The overhand right is a great active counter punch against an incoming jab. When I say 'active counterpunch' I mean that it lands at the same time as the opponent's jab is extended.
The overhand right is different from the straight right hand or the right cross. Remember, when you want a straight right hand, the later in the rotation of the body that you leave the shot the straighter the right hand will be. If you release the arm early in the rotation then the right hand will land on a slightly different line.
The boxing overhand right has broadly the same body mechanics as the straight right hand and the right hook. The difference is in the shop of the arm - it needs to arc down slightly to 'get over' the outstretched jab of the opponent.
Remember to keep your left hand high to add extra protection against incoming right hands from the opponent. Remember also not to over-commit - you should always have in your mind 'what if I miss'? You don't want to be out of control and over-committed.

I want to learn the variation of the overhand rod Taylor uses this video is a great start and I've actually learned some things 👍🏼
I have to say, the boxing E-book is absolutely brilliant! The sheer amount of information that beginners like me can learn from is invaluable. I cannot fathom how such a comprehensive resource is free! Cheers coach!

@@myboxingcoach Yes sir. I’m 17, just about to have my first amateur fight and your videos have always been a good guidance for me. Thanks for it all, ill definitely be tuning in regularly!
- use in addition to: straight right (late release straighter), right cross (later release), right hook - curl arm, head off centerline - often to counter a jab - examples: julio chaves sr, duran - don't overuse. Use alongside other backhands
Awesome Fran, keeping it simple but impactful
Thanks a lot mate💯
Thanks for making this tutorial Thank you Coach
Thank you!
Excellent simple instruction on the overhand right, also is a great punch for shorter people like myself.will be adding this setup to my shadowboxing and sparring..keep them coming
Will give this a shot , thanks Coach
Nice video, good training!
Splendid.
Fran - I like that you teach this punch to be thrown in a non-telegraphic manner. There are a number of coaches that feel it should be delivered more as a swing. Your method provides more control and accuracy. Thanks so much for your time.

Thank you William. Hope all is well 👍
Outstanding explanation, coach. I see the overhand right as a right hook with a lean. It took me a while to get it down. Something that helps me is to imagine my head is following a rainbow pattern as I lean towards my lead leg.
Excellent instructions, coach! Thank you for the detail on all variations, release, foot position, and angle the hand travels. Nice job.

I always chuckle when you get into the boxing stance. You always look down to check the feet. I imagine you doing it every time you reposition during a fight.

Thank you for the details on these 3 punches. I have never heard an explanation of the punch mechanics in terms of release time - it makes a lot of sense. Most people that I have trained with use the cross/straight interchangeably. Many thanks for the clarification!

Thank you for this video. A so called boxing coach got into an argument with me at the market, of all places, when he heard me talking about a over hand right. He said "there is no such thing as an overhand right". And, proceeded to try to debate the issue. I was so confused.
Actual lessons.

I always love your instructions. You show too the importance of never getting sloppy by losing your center of balance. Sure, that can work with 'regular people,' but when dealing with someone who knows what they're doing, especially in a street fight too, that sloppiness can really cost you since you left yourself out of control unbalanced as your opponent still has their control to take advantage of the situation. NOT good. I once had a person who was very skilled and much bigger than me wanting to take my head off just because he felt he could but he got sloppy and I took advantage of it big time. Fortunately for him, I'm a sane person even in the extreme fear that guy had me in. I could have finished him off easily but saw it was not worth it. Today though, many will finish you off just for the pleasure of it. Follow Fran, be in control and don't get sloppy.

@@myboxingcoach Fran, you're such a blessing. Yes, your channel is a boxing channel, not a martial arts or self-defense channel; yet the things you bring in or so right-on that it pertains to more than just boxing. I'll say that certainly most don't know the damage empty hand and 'feet' (meaning show wear on the feet too), can do. It's all EXTREMELY dangerous. Here in the USA more people are killed with just hands and feet than all the rifles combined. Not to mention, the long-term injury affects. Ring boxing is one thing, on the street with no rules is another thing. In either...one can't get sloppy. On the street, know what you're doing the best you can and do ALL you can to stay out of it. None of it is worth silly pride.
👍👍👍
Great video coach!, thanks for share it. One question, what is the difference between your overhand and an overhand hook?
@myboxingcoach
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Leonardo. Range, one is long range, one is mid range 👍
Your explanation of the timing of the release of the punch that creates the right cross versus straight right is unusual because I've never had anyone explain it so clearly, if at all. In fact, I've mostly heard the terms used interchangeably, when obviously there is a difference. Well stated. Much respect from the USA.
👏👏👏👏
good video as always, Fran! I have a request: could you film more often sideways? I'm just speaking for myself here, but perhaps others might agree: I find it somehow more insightful when I see the same technique both from up front and sideways as especially when you discuss varying ranges. I'd say it would make it just that bit clearer (than it already is, don't get me wrong!)

@@myboxingcoach yeah don't get me wrong, your vids are fine, but sometimes in specific circumstances it would help to see it sideways so i can get a better idea of range, form, etc. maybe im just weird. lol.
