Looking out across the River Forth, we can see the Scottish capital, Edinburgh and the distinctive shape of the ancient volcano that the city surrounds. But we have not come here for the view! We have come along to Pettycur Bay on a freezing winter's day in search of the most unique sea glass we have ever found in Scotland - these incredible Emerald Green pieces of glass have puzzled us before, and Nicole has long since mentioned that there was some reports of an old Glass factory in the area... So, we, eventually, decided to do a little digging in the historical records... Sure enough, a glass works once stood above this beach, where the houses now stand - Craig tells you all about it in the video...
We find the most amazing Green sea glass - the pieces look like uncut gem stones, but they are actually made from sand collected from this very beach! A glass factory once stood above the harbor wall, making bottles for the Scottish Whisky trade. That factory stood her until economic collapse in the 1980s saw a swift demise in demand for luxury items, and with that, many of Scotland's industries fell. The factory was demolished and the housing we see today was built her, is this magical harbour bay.
The sea glass pieces we find here never became bottles... they have only ever existed in this state... These are the drops that escaped production and returned to the beach to mix again with the sands of this coast. That's why we only find it here - the glass is off this place and no other, making it perhaps the most unique sea glass ever?
We hope you enjoyed today's video... Thank you so much!

I could hear that biting wind. The day was clear and sharp, oh I remember those bitter, bright, cold days, could just about take your breath out your lungs it was so cold. It was like trying to breathe ice water. Your nose would chill and run, your lips would chap and burn. I am SO glad I live in the sub tropical Bay of Plenty now….great video. I felt for your wee Scottish finger tips.

Hi Nicole and Craig. Really enjoyed your wee expedition to Pettycur. My wife enjoys a wee scour about the beaches herself but thus far we haven't been down to this one. We did do a wander along to Burntisland a few years ago. Just making it off the beach before almost being cut off by the tide! I remember the United Glass factory. It occupied the site under the cliffs where those 'new' houses are now. When I was an apprentice electrician, I was involved in the rewiring of the scheme above the harbour area. A woman who lived in those houses worked in the work canteen at United Glass so we used to pop down there for the odd lunch. The folks who own The Bay Hotel and caravan park are old friends so we'll maybe have to make a day of it and pay them a visit and go down for a scrounge about when the weather gets a bit better. Some nice views down there but on a good day, the views from the caravan park are simply spectacular. Cheers.

Hi! So glad you enjoyed it! Hope you get a chance to re-visit the place and enjoy treasure hunting in this amazing bay! Oh! The tides on this streach are very tricky - they come in quite fast in this bay! That is so cool - its amazing to hear that you remember the factory being there... It must have looked quite different...its pretty quiet now, so hard to imagine when it was a hive of activity! We have never popped into the park, but will have to do that for the views - if you fancy a wee climb, there is an old, long abandoned, mining village in the hills nearby - it was called Binnend... Following the path along the side of the fields on the hill, takes you to the most spectacular views along the Forth - we made a video up there a year or so ago! Very many thanks! Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo PS. good luck beachcombing!

I have done some carving on a few larger pieces for pendants - I made a necklace for my mom a few years ago with several pieces and they read ' I love you' :) I carved a bird and a cat paw and a mermaid as well! I haven't carved an entire piece into a shape but I have seen sea glass being transformed into things like a starfish by other creatives.

I realise this is an old video and you may have already been but you should go to Kinghorn Harbour beach too. On a good day the tide goes out really far and you can walk around the rocks on either side going towards Pettycur or away in the other direction. I spent so many childhood summers at kinghorn Harbour. I'm sure it will have sea glass around those rocks although it's been a while since I visited it. There's actually hidden coves in kinghorn if you walk next to the train line/old caravan park (not pettycur but the now private caravan park in kinghorn) then jump over the seawall (when tide is out).

Oh we've actually never looked at Kinghorn because it's so small but walking around the coves sounds amazing :) Maybe in the summer!

@@scottishmudlarking it is very small but as it's between Kirkcaldy and Pettycur I bet there's sea glass around that area. It's been so long since I've been but it is one of my favourite places in Fife. I did do metal detecting there once mainly found fishing hooks and modern coins though.

I could feel how cold that was!! Good that you started to get some nice little pieces, perfect for your jewellery. I've been running backwards and forwards to Edinburgh Airport recently and depending on departure times I've been visiting the beaches with my dogs on the way home. So far I've stopped at Aberdour (Black Sands), stopped off at Dalgety Bay and Burnt Island. This one that you're at is further along the cost but not too far. Any suggestions for a good beach to visit? X

Thanks so much Karan! How did you find Aberdour Black Sands - there is silver Sands right next to it! Did you go to the Mermaid's tears cove in Burntisland - it's just past the car park near the swimming pool, towards the Sea...follow the path on the coast! Kirkcaldy has always been nice for pottery, it's getting a bit picked over now and we haven't been for nearly two years so I expect it's changed... Check out our Fife Coastal Path series for some more info on places - links to long videos are in the description. :)

@@scottishmudlarking I have a vintage set with glass birds and all metal fittings, but noticed around 8 yrs ago a few of the big department stores were recreating a lot of old vintage tree decorations, you know the type with the neon bright colours, well a few also recreated the birds except they had those awful green clamps! They were a deeper tree green, think that ones bees sun bleached! 😂

Could you not pick all the little pieces of plastic as their terrible and just pop into nearest bin

  • @scottishmudlarking

You are right - its horrible stuff! Check out our past videos where we collect and use plastic from a number of different beaches - I've copied a few links here. We often collect plastic and try to encourage its use in art because that way, it gets trapped outside the immediate environment... We collect and bin a lot each week we're filming, or just walking, too, but we know binning is just displacing it into a landfill or even just getting it dumped somewhere that it will be equally nasty. Sadly, we cannot collect it all... This beach alone has a vast collection of nurdles - the tiny component pieces that are melted down to make plastic items - we did a special on that to draw awareness, but we can't collect them all, there must be hundreds of thousands of these tiny plastic pieces on this beach... Here are a few of the videos we have made that focus on the problem and, we hope, give some creative ideas about using it. Thank you so much, its an important issue!
