What are the differences between the MagBox vs MagSphere?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

MagBox 24” Octa Starter Kit: magmod.co/1xgke
MagSphere: magmod.co/eHA6i
Two of the most popular MagMod modifiers are the MagBox and MagSphere. The question often pops up regarding the difference between each. So while on a shoot with our model Mary, Trevor Dayley decided to take a few shots with each modifier in the exact same position so we can see the difference between them both.

Neither of those were Rembrandt Lighting. They were both split lighting. Rembrandt Lighting must come from above and the shadow must touch the lip.

I have both and in terms of usability, the magsphere is more practical. I find myself using rapidbox or glow-ez softboxes since they are more compact. I love the magbox but it is just too bulky to carry or pack for a destination shoot. I can fit 3 stands, 3 softboxes and a few accessories in the same space that the magbox occupies. I wish the magbox case had wheels or an adjustable strap or more handles. 2 cents

Ok I believe that if you use a magsphere and a reflector you would get the same soft shadow as Trevor did using the magbox. Of course you would have to work around with the reflector moving it towards and afar from the model or subject.

I'd love to see the same comparison between the two products, but with the stand farther from the subject. It seems that lots of bts in the community are showing the box being used 5-8' away. Are there any benefits to using the MagBox over the sphere, when that far from the subject?

The further away, the harsher the light will be (as the light source gets smaller father away). They are both small light sources, so best used quite close if you want soft light

Wouldn't you just dial down the power of the flash? Within the softbox you will have more light fall off compared to the distance of the Sphere.
