The old designs aren't bad, to be honest.

Yeah, it’s mainly the quality of the CGI that drags it down

I hate when people lie
To be fair, i really liked the proof of concept design and even the concept art with 4 hands. They were quite neat, but i suppose that there's no way to motion capture an extra pair of limbs that don't exist without them looking awkward compared to real ones, so i understand why that was scraped as well

I'm no movie maker I just make VR avatars but from what I can tell from that it likely would just take separate mocap takes to get the arms down and tweaking the animations. Might also help to have a tie between one set of arms and the other so they mirror each other a bit more naturally. This movie was also made over a decade ago so there's no telling if they were actually capable of that at that time, i just wanted to toss my two cents out on this idea. Also I agree, I think my favorite design was the oooold ones where the na'vi look more like bioluminescent deep sea looking aliens.

If you can make a hexapedle animal you can make a humanoid with two arms with cgi
They took something that looked like it actually belonged in 2009, and changed it into something an entire decade past its time

What I was thinking
For the time even now that is still revolutionary level of cgi, avatar was really ahead of its time
At the time those 3D graphics were nothing to scoff at. The lighting, materials and the minutia of the facial animations (like how the lips move and has such detailed rendering) it was unlike anything else being done in the industry at that point in time.

it was still bad lol
I'm so glad they ended up with the design we have now.
OG designs might have seemed a bit strange at first but they aren't bad nevertheless.

It’s mainly the quality of the CGI that ruins it
For basically just a prototype, the opd design is not bad at all, I believe it was really impressive for Century Fox to see it for the first time. It's just look bad if it compared to the new one.
they were still so very pretyy

I'm more interested in how they pee. It also seems they don't have sexual organs since they mate by having their long head tail connect.
It maybe just me but I like the older design better

Older design looks like it's from a video game
Lol that we're like "uh, that's beautiful, here's 230mil bucks"
Although Worthington and Saldana were amazing as Jake and Ney, it would have been great if the actress from Lost and the guy who played Jake in the test footage had been cast in alternative roles in the final movie.
they looked more cat-like

its called a test. that was never going to be the final version of it, but yeah, the purpose was to show what the end result would look like. we do this in animations all the time. its so that we dont waste the budget on something that can not be done. so first we test it to see if its even possible. at that time, avatar was an impossible project. it only ever was made into what it is today because cameron is such a perfectionist. which is also why (as ıve heard) many people didnt believed in him and his production and quit before the movie was finished. the first movie was made about in 6 to 10 years as well actually even much much longer.
Now I see how navi understand where is navi and where is devil. Because definitely Navi in original have more cat features, and avatar have more human
back when Companies actually took leaps of faith for true artists instead of popping out the same sht over and over just cause that's what they think sells.
Honestly have to say, Thank God that design didn't stay
Im glad we didn't get the old designs

Imagine how i would look
To be fair, this isnt god awful, ive seen worse, and at the time, this is pretty damn good and obviously not the quality of the final movie, they knew that, hence the approval
A part of me is amazed at the beauty of this movie, another part of me is deeply disappointed in humanity. So much money for a 2 hour movie that could've fed poor people and give thousands a home.
At the part of the video where he says "this is the most beautiful thing you and I have ever seen", the render happens to look like a ps3 render of my aunt. It's creepy, as it looks JUST like that hateful ass woman that's my mother's older sister
What if 20th century fox rejected his idea
10 million for that 💀not that it was bad but the fact that they needed more money
IT WAS HORRIFYING
Супер👍
Idk what to say
Ok for 2005...thats not that bad
So…it isnt the original Design Its a Proof of Concept then
10 million for just proof??

Well.. From that moment, they used it and improve it :) So it was not like thrown into the trash after the proof. They did use it, make it better :)
That is bad.
