Here's what sugar and zero calorie sweeteners do to your body

Ойын-сауық

A transcript of this podcast and more information about Rob Lustig is available on the website of the Duke World Food Policy Center at wfpc.sanford.duke.edu/podcast...
Today we speak with an expert on sugar and things meant to replace it. The stakes are high. Very high. Sugar consumption in the population is astronomical and so is the use of sugar replacements. Knowing the impacts of both could help experts provide dietary guidance and help consumers make decisions. Dr. Robert Lustig is Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco. He specializes on the regulation of energy balance by the central nervous system; body weight regulation, appetite, metabolism, and is very well known for his work on sugar and their substitutes and on policies aimed at improving the diet of the population. A KZread video on the effects of consuming sugar called “Sugar: The Bitter Truth,” has now been viewed 24 million times.

What was not mentioned, was sugar addiction. Some of the comments below are clearly driven by addiction. No amount of damage to your Mitochondrial System, or your gut microbiome, is acceptable. I know a little bit about sugar addiction. I have lowered my A1C from 13.8 to 5.7 by cutting out all sweeteners. It was definitely a path of addiction recovery.

Agree! I was addicted to sugar and junk food. I'm 60 and have lost 160 lbs by eating LCHF keto and learning how to fast. I've never gone back to anything sweet. I love my fasting lifestyle without sweets. Not even Monkfruit or stevia. Even if they are considered keto, I don't want to become addicted again to the sweet 👍

When I was in college, I wrote a Research Paper on the dangers of Aspartame. One of the issues, besides the breakdown byproducts, was that Aspartame competed from the binding sites for Serotonin which helps to regulate Gastric motility. What I found in my research was this: Consuming foods or drinks containing Aspartame restricted Serotonin and thereby slowed Gastric Motility. This in turn, allowed food to stay in the stomach and Small Intestines longer, thereby resulting in weight gain. My research did not show the quantity of Aspartame consumed, but rather, dose-over-time effects. The longer someone consumed Diet drinks or foods containing Aspartame, the more likely they were to gain weight.

I had been doing an 18 week strict Low Carbohydrate / No sugar Intermittent Fasting diet. I aimed to reverse Pre Diabetes, reverse Liver Enzymes and Cholesterol. I don't know if I have reversed the Pre Diabetes yet, but I have fully reversedmy Liver Enzymes and Cholesterol levels back to normal. As a bonus I also lost 50 pounds and I have not felt so good or had more stamina during this time for years. However I then started to eat Dried Fruit for a period of 2 weeks. I couldn't believe how ill it made me feel, nill energy and I really wasn't eating that much. Now I have to start over all over again and try to get through the sugar cravings which have come back. Also I stopped drinking diet coke after being addicted to it for years. They should ban it. It is so addictive like sugar. Best thing I've done. I worry about the damage that it has done to my body and teeth and the cancer scares. Wish I had stopped it years ago.

I haven't used sugar for years now but it is shocking to see in how many foods it is added. Even in our healthfood store, sugar is added to meat sauces in the hot food section. Instead of using herbs. As somebody who had Candida, I had to be so watchful and mostly ate at home anyway. But NOBODY can talk me out to sweeten with Stevia, Xylitol and Inulin my few "comfort foods" like coffee, tea and an occasional gluten free cookie. One doesn't need to get "religious" with food unless one is very ill.

I saw a study that shows that aspartame and sucralose does not raise insulin. The name of the study (2 weeks) is "The effect of the artificial sweeteners on glucose metabolism in healthy adults: a randomized, double-blinded, crossover clinical trial ". They say "There was no change in insulin sensitivity after NNS treatment compared with the baseline values. These findings suggest that daily repeated consumption of pure sucralose or aspartame for 2 weeks had no effect on glucose metabolism among normoglycaemic adults. However, these results need to be tested in studies with longer durations."

I reviewed that study and it is excellent. Being double-blinded is the gold standard. Aspartame is one of the most studied molecules in human history. If it had the negative properties that some posit, then the evidence would have been overwhelming. Clearly, that is not the case, since the results are mixed at best. I watched somebody with a monitor over a 2 hour period and his insulin didn't fluctuate at all. I just find it hard to believe our bodies, given how complex and adaptable we are, would continue to send out the fire trucks when there is no fire.

I don’t think you can’t compare the 2 things of something artificial being bad to random ppl talking on KZread saying the truth or not. I don’t just watch or believe anyone on YT. Dr Lustig is not just anyone talking on YT. I personally believe or rather, inform myself by listening to reputable ppl with credentials and then research the subject independently myself and form my own opinion. In terms of believing Dr Lustig, yes I do believe him, not only because of who he is and what he has done, but also because diabetes and nutrition and metabolic syndrome is something I’m already quite knowledgeable about (I’m not a doctor tho) so I understand if what he’s saying is true and it is. And I’ve learned more because he added some details to the conversation that I didn’t know yet. If we go back to the artificial things conversation. Yes I believe that they are not beneficial for us and interfere with the correct functioning of the body and that is nothing new really and it’s a concept that is easy to understand. I don’t think there’s one artificial food or object or fabric or material or anything that is not damaging to us in some way. Even natural things damage us now bc they’re contaminated by something artificial man made. So like I said we can’t avoid it all, but we can try avoiding simpler things that are easier to avoid. That’s what I wanted to say that’s all. Doctors still advise patients that have diabetes or are obese to use sweeteners even after evidence exists that they’re not the best

Xylitol keeps the bad bacteria from sticking to the teeth. It's not just about saliva. In dogs, xylitol is dangerous because their pancreas responds as if it is sugar and the dogs can get hypoglycemia.

Not all sweeteners are artificial. Is Stevia the better choice ? What is the impact on mitochodria and insuline resistance ? Better than sugar or worse ? STEVIA is plant based, act as a substitute to sugar. Stevia does not contain glucose or fructose. It is a non-nutritive sweetener extracted from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant. Unlike sugar, which is composed of glucose and fructose, stevia's sweetness primarily comes from compounds called steviol glycosides. Some studies have investigated the effects of stevia and its components on cellular processes. For example, a study published in the journal "Phytomedicine" in 2013 evaluated the potential toxicity of stevia extract on mitochondria and found that it did not impair mitochondrial function or cause cell death in human cells. Any other studies known ? or advice ?
