    Firstly thanks for explaining the meaning of turbo stall PROPERLY! Not even turbo manufacturers themselves manage to get this one right - talking nonsense about compressors stopping and spinning backwards.I'd like to add a couple of very important points about compressor surge:Compressor surge is caused by two very distinct situations. And the situations have two very distinct outcomes: One cause you could call "lift-off" or "closed-throttle" surge. Caused by closing the throttle plate, eg. between gearshifts. The other type of compressor surge is "open-throttle" surge. This is happens when the throttle is open and the turbine is being powered by the exhaust gasses. It is cause by a turbocharger that flows more compressed air than the engine can digest. Open-throttle surge will DEFINITELY destroy a turbo (I can confirm because I've done it!). However, a BOV will NOT stop this; on open-throttle surge the throttle is open and the inlet manifold is pressurised, therefore the BOV remains closed. The only way to stop this is either to choose a more suitably sized turbo, or to tune your boost control so the turbo produces less boost at the point where it surges.Lift-off surge, on the other hand, is much less damaging - possibly to the point of being negligible. Exhaust flow is low so there is very little force acting on the turbine.I've built and also tuned a fair number of turbocharged engines of various outputs over the years. I've also rebuilt a number of turbochargers. I've never once experienced one die from not having a bov. Oil starvation, oil contamination, foreign object damage, over-speeding (quite often when a BOV hose, Tee'd to the wastegate hose, splits) yes - lots. But not having a BOV? Never.Personally, I feel that the negatives of running a BOV (expense, added complexity, more potential points of failure) outweigh the possible positives. So I never run BOV on any of my engines - and never will. [Sorry about the big block of text. for some reason KZread keeps deleting my paragraph spacing]

    Yep, have that OTS on my 15 WRX but mainly when getting on the boost on longer gears and lower rpm's. Having a electronic boost control valve installed along w/ a proper dyno tuning.

    +Kj16V Hey thanks for that explanation. I wanted to ask you, how big of a turbo do you need to be able to get that "lift-off' surge sound? Because my car has stock turbos (Z32 300zx TT) and I don't get that sound.

    Any turbo will do. I have a small KO3 turbo on my Focus ST, and mine makes that noise as well. If one were to create that noise, they would have to pull the vacuum off the BOV (and go by internal spring pressure limits)...or install a bov block off plate.

    So. I did not have any turbo flutter before doing this. I got a catless down pipe for my 04 wrx that's the only thing done to it, the rest of the car is bone stock. And it seems to do the turbo flutter on acceleration, considering most say that's not good I'm just wondering what could cause it to do this after a down pipe swap? Or something else I should check?

    Wow it took me almost a whole year to finally come across a great explanation, after watching the Subi from Prodrive racing in the Isle of Man competition. I liked the sound that the car made and I thought it was some high tec BOV or waste gate on the engine, when in fact it's just compressor surge. Thank you Kyle.

    Alright, heres my one and only statement, this is how it is, no if, and, or buts. The compressor wheel doesn't spin backwards either - Turbo Flutter is when Air goes back out the cold side while exhaust side is still working. The noise is created because when you slap the throttle shut, the turbine is still spinning extremely fast and it chops the high pressure air on its way out. Also for further understanding. There's a difference in turbo flutter and compressor surge. Turbo flutter is is the release of pressure after slapping the throttle shut. -Compressor surge is when your turbo is set to create so much air, that your engine cant take it all. So while your exhaust side is working its ass off to spin the wheel, theres no room on the cold side to take in all the air through the valves so that air just goes back through the turbo slowing it down while its trying to speed up. Moral of the story. Turbo flutter is not bad, compressor surge is 👍 plus turbo flutter sounds sexy Like this comment so everyone can see

    like thatcarguy said, there's no difference. flutter and surge refer to the same phenomenon, which is air going back out through your turbo. They are both bad for your turbo, just fyi.

    I thought turbo flutter was when you don't run a bov there for forcing the air back in the turbo and trying to slow it down and compressor surge was when the turbo is over boosting. At least that's what I watched a shop talk about. Turbo surge and turbo flutter are not the same.

    I know this was a while ago but I just got the turbo flutter noise after I installed a BOV instead of the stock BPV. I've heard that if I have the correct spring in it it won't do it but would that mean my current spring is too soft or too stiff?

    show us a map that has the surge line plotted. :-) In the diesel engine (no throttle plate) lab while matching turbo to a rating we often could hear a BANG and the flexible lab airlines TO the compressor would shake violently. The dyno auto control would then unload the engine and allow the engine to recover and it would then go boom again once the compressor had enough energy to spin up to the surge line. Fun days from the past. The cutaway makes a nice credenza fiddle piece of iron. The cutaway looks a lot bigger then what you were using. It looks like one from a 500 hp diesel truck engine.     +MIGuy Well, I was planning on doing another video at a different time on how to read compressor maps (it's already on the request list), figured I'd keep this one short and sweet to show the basics of turbo flutter =).     nice explanation...... if u have a blow of valve u'll end up with a hissing note as the pressurized air is vented of the turbo.....correct me if I'm wrong

    The phenomenon of surge depends a lot on what the compressor is connected to. It is a fast oscillation of flow and pressure that depends on the size and arrangement of the pipes connected to it. On a test stand, a large turbocharger entering hard surge at high steady speed and pressure ratio may sound like a gun shot, it can be incredibly loud and violent. I think on an engine with pulsating flow the effects are much less concentrated. The overall concept of aerodynamic compressors is the flow rate has to be matched to the shaft speed, within a certain allowable range. When the speed is too high and the flow is too small then flow is too small for the blades and it will stop compressing. When the flow is too large for the compressor this may cause too high shaft speed and and fail the bearings rotordynamically.

    so i have 1.9 jtd 16v, and sometimes if i step on it on 3rd and at 1500rpm and i released gas but a little bit only, i can hear dudududu clearly, but it needs low rpm and not to release gas pedal fully, so what can i do for doing my jtd dudududu every time and every conditions? has it some type of hidden blowoff from factory or how can i do it? thank you

    It's all about how strong your Thrust Bearing is. Stronger ones on the bigger Turbo's you find in Supra and Evo builds can handle the surge no problem. Weaker ones that you'll find on basic K03's, K04's etc etc will definitely not last when you block off or remove the BOV. I'd give it 6 months before that turbo fails and completely wrecks the bearing, which then causes the compressor wheels to run into the wall of the turbo.. Installing a decent 360 Degree Thrust bearing should help to alleviate this possible issue. But personally, buying a turbo made to handle such excess surge would just be a better way forward.

    so on my focus 1.6tdci I am getting the sound every time I release the accelerator and lack of boost !! no blow off valve fitted and 6 mechanics have looked at it and scratched their heads as to what it is. so my question is what is most likely to cause it ? a blocked pipe ? a blocked dpf ? a split pipe ? and if any which are most likely to be the ones ? "apparently" they have all checked the air intake valves but nothing noticeable found, any help here would be appreciated as handing it back to a mechanic and telling him the solution would be a day in life I would never forget, lol

    So quick question, my car has a bypass valve as of now, there’s a hose which goes into the intake? If I blocked those off would that cause the flutter? And if so could it be harmful?

    Yes it will flutter, and no it isnt harmful. Be sure you're blocking the right one. You have a bypass valve on the intake side and generally a waste gate on the exhaust side. Do not block your waste gate hose. Be sure it's the intake side. The hose from the BOV/bypass valve that leads to the intake manifold is the one you want. To test it, take it off, block both ends and give it a rev. It will flutter immediately if it's the correct one.

    Can you explain how exhaust has any affect on it? I had a 90mm stainless aftermarket exhaust with 1 set of catalytic converters, and just upgraded to a 102mm full Titanium without Cats. I had Compressor surge with the 90mm exhaust. Now I have absolutely none with the 102mm. I obviously hear the turbos more which is nice. But just confused how a larger outlet and more flow would eliminate the compressor side noise.

    With the smaller exhaust and catalytic converter’s, you were creating way too much back pressure and for a turbo charged engine you want to get the exhaust out as fast as possible, and as smoothly as possible since you upgraded to a larger piping and got rid of the cats, the flow has now created no strain on the turbo so it doesn’t have to work to push the air out of the cat

    That’s also why, when you free up a turbo charged vehicles exhaust system, you gain a lot more power than just regular normally aspirated vehicle It allows the turbo charger to work like it supposed to with no restrictions as long as the intake isn’t restricted and you have a blow off valve that is set up properly if you have a blow off valve that has a harshness setting in the spring insert to the harshest setting meaning it’ll only go off at maximum vacuum, you will get compressor surge because you are blocking the only route for it to escape. No that’s not what you asked but yeah.

    One thing I do noticed about turbo flutter sound is when I switch from a big ball bearing turbo to a small journal bearing one, the flutter gets a lot less noticeable, I guess it's the journal bearing turbo with more friction and less rotating mass to make it spool down faster, thus reduce pressure build up when throttle is let off.

    People think that sound is coming from their BOV which is what is causing all the confusion. I get this same sound with my V3 vortech Supercharger when just cruising at partial throttle opening. It’s not the BOV. It’s the Supercharger it’s self. Clears up a lot. Not much you can do to prevent this other than lowering your boost overall.

    That's not good. You shouldnt be having that sound under load, only when letting off. That means your supercharger is generating more air than your engine can make use of, so you're right in saying you should lower the boost. If you get this sound when you lift your foot off, its fine.

    If it happens while you're accelerating, yes. it means the turbo is either too big or generating more boost than the engine can physically make use of. If its only happening when you lift your foot off the throttle, it's completely fine.

    please make a video about wastegates and what happens if you block them. no one i know of has explained that. is it better to block them? simpler and faster spool. using only the bov to regulate pressure?

    If you block it the turbo will overspin and destroy itself, releasing the pressure with a blow off valve isn't going to stop that.

    Well then. Why do people want to disable the BOV? Just because it sounds awesome? Are there any advantages compared to having a BOV? I'm talking about compressor flutter btw.

    Because it sounds awesome. that's it. You lose the tiniest amount of boost and that's all. When you lift your foot the air pressure slows the turbo down faster than a bov venting does. But the difference is usually negligible imo

    When I say slows down the turbo, I dont mean it forces it to nearly stop or anything ridiculous. It will just slow down at a faster rate than having a bov. Turbos are designed to spin at 100,000rpm give or take, so having backpressure is very unlikely to cause it any harm

    Yes, you can make any turbo flutter. But the sound will vary depending on the size of the turbo, the volume of your intercooler and piping, and the boost you're running.

    you forgot filter type, box filters muffle the 'flutter' sound while cone shapes like K&N filters will increase flutter noise. Aircraft mechanic here, compressor surge in any turbo or turbine is when the impellers lose lift and air pressure can escape back through the pressure differential UNDER POWER. If you actually close throttle body (OFF POWER) you'll no longer have exhaust spool allowing the air to escape much easier back through turbo which is NO LONGER FIGHTING IT. Turbos that do generate stall under boost ON POWER will trick the afm and ecu fuel distribution at the same time causing misfires and potential catastrophic damage. However turbos immediately OFF POWER cannot 'surge' as there no new air being introduced to hot or cold side under load making the air travel backwards swiftfully like me letting go of an untied balloon

    Surge/stall is the same whether you're pressing the gas pedal or letting off. It's the pressure on the outlet of the compressor being too great in relation to the flow rate. _"turbos immediately OFF POWER cannot 'surge' as there no new air being introduced"_ A turbo doesn't just stop spinning the instant you take your foot off the gas. The turbine/shaft/compressor all have inertia.

    @@derschwarzgeist because theres no new air, the internal impeller cant create interal lift stall conditions (like when a plane climbs too quick and stalls losing altitude). This is surge on throttle, i know what youre saying but this is not that

    @@jellybaby7 Or, if it's the exact same valve, the smaller turbo was creating enough pressure to cause stall but not enough to actuate the spring in the valve.

    Some sources mention "wastegate chatter/flutter" which is supposed to sound similar. Does it exists or is it just a forum myth?

    +Martin Cerman Wastegate chatter is a real thing, however generally forums have it wrong and use the term interchangeably with compressor surge. The "tsu tsu tsu" sound is not wastgate chatter, wastegate chatter itself can occur from the exhaust pulses moving the wastegate on and off its seat at low wastegate openings, or from the boost controller opening and shutting the wastegate rapidly to control boost (this only happens on some setups). This noise will be more apparent with an external wastegate as the exhaust pulses from the wastegate opening and closing will be loud. This will only happen under reasonably high throttle inputs though, not when you shut the throttle as compressor surge does. Thanks for watching!

    +Martin Cerman I always thought it was wastegate chatter as well ... I see carl said in his reply that , it only happens on some setups. So i'm guessing the Group B Audi's setup was some how different to the Ford RS200's or the Peugot 205T16's ... As the Quattro's chatter is very distinctive ?

    +KYLE.DRIVES If the waste gate spring were setup low, and the boost setup relatively high (say, using an e-boost controller), couldn't you get a wastegate chatter on throttle lift of as well? The turbo would rapidly spin down also causing impeller at the exhaust end to build up pressure against the still rapidly exiting exhaust gasses? Since waste gate's physically open outwards wouldn't this cause sufficient build up of pressure to force it open?

    +chilljlt Nope, as soon as you lift the throttle the airflow through the engine drops and less fuel is injected, so your exhaust velocity drops significantly, reducing the pressure at the turbine massively (think of this as the mechanism by which the turbo spools down when you let off the throttle). The drop in airflow is going to occur at a much faster rate than the turbo will spool down, so there wont be pressure to force the wastegate outwards. Does that make sense?

    +KYLE.DRIVES Absolutely. That came from no real world experience. Though, I'd noticed a turbo wastegate open and close ever so slightly, yet visibly on a vehicle setup with Eboost controller and low spring value (for the ability to control boost over a wide range) on throttle lift off on a dyno . What could be the reason for this? This was , i'm told , corrected by installing a BOV. That aside. I absolutely enjoy your videos! Especially since you don't dilute the fundamental idea in an effort to make it approachable. I find that to be the case with most auto channels

    Takumi Fujiwara a BOV is useless with a compressor surge, since the surge happens at open throttle and the BOV open at closed throttle

    Both are compressor surge. One is when you come off the throttle, the other is while on throttle. The one on throttle is bad, the one off throttle is good.

    @@tripplefives1402 no. Open throttle surge is bad. Closed throttle surge is not bad. Also, turbo hoses are designed for considerably more pressure than most turbos make. The soft hoses can jump off the hard ones, if they're loose. Tighten your hose clamps and it'll be fine.

    That is a Rotrex Supercharger (Centrifugal) actually. Ask me how i know. It is belt driven, not driven by electric motor.

    It's basically caused when the excess pressure can't escape, so it goes back into the turbo and slowly it down faster than normal, shortening it's life. If you have a proper BoV, then it won't flutter.

    +Andrew Luebker im planning on a low boost build (1.3 sohc carby engine, yes i know the storys with turbos and carbs) but if im running say 4psi should i worry about a BOV? or is it wasted money. id still have to lower the pressure it opens at.

    A bug would be awesome to turbo charge, thank you for the advice. On another note, do you know if they had to mod the carb much and what boost they run? Im charging a b3 engine out of a 94 mazda 323. I know i need to raise fuel pressure 1psi per pound of boost and theni can equalise float bowl pressure simply with a piece of hose (seen it done on here) and at 4 psi i shouldnt need to swap out floats should i?

    TDI doesn't have blow-off valves. My girlfriend's 318D makes flutter when lift the gas off above 2500 rpm.
