    Hi! I love your videos and they've helped me out tremendously. I made the very silly mistake in the midst of some troubleshooting an issue with my electronic drums and plugged an instrument cable into the headphone out of my Focusrite 2i4 (1st Gen) and connected it to the input of my Darkglass Microtubes 900v2 bass amp head...and turned phantom power on. Since then, I've noticed some hum (not in the transmitted sound signal but from the actual amp while it's on). I'm afraid I might have damaged something? Does 48V of phantom power affect the headphone output or even the balanced line out? Thank you!

    I hear a huge difference in your dynamic mic with phantom power. A lot of lows without it but with it on those lows are more subtle. Sounds nicer with it on. Edit: as 6p Jay pointed out do NOT use it with a dynamic mic, obviously, I just thought it was funny that there was an audible difference.

    Thanks for this. I notice that the recording signal you've got coming out of your SM58 is really quite weak, even though the gain on your interface is turned up high. This is my experience too, recording classical guitar rather than voice, except I am getting a tonne of white noise as well, whereas your voiceover quality is good. Don't know if this is just the limitations of using a dynamic mic to record a quiet instrument like the classical guitar when it's designed for live vocals/amps or if there's anything I can do. May just have to invest in a condenser mic.

  • @sirzackefeller

    @sirzackefeller

    Or get an inline preamp / mic activator (like the cloudlifter) to go between your dynamic mic and the interface. It utilizes phantom power to boost the signal of the dynamic mic without added noise so you can keep your gain low, and thus your noise floor low as well. Or you could get a condenser mic.

  • @samuelconnolly347

    @samuelconnolly347

    @@sirzackefeller Didn't know these existed. Could be just what I'm looking for. Thanks! My worry about getting a condenser right now is that my flat has no sound treatment. The advantage of a dynamic mic is it rarely picks up my noisy upstairs neighbour.

  • @sirzackefeller

    @sirzackefeller

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@samuelconnolly347 yeah I feel you! I have a couple condensers and dynamic mics and live in an apartment with noisy neighbors. The condensers definitely more prone to picking up background noise, but a lot of that is solved by just getting really close to the mic and turning down the gain. Of course make sure you have appropriate pop filters to prevent plosives when you’re that close. But if that still doesn’t help then getting a dynamic mic which is less sensitive will help with the background noise, and even boosting it with a cloud lifter or similar device, while it just increases the level of everything the mic captures (your voice and the ambient background noise like your neighbors), it still doesn’t capture as much detail as a condenser mic, so it is still a better choice for an untreated room!

  • @roymustang8261

    @Samuel Lickiss I had the problem of ambient noise as well. Connected SM 58 to Cloudlifter to Scarlett and the background noise is almost gone, on the other hand the condenser picked up sounds from far distance and I was only able to use it to record voice over during night time, but not the case with Dynamic with the above mentioned chain. Hope this helps anyone else having similar doubts. Regards

    Great video Kettner, thank you. But I do have one question. I see a lot of threads on several forums around the internet that says Scarlett 2i2 is not really suitable to be used with a condenser mic and phantom power 48V because it doesn't have an external power source (only from the USB) therefore doesn't provide enough "stable" power for longer use (we're talking several hours to dozens of hours). What do you think about this and should I be worried? I recently bought a scarlett 2i2 3rd gen and was going to buy a condenser mic (AT2020), but after seeing these posts I'm quite hesitant (I'm totally inexperienced and a beginner in the recording world btw). Hopefully you will see and answer this, thank you beforehand.
