented coach to break through lately.
