What Are The BARROW-WIGHTS? | Middle Earth Lore

Ойын-сауық

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Today we bring you a bonus video as we look at one of the more horror type creatures from Tolkien's world! We look at the undead creatures that occupied the Barrow-downs, the Barrow-wights! They appear as shadowy figures with a pale, icy light gleaming from what would be their eyes. They speak with deep, hollow and cold voices, which would freeze the bravest hearts. But just how did these wights come to exist in this area?
Let's explore what information we can find on this!

Not sure why Frodo was the only one of the hobbits left conscious by the barrow wight - of course the plot would have ended right there if they all had been unconscious and at the mercy of the wight! But I think it's perhaps because he is the ring bearer that gives him some special ability to remain awake and alert, not only strong enough to grab a sword and hack off the crawling arm, but with his wits and memory intact enough to summon the aid of Tom Bombadil.

My personal theory is that the barrow-wights are a more "physical" and lesser version of what the Nine became. perhaps beings who were wounded with Morgul blades and faded to become servants of evil. It's actually a detail I enjoyed about the Angmar campaign in Battle for Middle Earth 2.

The war with Angmar sounds good. I've wondered about the wights. I settled on the idea that the spirits of corrupt servants of Sauron, or the Witch King, were held in this world to continue to serve after they had died. Necromancy. These undead servants were sent to reanimate the remains of those who been buried in the mounds. The spirits of the dead, buried there had already gone on.

  • @MrHaighahatta

    @MrHaighahatta

    2 жыл бұрын

It would be the final insult for the Witch King to reanimate the remains of Arnor's honored dead with the spirits his own servants. However, the fact that Tom Bombadil removes the grave goods/treasures from the barrow to prevent the barrow wight's return suggests an independent cause for the "haunting" of the barrows.

I also like to add that one of the cruelest and most vile forms of Necromancy the Witch King and the other Black Numenorean sorcerers used could also trap the souls and spirits of recently slain enemy's within their own lifeless body. They could puppeteer them, forcing them to attack former allies and also turn them into wraiths....the biggest proof of this was in the tragic fate of Captain Carthin who was the brave and loyal friend of the last prince of Cardolin. He alongside the last of the brave defenders of the Barrow-Downs tried to stop the tainting of the graves of Arnor by the sorcerers of Angmar, but the Witch-king's right hand man Morgomir another fellow black rider and lieutenant of Carn-Dum accompanied with a large force of dark rangers proved too much and overwhelmed the young Captain and his army. Rather than simply killing him Morgomir stabbed the Captain with a Morgul Blade and struck him down, but his spirit remained in his lifeless body unable to depart to the west by the curse of the dagger and the dark spells of the sorcerers. He was corrupted and transformed into Karsh the whispering wraith of Angmar. For centuries Karsh was forced to haunt and help destroy both the kingdom of Arnor and the people within it longing for oblivion and the freedom by death. When Angmar fell the elves were finally able to use their exocisom skills to destroy his corrupted undead inslavement, freeing and bringing peace to his soul forever......

If we look at the map of the first age we see that Iron mountains or Angband, Ered Luin (Blue mountains) and the northern Misty mountains or the grey mountains were all connected. So it is possible that after the war of wrath and downfall of Morgoth all the remaining orcs, trolls, dragons, The balrog, Sauron and other evil beings escaped through the mountains to the lands later known as the Angmar. And these wraiths are either souls of the easterlings who fought with the Morgoth or souls of the captured elves or men (or even dwarfs) who were imprisoned and tormented by Morgoth, Sauron or the witch king. And if my theory about escaping through the mountains is true it could also explain The Balrog in Moria, Smaug The Dragon near Erebor and the trolls with Gondolin Swords near misty mountains.

I seem to recall there was a passage about the barrow downs. And that they were burial place of kings of the North, who in the fall of their times built tombs greater than halls of the living. And that it spoke of the corruption of the lines of numenor becaise their kings and nobles chose to be buroed woth theor riches. With that in mind, it makes sense that the wights of each barrow or burial mound, are the raised spirits of those corrupted kings, protecting their hoards and by the Wotch King's bidding, terrorizing any mortals that stray upon their lands.

I am pretty certain that it doesn't work that way. Sauron had that kind of power over the spirits of The Nine because he captured their souls with the Rings of Power he gave them, but the Witch King should not be able to keep a man's spirit tethered to Middle Earth after the man's death. The spirit should go the Halls of Mandos.

It is worthwhile to mention that in the first age Sauron created ware wolves by placing evil spirits into wolf like monsters he had constructed. Also at the time of the war with Angmar there was a shadow in Mirkwood known as the Necromancer who was eventually found out to be Sauron. It is my theory that Sauron used the same powers that he used to create the ware wolves and earn the title the necromancer to create, essentially, zombies out of the bodies buried in the Burrow downs and placed them under the Witch King’s command.

I read a theory that the Wights physical forms were the corpses from the mound, but the spirits that animated them were tortured spirits of dead elves (men?) twisted by Sauron (or Melkor) and unable to depart for the Halls of Mandos. The Witch-King summoned them to the mounds and bound them to the bodies of the dead buried there.

They're rare and how would Sauron, let alone the Witch King be able to send such forth? It makes sense that the wights would be along the same manner of spirits that Sauron used when creating Werewolves. Wicked spirits, could be elves, orc or men. It would seem to line more-so with men and elf rather than any other. / The gift of death just means that when men die, they are not bound spiritually to Arda. They terry some in the Halls of Mandos, then move on to somewhere else. Sadly, so many secrets died with Tolkien, and while sad it may be a blessing as we get to have conversations like these. :)

War of Angmar, defonitely Great video, thanks! One theory on the origin of the Barrow Wights that I've seen (A Tolkien Bestiary by David Day, 1979) is that they are the possessed remains of human kings and princes. What was said to possess them were actually more minor spirits that had been in service to Morgoth that were robbed of physical form during the War of Wrath who ran, fleeing the sun, to the barrow downs or any other place they could take refuge and find new physical forms. There they continued to serve their banished master through the sacrifice of unlucky travelers that they waylaid just as they did the Hobbits in LOTR: FotR.

The Cardolan smiths crafted magic weapons specifically to fight the witch king and his undead. They were the only thing that could hurt them. Merry's dagger was of Cardolan make. It's what he used to stab the witch king with, which is what weakened him and made him corporeal so to speak so that Eowyn was able to finish him. Without Merry doing that, Eowyn's blow would have done nothing.

Actually, what made Merry's sword actually work on the Witch King was the fact that he was not a man, but a Hobbit. That was the prophesy of Glorfindel. The fact that it was a Cardigan Blade was icing on the cake.

The whites are a great example of fantasy undead done right. Mysterious, dangerous, and cursed. Not to mention messing around with the human form, both in the shadowy form who takes frodo into the borrow and in how we only ever see the hand of the entity with the great sword. It's nice seeing the nature of the setting used to help exaggerate some of the horror elements that even 1 undead being can bring to a story.
