Yea totally! All they did was this song, but hey its a hell of a song. Any young kid growing up in the mid to late 90s is going to use this song as an injection right into their viens for a quick trip back to the good old days for a brief moment.

Flagpole sitting was a fad back in the 1920's. People would climb flagpoles and see who could sit on top of them the longest. Today they would probably call it the flagpole challenge.

It was seen as a test of endurance. Colonel Potter forced Klinger into staying on a flagpole much longer than Klinger wanted to. Klinger wanted a medical discharge but Potter wanted him to break the current flagpole sitting record.

This song is essentially a cry for an identity. There's an obvious jaded perspective on life and society in this song. .He doesn't feel like like he belongs in the world that he perceives, nor do others belong either, and yet humorously knows at the same time his perspective is blurred and skewered.

Zines are handmade, xereoxed underground mini magazines that were distributed at clubs and coffee houses and record stores in the 90s. Usually they were about politics, art, music or nerdy fandom stuff or had poetry and short stories or essays about weird, random subjects. Usually they were free or they cost a dollar or something.

Harvey Danger are from Seattle where I live. Singer Sean used to be the managing editor at a weekly leftie newspaper called The Stranger, the parent paper of columnist Dan Savage who lived in the same neighborhood as the paper's offices. It was also owned by Village Voice Media. My friend wrote articles for Seattle Gay News part-time and was invited by Sean to interview for a full-time writing position with The Stranger, but he left and eventually ended-up writing a book, for film and working with University of Washington. They wanted to be a witty, more artful band. When they broke huge for a brief time, they were appalled at how literally everyone took their lyrics. Fans would come up and say, "look, I got my tongue pierced", not realizing that the song was laughing at people who succumb to pop culture and fashion.

I was in a band when this came out. As always bands kept an eye out for who got a deal, who's going where, basically whom to be jealous about. When these guys played SXSW (this was when it was still strictly a music festival) with this song they were the absolute darlings of the record labels. HUGE things were expected. You could not get away from this song in Seattle.

It's sorta free association. And a flagpole sitta refers to a kind of trend in the 1920s where people would dare each other to climb a flagpole and stay there for the longest time...

Brad seems more like a philosopher with all these questions rofl This is why some people research songs before they react, so they aren't sitting here trying to get answers instead of listening to the music.

But it would be less of a reaction if they were prepared for the lyrics. I know I've never researched a song before I listened to it, and I doubt there are any bands out there who would want you to do that.

It's a shame these guys were a one-hit wonder, the entire Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone? album is fantastic. They released some other singles, which are good, but none really caught on. Woolly Muffler is my favorite of theirs, and Jack the Lion is a great song with a unique perspective on death and dying.

Great band, I'm always one to point out that if a band has one "hit" that doesn't mean the rest of their stuff isn't good, just that people struggle to keep up...

Like the guys vibe. Wants to understand the subjective interpretation. Picked up on it right away, but deep diving into lyrics were lost because of the girl. This guy knows how hard that song hit, it did the exact same to me. Still liked and subscribed. But discuss your pov, and keep like company. Much love
