What Christians Don't Get About LGBT Folks

Rosaria Butterfield discusses the importance of Christians recognizing LGBTQ+ individuals as fellow image-bearers and not treating them as separate species. Butterfield encourages Christians to focus on building relationships rather than fixating only on sins or identities. She emphasizes the value of spending time with LGBTQ+ people, listening to their stories, and creating welcoming environments for open dialogue and understanding.
(1) People are people.
(2) Outward sins are not always the root issue.
(3) Worldview matters.

She’s 100% on point. We don’t refer to people who’ve come to Christ and struggle with drug addiction as druggies or struggle with any other sin by referring to that sin. We point people to God and let God do the work because once you point to a person to God, the rest is between that person and God.

I think the problem arises when Christian teachers affirm sin. Any sin. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them. Romans 1:32

Problem I have with that is that Jesus and I believe the apostles were quick to accept sinners into their circle but they were also quick to call out their sin and call them to repent. Jesus didn't seem to shy away from someone's obvious sins in an effort to share the gospel. Why would I need a savior if I see no sin in my life? Some of the most loving people I know have not avoided the sin that need to be called out in my life. Don't pretend that if you avoid upsetting someone about their sin, the holy spirit will be more capable in saving them or sanctifying them. Look at what Jesus and the apostles did as well as the early church and model your conduct after them. And that doesn't include avoiding obvious elephants in the room.

If someone comes to christ and is an alcoholic we encourage them to get treatment for their alcoholism If they are an adulterer as in, a sex addict, we encourage them to get treatment. Anyone who is a continuous sinner, we encourage them to find help in God and elsewhere if possible. If someone is an open homosexual in church, i would also encourage them to seek help.

Listen. I’m a Christian and went through both homosexual feelings and trans feelings. And when I found Christ, it freed me. People think being a Christian will restrict you and make you feel trapped, but when you fully commit, it’s so freeing! Now I love everyone, as the Bible says I should do. Now yes, we all sin. And a true follower of Jesus will realize that they’ve sinned too and they’re not perfect. And I know I have sinned. Giving your life to Jesus will get rid of those feelings, like they did for me and so many people I know. It’s truly amazing what the Lord can do

@@joewright9879 God never lost you. He knows where his children are at all times. It is the child that has to search him out. I look at like this. A small family of 3 (Mom, Dad, and child) goes to a shopping mall for a afternoon and in the mall the family walks into a toy store. The child comes across a toy that really attracts their attention and they start to play with it to the point mom and dad can't get the child to leave the store with them. They decide to play a lesson on the child and walk around a corner where they keep constant sight on the child at all times but they are just out of the child's vision. After a few minutes the child looks up at mom and dad and they are nowhere to be seen and the child now realizes that he/she is alone and lost. They aren't really lost because mom and dad still have the child in plain view from their vantage point and know exactly where the child is and what they are doing and they can just poke back around the corner and pick the child up in a seconds notice but the child thinks they are lost. That is how we are with God. We don't see him or know where he is or even if he is but he always sees and knows where we are and what we are doing. It is us that is lost and feel alone. This is why they tell them that what they are identifying as isnt how they should be making sense of the world. Because the only realy way to make sense of the world is through God. What makes sense is it is lust and temptation, that should be turned away from since it is sin. It is not something to make part of your identity. Your identity should be in Christ, not sin! 2:04 you talk about it as food, yet you will not eat your greens, only the deserts that are tasty. Its not healthy to only eat desert.

"Distorted by original sin", that's a fancy way of saying we are all depraved and come into this world separated from a holy God and deserving of damnation; it's only by the saving grace of God through Jesus Christ that anyone is able to be saved. Jesus is more than your friend and buddy, He's your Lord if indeed you are saved. Jesus dined and befriended all types of people in sin, you'll notice that He never left them in their sin once they were His and saved. Zaccheus, when confronted by Christ repented and returned the stolen money. Paul, when confronted by Christ repented and made a 180 degree change in his life. I can't stand here and say "hey I'm a drunkard adulterer who is friends with Christ and He loves me as I am" and think I'm saved; if indeed Christ has confronted you and arrested your heart and given you new affections and desires then you will bear fruit and be changed.

I made the mistake of scrolling down and reading some of the comments. A lot of them actually. And I'm actually exhausted. This is a complicated matter understandably. But it seems like we keep making this one consistent mistake with each other. We don't know how to listen to each other. We're so quick to correct each other, but we don't take the time to hear someone out. The bible is the bible. What is says is what is says. People, however they identify, will be people. Right or wrong, we don't serve each other well by telling each other what's wrong with them or their mindset. Us vs Them, it's BS. If they system in our country wasn't set up the way it was, LGBTQ+ wouldn't feel the need to do what they do be seen, validated, and quite frankly, survive. On the other hand, Christians wouldn't be so bent out of shape if they didn't feel like everything was attacking them and they have to fight back with the word of God. We'll keep going around in circles with each other, debating sin, identity, gender, etc, etc, till the day we die at this point if we don't take the time to do self correction and healing. Then take the time to talk to each other and figure stuff out. Be honest about your beliefs, but also, be considerate of the person you're talking to, on either side. If that's confusing, just figure it out. Take the time to navigate that with someone different from you in all aspects. You might not reach a mutual agreement, but at the least if you try and try respectfully, without sacrificing who you are, you'll understand each other better. If you understand the other person, you'll continue seeing them and what they do on all sides from a negative viewpoint if you have one. And I don't have it all figured out, I just want some peace. But I'm not naive to believe that peace will come via agreement, but it could possibly come with understanding. It won't be everyone, but if there's a lot of us, we can work together to change our society, culture and eventually the system and start the process of breaking down stigmas so that all of they things we did in this generation, the next won't even have to experience. Ideally. Maybe.

I completely agree with you. The reason that certain topics such as religion and politics are labelled as "taboo" isn't that they're inherently divisive or offensive. It's the fact that people are so self-righteous and eager to fight for their viewpoint that these issues have become so polarized. By only associating with those of the same faith and background, people's environments turn into massive circlejerks where the same stubborn mentalities reinforce each other and no new perspectives are introduced. It would be much more educational if the previously avoided topics regarding identity, worldview, politics, and religion became more open. In an ideal world, we could all learn from each other and know that "different" doesn't always mean "wrong." But as you said, our current society makes this thought impossible.

And to be frank, multiple Christianities, too. And how much chance, did gay people get, to consider anything, or decide if conversion, or alteration, or metanoia, would even be offered to them, for the last 1600 years? Is it likely, say, that Matthew 5:18, decided their fate for them, in advance, in many Christian nations, that might keep many old punishments, in vogue, biblically? Otherwise, it's a solid idea, so don't let me discourage you, over much. On the issue of not focusing on individual sins but sin itself: Yes I agree to some degree, many Christians tend to get so unbalanced and focus on one specific sin to the point where it almost becomes an idol to them. Everything begins to revolve around that 1 sin and the message of the Gospel gets lost. HOWEVER, I am not aware of many other sins which people are so proud to define themselves with. It's also one of the only sins I am aware of of which directly attacks the truth of scripture by claiming you can be actively homosexual and Christian. I'm not aware of any communities which teach you can be an actively murderous Christian, or an actively adulterous Christian, or an actively covetous Christian etc. While it's true that the wages for ALL sin is death, it seems to me that not all sins have the same effects or consequences in our lives. I think the seriousness of homosexuality and other sexual immorality should be a warning sign to us that the nations are falling further and further under God's judgement. God is slowly but surely giving mankind over to the deepest, darkest desires of our hearts and it is a terrifying thing to behold.

C C How about turning around what you just said and look at it from another perspective... For decades it has been perfectly acceptable to fornicate, lust, and very few people said anything about this. One homosexual pops up on TV and protests, death threats, violence, and vandalism occurs. LGBTQ people Have been tortured, harassed, rejected, ostracized, lost jobs, family members, friends, housing situations, just for being gay. Have you ever heard of anyone losing a job because some guy is having sex with his girlfriend? Yes, there needs to be a community for these people and there needs to be a sense of unity. Without it, suicide rates increase and nothing gets better. That is why you see a community of people who come together with the understanding that they’re different than everyone else. This does not occur in heterosexual populations and that’s why you see the difference.

Very much what's said in Romans 1. And you're right, lgbtq gets so much attention from the church today because they and the culture as a whole are posing and posturing for it, they are parading it around, they are the ones demanding that they not only be accepted but celebrated without reservation. They are the ones defining themselves by their sexual practices. They are the ones demanding the various forms of media, such as movies and TV shows, represent them and represent them positively.

First and foremost, most Queer people do not accept your presumption that Queerness is sinful. Secondly Queer people don’t define themselves around their sexuality, their identification with the group is one of culture, politics and survival. Queer community exists because outside circumstance which force us together. Saying it’s just a obsession with sexuality ignores all the relevant cultural factors. Also, Queer Christians exist. As I’ve already said before most Queer people don’t accept the premise that homosexuality or Queerness is sinful so it provides no issue in their Christian walk. Secondly, the grace of God is not limited to certain sins. Your faith doesn’t dissolve if you have an affair anymore than it dissolves when you make a moral error. The length of a sin does not make it strong enough to overcome God’s forgiveness. And to your last point, of Queer people as an indicator of cultural health, it’s nonsense. I’m sorry but not executing people for breaches of normalcy is not a sign of the end of the West; rather it is the extension of Christian values.

In my personal opinion; The Gospel offends any sinner. We can take time to know people and indeed we do. We can identify areas where we have similarities. But if you are faithful to tell the Gospel as it is, you are going to offend people. It's going to be identified as hate no matter how it is put especially now more than ever when it is seen as a personality. Liars, thieves, murderers, agnostics, members of other religions and cults also know no identity outside of sin and they have the same reason to reject the gospel as the LGBT. The idea that we have made a unique exception of one group has put us at a place where it becomes even harder to reach out to them in truth. It is much better to receive open hate and ridicule for not looking like your love your neighbor to the world, to be misunderstood in your attempts to show the sinner's radical disagreement with God than a false allegiance that puts both you and them in harm's way.

How is it with Gods "command": "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, BE FRUITFULL, AND MULTIPLY, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth." GENESIS 1, 28 How will it be possible for you to fulfill this words? Did God a mistake when He created us? Should He not have said: "Well there is a small minority that will decide for themselves if they like to submit to My commandments. They can do as they like as long they accept Me and My other rules and commandments." It's like inviting guests into your house and one of them is starting to smash your cups and after doing so he will tell you that he really likes and apreciate you but he has a huge problem with cups. He must smash and destroy them. So be nice and kind and accept his "problem". What will you say to your guest? "Oh that's no problem! If you feel this way than you can do as you like as long as you won't destroy my other stuff too! You surely will tell this guy: "Thank you for telling me about your problem, but you will have to replace my cups and for next time I am sorry to tell you that I cannot invite you to my home!"

I have to say: I didn’t “identify as” lgbt. I was *identified.* In the past, they simply talked about “people who do x, y, and z.” It was only when people, such as Freud, started inventing theories to explain why some people act in ways they didn’t understand that lgbt groups started to crystallize into “identities”. When this happened, the option of remaining closeted and doing the same as everyone else got subtly undermined. Now, spouses had cause for suspicion if their spouses showed insufficient sexual interest and the military had cause to screen *drafted* recruits for proclivities that may or may not have been acted upon. Lgbt were now, themselves, informed of what they were and that they were “impostures”. In this condition, there wasn’t much option but to co-opt this identification, because passivity meant living as an “infiltrator”. Fortunately for them, this coincided with the sexual revolution, so there was a basis on which to co-opt this and frame it effectively. The sexual revolution, however, also gave spouses cause to want their partners to be attracted to them. So, these push and pull factors made identification all but unavoidable. Maybe we should be puritans or maybe we should be completely open. I have my opinions on which, but, whichever it is, it isn’t cool to compel folks to abide by two, mutually contradictory, sets of requirements.

  • @garypeyrot

@somexp12, I'm not sure how you got to the place of having puritanicalism or complete sexual license as the only two options. In my admittedly Christian walk, I'm continually confronted with ways that my natural bent opposes what God says is best for me and for guiding my interractions with those around me. I agree with the woman in the video that we all have a longing for an eternal relationship with our loving creator. It is through that relationship that I see myself most clearly. I hope that everyone, including you, can know the joy of being intimately connected to the lover of our souls who knows us best and still chooses to love us.

  • @somexp12

    @somexp12

    6 ай бұрын

@ing-mariekoppel1637 No, I don't think the sexual revolution is what made people want their spouses to be attracted. You're misreading it if that is your interpretation. What I mean is that, to the extent that homosexuality as an "identity" was socially constructed, this was done originally *from without.* The woman in this video uses a lot of language that could imply she socially constructed herself into being gay. She uses that word, "identify," a lot. Maybe lesbians or bisexuals have this power (more likely the reality is just more vague for them), but gay men do not. Homosexuals didn't will themselves into existence. They were already always there. For a long time, however, most of them simply did what everyone else around them did. Because, what else would they do? It was the *outside world* that first defined them as a distinct type of person, and gay activism first came about as a response to the resultant witch-hunt. So, gay people didn't get that way by choosing to identify, as she implies. They already had something different about them, and it was outsiders who identified them, inventing lurid stories about them, and this forced them to take control of this imposed identity.

  • @subjecttochrist

2:09 - "Don't get side tracked with how people are identifying themselves??" But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler-not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.” 1 Corinthians 5: 11 -13. --------- how are we to interpret this woman's words/deeds in light of scripture? She advocates not being concerned with how somebody "identifies" themselves, while at the same time identifying as a LESBIAN as WHO SHE IS, versus A CHRIST FOLLOWER. She claims to be a sister, in Christ, yet lives in sexual immorality? the Word is clear, folks: DO NOT BE DECIEVED.

Well said. I think many modern churches try to sell "heaven on earth", as in "get saved and keep your sin", but in reality are forfeiting everlasting life... As the Apostle Paul wrote to the Philipians 3:8,10-,11 "Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead." Whatever our identity, or pet sin is, we should lose it and cout it as dung, for the intimate relationship with Jesus Christ and eternal life with Him.

While I know the sin needs to be addressed, what I took from this was there should be an approach that sin in general has tarnished and warped the views of the world as a whole and we need to give Jesus ALL of us, not just one part. Most people focus on one aspect of sin in their life neglecting the plethora of other sins that will eternally separate them from God but we have to give God ALL of our heart. If we did the exact things done in the old testament of the Bible, we would be a lot less loving and forgiving. The new testament is to guide our daily steps.

Society needs to look at the amendments. I don't want my rights to be taken away from serving my God to bowing down to mankind. But that doesn't give me the right to treat people any kind of way. Love, kindness, acceptance and respect is the key. When our paths cross why can't we accept that we don't agree with each other, not force to agree and not exalt ourselves over each other and live in peace. In the words of Meagan Good, "You do you and I do me."

The Christian faith, in its essence, is simply friendship with God. So many get lost with rules of do's and don'ts. Now, that said, someone who knows and loves the Lord will 'hunger and thirst' for righteousness. Their chief goal, their only goal, is to please God, in every way, by following what is written in the Word of God. My question for fellow Christians is, how do you know that you are saved? Is because you have 'evidence' of your salvation (you, being the judge?) or is it because you know God personally? For example, are you filled with the Holy Spirit (tongues being optional)? Do you have the 'down payment' of the Holy Spirit, your ONLY assurance of salvation (Eph. 1.14)? Are you seated in the heavenlies with Christ (Eph 2.6)? It is difficult to be seated in the heavenlies - and not know it! How could you meet God and say, "I think I know God"? For example, Jesus said, "Whoever believes in me will have rivers of living water..." The contrapositive of that is, if you do not have rivers of living water, you do not know Jesus! Do you have rivers of living water? If not, Jesus said, "Ask, and you shall receive." Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

Homosexual behavior won’t damn a person any more quickly than pride or greed or adultery. Without Christ, we are lost, whether gay, straight, or asexual. But, when we surrender our lives to the lordship of Jesus, He gives us a new nature (2 Corinthians 5:17). He destroys the power that sin once held over us (Romans 6:1-7). The old nature that once dictated our actions has been conquered in a born-again child of God (John 3:3). Temptation still rages. Weaknesses still torment. But the power of the Holy Spirit helps us to resist Satan and overcome the sins that once held us captive (Colossians 2:14; James 4:7). We can choose new life in Jesus or the old life of sin. But we cannot have both (Matthew 6:24).

I do mostly agree with this, but I say mostly because there's something missing, haha. Growing up, how you present things is exactly how I saw things. It still is. BUT these days, the LGBT community has developed an ideology which they push on *everyone*. People who are gay or trans often don't just use these words to describe their attractions or feelings, but as a core part of their identity that should never be challenged. When you add in that their ideology is being pushed even on kindergarteners, and Christians smeared in the media constantly for saying something against it, even to the point of losing their jobs and such.... the issue ends up getting a laser-focus that we don't apply to most other sins, as well as a 'popular view' of what Christians think which isn't necessarily accurate, and I think that skews people's perception of the issue. It's true that the biggest thing is whether we believe that Jesus saved us. Absolutely. But when a person is gay or trans, it's also a big deal - we're not supposed to just ignore a sin cos it's not the biggest sin, and in an environment where that one sin becomes the core of a person's identity and is seen as something to be celebrated and never questioned or criticized, it can become an idol - and how do you replace an idol with God without addressing the fact of the idol's existence?

  • @aerialpunk

    @aerialpunk

    5 жыл бұрын

@@usernotfound5956 It's a big deal to me cos they MAKE it a big deal. I never used to care much about it, but you can't escape it now, it's everywhere, being shoved down our throats from so many sources that you can't avoid it. And I think you didn't read what I said properly. I didn't say being gay is an ideology, and it isnt. But certainly, the ideas that homosexuality is always inborn and immutable, that it's morally neutral, that we should all wear rainbows and parade around proclaiming how great it is in the streets, or that we should teach kids that it's normal ALL ARE BELIEFS PART OF AN IDEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK. Once that's in our faces ALL THE TIME. I also love how somehow it all comes back to not bullying gay kids. Growing up, the gay kids I knew didn't get bullied anymore than anyone else did. Statistically, you're a lot more likely to get bullied for your appearance, social status, or financial position than your sexuality. And what makes you think the only way to not bully someone is to teach everyone to AGREE with them? What a crazy idea that is. It's much better to teach kids to treat others with common decency no matter what they think of the other kid. Which spills over into who is really being mistreated here. Is it gay people who are having their businesses closed down, being told they can't be public figures, being kicked out of their jobs, having their institutions vandalized and threatened, being told they shouldn't be able to teach their kids their belief systems.... no, no that would be reserved for Christians, not gay people. I mean, look at the case of Israel Folau, who is being threatened with being kicked out of professional sports cos he posted a Bible verse listing a whole group of people, including gay people, who will be judged as sinners by God, while other players who beat their spouses and kicked their pregnant wives in the stomachs got off with a relative slap on the wrist professionally. Yes, apparently, saying gay people are sinners is even more professionally & socially suicidal than actual wife-beating. Lastly, have you ever read the Bible beyond that one verse? We're all sinners, yes, and I know I'm one too. But that doesn't mean we have an excuse to continue sinning or to support others in their sinful nature. Nobody looks at an adulterer and says, "Hey, you were just born with a wandering eye, so you do you! Go out and sleep with whoever you want, and if your wife hates it, well she's just a bigot for not supporting your needs & identity!" *eyeroll* Nobody says that, and we're not supposed to. Jesus died to save us from sin, and *often* told people to *stop sinning*, as did his disciples. OFTEN. Cos the point of it all is that *sin is bad*. What makes you think gay people should get special treatment in their sin, when other sinners don't?

My biggest problem was when she said that 'Being an unbeliever was my greatest sin'. Okay. time to unpack. Being an unbeliever ISN'T a sin. Sin are the things you do in your life that lead you astray in your relationship with God. An unbeliever by their very definition doesn't HAVE a relationship with God and thus can not wander astray in their walk with Him. Also... This to me... Sounds judgy. Like 'look at all you ubelievers, you're all sinners.' Okay, yes. Technically. But so you. So are we all. This word-for-word the EXACT doubter's defence I've heard in so much outreach. Unbelievers all say "Why should I follow your cruel God? He judges me. He condems me. His followers say 'you there unbeliever are committing sin with your very existince as an unbeliever." And then you have to work past all that missconception and such before you can even have your FIST conversation about the beauty and LOVE of Jesus. So when I here stuff like this it actually really gets me going. Second. I don't really believe that there are these 'BIG sins' and 'small sins' to God. If we repent, and accept Jesus, he forgives them all the same, so to say 'my biggest sin wasn't being a lesbian, it was being an unbeliever' is... Idk Kind of cop out for not addressing a... WILLFULL act you are commiting againt God's wishes b/c 'Look! A BIGGER sin!'. As someone with ADHD, this feels an AWFUL lot like the procrastination people with my condition tend to struggle with so often. And need to guard against. My question for her would be, 'fine. At which in yoru walk with the Lord, would you like to address THIS particular sin?'

I'd certainly need more information before I could make my left little finger purge the energy within it to press that shift button......and not to take the proverbial piss out of the term instead, of course, using all of my little evolved fingers. When God created marriage, He designed it to between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24). To hijack God's design and modify it to our own liking, no longer makes it God's design... When a car manufacturer has an idea, he creates a blueprint that is used to create a prototype... And the prototype is the first of its kind and it sets apart the very thing that is going to be created later. So let's say an individual later guts out the inside of that car, puts switches on it, changes the engine, repaints the car, etc.. It is no longer the original design and Ford, Toyota (whoever is the car manufacturer), can no longer put that car on display. It is now false advertisement of their car. And God did the same with marriage, He created a prototype of marriage with Adam and Eve. Let us follow the Creator's original design.
