What Does Binge Eating Recovery Actually Look Like?

WHAT DOES BINGE EATING RECOVERY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE? In this video I talk about my own recover and share five things I do (or don't do!) that help to keep me in balance around food. Often people ask me is full recovery really possible? Will I struggle with this forever? So I decide to create a video and share with you what my recovery is to me and how I maintain it.

    Sarah, I wanted to take a moment to express my deep appreciation for what you are doing. I have struggled with my weight/binge eating/love of food since early childhood. I have picked up countless books and have attempted so many different angles/perspectives on the subject over my life (I am 33) and I have never come across anyone who has been as validating, understanding, knowledgeable, relatable, compassionate, and just *gets* my struggle. You articulate things I have struggled for years to articulate/explain even to myself. You provide clarity and hope for me. The whole issue is so much more than the diet mentality for me because it’s so deeply wrapped up in my mental health. You get that. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. You are addressing real problems with real ways of attempting to address them, not just quick-fixes. It’s so hard, but so worth it. Thank you for not being the norm.

    Thanks Claire! I did hesitate, but I do think we need to talk about the kinds of feelings that are often considered shameful. I hope talking about it helps normalise people’s experience ❤️

    Found your channel last week. SO grateful for your insights! I've had stomach problems for 50 + years and must completely avoid wheat/gluten, as well as corn and a few other foods. It's hard not to feel restricted when you have to restrict your diet, and hard to then not over-compensate on other "goodies" because you feel deprived! Add to that a childhood where food was comfort & love, and I've never really made peace with food. I look forward to learning a lot from you. Thank you for doing this channel!

    I literally only found your instagram last night and it is just so refreshing to not have someone telling me that i’m binging because i’m not eating enough, because I know that’s not the problem. Thank you so much! I did your meditation this morning because I had a bad binge yesterday and I feel great today. Thank you again I will definitely be following your content for a while!

    Oh my goodness, thank you for this, especially the advice about journalling on a password-protected device. I love writing, especially by hand, but even in middle age I'm constantly haunted by the fear of someone else finding what I've written. When I was a teenager my poor Mum confronted me about some teenagery things I'd written that she'd found in what I thought was a safe place. It was a pretty traumatic incident. And so to this day I keep my jungle of thoughts in my head. I worry about the safety of my laptop or phone too, since sometimes my kids will get hold of them. Working on ways to feel safe, and your advice helps.❤

    I’m so glad you mentioned envy! I don’t normally have social media, but I recently got an Instagram account so that I could access a particular Instagram live. Anyways, the other day I found myself looking up a couple people I was at university with and I found myself overcome with envy. I thought “everyone has moved on with their lives and am back with my parents in a peristalsis eating disorder vortex”. I felt so depressing that I spent the whole night eating.

    I just want to say thank you. You are one of the people on the internet that have helped me so much through my binge eating. I can't believe that I can say that now but I feel so much better around food. The uncomfortable feelings and thoughts are still here but I am thankful for them. There really is a way out of that awful place of unconsciousness. And you were and still to this day are one of the people that showed me this. Thank you.

    That’s the vicious trap of binge eating. I’ve done a couple of videos about the desire to lose weight because it’s so derailing for so many. It may be that focusing on weight loss right now is making your binge eating worse. Could you put it aside for a while to concentrate on healing your binge eating and then make a decision whether to go back to it? ❤️

    You’re reminding me of something I learned from Grace Bell (who’s a Byron Katie coach who focuses on eating stuff): she said to write down five stressful thoughts before eating. I was doing it for awhile but then I forgot…

    Oh my goodness this was just wonderful and so helpful!!! Thank you so much. I love the idea of 3 words to really describe the relationship I want to have with my eating. What do you think about the words , mindfulness and neutrality or detachment? Like to eat in a way that is more mindful and with awareness...and to eat without judgement of, this food, good or bad it just IS . I think I act on food urgency thoughts all too often. If the cravings are strong...what do you eat instead of that item?

  • @TheBingeEatingTherapist

    @TheBingeEatingTherapist

    With food cravings I would try eating the food slowly and with (your word!) mindfulness. If you stay present and really pay attention to the food you can learn whether the cravings are actually about the food itself. Sometimes you crave chocolate because you want chocolate. You eat it with enjoyment and feel satisfied. Other times you crave chocolate but no amount of chocolate will satisfy you, so it probably wasn’t about the chocolate in that situation. Learning how these two different types of cravings feel to you will be a helpful skill to develop. With the words you choose, it’s up to you. Check in with how you feel. My response to neutrality is that I don’t think it’s possible or desirable if to feel completely neutral around food. I want to feel connected and satisfied with my food because that’s how I feel balanced. The word neutrality may feel very different to you though. I have a similar reaction to the word detachment. Can we detach from food? That’s probably a hard task when there are a lot of emotions around. It sounds to me like you don’t want to feel anything around food and that would be a difficult state to achieve I would imagine.

    You mentioned that even if you aren’t hungry that you eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. How do you know how much to eat for these meals if you aren’t hungry? Do you just eat to the point where you are still comfortable? “Normal” portions?

    Is binge eating a "spur of the moment" thing? Sometimes I find myself in a grocery aisle (that I normally don't shop in) - buying my binge foods in anticipation of a rotten week at work; having to deal with my family; feeling lonely. I don't actually binge that day or may not even the next. But I can feel it coming on. The need to blank out. Do I set myself up to binge because I bought food? Or is this just an "over-eating splurge" and not really binging? I have listened to the definitions and I can answer yes to the majority of the questions/comments from the DSM5 but I am still not really sure. Is it considered binging if you have 4 or 5 specific foods that you binge with instead of everything in the house?

  • @TheBingeEatingTherapist

    @TheBingeEatingTherapist

    It could be. The important part is eating a lot of food accompanied by a sense that you cannot control what or how much you are eating. Binges don’t have to be spur of the moment, they can be planned in advance. Do you feel like you could stop your binges if you wanted to? Binge eating doesn’t feel like a choice (even if it is planned) but rather, a compulsion
