What Can You Learn About a Person Without Seeing Them? | Reverse Assumptions

Ойын-сауық

It’s certainly easier to make assumptions about people than it is to spend time getting to know someone. We wanted to put assumptions to the test to see what we're missing out on because we're so busy assuming we already "know" a person. Join us as we discover why you should never judge a book by it’s cover in our series, Reverse Assumptions.
We are all conditioned with certain biases. In this experiment, we challenged these biases by asking people to make assumptions about their partner's appearance without ever actually seeing their partner. When they flipped around to finally face each other, they were shocked by how wrong they were.
Now it's YOUR turn. What do people assume about you?

People who see my photo assume i am much younger than i really am, people who actually meet me and talk to me, assume i am much older than i am. Other then that the main assumption people make is that i am a feminist. Oh and no one ever seems to guess that i come from poverty and homelessness, there is some assumption that i have never gone without, and couldn't possibly understand true struggle. I generally try my best not to make assumptions about anyone or their experience as so many people are wrong about me. When i talk to someone i keep in mind they might be a brain surgeon for nasa, or they might wrestle alligators for a living. Who knows! All i know is everyone has a story.

People assume my name is a guy’s name (it’s not,) and more recently, because I started wearing hijab, that I wasn’t born in the US and don’t speak English. I was born in Lebanon and immigrated here when I was two, and have always excelled in the advanced English classes I took. Whoopsie! I get a lot of dirty looks on the train before I open my mouth. My mom and I look nothing alike, so before I wore hijab, people assumed that we weren’t together whenever we waited in checkout lines. Now that we both wear hijab, it’s automatically assumed. People assume my hijab isn’t my choice, but it is. I was even taken aside by my teachers and asked if I was “okay” and shot looks of concern. It was annoying, and a little condescending. It’s enough that I had to argue with my Lebanese grandmother for two hours about my decision to wear the hijab. She told me I was too “young” to wear it and criticized my ability to make a decision that would last (ideally) for the rest of my life. Which is IMO a radical opinion that is held by a ton of Americans, as we love to judge women for how much they do or not cover up! Not including me, I respect women, no matter how much skin they do or don’t show.

She is from Liberia so she IS NOT AFRICAN AMERICAN! She is simply African. For instance, I am from Somalia and I never identify as AFRICAN AMERICAN. There is a difference. African Americans are people who descended from former slaved and lived the in the United States for couple of centuries. Recent immigrant are not part of that subgroup.

People usually assume I'm full white. I totally understand though. My voice, my colored eyes, my super light skin complexion, my light colored hair, and my last name make me seem fully white (I'd say). But I'm half Mexican and I speak perfect Spanish lol. I'm in contact with my Mexican family more than my American family and people just get extremely thrown off. I guess they imagine I'd be short, darker, brown hair, brown eyes, and a heavy Spanish accent if I were actually born in Mexico. But nope. I used to work at Whataburger and I live SUPER close to the border of Mexico and Texas so the majority of the population here is like 95% Latino and when people came to Whataburger, most of the time people would ask to speak to someone else WITHOUT even trying to talk to me because they assumed I only spoke English. Others tried to speak in English, but struggled so much. That last situation was hard because I speak perfect Spanish and when I'd try to help them out by speaking Spanish so it'd be easier for them, very few would get mad and ask me, "Was I speaking Spanish?" and I totally get why'd they get offended, I just thought I'd help them struggle less, but I just went with the flow lol.

  • @crystalthompson9828

I totally understand what you mean, but I was simply classifying myself as white AND Mexican. I wasn't trying to be specific with race and ethnicity. If I wanted to pull out the race, I'd say I'm white because, as you stated, Mexican isn't a race, it's more of an ethnicity really and I'm already half white so, for me, it's a lot easier to just put "white" on documents I have to fill out for whatever reasons. And I'd have to disagree with you on the Native American part. Native Americans are more for the indigenous people who were in the Americas for a long time. Like I said, half of my family is from Mexico and none of them born in the U.S. (at least none before my generation). I think the correct term would be Native Mexican for that specific part. And if it came to more or less, I think I'm pretty much split down the middle if we're talking about just specifically "white ancestry." My family is completely divided and I didn't grow up with my father's family, so I'm way closer to my Mexican family. But if it comes to what I have most of, I'd say I'm split 50/50 without going into specifics.

Zhane Doe Mexicans generally dont look white. But either way, when people say latino is a race (yes anyone can be born in a spanish speaking country like anyone can be born in russia), they are referring to mestizos. A typical latino that has spanish and native/indigenous ancestry. So, yes, latino really is a race. At least south americans. They are a combination race of native americans and spaniards. “Afro-latinos” or black latinos typically consist of native, african and spanish ancestry, sometimes just African and spanish. The percentages will vary, as it will with anyone. So, the latino race= mestizos.

L.P.M X African-Americans are the descendants of those enslaved in America. That's why people don't specify, they don't know where exactly they are from. It's another ethnicity like Jamaican, Dominican, Nigerian, etc. Imagine calling someone from Egypt Jamaican. That's ultimately what you're doing by calling a Liberian an African-American. It's an ethnicity, not a replacement for any person who is Black/African :).
