    Aspartame is broken down immediately in the gastric juices into 2 amino acids and negligible ammounts of methanol, so it cannot interact with your gut. The studies linking obesity to artificial sweeteners just saw that statistically, fat people tend to use more artificial sweeteners, correlation doesn't mean causation and it could be an inverse causation, it could very well that fat people choose diet drinks to maintain or lose weight. See stephanie buttermore's video on Artificial sweetners for more scientific Data.

    I used to drink diet coke because regular coke turned out to be too sweet and not sharp enough for my tastes. I was already relatively resistant to sweet things even as a child (thus never experiencing a sugar high, ever), so I mainly enjoyed other flavors instead not based on sweetness, because there was always that certain point where I could no longer taste sweet stuff in foods. The artificial sweetener did a bit of damage at first, enlarging the capillaries in my face was my first clue, to the point where I looked like a severe sunburn victim (and felt like one, too). I never experienced this with _any_ other food or drink before I got into diet coke, so it was kind of obvious what caused it. The condition is called Rosacea, and things like broken blood vessels and pimples may also occur when it gets severe. I stopped when I realized diet coke was doing it to me, and I can't really enjoy most coke drinks anymore without the Rosacea flaring up violently. Now I just drink (regular) Ginger beer and coffee. Artificial sweeteners may be seen as a good idea, but I can assure you, its not the best idea.

    NOTE: While this list can hardly be exhaustive (of course), I think you should have mentioned Rebinia. It's steviol glycoside, or rebaudioside A; it's 200x sweeter than sugar (which is a common sweetness level); and it comes in granulated form, which can be used as a normal sweetener for drinks, etc. It can also be substituted 1:1 in baking, and is non-caloric as well. [Hey, since they're *_all_* bad for you (as it turns out per this video), we may as well include a nice popular one that's handy.] I use it to sweeten tea and Kool-Aid. Coca-Cola actually owns the exclusive rights to use it in beverages, but it's sold in re-sealable pouches (like shredded cheese) as Stevia. It's also sold as Truvia and as PureVia. Honestly, it's the only one I like; can't stand the others! 𝖙𝖆𝖛𝖎.

    I have a few questions. I went to each of the links that were provided to look for the actual studies but each of those links does not have any link to papers. View literature just a presentation of studies at an endocrine conference. I tried the final link which was actually an endocrine website and they talked about a study that was done but it was only done on 18 people.... I have no doubt that artificial sweeteners may not be good for you but you need to post sources that actually go to peer-reviewed literature because I can hold a conference and say "hey out of my 20 friends I know that eat artificial sweeteners all are obese so there has to be a major connection." A link to peer-reviewed literature would be a nice change-of-pace.

    Why? Nothing in this video proves sugar is better or worse than any of these artificial sweeteners. They're all bad, it's just a matter of: "if I'm going to consume one, which should it be?" And this video doesn't answer that. She pretty much said "may lead to insulin resistance" or other health effects- but so does sugar. We know for sure sugar is bad for you because things like fructose can only be processed in the liver. The liver is the organ that starts the process of de novo lipogenesis (conversion to fat) and since all fructose goes through the liver it means more of it is converted to triglycerides. Studies have found triglyceride levels are positively linked to fructose, (search google for various studies). Fat supposedly contributes to insulin resistance as well, as it blocks insulin receptors in cells. This video also doesn't differentiate between the many types of sweeteners, all artificial sweeteners are not alike. Erythritol seems to be the best at the moment, as 90% of it gets passed through urine as opposed to the large intestine (which is the problem for many other sweeteners), meaning that it has much less effect on the microbiome. It's also from a natural source and can be found in some fruits so you know it's not completely foreign to the body. More testing should be done of course. -Eat enough of anything and of course it will alter the bacteria types in your gut so don't go crazy. That said, most Americans are terribly unhealthy with their current diets. Pretty much any diet change would be an improvement for a lot of people.

    While yes, artificial sweeteners are sweeter than regular sugar, they don't put equal amounts of it in food or drinks. Even for recipes where you substitute sugar you need to convert the measurements to accommodate the specific sweetener. So the food you eat isn't necessarily sweeter than those made with real sugar. I've cut out sugar from my life and can now tell when something has real sugar because it is sooooo much sweeter than what I normally eat. So I would be carful about assuming that because the artificial sugar is sweeter than then means the food it's used in is sweeter than those with real sugar.

    I would encourage people not to think of it as a dichotomy and say that they are bad or good. My sister is one of those people that gets a big ass burger and fries "and a diet coke" so in that sense it may just as well be as bad as sugar if not worse. I myself was able to reverse my type 2 diabetes by switching to a more active lifestyle and instead of drinking just water (which gets boring fast) I drank artificially sweetened multivitamin drinks (to ensure proper nutrition due to my drastic decrease in calorie intake) 3 TIMES a day, so saying it contributes to diabetes/health was not true in my case. It also it very situational, if you're a diabetic and you're out a party or restaurant, a diet drink would be more sensible since you wouldnt have to worry about your blood sugar as much as if you drank a regular soda/drink with sugar in it. It really all depends on the person and general food choices.

    Thinks said for many other foods that claim to be _"fat free"_ or low in calories. People think the fat free labelled products are healthier, but they're not at all. If you look down your dairy isle while at the supermarket, you will see a lot of these fat free labelled products, milk, cheese, yoghurt, yoghurts is notorious for being labelled fat free. If you consume these things you're not getting the full nutritional benefits from calcium, zinc and other nutrients found in full fat milk or other dairy products that uses full cream fat content, thus making your bones weaker and more brittle and harder to repair itself if you break some bones. Fat free labelled products are bad for you, because they're packed with substitutes with no nutrition for the body to consume. I always try avoid these so-called _"fat free"_ labelled products. If you look at the contents of skimmed and semi-skimmed milk, just compare what you actually get from consuming them vs full fat cream milk. You will find a list of substitutes and preservatives in skimmed and semi-skimmed milk. I know Americans love to drench their foods on high glucose corn syrup. Or at least the manufacturing process they add a shit ton of that to foods just to make them taste sweeter.

    I think the claims here are questionable at best. 0:37 - I think we can rule out the hypothesis of sweet taste leading to an insulin release. Insulin release is primarily triggered by elevated blood sugar levels rather than the taste of sweetness itself.The taste of sweetness sends a signal to the brain to anticipate the incoming nutrients. However, the release of insulin is related to the actual increase in blood sugar levels, not just the perception of sweetness. P.S. to be clear I hate sugary drinks of any kind - I'm just making a case for using artifical sweeteners for granola or other supposedly "healthy" marketed products. I'm probably not looking at the full picture however - feel free to correct/ add to this.

    Your citations don't say what you implied. First of all, they are not links to studies, they are links articles about studies, which are notoriously riddled with errors. But since I'm not looking up the original study, I'll assume they are correct. Now one of the three you linked to was a study done in rats, which is notoriously unreliable. It said: "Before you scramble to dump out all those artificial sweeteners, researchers note this study doesn’t clearly say whether they are better or worse than sugar." The others were research more into mechanisms than effects. One did include a study of actual effects on a human population... of 18 subjects. That one showed no impact on the 4 normal weight individuals, but the 14 overweight individuals had signs of producing the effects they discussed. There was no control group. This is basic science. It is designed to lead toward ideas for bigger and more reliable studies down the line. It should not be presented as findings applicable to real people right now. When big and broad studies have been done in the past, they have shown very few ill effects from artificial swerteners and the few effects well documented in the literature are dwarfed by the ill effects of eating too much sugar. Seeker has gotten worse and worse over the last couple of years. If this keeps up, I'll unsubscribe. Go to Sci Show, it is 1000 times better and they actually know how to read a study.

    I have a question. What happens if you consume artificial sweeteners along a heavy carb diet? For example, I eat a big mac(high on fat/carb/pretty much everything) along with diet coke. My body will still get its sugar from the burger (so no excess insulin in my body) and I don't need to worry about sugar in my drink. Will this still be an unhealthy choice? I've been doing that for a while, only drinking diet drinks along with heavy meals.

    That's quiet okay as to avoid insulin resistant.Just take the drink along with meals as per your diet plan.Avoid taking regularly as the brain 🧠 could be confused to relies insulin in every intake thus lead to insulin resistant.

    More years ago than I care to contemplate, I first heard of L- sucrose, AKA left-handed sugar. It seems that this molecule, chemically identical to R - sucrose, but a mirror image of it, tastes exactly like ordinary sugar. Because of its left-handedness, though, not only can the bacteria that cause tooth decay not digest it, but also the enzymes in our own bodies that break down sugar cannot digest it. It is, therefore, absolutely free of caloric content, and would pass through our digestive tracts untouched. It would be very interesting to me and probably many others if you could look into this stuff and tell us why it is STILL not on the market, thirty-some years later. At the time, the explanation was that it was difficult and expensive to manufacture, but it seems to me that with modern gene-splicing techniques, both of those barriers could easily be overcome.

  • @blusafe1

    @blusafe1

    No chemical technique can easily separate chirally different molecules. I'm not a physical chemist, but I believe anything done to chiralize molecules can only produce a half-half product. Then there's the added step of separation. Biological methods would not work since ALL life forms on earth use D-glucose. You would have to genetically engineer life forms FROM SCRATCH with enzyme machinery that is literally backwards to what we know. Now you have to feed them...I hope you're starting to see the problem. The video's point remains, that overloading our brains with false sugar signals is the main problem.

    Honey and sugar are both carbohydrates composed primarily of glucose and fructose. They’re used as ingredients in many prepackaged foods and recipes. Both can result in weight gain if overused. The only real difference is that honey contains additional minerals and nutrients. but does not make it healthier than sugar as a sweetener.

    Don't buy soda or juice. If you don't enjoy things like sparkling water then get a pitcher, fill it with water, chill it in the fridge with some lemon. Eat actual fruit. Vegetables. Whole grains. Buy less sweets. Unless you have diabetes you can still have some sugar and be healthy. That's literally it. Moral of the story is you can't have your soda and eat it too. Diet soda just normalizes everyday soda consumption.
