Do you want to talk about dumb food-based Linguistics that will definitely cause an argument, then attempt to define various things as sandwiches. For example, is a hotdog a sandwich? If not then what differentiates it from a hoagie which many do considered to be a sandwich? One of my favorite examples is my culinary textbook lists Pizza as an "open-faced sandwich", which I guess is technically correct, and it causes no end of arguments. People get irrationally passionate about this topic for some reason

Technically hot dogs and hamburgers are sandwiches. But if you offer me a sandwich, I will not be expecting a hot dog or a hamburger. And if you offer me a hot dog or a hamburger, I will expect it to be in sandwich form, so calling it a sandwich is redundant and a waste of time. What gets me is the people that call everything a burger. Not every hot sandwich is a burger.

Fun fact: Hungarian doesn't have a word equivalent to "nut". On food labels, the warning "contains nuts" is translated with the word "dióféle", which means something like "walnut-type". "dió" alone means walnut and is found in many of the things that English calls nuts (e.g. kókuszdió=coconut, kesudió=cashew nut). But the two most important ones are exceptions from this: hazelnut is "mogyoró" and peanut is "földimogyoró" (or confusingly also "mogyoró").

Not only is a tomato botanically a fruit, it is a berry (and strawberries and raspberries are not)! I seem to recalls that some of these distinctions depend on which part of the original flower ends up forming the "shell" of the "nut", or the flesh that surrounds it. For instance, the flesh of apples forms as a swelling of the stem of the flower, rather than from any part of the flower itself.

I knew peanuts were legumes before The Internet existed. Just recently a friend of mine from Myanmar said her boss said she was nuts and asked me if that was rude or not. I then went on to tell her all the slang meanings of "nut" and "nuts". The English language does seem to be obsessed with this word. In Thailand fruit vendors sell grape tomatoes alongside other fruits for people to buy and snack on as you would strawberries or grapes. There's also a fruit closely related to tomatoes called "cape gooseberries" which grow in a paper-thin shell and are yellow-orange in colour. They have a combined sweet and tart flavour and are amazing. I've also seen Americans refer to them as "ground nuts".

I actually remember there being a famous court case about whether or not tomatoes are fruits. IIRC, growers wanted to have tomatoes legally branded as fruits for tax purposes, since taxes on fruits production were generally lower than those on vegetable production. They took it to court, citing the botanical definition of fruit. The court acknowledged the fact that tomatoes do meet this botanical definition, but ultimately ruled that, because tomatoes are used as vegetables in the culinary arts, they should be taxed as vegetables instead.

What drives me nuts when it comes to peanuts is having to mention them to the person behind the counter in a sandwhich shop why they have to hold the mustard...or even having to use a clean knife when cutting the bread. See, I'm allergic to just about all tree nuts *and* peanuts. The mustard seed is a part of the peanut family, which is why there is the allergy connection - and also why I'll often get a blank stare from that same person behind the counter, because the only people who really know that are people who have such an allergy or their close friends and family. (Mind you, that doesn't stop people - including members of one's own family - to not believe you.)

Botanically speaking cucumbers, bell peppers, aubergines and courgettes are also fruits but somehow this fruit-veg debate only ever comes up with tomatoes. Also the term vegetable doesn't exist in botany at all.

just so anyone curious knows, you are more likely to be allergic to actual nuts if you are allergic to peanuts because your immune system does not care about taxonomy or botanical lineages. So don't try to use this to trick people with allergies into eating things (this has happened to me. Please don't do this)

Also, by the logic of "science is always right about names", we shouldn't be calling flies and beetles "bugs". While the term "bug" is commonly used to refer to any insect (particularly in the United States), the term is used in science exclusively to refer to insects belonging to the order Hemiptera. I don't know about you, but I'd rather just use words, have people understand my words and use words I understand in turn, and be done with it.

Okay, but to say “a tomato is a fruit, NOT a vegetable” isn’t quite right either. Vegetable is a strictly culinary term, and has no botanical definition.

Too bad NameExplain talks exclusively about english words. What if the word for "nut" came from a word that originally referred to "peanut" or "walnut", would saying that "peanuts aren't really nuts" or "walnuts aren't really nuts" even make sense in that scenario!? And in some languages the male reproductive organs are "eggs" rather than "nuts". Who came up with that!?

Hate when people talk about the tomato fruit thing as if it's some sort of strange unusual sort of freak of vocabulary when in reality literally 99% of all vegetables are fruits. Literally any type of seed bearing fleshy object that comes from a flower is a fruit
