I was actually surprised a few months ago when I found out that a friend didn't know that peanuts were legumes. He was frustrated at the price difference between peanuts and cashews and I pointed out that you get more per acre with less labor since no trees are involved
Do you want to talk about dumb food-based Linguistics that will definitely cause an argument, then attempt to define various things as sandwiches. For example, is a hotdog a sandwich? If not then what differentiates it from a hoagie which many do considered to be a sandwich? One of my favorite examples is my culinary textbook lists Pizza as an "open-faced sandwich", which I guess is technically correct, and it causes no end of arguments. People get irrationally passionate about this topic for some reason

Technically hot dogs and hamburgers are sandwiches. But if you offer me a sandwich, I will not be expecting a hot dog or a hamburger. And if you offer me a hot dog or a hamburger, I will expect it to be in sandwich form, so calling it a sandwich is redundant and a waste of time. What gets me is the people that call everything a burger. Not every hot sandwich is a burger.
There also is a botanical nut, which is no culinary nut: Strawberries. The red flesh of the strawberry is just a in-between. The small dots on the outside are the real nuts of this accumulative nut.

One term that drives me nuts is "tree nut". Some tree nuts are more closely related to peanuts than to other tree nuts. I propose the term "fagal nut", which includes walnuts, acorns, and hazelnuts, but excludes peanuts, cashews, pistachios, coconuts, and macadamia nuts.
one of the roles of language/words is to communicate. The word "nut" conveys what people believe them to be. If I asked the grocer 'where are the peanuts' they will point me to the nuts section, not the vegetable/legume department.

Sometimes you feel like a nut. Sometimes you don't.
Fun fact: Hungarian doesn't have a word equivalent to "nut". On food labels, the warning "contains nuts" is translated with the word "dióféle", which means something like "walnut-type". "dió" alone means walnut and is found in many of the things that English calls nuts (e.g. kókuszdió=coconut, kesudió=cashew nut). But the two most important ones are exceptions from this: hazelnut is "mogyoró" and peanut is "földimogyoró" (or confusingly also "mogyoró").
Not only is a tomato botanically a fruit, it is a berry (and strawberries and raspberries are not)! I seem to recalls that some of these distinctions depend on which part of the original flower ends up forming the "shell" of the "nut", or the flesh that surrounds it. For instance, the flesh of apples forms as a swelling of the stem of the flower, rather than from any part of the flower itself.
I was thinking the fact that George Washington Carver never mashed peanuts for eating even though he did invent 300 other uses for the legume.

Patrick has gone nuts!
the cashew fruit is actually edible and very common used to make juices ice cream in Brazil! It's delicious but some people don't like because it causes a tingling feeling in the mouth
I knew peanuts were legumes before The Internet existed. Just recently a friend of mine from Myanmar said her boss said she was nuts and asked me if that was rude or not. I then went on to tell her all the slang meanings of "nut" and "nuts". The English language does seem to be obsessed with this word. In Thailand fruit vendors sell grape tomatoes alongside other fruits for people to buy and snack on as you would strawberries or grapes. There's also a fruit closely related to tomatoes called "cape gooseberries" which grow in a paper-thin shell and are yellow-orange in colour. They have a combined sweet and tart flavour and are amazing. I've also seen Americans refer to them as "ground nuts".
I actually remember there being a famous court case about whether or not tomatoes are fruits. IIRC, growers wanted to have tomatoes legally branded as fruits for tax purposes, since taxes on fruits production were generally lower than those on vegetable production. They took it to court, citing the botanical definition of fruit. The court acknowledged the fact that tomatoes do meet this botanical definition, but ultimately ruled that, because tomatoes are used as vegetables in the culinary arts, they should be taxed as vegetables instead.
Vegetable has no botanical meaning, only a culinary one. So tomatoes are both fruits and vegetables

Patrick said the word "nuts" in this video so many times, it drove me nuts.
"Nuts" is also an exclamation akin to "darn" "dang" or "dammit" as in "Ah, nuts." And a better way to call someone crazy without calling them crazy is, "out of [one's] bird", which I think is a variation of "out of [one's] tree".
"Nut" doesn't even sound like a real word anymore

What drives me nuts when it comes to peanuts is having to mention them to the person behind the counter in a sandwhich shop why they have to hold the mustard...or even having to use a clean knife when cutting the bread. See, I'm allergic to just about all tree nuts *and* peanuts. The mustard seed is a part of the peanut family, which is why there is the allergy connection - and also why I'll often get a blank stare from that same person behind the counter, because the only people who really know that are people who have such an allergy or their close friends and family. (Mind you, that doesn't stop people - including members of one's own family - to not believe you.)

Mustard is already a weird food. The only thing that makes it not poison is the amount of water/vinegar you add to it, and how long you let it sit.
Only because you mentioned acorns in this, that's actually one of my favorite etymologies: "corn" only means "a small thing". So calling it "acorn" is about as generic as a term as you give something other than "thingy".
When I see Madison Beer.
So, wait... if human nuts come in pairs, then they're not nuts by definition, right? Does this mean that we need to start saying "bust a legume?" On the other hand, in the tomato battle, chefs win hands down. I will never consider a tomato a fruit, but I will always think of it as a tasty and very useful vegetable.

An old Southern folk song about peanuts uses a more accurate name: Peas, peas, peas, peas, Eatin’ goober peas. Goodness how delicious, Eatin’ goober peas! Now you can do a Name Explain on “goober.” And why peanuts would be “goober peas” rather than another kind of peas.
My grandmother (born 1901) used a slang term for Brazil nuts that struck me as a little rough as a kid and TOTALLY doesn't fly these days. The older farts out there may know what I'm talking about, still hard to believe that shit was kosher.
Does that mean people with peanut allergies are more likely to be allergic to other legumes, and there is no increase in the chance of allergy to drupes or true nuts?

Beg to argue. The word "bugs" belongs to lay people to easily talk about any creepy crawly without having to go into specifics. If you wanted to be specific, you wouldn't say "bug", you would say spider, cockroach, beetle, etc. Science needs to stick to science and stay the hell out of language.
Coconts are also not nuts. Strawberries are not berries. Bananas are berries.
words have multiple meanings and multiple usages Am I not a father because I am also a son? Is it correct to say I'm not a son because I'm actually a father? Actually I'm both and a lot more. A tomato is a fruit and vegetable depending on how you're using the word at the time If you want to find peanuts at the store you had best go to the nut section they're not gonna be kept with the lentils And a cashew might be a fruit but you'd better look for it in the nut section not in your produce section
I have come to a comfortable decision: All fruits are vegetables, and not all vegetables are fruit.

I eat food. Not science experiments. I listen to the people who make the food eatable. That's right, I said EATABLE not edible. Edible just means it won't kill you/make you sick if you eat it, and is technically food. Eatable means something you may actually want to eat. Example: Gramma's overcooked pot roast is technically edible, but it's bland and chewy and not really eatable.
why don't we just call them drupes like they are supposed to be called? Who started calling them something else?
"Peekins"? Oh, England. Here in the US, we argue over pee-can vs p'cahn. But y'all say "sod it" and turn it into a verb.
"Vegetable" has no botanical definition, so it's not that tomatoes *aren't* veggies, because they are. They are both a vegetable and a fruit, there's no conflict between the two terms 🤷♀️😘

Botanically speaking cucumbers, bell peppers, aubergines and courgettes are also fruits but somehow this fruit-veg debate only ever comes up with tomatoes. Also the term vegetable doesn't exist in botany at all.

just so anyone curious knows, you are more likely to be allergic to actual nuts if you are allergic to peanuts because your immune system does not care about taxonomy or botanical lineages. So don't try to use this to trick people with allergies into eating things (this has happened to me. Please don't do this)
Also, by the logic of "science is always right about names", we shouldn't be calling flies and beetles "bugs". While the term "bug" is commonly used to refer to any insect (particularly in the United States), the term is used in science exclusively to refer to insects belonging to the order Hemiptera. I don't know about you, but I'd rather just use words, have people understand my words and use words I understand in turn, and be done with it.

What if the word for "nut" came from a word that originally referred to "peanut" or "walnut", would saying that "peanuts aren't really nuts" or "walnuts aren't really nuts" even make sense in that scenario!? And in some languages the male reproductive organs are "eggs" rather than "nuts". Who came up with that!?
Hate when people talk about the tomato fruit thing as if it's some sort of strange unusual sort of freak of vocabulary when in reality literally 99% of all vegetables are fruits. Literally any type of seed bearing fleshy object that comes from a flower is a fruit
