Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The first in our new series What Wednesdays, but it's not Wednesday - one of the most common questions we get asked is what it would cost to convert a diesel Defender to Rover V8 power. So, here is the answer.

It's nice to see a company be open about prices for once. Too many examples of websites saying POA or Contact us for more info lol

Excellent video on the likely costs of V8 conversion options, looking forward to the ‘cost effective power up’ edition! I can see my D2’s V8 4.0 going into a Defender when I find the right one, with a few RPI additions!😉

We don't run these V8s for their fuel efficiency, but for the daily driver what setup considerations would you factor in for fuel efficiency?

I'm enjoying watching your videos, especially the Twin Turbo Tuesday but would like to ask, regarding fuel economy, is there much if any difference on a like for like engine between the Edelbrock carb and manifold setup compared to fuel injection? For reference, here in Ireland I'm currently paying 1.25 euro / litre unleaded but the nearest LPG station is about 16 miles away and their price on LPG is 0.85 euro / litre which is considerably more expensive than when I was living in London. (I'm taking a wild guess that red Defender is at least 30 years old if it's coming here, due to road tax differences: 1806 euro for post 1990 vs 56 euro for pre 1990! my RRC is 1989! ;-) )

In theory for the emissions test you do not, however we would advise that you check with your MOT tester or VOSA as a vehicle produced with CAT's should I believe still have them visible on the car as otherwise you are removing a emissions control device that the car was produced with.

Hi, I think I mention the answer to this in the video. But the basics are you need to find out form VOSA or your local MOT test station as to what emissions laws your vehicle would need to meet.

That 4.6 needs a fuel injection supercharger on lol that will up the power carbs are old school hard to keep fuelling right for rpm and load be looses of power though the vaccume effect ... injection is more effective/ efficient with power

Overall power through a carb or a EFI system setup and appropriated correctly for the engine would be the same. Granted EFi would be more efficient but at what % in a large 4x4 that has no aero dynamics then costs and customers requirements are always considered as well. We have produced loads of EFi engines for Land Rovers and other makes of cars power with Rover V8 engines however this carb setup is brilliant and is still correct for many of our customers needs and our own.

Hi, Sorry it is mainly Rover V8 engines that we do. We can import a new LS engines with the front end converted correctly to fit a Defender engine bay along with a new transmission pack. When I was last quoted for this a couple of years ago the cost by the time it was imported was around £35 to £40 thousand.

Any engine can be an option if you have the skills or know someone with them to make an adapter plate for the transmission or change the transmission, carry out the necessary wiring, potentially make custom exhaust manifolds, integrate the engine sensors with the dash etc etc.

the red one is newer then the other two ( see the area just below the windscreen aren't real flaps - ( flaps deleted in later versions) but its also before the Ford Puma engine ( 2.4 / 2.2) went in - as the bonnet isnt bulged as was required for the taller puma to fit

I built a 3.5 that I fitted in my series 1, 360 bhp at the wheels 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds and 0 to 100 mph in 5 carb, no injection or turbo. You build a v8 right and it will give results. and it gave 20 to the gallon if you did not put pedal to the metal.

@@julianthomson7398 I think you may have over estimated your power. 600 to 700 bhp at the crank would destroy a Series Land Rover gearbox. A 3.5 litre engine with stage 3 heads even with a decent cam would 220 to 270 bhp numbers at the crank shaft but would be rather racy and not suit most of our customers needs that want bottom end torque in a Land Rover.

@@julianthomson7398 Cool. Must have been crankshaft power though not wheel horse power. Rolling road (or chassis dynos as they are sometimes referred to) often calculate the power losses through the transmission and then give you the calculated crankshaft power.

I'm sure some would agree with you however many would disagree. That's what makes the world a wonderful place. Everyone has there own opinion of what makes a great Defender. For sure any old tired 3.5 litre engine is going to have poor efficiency and pulling power. Done right then can be great vehicles, most we see come through the doors here have been converted poorly and require corrective work and engine refreshing. But when you put the money into getting them right the V8 offers smooth refined power with great get up and go and a sound track that tickles most peoples interests as well.
