What Breaks a Fast and What Does NOT Break a Fast - The Official Video - Thomas DeLauer
So many people have asked the awesome questions about specific foods breaking a fast or not breaking a fast, so I figured, what the heck, why don't I just lay it out for you. I'm going to list out foods that are fasting-safe, or should I say drinks, and things that are fasting-safe. But, then I'm going to list out things that are no-gos, things that will definitely break a fast. I'm going to give you a little bit of the science, too. Then I'm going to talk about the gray area. What I mean by gray area is there are going to be things that may or may not break a fast. It's still undecided. The jury is still out. I'll give you my honest opinion on it, so you can take it for what it's worth.
But first off, let's go ahead and let's talk about a couple of things that are good to go while you're fasting. First and foremost, we know that good, old-fashioned H2O is good to go. Unless you're doing a dry fast, water is not going to cause a problem. You're good to go. Kind of an obvious one. The next one I want to talk about, green tea. Very powerful, that epigallocatechin-3-gallate, that EGCG, is really powerful. Allows your body to mobilize fats quite a bit better, so it's a very good thing to be drinking while you're fasting. Then, we've got coffee, of course. Coffee will not break a fast as long as it's black. Totally good to go. Again, the caffeine mobilizing fatty acids. You're good there. It's going to help expedite the process of fasting. It's going to help expedite glycogen removal, or should I say, storage, that the carbs and the glycogen and the glucose isn't in your bloodstream anymore. It goes into the muscles. We definitely want that, so that's powerful.
Here's a kind of a weird one. It's going to be most teas, black, green, or whatever, but I have to say this now, certain herbal teas with fruit. You see some herbal teas out there, the have little chunks of apple, they have little chunks of berries that are dehydrated. You're getting the fructose from those fruits, so I would highly recommend staying away from those. That's a no-go.
So then, back to the fasting-safe, now we've got different sodas that I want to talk about. Zevia, for one, I've talked about this in a video. That's a soda that's sweetened with Stevia, so you're good to go there. And, as much as I hate to say this, I'm going to go on the record by saying I don't think that aspartame is good. I don't think it's healthy, but a lot of people ask. Diet Coke, diet sodas, you're going to be okay. Aspartame doesn't technically break a fast. So, you're okay there. I just don't think it's the best thing to do, but I know that a lot of you are wondering that, so I'm going to go ahead and say it.
When we look at any kind of carbonated beverage, you're usually good to go, so I'm just going to say carbonated water, carbonated H2O, sparkling beverages, things like that. People also always ask about vaping, because there's oil, and you're ingesting the vape. Does vaping break a fast? Generally, no. You're not swallowing the oil, you're inhaling it. What I will say is that vape, the nicotine that is usually in vape, just like smoking, affects your electron transport chain. It affects NADH. That's why you get a high from it. That's why you get a buzz. The jury is still a little bit out on whether not not nicotine technically would constitute breaking a fast, but for the sake of the metabolic function of a fast, you're okay.
I'm going to leave this here for now. There might be one or two more that I add, but I want to start going over the things that will break a fast. I already talked about herbal teas that have fruit in them. Now, the big one, guys. MCT oil and powder. I love that stuff and it's great for keto, but it does break a fast. There's still eight calories per gram. Unlike most fats that are nine calories per gram, MCTs only have eight. It's a little bit different. They still are digested. They still elicit a metabolic response. It's still food. It's still calories. If you have a couple of tablespoons of MCT oil, you're still looking at a couple hundred calories. That's definitely not fasting, okay? So, MCT oil does. So does coconut oil. Same kind of thing. You've got to be careful there.

@ThomasDeLauer Since I am only few months short from turning 50years old replaying your videos to understand the awesome science and common sense info on your videos over a month has improved body/mind health, energy and body shape. That being said a couple of questions: since I learned from your videos that is after 16 hours that fasting give over the top life-changing results and, also from your videos, you explain that instead of eating soon post workout you find that eating a while longer after physical exercise is the best, I am starting to workout at night to break my fast around 11am the next day; am I okay in following these methods? and last, if I understood one of your videos correctly before eating lunch with a little carb in it, you recommend to have a little bit of fat without carb so that the body re-start turning fat into energy rather than storing it, is that right? and with the bone broth alone am I getting that fat to break my fast with and a hour later then have the meal with some carbs in it; correct? I hope you don't mind me squeezing in like 3 questions in one comment.

Thank you for including cannabis in this discussion! As the industry evolves, so does the science, esp. learning exactly what makes us feel the way we do. Terpenes are found in ALL plants, and they are specifically responsible for feelings of euphoria, energy, relaxation, hunger, etc., aaand specific ones have even been known to suppress appetite. As a post-bacc Neurobiology labrat whom joined the professional side of cannabis a few years ago, it really is amazing to finally see the science behind this force of a plant. Caution on edibles:. Our bodies breakdown and digest the endocannabinoids in MJ much more completely than smoking/vaping, and take much longer to kick in. Exercise restraint and moderation when consuming. Remember, you can always eat more, but you can't eat less. Also exercise caution when medicating with concentrates- oil, distillate, vape, wax, etc: these are 'concentrated' mediums of THC, producing a stronger effect. I personally recommend flower to start, seeing as how you get the full spectrum benefits of the plant rather than THC alone. I could go on, but by all means if anyone sees this and has questions, don't hesitate! =)

Ok a few questions, diet soda specifically diet coke doesn't effect insulin? Because I hear from Dr. Fung first soda can cause a insulin spike greater then sugar. Second the items in your ok list won't effect me achieving autophagy? Third is a friend started a water fast but with coconut water included and from anything I read coconut water has calories. So what do you think. Right now I do water fasts and if it's long fasts a week or more I do a dry fast during a water fast of a day. Thanks!

max hunter I agree. Now neuroscientist Tamas Horvath, of Yale University in New Haven, and colleagues report in Nature that nerve cells called pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons play a key role in this process. POMC had generally been thought to promote satiation, but Horvath's team found that POMC neurons in the brain release not just a hunger-suppressing hormone, but also one that promotes appetite. Which hormone is secreted is regulated by a protein in the cells' mitochondria, structures that regulate energy levels. When the CB1 receptor is activated, this mitochondrial protein induces POMC to switch from secreting the substance that suppresses gorging to one that supresses it. Both β-endorphin and α-MSH are in fact derived, via cleavage, from the same precursor protein-POMC, after which the neurons are named. For this reason, Horvath had suspected long ago that POMC neurons might both stimulate and suppress appetite. However, he dropped this early theory after an abundance of experimental evidence suggested otherwise. Indeed, even when β-endorphin itself is deleted from POMC neurons in mice, said Cone, you get “animals that are hyperphagic and obese.” I think an argument can be made that, as long as one can overcome the munchies, smoking marijuana should actual help fasting. If your body is saying it is hungry then wouldn't it consume what is available?

@ThomasDeLauer, when talking about the increase in insulin sensitivity that occurs with intermittent fasting, is that something that increases permanently, or is it only (or mostly) something to consider when breaking a fast? More specifically, should you avoid eating carbs+fats at the same time for good, or is it mainly something to avoid when breaking a fast?

Dietsoda's do increase insulin. A study was done in men harvesting sugar canes. Some got coke, some got dietcoke. Both groups harvested more sugar canes after the drink, but the latter group had a major crash and got less productive. The theory behind it is that the pancreas starts releasing insulin as soon as the sugary taste is noted. The insuline lowers the (low) present bloodsugar because the body is expecting a replenishment. When the expected sugar doesnt come in, bloodsugar has crashed which causes fatigue and cravings. You could say that this does not affect the fast as long as you withstand your cravings, but it does effect the way the body reacts. The increase in glucose causes an initial decrease in glucagon which is the hormone that helps mobilize fatty acids and glycogen. Afterwards, glucagon will spike due to the low blood sugar, but you end up feeling pretty bad in between. This being said; Isn't it better not to drink dietsoda's? And another question: I dont like coffee so i take caffeine in pillform. It has a gelatine capsule. Does 1 really break the fast? If i take the capsule at 12, when i break my fast, i wont be able to sleep.

Is there a way to consume "too much" stevia while fasting? I am from the south and sweet tea runs through my veins. I used to make a 1 gallon jug of sweet tea, with 1.25 cups of sugar in it. Needless to say it was quite sweet, but not like McDonalds sweet tea, sweet. I just made my first gallon of tea with stevia. using about 1.25 teaspoons for the whole gallon. Will drinking a few glasses of this in a night have any adverse effects? I also just bought (based on your videos) some Zevia organic tea. Am I safe to drink this while fasting? Should I only consume 1 can? or is 2 cans throughout the day ok? Thanks so much!

Black coffee doesn't raise insulin, it raises cortisol, so technically it doesn't break your fast. Cortisol and Insulin are the 2 hormones that store fat & prevent fat burning. That's why there's a lot of people who recommend water first thing in the morning and waiting for breakfast to have your coffee.

My favorite non-caffeinated tea is Celestial Seasonings Cinnamon Apple Spice. The ingredients are: Cinnamon, hibiscus, chamomile, natural cinnamon and apple flavors with other natural flavors, roasted chicory, orange peel and roasted carob. I bet this probably doesn't break a fast. But I wonder what the hormonal impact of the ingredients is. It would be interesting to watch a video on teas and flavored beverages and their effects. What dosage of tea would cause a material effect. Even green tea is suppose have a negative effect on test.

I started making a tea recipe for inflammation and many other health benefits to include in my OMAD (23:1) keto diet for my fasting period. Just 3 days into it (already getting frustrated with all the calculations involved, especially because I haven't quite figured out my intake numbers for protein calories & fat so I don't know if I'm doing this right so far). Tea calls for pineapple skin from a whole pineapple with just very little pineapple "meat" on the skin, arnica, chamomile, cinnamon, ginger, tumeric, cayenne pepper, & ACV. Will this break my fast?? Hey Thomas, love your videos although I did have a question about MCT oils and breaking a fast...although they are calories I've read that they do not spike your insulin, keep autophagy going and also increase ketones in the blood. So it seems like you keep all the benefits of IF while increasing your energy even more. Does this sound accurate? or is there a counter argument research study that you might give me the pleasure of learning about? Thanks for your time!

Interesting to see ACV in the gray area section. Even if there may be a single calorie in ACV, isn't there typically 5 calories in a single cup of black coffee? Which shouldn't be enough to impact a fast. Thomas, I'm wondering if you could make a video discussing the best time to drink ACV, in relation to controlling glucose. E.g. before or after a carb heavy meal? At the start or end of a fast?

I've been wondering about Vaping. I have Vaped for 9 years after smoking for 20. I love Vaping. It has literally saved my life.My asthma has disappeared and I get a pulmonary lung exam done by my doctor every year and she says I have the lungs of a non-smoker. I do get juice in my mouth (called Spit Back) and I vape a lot. However I've been in Ketosis for a few weeks now. So I agree Vaping doesn't knock you out of Ketosis. However I feel like I get my sugar rush from the juice. So it's a win win😁 Also down 40lbs in 3 months. Am off Diabetic meds and my A1C is under 7😆. All my cholesterol numbers are in a healthy rangs now as well. Again thanks for your input on the subject.

"Despite having a minimal effect on blood sugars, both aspartame and stevia raised insulin levels higher than even table sugar." Jason Fung - The Obesity Code His source for this claim is: Anton SD et al. Effects of stevia, aspartame, and sucrose on food intake, satiety, and postprandial glucose and insulin level. Appetite. 2010 August; 55(1):37-43 Dr. Fung also points out that there are conflicting studies on this and that at times, you will need to determine who paid for the study to help determine its validity. (Not a direct quote, just my interpretation of what he wrote in his book.)

The oils may break the fast but trace minerals maybe not especially if they are in liquid/ionic form but just a guess i'm not 100% sure myself. Just take D and Omegas with meals and the rest with meals you don't need them as your body adapts to fasting you load up the night before and get daily sun way better than vitamin D.

Multivitamins at least the ones that I have bought would be a no go, they contain carbs from fruit concentrates, and apparently gelatin carries non essential amino acids namely glycine, glutamic acid, proline, and alanine (I looked it up) so gelatin would be ok since it doesn’t carry leucine which Tom mentioned causes a spike.

Capsules have usually carriers which can break fasting, so it's better to use supplements in forms of pure powders. Omega 3's are basically fats, so can break fasting. Calcium, minerals - don't break fast (if in "pure" forms). Vitamins are often made in capsules with other carriers like fats or forms of sugars. Gelatin is basically protein, so if BCAA makes little spikes in insulin level then it might too.
