What did Jesus mean when He said the first will be last and the last will be first? | GotQuestions

Are the last on earth, first in heaven? In what way will that last be first and the first last, as Jesus said in Matthew 19:30? In this video, Pastor Nelson with Bible Munch answers the question, “What did Jesus mean when He said the first will be last and the last will be first?”

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV Bible [1] Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; [2] By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. [3] For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; [4] And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV Bible [8] For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast. Romans 10:9-13 KJV Bible [9] That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. [11] For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. [12] For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. [13] For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. John 3:16 KJV Bible For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 14:6 KJV Bible Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

It’s a radical, total reversal of all human order and rank. It annihilates performance. Jesus said “the least will be the greatest!” The least! And then what we have a tendency to do is to compete at being least! If we can accomplish that, it just makes us first again, which is last! Whatever we get, we get as pure gift. We can’t earn it or deserve it. The source of all love, simply loves.

Imagine some gets saved at a young age and lives another 60 years serving Christ before he goes home to be with the Lord. Another person gets saved on his deathbed and dies a minute later. Both will be in heaven and will have the reward of eternal life, but other rewards from the Lord for them might differ due to how the person served Christ for 60 years and the other person never served Christ on Earth, since he died a minute after he repented similar to the thief on the cross.

It's merely Jesus making a statement of equality. For example, just because someone's rich does not mean that they've enjoyed a special blessing from the Lord and neither does it guarantee them a place in heaven, just as being poor doesn't mean that those people have been neglected by the Lord and are not going to make it to heaven because of a lack of blessing in this life by the Lord. It was a Jewish belief that as a man is blessed in this life so he will be naturally blessed in the afterlife, and Jesus was just showing the contrary, that those who you thought would be first will actually be last and vice versa. In short, earthly position in this life does not necessarily equate two the Heavenly one in the next. The modern equivalent to what Jesus was saying is when you hear people say "you may be surprised who you will meet in heaven and and you may be equally as surprise to those who don't."

There are a ton of duality parables in the Bible. Esau and Jacob were twins. Esau was born before Jacob. Therefore, because Jacob was born last, he will ultimately rise above Esau in God's kingdom and become the head(rulership), NOT the tail. Genesis 25:23 The Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.

He meant the first shall be last and the last first. He that is least among you shall be the greatest. The lowly, the despised, the unrecognized, the are nots, the have nots, shall be the greatest. The greatest in the eyes of man and in the eyes of the church will finally learn they are so unworthy that they are not even worthy to unloose Christ's shoes' latchet, and will probably be in the lowest position in the kingdom of God. That is, if they make it. For Jesus said how hardly will the rich be able to enter heaven. And many, if not all pastors and reverends and leaders in the churches are rich.

The meaning of the passage is simple, based on the parable of the Lord in Matthew 20:1-16 (the same meaning). God is the best communicator of his word. You don’t need to interprete the text with some other stories. The text means that there are those who believed in the Lord, who were in the service for a very long time but have not endured to end. They got tired of laboring for the Lord’s glory. In short, they left their first love (Rev. 2:4-5). They will lose their salvation in the end (as those seeds which fell on stony places- Matthew 13:20-21). On the other hand, there are those who came to the Lord lately, and being new to the faith, they had not done laboring as much as those who were in the faith for a long time, and yet they endured to end with their fervent faith and love for the Lord (Matthew 10:22). These same will be saved. Learn the parable of the *Ten Foolish Virgins* and the Lord’s parable of *The Laborers In The Vineyard.*

I enjoyed your presentation. Please consider a couple of things that may give you a different insight into the passage you are looking at. The Hermeneutical Principle of quid/materia really helps when applied to this section of Matthew. We are at a disadvantage due to a mistake in the chapter divisions applied to the text by Stephen Langton in 1227 A.D. which should have left Matthew chapter 19 to include all of the verses down to what is now Matthew 20:16 . When taken as a whole it is plain to see that the context of the Parable of the Householder is indeed all about eternal rewards but it is an adjunct to the previous problem that the Disciples had been arguing about, their own potential for rewards. All of the workers in the parable are believers but the first workers demanded a contract for their labor which is basically a form of legalism; whereas, the later workers relied solely on the Grace of the Householder for their rewards. So the last workers in the Church Age will have the same opportunity for eternal rewards as did the first, i.e., those in the Upper Room when the Church began - That's GRACE. The "basic reward" is not eternal life, all of the workers had already received that reward when they believed in the Lord Jesus Christ (the Householder). The Crowns (Rewards) that will be distributed at the Judgment Seat of Christ will be for faithful service to the Plan that the Father has for each of us - That's GRACE.

I wanted to scroll through the comments with the hope of finding a response like this, And indeed I found it! This is not a dig on this brother, he’s an excellent teacher and the website has been a wealth of information helping me to be rooted in Grace. But your observation is correct in that they were the first and only ones to demand a contractual agreement before working. And it’s definitely a parallel of what legalism and works are amongst many in the body of Christ. I was one of them for over 30 years. All those that the husbandman of the vineyard, hired after the first group, demanded nothing and went willingly. I would be angry at God for what seemingly seemed to be an injustice where I see a believer who hasn’t worked as much or as hard as I did, getting richly blessed or receiving a lot of favor. It took some years but the heavenly lightbulb finally lit up and now I see clearly that I cannot bargain with The Lord which a lot of us do wether we think we are doing it or not. There’s no insignificant detail in the Bible!

Matthew 20:16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen. The corn. God, derived from within himself! To be heir of himself, that no stranger may sit on the throne, that he may dwell amongst his own people, within his own creation, within his own time, for God is a conscious spirit, when he speaks to you, he thinks to you, for he is always, all things, and forever God! The corn. So the last within the beginning of the Alpha, derives from within the first within the end of the Omega. So the first within the end of the Omega derives from within the last within the beginning of the Alpha. That they remain EVEN! ( I THE FRST EVEN! I THE LAST, ARE ONE IN THE SAME ) That which is done in the beginning, expect it at the end. Many be called to hear the spirit of truth, but few will be chosen to believe him.

Here what Jesus meant: It is written: And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; Acts 17.26 And And when he had opened the fifth seal, (...). And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were , should be fulfilled. Apocalipse 6.9,11 And And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. (...) And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them. Apocalipse 11.3,12 Here is the meaning: all people born times and locations were determined before humanity even existed. Despite many people of ancient times being born first (many of the first), having first access to God's kingdom (by prophets and law), they havent taken it seriously, being made the last ones, some of what will perish. But some born last, in the current time, being this the time of beginning of sorrows (many of last) will integrate the two witnesses, that is, Jews and Gentiles that accepted Jesus Christ, baptized and anointed with the Holy Spirit, being literally 144000 men and women (from who some will be killed by the antichrist, Thus Revelation 11.3,12). Those will be called up even before the seventh and last seal and return of Jesus Christ (Rev 11.12-13 plus rev 6.9-12), those are the firstfruits, that is, those born in last and current time (many of last), will be the first (firstfruits). This is the understanding from a sealed by God. Does someone want to know the meaning of the temple of Ezequiel 40? Jesus Christ came in flesh and is Holy and Blessed, was killed and ressurrected at third Day, is the Son of God and God, and my God and Savior. God bless you!

By Jesus saying give all that you have to the poor??? Would be hard to give ???maybe a portion???? I dont know if the Lord would have ask him to give a portion of his wealth maybe would be different on the ruler????

This is about the house of Israel ( or the family counting the decendants of Jacob). When the Saviour was on the earth he stated that he was sent to the lost sheep of Israel , meaning the decendants of the twelve tribes of Israel. These were the ones He concentrated on. Mainly the jews Not totally leaving everyone else out. So during His time, the Jews were the first ones. After His death and resurrection when His Church was established with Peter James and John and the other apostles as it's leaders we see that they were told to go to the non-israelites, or the gentiles as they were called. Thus they became e last ones. With the apostacy as foretold in the letters of Paul , the true Church of Jesus Christ was taken from the earth. When He restored His true Church , the authority of God: His priesthood and the true doctrines of salvation were once again given to the peoples of the earth. Only this time it was first given to the gentiles. We are now living in the time of the gentiles and scattered Israel is gathered out from among the gentiles, except for the jews. After the gentiles have had their chance to receive the gospel of Jesus Christ, the time will come to the jews. Thus the first will be last, and the last will be the first ( in our time ).

Everything that Jesus said had some significance and relevance to His Mission and His part to be played within God's Plan of Redemption. The "First" referred to Lucifer who was the first to sin against God in leading the revolt of the angels - and the first to be kicked out of Heaven. Lucifer will now be the "last" to return to Heaven and will remain locked in Hell until all the fallen souls are restored to their former glory. The parable of the Prodigal Son (Lucifer) also refers to his eventual return. 1 Corinthians 2:7 : "We proclaim the mysterious plan conceived by God in His wisdom, a plan which has hitherto been concealed, but which God established before time began in order to lead us back to glory. This plan was known to none of the rulers of this world, (Satan/Lucifer) for otherwise, they would not have crucified the lord of glory."

It's to do with the rapture of the Church, as the church was the later chosen to come to God by repentance and Faith. The first reference is to the chosen people the Jews that during the tribulation will repent and place their Faith in Christ, leading the greatest evangelizing of all the people in Israel to Christ heading into the coming of Christ in the millennial period before the final White throne judgment seat and the final new heavens and new earth creation that will be the everlasting kingdom of God for all those who are saved because of their repentance, confession of Faith in Christ!

The corn. Matthew 20:16 So the last shall be first, and the first, last. This is hidden manna! Jesus is speaking about, the image of the structure of God, and it’s mechanics in the likeness of parable form, this is primarily speaking on the first and the last within the beginning and the end of the Alpha and the Omega. Example: Matthew 6:22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. Here’s a perfect understanding of that, Example: The light of the beginning and the end the first and the last, is the First! if therefore thine first becomes a singularity with the last thy whole, beginning and the end the first and the last, shall be full of light. For many are called to hear this but few are chosen to believe it.

The meaning of the passage is simple, based on the parable of the Lord in Matthew 20:1 -16 (the same meaning). God is the best communicator of his word. You don’t need to interprete the text with some other stories. The text means that there are those who believed in the Lord, who were in the service for a very long time but have not endured to end. They got tired of laboring for the Lord’s glory. In short, they left their first love (Rev. 2:4 -5). They will lose their salvation in the end (as those seeds which fell on stony places- Matthew 13:20 -21). On the other hand, there are those who came to the Lord lately, and being new to the faith, they had not done laboring as much as those who were in the faith for a long time, and yet they endured to end with their fervent faith and love for the Lord (Matthew 10:22 ). These same will be saved. Learn the parable of the *Ten Foolish Virgins* and the Lord’s parable of *The Laborers In The Vineyard.*

This happens at the end of days and so this person is the last and not from among the first century Apostles or Disciples who are the first in regards to time and also in regard to quantity (many). . In regard to quantity, the last (in time) will be few: . Matthew 7:14 whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and FEW ARE THE ONES FINDING IT. . The first to enter Gods Kingdom is the king of the Nations (not king of the Jews). . Revelation 12:5 And she gave birth to a son, a male, who is to shepherd all the nations with an iron rod. . Revelation 12:10 ** NOW ** have come to pass the salvation and the power and the KINGDOM OF GOD. . The mustard grain, the king of the Nations is now in Gods Kingdom! . In order for anyone else to enter God's Kingdom they will have to pass under his ROD: . Ezekiel 20:36 -38 “‘Just as I put myself on judgment with YOUR forefathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I shall put myself on judgment with YOU,’ is the utterance of the Sovereign Lord God. 37 ‘And ** I WILL MAKE YOU PASS UNDER THE ROD ** and bring YOU into the bond of the covenant. 38 And I will clean out from YOU the revolters and the transgressors against me, for out of the land of their alien residence I shall bring them forth, but onto the soil of Israel they will not come; and YOU people will have to know that I am God.’ . .

✌️ I think you’re over complicating this. Jesus always talked about our heart. All throughout the Old Testament, Yahweh wanted his servants’ heart and asked for their heart. He was righteously angered because the Israelites repeatedly failed to honor the Shema by putting God first in their life, worshiping him only, and proclaiming his name. Those who consider themselves first, they are going to be excused (last) from eternal life. Those who consider themselves last, or second to others and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, put God first before themselves, they are the ones who are brought into God‘s gift of eternal life. He wants our heart. He wants to be first in our life. He wants us to be fully surrendered to seeking his kingdom above all else (Matthew 6:33 ). This is how Jesus lived, how he modeled life for us, and what he commissioned us to do in his parting words (Matthew 28:18 -20).

I genuinely and sincerely, from the bottom of my soul, believe Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God, God the Son himself. I therefore take his warnings about losing our individual souls very very seriously. Because the simple truth is either that Jesus is exactly who he says he is, namely God himself, or he isn't and Christianity is a lie. If the latter is true then when we die we go into the ground and thats the end of us. BUT if Jesus is truly God the Son, as he claims (My Father and I are one) then the consequences of NOT believing in him are very serious indeed. Jesus said if we do not put our faith in him before we die, we will be separated from him forever in a place Jesus himself called Hell. Just think of the shock at the moment we die when we find out Jesus was indeed God, and the die is cast. There will be no second chances. That is why I send these messages in the hope that they help someone to find the truth. Jesus is the Son of God, believe and be saved.

It can mean whatever the reader wants it to mean. That's the beauty of the Bible. It is infinitely pliable and interpretable to meet the needs of the reader at any given time or place. The Bible was referenced both for and against slavery in advance of the civil war. Saved by sacraments within the structure of the church. Sure, if you like. Saved by being born again. Sure, if you prefer. Only the elect are saved. Sure, if that's how you look at it. Once saved always saved or salvation requires continuous renewal? Depends, could be either way depending on how you interpret a thousands of years old collection of books with no possibility of clarification from the authors. Nothing more than conjecture and best guesses based on research done on the culture at time of composition to go by. Oh yeah, and the Holy Spirit of course. The Holy Spirit was there to guide throughout, yet we have enough denominations to run through the alphabet over a dozen times if each one were given a letter. Talk about the real alphabet community. Christianity takes the cake there. So yeah, anybody's guess.

You have a bit of point. Yet many denominations believe in the "pale of orthodoxy" or once did (now that were are in the "great falling away"). Salvation is through grace and through a propitiation which is considered a sacrifice. If it takes our minds and thoughts to focus in something else esp. to create a habit, then sacrifice will need the same. Yet the laying down of our old life will often come through a conviction by the Holy Spirit. It's interesting to note if you take a bunch of kids they very much get the basic tenets. Of course they may not have the tools to deeply inquire yet adults are messing up hermeneutics anyhow. There is a correct methodology to apply.

@@skippy675 God said it men wrote it. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first..." 2 Thessalonians 2:3 (KJV). The term 'falling away', or as it is called in some texts, 'apostasy' means; to depart from revealed truth, to lead away, seduce, mislead; to defect, to blind the eyes of the people by manipulating the truth; to turn one from the truth. Fallen by God's standard of believing in His sons work on the cross. You said it in your summary. Your simple summary is correct minus the cursewords. All are basically nothing without God. I ne truth pastor put it that we are lovers without God. Revelations was a vision to John. It's in a sense a juxtaposition of the church post-12 apostles and what was going on in them, urging them to return to that simple summary you mentioned (creeds) and later confurmed by council doctrine. Revelation is also a long lost rescue letter for the person living on an island metaphorically speaking. Its main point is Jesus return and promise to smite Satan and renew the earth into a sinless paradise for those who believed in Him. All the different details and phases is how bad things will get and ultimately how the surface of the earth will be destroyed. The letters describe seven attitudes (or spiritual conditions) found in seven real congregations. The messages are a mix of positive reinforcement as well as warnings and calls to repent from the dominant attitudes found in each Church. The letter to the church in Ephesus tells us very importantly among that, Jesus said that without excuse, they must remember, repent, return, and refocus. Failure to repent is contained in the stark warning Jesus gave them if they would not repent in that he would, "remove their lampstand." The church at Thyatira had a false prophetess in its midst who was leading its people astray. It appears they had good hearts, but bad doctrine.

The first will be last and the last will be first refers to the resurrection. The first will be last as in they will return in second resurrection and last will be first to enter the kingdom because some of them will go through the tribulation and straight into the kingdom in the first resurrection. There is no ranking by God we are all saved by grace and faith alone by christ alone so no one can boast. The only things that differ are rewards. I'm not sure where you're getting all that from but that was not in scripture I'd be very careful twisting scripture THAT IS THE WORD OF GOD.
