Go Here to Download Your Book - www.myboxingcoach.com - What boxing stance should I use? Definitely one of the most common questions I am asked as a boxing coach. In this video we are going to work through the question of 'What boxing stance should I use' from beginner boxer through to advanced boxer level.

1:21 What boxing stance should I use - lefty or righty?
2:15 7 steps to your boxing stance
3:26 Rear foot position
5:05 Boxing stance width
6:28 Squared boxing stance
7:23 Weight distribution with the boxing stance
8:25 Guard position in the boxing stance
10:07 Weight on front leg (Vasyl Lomachenko)
12:19 Wrap up
When considering what boxing stance you should use, go beyond whether it's just left or righty (southpaw or orthodox). At the most simple level we need to consider foot position, front foot and rear foot), boxing stance width, boxing stance alignment.
From there, do we go for a side on boxing stance or a squared boxing stance? What does each boxing stance offer in respect of mobility vs power? What about the guard element of the boxing stance? What type of guard should we use and how does our range in respect of the opponent affect our choice of boxing stance?
Then a huge part of the whole conundrum of what boxing stance you should use is your body weight distribution. Do you use a boxing stance with your body weight on the front leg, central or the rear leg? When in each of these boxing stance variations, what type of guard should you use?
So there we have it, I hope that after this video you will at least have the beginnings of the answer to the question 'What boxing stance should I use'?

I started orthodox and write right handed but I am ambidextrous with sports and work. I realized in my later years that my body leans to south paw and now train only in it. My whole situation is unorthodox because I mainly train myself due to the difficulties presented in my region for finding a good coach or gym but youtube has for sure help. thank you for the tips.

    - front foot forward can leave you off balance when throwing hooks. Keep at 45 - squared stance gives more power to H and U, but less mobile - can shift weight between back and front legs as well as regular equal distribution

@@myboxingcoach Simply the truth. I've not heard a more cogent explanation. I came from kickboxing/muay thai, so the front leg facing straight ahead (11:30AM to 12 PM on a clock) is needed to check low kicks, which I believe you alluded to, but the consequence is a slight imbalance when the cross goes out and less ability to move in and out of range quickly (bouncing in and out). Boxing has different requirements, as you noted. Well, wonderfully done, and thank you, again.

Im orthodox. I keep my right hand up by my chin like I'm on an old rotary phone, there to catch incoming jabs and for hooks I just open my hand and 'earmuff'. I keep my left elbow on my side and cover my diaphragm and liver with my arm. I 'march down' my opponent with my weight on my front leg but shift to the back leg when we're at range. I want them to overreach and I make up ground by shifting my weight forward. I like to keep at active jab pumping and feigning and going for body shots. Throw left hooks to pin a their rear guard before throwing rights down the middle. Dont square up until their back is to the ropes or in the corner. Don't widen your stance and become too slow and allow them time to run whereever they want and choose whatever angles they like.

In Taekwondo, we train both sides equally. I'm not sure how much of that comes down to tradition or the footwork we use, or how much is just because that's the way we kick. In TKD, it's common to punch while stepping forward, either with the same hand as we step, or with the cross hand. I've seen Lomachenko use this kind of footwork in his boxing. When you step, you've switched sides. However, I think a big reason is because of how kick-heavy our style is, especially combinations. It's very common in TKD to use the rotation from one kick to turn into the next. There are some kicks I do better with one leg than the other, but I also find that training the kick on the bad leg can help me figure out how to further improve my good leg.

Ah yes, I've often seen TKD bouts where they constantly switch side to side Daniel (will always watch when the Olympics is on). Lots of similarities👍

fran sands ! i have a question regarding the JAB ! i hope this makes sense, when i jab from guard for example do i rotate my WRIST to make up for lack of full rotation of my forearm ? or do i focus on rotating my fore arm all the way ? ill tel you exactly what i mean, put your lead guard hand up in guard position, starting position with your palm facing you obviously, then just turn your wrist so now the back of you hand is facing you ! now am i suppose to move my wrist in that way to any degree ?? or is it all forearm / elbow muscle turning ? in other words do i fully isolate my wrist at all times ? i know you arent stupid but this is the clearest way i figured i could ask my question

I see a very big gap here leaving out how squared boxers use their stance to 1. Move laterally 2. Close range 3. Use leverage to create power and speed. You should also be cautious to have your feet behind eachother as it limits lateral movement, range control and leverage. I'm not sure what Fran's thoughts are on this but I know that pretty much anyone familiar with squared boxing will disagree with Fran here. I would appreciate it if @Fran Sands could explain his thought process here.

Hello fran. I am a stocky but lean mma fighter (5'5 , 170 lbs , 65 inch reach) . I am also a southpaw. You see, southpaw vs orthodox fights are more rangey. Closing the distance is harder as a southpaw in my opinion. Do you think i should switch to orthodox for the purpose of closing the distance easier ? Or do you have any tips for me as a stocky southpaw ? Thank you for this amazing video by the way.

I'm cross handed. I write & eat with my left hand, my functional arm is my right hand. My left leg is immobile when in front. my stance is south paw, my left arm only seems to be good with straights & uppercuts which took me weeks of only using my left arm on the heavy bag & mitts to develop

Never really thought too much about that David. Maybe narrows the stance a bit too much, then again if you punch like Liston did who cares! Will look into that a bit👍
