Fasting Guidelines: What You CAN and CANNOT Drink- Thomas DeLauer… All right, so you're trying out intermittent fasting, or maybe you're doing a prolonged fast for a little bit more of an extended time period. The fact is, you might be a little bit confused as to what's going to actually break your fast and what is not going to break your fast, particularly in the world of liquids. You see, liquids are kind of ambiguous with fasting because we automatically assume that because it's liquid, it's not food, therefore because it's not food, we have a hard time fathoming what's going to actually break our fast or not.
I wanted to clear it up. So many people ask questions, and if we actually just put it in a simple yes or no checkbox, it'll help you out. It'll help you get through your fasting period in a more effective way, but you'll still also know that things that you can implement to help you get through the day so fascinating isn't quite so difficult. Literally as we go through, I'm going to give it either a green check mark or a red X and I'm going to help you know what's going to work for you.
If you're going to have coffee, it needs to just be black. You can add some stevia to it, but do not add any sugar. Do not add anything that has a caloric value. So for the most part, creamers are a no go, sugars area no go.
Well, let's talk about bulletproof coffee for a second. This is a big one. Drum roll, what's it going to be? Here is where people really get confused, and this is a question that comes up so often. Bulletproof coffee, is it fasting safe, and it is, not fast and safe. Similar to how we talk about the creamers, bulletproof coffee is just this confusing aura in the fasting community. The reason is because so many people have touted bulletproof coffee as something that will help your fast.
They're like, "Oh, it's got MCTs, it's got coconut oil, it's got ghee in there. It's going to help you burn more fat." No, huge correction, you need to know this. Bulletproof coffee is phenomenal if you're on a keto diet. But, bulletproof coffee does not lend itself to fasting. You know how many calories are in a cup of bulletproof coffee? We're talking like 300, sometimes 400 calories. That's a lot of calories. That by no way is fasting safe unless you were doing some form of a liquid fast, which we can talk about at a different time. I've done videos on that too.
Now, when it comes down to black tea and green tea, you are good to go. So, yes on black and yes on green. Now, here's the cool thing. You guys probably know Jason Fung, right? He does a lot of KZread videos in the world of fastening, Dr Jason Fung. He's just amazing in the world of fastening. He came out with this stuff, Pique Tea Crystals. They sent me some and I told him that I would put them in a video because these things are awesome.
Bone broth or broth in general has calories and it's a food. You want to use it to break your fast, but don't treat it as a fasting friendly liquid because it has calories. And, it has collagen which is a protein, which has a pretty good metabolic effect on the body. So, it's very good and you break your fast because it helps heal your gut lining, but you don't want it during your fast. So unfortunately, broth is a no go during the fast.
Spices and oils. The reason I put this is because people ask a lot of questions like, can I add ginger to my tea? Can I add cayenne to my ACV drink? All that. Spices, yes, you're good to go. I'm cool with that. Oils, no, don't add any oils. People want to add like peppermint oil and things like that to their coffee. Nah, you're talking calories there so avoid that. Again, I have to give it a two here.
So, Diet soda is a gray area, but if you go with one that's sweetened with stevia, monk fruit, and unfortunately as much as I hate to say it, aspartame, you're probably fine. See, aspartame technically it doesn't elicit an insulin response. As much as I hate the stuff, I'm also being honest with you guys. You're probably okay if you have a diet coke or something. So, I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to give it a green check mark, but I'm not happy about it.
I hope that this sums it up. This is a pretty clear outline of where I see questions come in all the time. You probably have some more. Feel free to put them down in the comment sections below. What I'll do is probably do a follow up video on some of the other ones that come in through the comment section.

    Almost 59 now, I have been fasting and eating low/no carb for about 9 months now. I will do a 48 hr once a month and a 36 hr every week, OMAD in between time. My weight went from 235 to 175, blood pressure down to normal and the big one, a reduction in Triglycerides, my dad is Type 2 and I want nothing to do with that. Anyone just getting into this, it is tough at first, hunger pangs can be quite persuasive. Stick it out however and it gets much easier to continue when the results are so positive.

    I am 69yrs 6 months. Gained 22 kg during lockdown. Not moving, became depressed. Took antidepressants which slowed my metabolism. I started out on eating 6 oz of salmon a day and a piece of fruit. Now on day 5 , I am doing 1 day of water fasting. I am very thirsty this morning, have had 3 cups of herbal tea,I cup black coffee ( it helps ketosis). It is recommended to drink 2 to 3 litres of water a day. I plan to not eat until I feel hungry, be it tomorrow or in 3 days time. I have been sedentary too long. When loose my fat and return to 52kg or 54 kg I will be able to fit into my good clothes.

    @@miguelmejia4656 → I only just now saw your response so this is a bit delayed. I was told I have Type-II. At age 71 I've known this for 10 years (since surgery to have my whole colon removed). I was at blood sugar of 180+ fasting and 412 at ½ to 1 hr after eating. My BMI was in the overweight class. A1c was 8.8 and has been as high as 14.4 2 years ago. BP was 150+/90+ (some variance) Pulse 92. Triglycerides 927. HDL 30. LDL Terrible acid reflux that prevented me from sleeping often. So I figured that drastic measures are needed. For my conditions I was taking lisinopril for BP, gemfibrozil and glemiperide for elevated triglycerides. A month ago, 4 months after start of regiment, I had a medical check up for the Type-II which the doctor calls me in for every 6 months. At that time blood was drawn. My new stats: sugar 98 that morning, Gets up to 142 at 1 hr after eating in last few weeks but comes down fairly fast, BMI 23.5, A1c 5.6, BP 112/68, pulse 69, Triglycerides 231 (needs to come down under 149), HDL 77 (should be > 39), absolutely NO acid reflux since begin of low carb diet. The results, according to the PA, are remarkable and I was able to regale her with the whole story. She said she would check into some of the statements I made such as "you can't eat too much of the good fats" and "salt is very good for you". I stopped taking all meds. I haven't even taken an ibu or aspirin for years. I have pedaling device under my desk and pedal when I'm at the PC - the Inmotion e1000. It's not as good as really cycling but I'm not able to do that for medical reasons having to do with no colon. Thanks for asking.

    @@caronamala438 → please see response to Miguel. I consider mine a true success story. The only problem is that I have only 2 pants left that won't fall off and my wedding band has fallen off a few times. I had been in size 38 territory and a month before I decided to do this I had purchases some shorts. Even 34s are getting loose now. The old clothes will end up at GoodWill. I never wore some of them. Another thing that sort of bothers me is that I can not hold cold things, not even a can of tomato juice. My fingers freeze too fast. I wear pot mittens to take stuff out of the freezer. Also, I've tried drinking a cocktail now and then and it gets me tipsy in a hurry. Not much fun. Back in the day I did my share of drinking so it's not as if I don't know how. I know this is not for everybody. At the beginning I told myself I would fast for 10 days or until my fasting sugar came under 100. That only took 5 days. Some of the things I enjoyed don't even interest me anymore - bread, potatoes, beer, and many carb "foods" which are really not necessary for the body. I recommend youtubing Dr. Fong, Dr. Ken Berry, and many others to get the last 15 years' of research from all over the world. These people are not selling anything, they just want to make us healthy. @@dwnwa1872 honestly I did omad for ten days and quit. Only lost 1 pound, had a lot nausea, dizziness despite hydrating. I also think I completely shut down my metabolism. Then I quit and gained back within a day. I think I only lost water weight. But now I switched back to regular and just focused on eating more fruits and veggies. I lost the same weight again but I don’t look like a prune. I am not saying it’s bad, I just don’t think that it’s for me and I’m sharing my experience.

    Just get ones that don't have any added vitamins like Vit C (because the body sees that as food), or any added sweeteners that are not on the keto approved list. There's lots of electrolyte powders out there. The ones that are JUST electrolytes will not break your fast and will actually help you. Also, just adding some pink salt or sea salt to your liquids will help keep your electrolytes balanced. Don't be shy with the salt! But NEVER use regular table salt that is iodized. That stuff will kill you! Always a pure mineral salts like pink or sea salt. Use a grinder and you're good to go.

    Hi Thomas thanks for the videos, I been learning alot from you. I have one question, does creatine break fast?

  • @olkid
    @olkid5 жыл бұрын

    I have been intermittently fasting on a daily basis (used to do 16/8, whereas I now do OMAD - around 20-22 hours fasted everyday) for about 2 years. I used to drink black coffee while fasting as 1) I love coffee and 2) it's a powerful combo when combined with the intrinsic mental clarity and efficiency that fasting enables. However, after watching Dr Rhonda Patrick on the Joe Rogan Podcast where she explained that anything other than water starts the timer so to speak on the digestive enzymes that work within the body, I opted for water only. It makes sense when you consider that coffee obviously has to be processed and broken down in some way for the polyphenols to aid in autophagy etc. I'm unsure if this has any impact on the effectiveness of fasting but just thought that it is worth noting. I would be interested to hear your thoughts Thomas. Either way, fasting is an incredibly powerful tool that has truly changed my life. Happy fasting everyone x
