Causes of Hyperpigmentation of skin
Hyperpigmentation of the skin occurs when certain areas of the skin become darker in color than the surrounding skin. This darkening is primarily due to an increase in the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of our skin, hair, and eyes. There are several common causes of hyperpigmentation:
Sun Exposure: UV radiation from the sun is a major contributor to hyperpigmentation. It stimulates melanin production as a defense mechanism against UV damage. Prolonged and unprotected sun exposure can lead to freckles, age spots (lentigines), and overall skin darkening.
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): This occurs as a result of skin inflammation or injury. Conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and cuts or burns can trigger an inflammatory response in the skin, leading to excess melanin production in the affected area.
Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, especially during pregnancy (melasma or chloasma) or when taking birth control pills, can lead to increased melanin production, causing dark patches on the skin.
Genetics: Some individuals are genetically predisposed to develop hyperpigmentation. This may be more common in people with darker skin tones.
Skin Trauma: Any trauma to the skin, including surgeries, laser treatments, or chemical peels, can trigger hyperpigmentation as part of the healing process.
Medications: Certain medications, like antimalarial drugs, some antibiotics, and chemotherapy drugs, can cause hyperpigmentation as a side effect.
