What Doctors Get Wrong About NDT Thyroid Medication

Millions of prescriptions of thyroid medication will be filled this year and the vast majority of them will be for levothyroxine.
Of those millions, only about 10% or so will go to a class of thyroid medication called natural desiccated thyroid.
Despite being only 10% of all prescriptions, thyroid patients have a clear preference for it.
Not only does it help with weight loss, but it also can help better control thyroid symptoms based on surveys of thyroid patients.
There's only one problem:
Doctors don't like to prescribe it.
Unfortunately, they are under the impression that NDT is an inferior medication to levothyroxine which is why today, I'm busting these NDT myths.
Here they are, in no particular order:
1. Claim #1: Taking NDT Will Cause Bone Loss & Heart Problems
Long-term studies show this isn't true PROVIDED you are not taking more than you need.
2. Claim #2: Newer Synthetic Medications Are More Effective
The idea here is that NDT may cause side effects because of its T3 content. This may happen, but it's also the reason that people prefer NDT... because it works.
3. Claim #3: NDT is Not FDA-Approved
This is true but irrelevant. NDT has been use since 1890 so it was grandfathered into the FDAs newer requirements.
4. Claim #4: NDT is Old-Fashioned
This isn't true either as all thyroid medications contain the same bio-identical thyroid hormones. The same T4 that is found in levothyroxine is also found in NDT.
5. Claim #5: Taking NDT Will Cause Mad Cow Disease
NDT comes from pigs (not cows), and there's never been a reported case of Mad Cow disease in the US.
6. Claim #6: Taking NDT Will Increase Thyroid Antibodies
This is theoretical and may be a problem for a rare subset of people, but not enough to warrant that everyone avoids it.
Claim #7: NDT Isn’t A Real Medication Because it Can Be Purchased Over The Counter
NDT is not the same thing as over-the-counter thyroid glandulars which is what this claim confuses.

I am so sick of being sick. My doctor treats me like a mental case. I have nodules on my thyroid, hair loss, ridges in my nails, tired all the time and on this levo. med I have gained 20 lbs. The doctor just ignores me and says my thyroid tests are good. I HAVE HAD ENOUGH. We are never going to get better.

My doctor fired me when I tried to explain that my NDT dose needed to be higher because my free T3 and free T4 were well below mid-range and I had a lot of hypo symptoms. She claimed no one ever needs more than 2 grains or 120 mg NDT. Celiac causes me not to absorb as well as others. So much for taking information to a doctor 😕

I got prescribed levothyroxine and metformin over a year ago, and felt horrible - tiredness, heart palpitations, overall a nightmare. I decided to stop taking all of my meds and focus 100% on my diet, walking to improve my health and supplements like selenium, b complex, inositol, d3 etc. After 8 mouths i lost over 30 pounds and feel the best I've ever felt in my life.

Doesn't anybody "google" this fella? He no longer has his medical license, He's considered unconventional. He's here to sell his own supplements and remedies at his store in Mesa. He was an internist and a DO, doctor of osteopathy. He's not and wasn't an endocrinologist. Listen to what he's saying here and ask yourself what in the heck you're supposed to do with his information as far as taking that to your own physician, because your doctor will think you're nuts. He just wants you to buy his stuff.

Check the package insert for Synthroid. I had every side effect including hypercalcuria and heart palps. 8 years suppressed for TT and cancer and it has been so debilitating. My dr lied by omission. By the 3rd week of being on NDT I turned a corner and felt the best I had in years! So done with these jerks.

My last Endo refused to let me try. She was "the best for cancer" on this side of the country. I moved 2 years ago. I've missed about 10 cancer scans (due to the pandemic & moving). I'm seeing a new Endo in June. I called in March and got a "rush" appointment because my TSH went from undetectable to 8.16 🙄

I see many comments hating on Dr. Childs and questioning his ethics. Dr. Childs has written information in all his videos that he no longer practices medicine, so it is not useful to use that against him. Moreover, most of his videos have minimal to no mentions of his store. I just found out he has a store after the T2 video. This man is a critical thinker and so generous with his information. I occasionally don't agree with things he says, but give this man a break. He's doing great work and helping many.

I changed doctors and became my own advocate. Thanks to the level of of information from your videos, he prescribed NDT and what a difference. The Levo did nothing in the month I took it. With the NDT I have already lost 4 pounds in 3 weeks and energy level is getting better. We are now working on my hormones levels to make sure I am balanced.

Great question! I’m on 120mg NP Thyroid bc Armor changed their formula several yrs ago. And it’s hard for my pharmacy to get either one. 😢 My PCP refuses further tests than the standard one. I’ve gained 50 lbs I’d lost yrs ago, hair still thinning, insomnia, exhaustion, IBS-C, heavy chest, on & on. I had paid for my own slew of labs thru an online Dr. No hashi but very screwed up thyroid numbers! So bad they referred me to see a local endocrinologist! I live in very rural area with no major cities within ~80 miles any direction. No idea what to do to fix this mess.
