There is a reason oft forgotten or just not experienced by the younger crowd for Gold and Silver having so many hard to find new pokemon. The developers wanted a lore reason why the player didn't find them in the first game! It's also the case that nobody thought pokemon would continue past gold and silver, so the new pokemon were considered a bit like an expansion pack and the original pokemon were still the core of the game. These attitudes may seem silly now, but it's where people were back in 2001.

This is also why the Kanto Gyms are extremely easy. Because the devs put priority on lore. The Gym Leaders obviously have to be weaker than the Elite 4, with the exception of Blue. Janine has the lowest levels because she's new etc. It's easy to see why this kind of design doesn't work out very well. (Also why over the years, more and more new evolution methods were added, this didn't stop with Gen II) Even then, it baffles me that there are Gen II Pokemon that are exclusive to Kanto. Even moreso, in Gold and Silver, the entire Dark-type is stuck in Kanto, except for Umbreon, and based on my own recent experiences, that Eevee is not evolving before the E4 unless you go out of your way to do it.

Also gold and silver used the engine of pokemon red and blue. The developers really went out of their way to put as much 'endgame' content, thats why you can fight red at the end. I really love gen 2 as my first game was crystal. The music from the games just hits me on a whole different level

so I've noticed two things in the list - Pokemon that appear in both "special" and "normal" Headbutt trees (that is, the 80% and 50%/10%) are listed twice on the list. might be good idea to distinct between these categories for the Pokemon also Dodrio is in this very weird place where it shows up on Route 26 in Gold and Route 27 in Silver. while the site lists Gold as best theoretical location, in reality either version would be fine since these Routes are next to each other. I think this is the only such case in G2 where both versions are fine but for whatever reason have slightly different locations.

Actually I like that you can so easily miss Pokemon. Because to me it felt like even though I was playing this game for months, there was always some new Pokemon to find. In a era without internet, patches or DLCs this was a blessing and kept the game fresh and some Pokemon super rare and thus special.

  • @CuriousKey

    @CuriousKey

Agreed. Having every pokemon paraded in your face completely ruins the sense of adventure and discovery. However, there should be a way of discovering the mechanics needed to find the pokemon - so if we have two different kind of tree, there should be a way of distinguishing them, or finding out which ones are special. This is where NPC hints could come in. Essentially a don't mind how hard a pokemon is to find or capture, but I do mind the method being arbitrary and only discoverable by chance.

There is still a way to gather all the Pokémon but you unfortunately have until next year to do it. It will involve buying so many other games plus using cheat codes for Gen 5 events, then transferring them all to Pokémon HOME, but it is somehow still possible to get all the Pokémon. It certainly helps that with glitches all Pokémon in Gen 3 and earlier are possible to collect.

The remark as Crystal as the "best version" brought back some memories... I *did* take on the Pokedex challenge on my physical cartridge as a kid, on Crystal. I can't remember if I made it a living dex (I doubt it) but I DO remember my challenge failing at 249 pokemon. When I had finally reached that point, Pokemon RS were already in full swing, my brother had stopped playing Pokemon and our GBC link cable had aged considerably. I, at that point, had not yet realized that Girafarig was not included in Crystal. But, in addition to getting my brother to lend me his Gold cartridge, I also realized that our old link cable wasn't in a working condition anymore. So yeah, my challenge back then ended with Celebi and Girafarig missing and completely failed when eventually the battery ran out and my collection was gone for good. I *am* thinking of trying it again on a VC version. Maybe.

I am amazed you are determined enough to complete the dex from scratch instead transferring your previous pokemons from gen 1. I don't complain though, it means more entertaining content to watch!

I agree with your rules, and I basically did the same when playing my runs for Gold and Crystal. I caught ALL pokemon that could be gotten, evolutions included, otherwise getting duplicates. Evolved the ones that didn't have their evolutions available, and then traded exclusives and gen 1 mons from a new save. On top of that I did trade between Crystal and Yellow to complete my Yellow dex with the extra mons needed like hatched starters and the other hitmon, but nothing more than that. It is honestly more fun to do so that way, and since I'm trying to master all game in retroachievements and one of the achievements in each game always is to "catch all available mons in their version" I always feel like I might as well finish with a living dex.

NGL, Gold and Silver were the first Pokémon games I played. Then when I played Gen 3 I was like, “wow, I like the new designs. Azumarill, Houndoom, Skarmory.”

Not even 10 seconds in and I had to pause. My first games was emerald and had my interest. Years after my save was deleted I played the gen 2 remakes and that’s when I fell in love

I've played Pokemon since it first came out here in the US. Crystal was thr version I spent the most time on as a kid. So many good memories and battles.

The greatest improvement of Crystal IMO was the availability of evolution Stones. If I don't remember wrong, most of them were limited on Gold/Silver, but infinitely available via NPC gifts from Poke Gear contacts.

In Gen 2, you can actually get all 3 starters on one save using the cloning glitch. The glitch of deposit a Pokemon into the PC, save, and turn off the game mid-save works between save files. So you start a fresh game, pick starter 1, get to the point of catching a 2nd Pokemon, deposit the Pokemon to clone it, and start a new game instead of continuing. When you clone the 2nd Pokemon, you clone both starters at once, and start the 3rd save. Then on the 3rd save, you pick the final starter and grab the other 2 from the PC. Then you can level all 3 starters on the same save file. If you're doing a living Pokemon, I know you mentioned you have to do playthroughs of each game anyway, but I always enjoyed having a team of all threw starters at once because it was amusing to me haha

Playing through Gold on GB 3DS XL virtual cartridge right now. Just started yesterday, so this will definitely come go good use. Thank you! I only have 1 console though, so I'll have to figure out how to get the Silver exclusives into Gold.

Just as a point of clarification, the precedent wasn't set by Yellow, but by Japanese Blue. Still, I agree that the 3rd Version not having every pokemon in it is VERY stupid.

Your experience growing up with these is almost exactly like mine. I also fell in love with silver version. Luckily I had a brother with gold so we would actually help each other out a bunch and trade. I think silver was the first version I actually tried to fill out the dex. Don't remember how far I got exactly but I think I was somewhere around 210. Definitely not easy when you're a kid with not as much patience...

9:25 The name’s supposed to start with a voiceless glottal fricative, /h/. It’s that sound at the start of headbutt that’s sorta similar to the Parisian , you know how to make it.

You got a like in the first 10 seconds. Gen 2 was my peak love for Pokémon. The lore, the Japanese style, the legendaries... the NORMAL MONS.... Kanto included... In my opinion and for nostalgic value... Gen 2 is my favorite by a significant margin. The only other game that kept me as busy was Emerald with the Frontier, and though the later is so much more interactive, a lot of mystery and lore was hidden away in Gen 2. Thanks to Gen 2 we will never be able to have our Spikey-ear Pichus and Shiny Celebis and those kinds of exclusive rarities are what make legends and myths exist and those are the things that really give power to my nostalgic feelings.
