What Does Being Nonbinary Mean? With Miles McKenna

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I had the pleasure of interviewing Kim Possible . . . I mean, Miles McKenna this week! We're talking about what it means to be nonbinary and how that has affected Miles personally as a trans male. I really like and appreciate that the host is actually educated on these things! that's so important, because you get a lot of interviews like this where you can just tell the host is very uninformed and ends up asking terrible questions or makes the whole setting awkward and uncomfortable etc. so kudos to you on doing it right !

  • @esmeevanthof99

    @esmeevanthof99

    7 жыл бұрын

Alicia Ippel Okay, that's cool! I asked about it mostly because in Dutch the equivalent of they/them is very very rare, even most people in the lgbt+ or trans community don't know how to use them and so far everyone I've met who was agender or non-binary used he/him or she/her, so I was curious to know if there may be more people who do use gender neutral pronouns and which ones. The only time I've seen a Dutch person use gender neutral pronouns was once on tv.

I'm honestly so confused on my gender. I was born female but I hate being called lady or girl or things of that nature. When people call me he/him it doesn't bother me but it doesn't feel like me. Only one person calls me they/them but I just asked one of my closest friends to start using they for me as well so I can figure out if that's what I'm comfy with. Idk I'm just so confused. I kind of feel really great just doing me and being a happy little they but I fear the fact that so many people don't support non binary genders :(

I can understand. I was born female and have preferred male pronouns for as long as I can remember. I liked playing with Barbie dolls but I loved my toolbox. I had a princess dress that I wore because it made my mom smile. I thought I always had to be a girl, and when I saw pixie cuts, I wanted one IMMEDIATELY. Though, now that I know that I am not a girl, I can hopefully shed some light on the i guess "girly" Side of trans guys. Some of us like pink, some of us like makeup and hair styling. I personally think clothes hair and makeup have no gender. Do what you want to be happy, as long as it isn't harmful to your body. Be yourself ALWAYS! - Steven James

Unfortunately, feminism has left its fucked up mark on this country and made it acceptable to spit at any heterosexual white male you see. Dude, seriously? 17 is so young, that's ridiculous that people would expect someone to have had sex by that age. Like, if you want to, that's cool, but like... 17 is really young, what's the rush? There's so much pressure on people to do that kind of thing at such a young age, it's so stupid. Like, I'm 18 and I've never even been in a relationship before, let alone had sex! I'm bisexual as well so it's not like I'm not interested or anything, I just haven't found the right person. It's ridiculous that people put pressure on people that young to have sex and it's stupid to put pressure on people to have sex full stop. People really need to understand that not everybody is interested in sex as well.

I was born female, my gender is female and my gender expression is really feminine, and I am happy. We don't have to "end gender" we just have to accept other genders or genderless people...

This video really spoke to me. Many of my friends seem to enjoy to make fun of non-binary people, "i identify as a helicopter" and all that jazz. It's been really irking me for a while, but this has really validated my feelings about the whole conversation. I don't understand why people need to criticise, mock and stereotype people like Miles, who I love and have followed his journey from when he made Doctor who videos as a straight girl, to discovering their sexuality and finally coming to terms that they're transgender! It's just not cool, and just because you could never fathom yourself going through a similar experience with your gender, doesn't mean it's not possible! It really hurts me, because I know there could be anyone around them with these feelings, and these constant comments just discourage them to accept themselves, damage their self esteem and make it less likely for them to come out of the closet. Anyway, maybe I need new friends haha.

Because people like miles are praised in this backwards culture in America while people like me who are white straight non trans males are vilified daily by mainstream media such as CNN, ABC, and Buzzfeed. Don't like my answers? The truth is never a rainbow with pots of gold.

Since when were the only people who were hating transgender people straight white men? I said absolutely nothing about the matter. I have friends of all shapes and sizes mocking people cruelly just because they're something not very often heard of in our everyday society. People like Miles are far from praised in everyday culture, I assure you. I do not have some grand scheme against straight white men, I think people who do are ridiculous. Why do you think people like Miles shouldn't be praised in mainstream media?

I respect all and always will. I just wish a non-binary gender identity would accept the feminine characteristics more. I also believe the world will become a gender less place, in that we will respect everyone's gender expression regardless of their biological sex. But I watch so many non binary youtubers who see little less than being perceived as a pubescent boy as non-binary expression. Due to our sexist, patriarchal society, the identity of a weak, hyper sexualised, less intelligent, less capable female human irks me. I'd like to identify as nonbinory partly for that reason alone but I'm not angered or upset at my body just the perception of my body... which leads to dysphoria. Basically, I'd love for a more feminine representation of non binary were you don't have to pass as a guy to be respected or accepted, or pass as a guy to pass as non binary. Does that make sense?

If you partly want to identify as something to prove a point i really think you need to think twice about the identity before you go along with it. It's not the fault of our society that most people who idenitfy with this "nonbinary" idea all happen to try and dress like men or cut their hair short. Also I dont know where you live but in most westernized socities there is no such thing as a patriarchy.

If you were for equality, then why do you want to ban father's day and protest against any male domestic abuse shelters from being built? If you were for gender equality, you would call yourselves egalitarians, but you don't do that, and that's why I don't respect feminism.

Regardless of whatever you end up being most comfortable identifying with, I would just like to say you should NEVER base it on what others say. Miles is a huge inspiration to me as well, but you should definitely explore within yourself and your own mind. It's totally cool if you are cisgender, transgender, or nonbinary, as long as you are able to say that it is what you truly feel. If you still feel agender, great, awesome, but I just wanted to share my perspective. Best of luck in your discoveries. :)

I'm glad you got things cleared up c: I've seen people identify as non binary/agender just because they "don't believe in gender", which makes no sense honestly :p like if gender is merely a social construct then why do most trans people physically transition? Why do I feel dysphoric about my chest?? Boobs aren't a social construct lol. But seriously, I am non binary myself because of how I feel I should be physically. Of course I do have social dysphoria too and I believe not all trans people have to have physical dysphoria, it manifests differently in everyone but there has to be some level of disconnect with your physical sex, not just "I don't conform to my gender role therefore I'm not this gender at all", I mean that is just reinforcing stereotypes lol.

By a world without gender he means a world without stereotypes and gender roles like how it’s stereotypical that girls are associated with pink and boys with blue or girls with barbies and boys with trucks. He doesn’t mean gender expression.

I am a cis female, but I'm very masculine. I shaved my head and I wear a lot of flannels and button ups with ties. I also wear longer knee length shorts. I understand when I get misgendered, but even when I wear makeup I still get misgendered a lot, but at the same time I would never dress or act a different way.

If we're not gonna identify babies by their genitals then how tf are we gonna refer to them and name them? I totally support the trans community and the lgbtq+ community, trust me I'm a miles subscriber! But the idea of not giving babies a gender just cause how they might feel about it isn't my cup of tea. I think the way it should go is we still give them genders because it's how we identify people when their body is burned or destroyed in some way, and we tell them it's ok if they feel that they're not the gender they were assigned. But not in a forceful way. We need to freaking accept cis gendered people and trans people and black people and white people and freaking purple people 😂

I'm new here... I gave my girls boys names George and billie (so it didn't matter if they wanted penises) lol before the trans thing was even big and done it without giving it much thought (I didn't no anything about trans people at all) there are many unisex names but yeah there female unless they tell me different 😂

I think your talking about sex. Sex is based on their genitals. Gender is what they identify with. But I kinda agree with you, people should just accept their genes might not correspond with their sex and there’s nothing they can do. They will always be a little bit of their biological gender.

But you're literally not giving them a gender... you're just assuming they're going to be happy with majority opinions. If the whole world raised kids without assigning them a gender they also wouldn't mark them out as different if they were not just trans, but gay, lesbian, bi, intersex and so on. If people accept that they don't know your gender from your appearance then they have no reason to discriminate against you for not having the genitals they assumed you have, or not wearing the clothes etc they think you should wear, and if they accepted that they don't know whether someone's a man, woman or neither then they'd probably think twice before being homophobic too. But it's not like "I don't see gender" or something, it's literally undoing all of the associations which society has built up. Things like being aggressive dominant and having a penis making someone a man, or submissive weak and having a vagina making someone a woman doesn't mean fewer people would be able to accept themselves as men and women, but more people who wouldn't otherwise would happily view themselves that way, because they wouldn't see it as defined by personality traits and flukes like the genitals you have, but something which they can fit according to their own characteristics.
