As a native speaker of Greek, I directly found out that "magari" is a cognate of the Greek word "μακάρι" (makari) which has the same meaning (I wish) although it is - as far as I know - not really used as "maybe" (we have the words "ίσως" and "μήπως" for that purpose). It's quite intriguing that this word found its way into the Italian language. Thank you for the video, it's very informative and well done. I'm currently trying to learn some Italian and your channel is marvelous!

Romance languages have some Greek influence, I think up to 5% in some cases. So you probably find more similar words between Greek and Italian.

You are right, "magari" come from μακάρι, through the bizantinian greek (as others words that we use in italian, they have been borrowed in that period)

Im greek too. i visited italy a lot of times. i always spoke in english yet the respone i got was always in italian. i found out, apparently, italian people understand english but are bothered responding in english, but rather in italian. So you could tell there answering your question because they understood, but you didnt understand a damn thing, and thats why i like italians

In Georgian (in Kartvelian) "MAGARI" (მაგარი) means - "cool", "tough".

we use makari in Greece as well but only for the " I wish " part.

I think Matteo should speak at his natural cadence. It would be a good practice to hear how Italians normally speak.

No, it's not possible. Because the standard Italian language does not have a real accent, unlike the other languages. The accents are all different and change for each region of Italy. Sometimes, even, there are many different accents for each region. They are established by the local dialect .

Matteo parla piu lentamente che normale e non e la sua cadenza naturale. Forse fa per aiutare i principianti ma per me, aiuta piu se parla come un Italiano. Accento != Cadenza

Hi I just wanted to send you a greeting from America and thank you so much for these wonderful videos! There are so many wonderful things about the way you are doing itthem... having the subtitles with the Italian words you're speaking and the English translation under it is so helpful. And honestly you speak at a perfect speed not too fast so that it makes it easier for someone who trying to learn but not so slow that you can't quickly progress to being able to have a normal conversation with Italian. Both of my parents are native-born Italians my dad is from couple Campochiaro in Abruzzi and my mom is from San Lorenzo Maggiore in Benevento. I hope to go for a visit sometime soon so I'm boning up on my Italian. I have been using Duolingo quite a bit but have found I'm ready for something a little better and this is perfect so sorry for the very long comment but I'm actually just so happy with your videos and the two of you are so cute and so endearing that it's very much a pleasure to watch the videos as well as learn the Italian so thank you may God bless you and keep you safe and well!

Jessica, Cygnus e Paolo, avete ragione, ma, a loro discolpa, confesso che anche nella mia esperienza personale accenti ed apostrofi hanno tendenze fuggiasche quando si trovano in ambiente di sottotitoli… E ci si ritrova a doverli correggere nella descrizione, o con messaggi in sovrimpressione.

She said,,,here this..periferia, too much ..taleporia. And the Italian hairdress , understood her. Was a big surprise for us. So Magari, we use it every day,,with the meaning , I wish, we wish.

Hi. I'm Italian. It is better to learn a language starting from grammar and then thinking about words. For you who are french it is easier because your language is neo-latin like italian. Memorize every word is too difficult and can confuse you. So learn step by step and learn especially the pronunciation. When you'll learn Italian grammar, you will able to build sentences and words. Good luck!

@@johndemetriades3758 exatly Benissimo = superlativ of bene Bellissimo = " of bello In italiano you can say "good Job" "buon lavoro" (buono lavoro would sound awkward) But NOT buonissimo lavoro 'cause than you would use "bellissimo" that would sound like "beautiful" Buonissimo Is more for food Ex: questa Pizza è BUONISSIMA Other way "BENE " Is used with VERBS like "Well fone" "Ben fatto" Ex. "Fare bene" = "do Well"

Wow!! In Georgian the exact same expression means cool😀

The word 'magari' really showed my how direct Germans are in the way we speak. There simply is no real translation for 'magari' in the meaning of 'might', we simply use an irreal modus called 'Konjunktiv', but don't have a single word for it a possibility. We just say how we want things to be out explicitly in Konjunktiv. The last meaning of 'magari' translates to the saying 'schön wär's' which directly translates to 'it would be nice'. So even with this meaning of 'magari' German is more explicit than Italian since we use multiple words in Konjunktiv :D

I find that everyone speaks quicker than I read. I like matching the Italian to the English at the same time. I get very frustrated. I would love to learn but I can't control you. Yes, I have little advice... "Ciao" is the informal version of "Hi" - "hello" if you talk to a stranger and you want to greet them you should say "Salve" which is the formal version of "Ciao". Hope I've been helpful.

Attenzione per chi va in sicilia, perché in sicilia, la parola magari può essere confusa con macari. "macari" è un espressione del dialetto siciliano che vuol dire "anche"

il "magari" è un "forse" un po piu aggressivo. Il "forse" esprime un dubbio piu insicuro, con il "magari" si esprime un dubbio ma molto meno insicuro. Beh si, magari piu aggressivo ecco!

Maybe it's my Sicilian family, but we always use "Forse" a lot. But yes, magari is somtething you hear a lot in Italy. You can always use forse if you don't want to use the congiuntivo lol

You can use “Magari” when you want to say possibly only when you mean it like “Maybe something could happen” but you don’t have a strong opinion about it. Otherwise, “Magari” is used as “I wish”

Quando ho abitato a Roma un sacco d'anni fa, un amico italiano mi ha spiegato "magari" dicendo che se lui facesse una telefonata e la persona risponde "Banco di Roma," lui rispondesse "magari" cioe when i lived in rome an italian friend explained "magari" by saying that if he made a phone call and the person responded "Banco di Roma," he would respond "magari."

perhaps/however, or I wish! Difference between perhaps/however and I wish is intonation.

Margari seems to have as many definitions as the word "run" in the English dictionary.
