Yeah, that encounter almost ended my first nuzlocke ever, in Alpha Saphire. The only thing that lived through that was my Plusle I just caught on the same route. It then went on to carry the entire run.

You are right, I messed up. It would have been more accurate to say "Pokémon from the Hoenn Pokédex". Still, a Gen 3 Gym and the trainers are spamming a Gen 2 Pokémon. A huge missed opportunity in my opinion.

The fact that you didn't know that Gyarados was a water flying type, despite fully completing the gen 1 and 2 living dex which he is in both of them, with the pokedex in gen 1 and 2 straight up telling you what type a Pokemon is and the summary page for each Pokemon telling you their type too is truely astounding to me. Not a problem though, love you're videos, just adds to the charm.

Old rod, start at the top right, fish 3 times, move on to the next tile. Throw on a podcast in the background, find a Feebas tile, fish up a male and female. Took me about 3-4 hours.

It's amazing to see these games start to skill check you in real time as the generations continue, you even had 3 real team members at the very end instead of 1.5

Emerald is indeed a lot tougher than previous entries, and quite a few trainers have actual strategies and powerful movesets! I mostly skipped past the fights in this video, but there were a lot difficult and interesting encounters during the story. It made the combat a lot more fun to play than in Gen 1 & 2 in my opinion :'D

That 110 rival fight is well designed, honestly. It's a "wake up call" fight that we haven't had in forever lmao, not as bad as Matador of course since kids do need to be able to beat it (my condolences to anybody who knows about Matador)

@@magicalgirllaurie A relatively early game boss in Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne that required you to know what you were doing or you *would* lose. It had a skill that raised its accuracy and evasion, Red Capote. If you didn't have skills to lower its evasion or raise your team's accuracy (or both!) you were probably doomed lol

Gyarados is based on a Japanese wind sock, hence the Flying type. It's also based on the myth that koi will jump over waterfalls and turn into dragons, so there's why it uses so many Dragon-type moves.

I get the feeling the Dragon-type was created at the last second for the Dratini line. There are other Generation I Pokémon like Charizard and Aerodactyl that look like dragons but are not Dragon-type. And it's disappointing that Mega Gyarados becomes a Dark-type instead of a Dragon-type.

Thank you for the info :') Dragon should have been the secondary type though, Flying seems very anecdotal in my opinion if you look at Gyarados's move pool.

I'm glad Emerald changed your mind when it comes to Gen 3 and you were able to enjoy it! I had a similar experience with Super Mario Odyssey. I didn't get pretty far in a first playthrough but then I tried it again and fell in love with it. It's great feeling when a game changes your opinion of it on its own merits!

Funnily enough, I was indeed a bit down on RSE, but not because of the events/tie-ins. I had attempted to play the games multiple times in the past and always gave up around Slateport because I believe the early game is really tedious! Once you get past it though, Gen 3 is an absolute blast and a treat to play! I had the experience you described with several games in the past, and it is indeed a wonderful feeling to have something you were negative about become such a positive experience! Sometimes the timing is just wrong, it's fine to try again later :'D

The Tate and Liza gym battle was comedy gold. Also, great choice with Mega Ten music.

One of my friends from when I was really little gave me his copy of Emerald as a going away present. It had a completely finished pokedex except for maybe one? I think it was Deoxys he needed. I thought that was so awesome. Later, I left the cartridge at my next door neighbors house on accident for less than an hour before realizing, started to run over to his place where my neighbor friend met me walking down his driveway. He was already bringing me the game! How nice! He. Deleted the save file. He told me right there on the spot. He said to me straight up. It was because it was a girl character. I don’t know what he was thinking, but my heart was exploded. I’ve been through a lot of shit, but somehow this event feels almost worse than anything to this day. He was like 8, and we were both brats, so like I get it. You do stupid shit for no reason as a little kid. But damn. I never saw the friend who gave it to me again. He was gone, moved to texas. And that pokedex never came close to it’s former glory. lol Just thought I’d put this here because I needed to get this story out there into the aether, spread my pain around lol and I like these vids and it’s about emerald so

Slugma is a gen 2 pokemon lol. I love how so many people forget that, since it has 0 presence in those games and gen 3 spams them at you.

You're like the first person to not get walled by Tate&Liza on your first playthrough. Swampert and Aggron is an amazing combo against them though.

34:00 How tf did you not know about Gyarados typing after completing Gen 1 & 2's Dexes. Also, don't play FireRed, play LeafGreen instead. That's the only Gen 3 game Slowpoke can be caught.

@@FUNFLL Slowpoke and Slowbro seem to be exclusive to Leaf Green, but Bellsprout can be gotten by breeding a Weepinbell from XD. There seem to be a few other "exclusives" that are available in XD, but not all of them, like Slowpoke.

Slowpoke is the only family line in Gen 3 that's only available in one of the games. Everyone else is available in at least two. Seems like the point of XD was to make that true, but they forgot about Slowpoke.

For me it’s Gen 4 just barely because of the Phys/Spec split, but Gen 3 is definitely a very close second.

Big fan of your work as always! Here are a couple of tips depending on how you want to complete this challenge. 1) If you plan to get the Celebi from the JPN Bonus Disk, the Gamecube is region locked so you will also need a completed GBA save file in order to redeem the Celebi. FR/LG will require the Sevii Island quest to be completed, so for the sake of your sanity, you should play either one of Ruby or Sapphire in Japanese. 2 birds in one stone. The JPN Bonus Disc does recognize Emerald as well as FR/LG so that's also an option if you want that as well as long as they are in japanese. 2) Jirachi is available from the US Bonus Disc or from the PAL version of Pokemon Channel (which is a game that requires you to watch plenty of Pokemon media for its completion). I would advise to use the Bonus Disc instead because its only requirement is to start a save file and obtain the Pokedex to get a Jirachi. It's only compatible with English versions of R/S sadly (Same with Channel but PAL Channel can send the Jirachi to any R/S game of any region that matches the language setting). 3) For Mew there are a couple of Distribution ROMs available online which had a few Mew events available you can use to redeem it. The Japanse version of Emerald was the only one who received the distribution of the Old Sea Map but pretty sure there are other distributions that can get you a Mew (Like the movie MYSTRY one). 4) Once you begin Pokemon Colosseum take into account that it has a very annoying mechanic where Shadow Pokemon use a move called Shadow Rush which is a base 90 power attack that causes recoil. It's one of my main grievances with the game itself so plan accordingly because if your Shadow Pokemon is too weak, it will kill itself on recoil. Also there are a couple of Sleep immune Pokemon (Notcowl and Ariados) but I am probably getting ahead by far too much :P Hope this helps and best of luck!

Very nice watching this series, since I'm completing Pokédex in every game too, starting from Gen 1 (actually the Living Dex is something that I aim too, in every main save, but for now just focusing on the Pokédex).

I was really looking forward to this video! Emerald is my fave game in the series, with the Best Region and Best Boy (Wally), plus a truckload of cool new mons, so seeing your spin on the Adventure was all the more enjoyable :D

@@gurururuwarararara8164 The Brendan/May rival ends up a bit underwhelming, but I think they were on to something pretty interesting with their personalities, it's not as sugary as later Friendly Rivals would be. They also offer an interesting parallel with both the player character and Wally (who is the dark horse surprize and is my fave Human Character in the franchise for the subtext RSE offers)

Gen 3 has some back tracking, but if you thing about it, there are many different ways you could have backtracked. Some you didnt even though about on your first playthrough probably, and I love that on gen 3

I admire your work. Good luck on your quest, however far you wish to take it. Personally, my own goal is simply to create a Living Regional Dex in each game, mostly due to Sword and Shield's limitations.

That ending... God, you're a beautiful disaster; quality content! XD I still remember my first fight with Wallace.

Honestly, I don't blame you for not knowing Gyarados is part flying type, because it makes no goddamn sense. To this day, the only physical flying-type move it learns is Bounce. (Except in gen 9 apparently, since Game Freak didn't feel like putting it in the game. 🤦)

Thank you Lyra for letting me relive my childhood memories of watching on in abject amazement at my younger brother's unique lack of prowess at Pokémon.

I thought Lyra was being sarcastic when he thought Groudon was Fire type, but now seeing that he thought Gyarados was Water-Dragon instead of Water-Flying, I'm concerned.

the moment I saw you pick Mudkip and state you wouldn't be catching many Pokémon I knew the horror you were in for with the 3rd rival battle, its the same issue speed runners have, that fight is brutal but I THINK May is slightly harder but not sure why off the top of my head.

funny enough that fight is pretty well "solved" so it's not a major reset point, just can lose time ifyou're unlucky with the slugma while stuffing marshompt full of poke-drugs :D

Gyarados is Water/Flying because Gamefreak originally wanted to keep the dragon typing pretty rare for balance reasons. That is also why Charizard is Fire/Flying instead of Fire/Dragon despite obviously being a dragon.

I've always thought that though less fun, the optimal way to get through Pokemon was to pick a small number and focus exp on just them. Thank you for proving me wrong.

Having played emerald since release, and having watched dozens of speedruns of emerald, this was extremely fun to watch. Seeing someone experience the game without complete knowledge was so refreshing, and I'm glad getting over the hurdles the game threw at you ended up being a good time!

Gyarados and Charizard both having flying typing instead of dragon is hilarious. Feels very gen 1 to me.

Charizard is a lizard all the dex entries say as much, so I guess it isn't a dragon. Idk. Sure looks like one. And Mega X is one. Magikarp is based on a Japanese proverb of a determined carp that leaps so high it becomes a *flying* dragon after it successfully leaps over a waterfall. In the 3d switch games Gyarados can fly, so it all tracks.

Emerald is one of the greatest Pokémon games. I’ve replayed it countless times.

I completed my living dexes in Arceus and Scarlet. Watching your videos is what got me into it.

I'm so glad I just finished Alpha Sapphire, now I can watch these videos without feeling like they are spoiling everything!

Wait till he plays Legends Arceus. He'll have a heart attack when he sees Gyarados ACTUALLY fly. And of course he doesn't have wings, neither do traditional Chinese dragons, which he's based on, yet they can still fly.
