    Theoden foreshadows what Aragorn will become as a king. Saruman wanted him incapacitated precisely because he was a great heroic warrior who could lead an army into the worst of battles. The Rohirrim follow him because he is the embodiment of bravery and honor, the leader who will stand or fall alongside his people. May he have a place of honor in the Halls of Eru.

    Dwarves' spats w/ Smaug & balrog-dude might've been avoided with lower ceilings. Grand pillars = overcompensating? Just saying. (Edit: fine aesthetic, though.)

    Well Ted, I see you are still protecting humans, even dressed up as one. You know I'm going to stomp you. There's something about that little human that smells exceptionally familiar. Now Brad, I really can't let you interfere. If you don't leave I'm just going to have to help you leave...forever. Hmmm... somehow I doubt that was the scenario. I also think they eventually knew what each was fundamentally and maybe could identify the specific maiar, but more importantly they recognized what was their alleigance and source of their power.

    Yes at one time but gandalf wouldn't know with miar it was because it was twisted into something else than what he knew before so he probably knew all the fallen miar but probably couldn't tell the difference in the twisted things that they became.

    At the parlay, the Mouth of Sauron may have mocked Aragorn, but he was unable to withstand Aragorns gaze and was cowed. I guess the bearer of Andúrin had the last laugh.

    Cons: There were some plots that went nowhere. Most of the new characters aren't interesting enough to be invested in with a few exceptions like Adar and Durin. The pacing was way too slow. And I hate what they did with Galadriel's character. Pros: There were a few plots that were interesting. It looks AMAZING. The soundtrack is incredible. It brings in some characters from the silmarillion that I've wanted to see for a long time (even if they're not exactly what I expected). Most importantly, it left me wanting another season, and I hope they can learn from their mistakes

    I agree with those who name Luthien as list-worthy. The child of Thingol and Melian has done more than most to prove her power. I would also nominate Ingwe and most of his people, the Vanyar. After all they are the only Elves who took part in the War Of Wrath that brought down Melkor and his minions.

    7 feels about right. They were essentially Morgoth’s praetorian guard, and, alongside dragons, were the most powerful entities he corrupted and were the pinnacle of his upper echelon. Having a small host of them as his most elite makes sense. Three could work, but then Gothmog, ‘the Lord of Balrogs’, would be lord of two other entities which doesn’t seem very imposing or impressive. Seven also feels right for when they burst out of Angband at Morgoth’s call.

    In Estonia, where there are still many holy trees to whom people are still bringing gifts, the folktales considering these trees often tell that the trees had originally been growing somewhere else, but walked to their current site. The reason for the moving was for example a church being built too close, or people turning too greedy or forgetting the old customs of respecting nature.

    This scene with Gandalf the Grey was in stark contradiction to Perter Jackson's adaption of Gandalf the White's confrontation with the Witch King. Since I'm not a Tolkien scholar, it's my opinion IMO. But I don't see how the Witch King would've have stood ANY chance against Gandalf the White. It makes no sense otherwise.

    Gandalf recognizes the Balrog as a Balrog, but there's nothing to suggest he knows this one personally -- if he did he wouldn't say "a" Balrog, but call it by name. The Balrog probably doesn't recognize Gandalf, who is in the guise of an old man, which is why Gandalf tells him who he is. Also, it's interesting to note that Tolkien doesn't say the Balrog is a giant figure, but that it is in the shape of a man and is surrounded by a shadow that stretches across the cavern like vast wings. OTOH the enormous Balrog in the movie is awesome.

    In my mind, all of the Balrogs came down to Arda and took the form of the dark shadowy/firey form that we see described. I can't see any of the Maia from the days of the Valar in the first age building the Lamps or the Two Trees suddenly deciding to travel to the north and take Balrog form like it's some kind of uniform to put on. This had to be some kind of collective decision very early on. Especially since these are basically Morgoth's Preatorian Guard. We see that Durin's bane is still in this form thousands of years later even after the apparent defeat of his master, which suggests that they cannot (or don't want to, or need to) change form so easily, unlike Sauron. In that way, they are similar to the Istari I believe. They made a decision to take this form and wield great and terrible power and they are locked into this until they are slain much like Gandalf and the other Istari. Take for example Ossë we read in the Silmarillion that he was turned for a while to help Morgoth but then came back and was loyal to Ulmo. Would Ossë have transformed into a Balrog because he's a very powerful Maia? It's not said he changed shape or anything but simply wavered in allegiance. With all that said, does that mean Gandalf and Durins bane knew each other even though it's very unlikely they have met physically in Arda/Ea? I think so. All of the Ainur gathered in the halls with Eru before the beginning of the universe and being what they are, spirits, they were all aware of eachother in the creating of the music and then the subsequent events such as being shown the vision by Eru and descending down. They may not have had a conversation in the same way that we think of but there's 100% some kind of telepathic vibes going on between them all. But put simply, when Gandalf told the rest of them to run, it was because he is super old, wise, and knows of the Balrog in Moria (as do many people) and has just put 1 + 1 together. NOT because he magically sensed his old colleague.

    @WasabiSnifferКүн бұрын

    i agree. i don't think they knew each other, but based on the dialog at the bridge, Gandalf would know what the balrog is, not just as a fellow maiar but in the lore and legends throughout middle-earth, and I imagine he's had conversations with the likes of Glorfindel. likewise the balrog may not know who this frail old man is but he would understand the declaration and who he serves.

    The Silmarillion does not give any indication of how much time passed between the creation of the Maiar and the creation of Arda. Everyone of the Maiar could possibly have known every other Maiar intimately in the time before the creation of the world.

    I believe she was what came before Uru, the void itself. The original spirit, when Uru appeared she awoke but was too weak to do anything against the creator of light, but she desired to destroy/consume the light. When Arda was created, she decended on it to feed and gain strength as in the void, there was nothing left, and she could not challenge Uru in his domain.

    Enjoying reading some of the wig jokes but I think that might just be Sauron revealing himself to Celebrimbor after he fooled him as Annatar (and/or as Halbrand). By the time of the sack of Eregion, Sauron's not trying to fool anyone anymore. I'm still hoping Sauron as Annatar will be played by an other actor. If this trailer's Sauron look is Sauron's default/revealed look going forward, I think that would be fine.

    I favor an all of the above approach. Morgoth corrupted elves, men, and potentially ape-like animals and cross-bred them all and infused them with sorcery. Sauron and Saruman also tinkered with their own designs. Thus, not all orcs are identical.

    Sauron getting the One Ring cut from his fallen body is definitely not his first downfall, his name should be changed to whatever elvish for 'the comeback kid' is as many times as he has been completely wrecked and came back. He even lost his body in the downfall of Numenor, the Ring being the only reason he came back so quickly. The prologue to Lord of the Rings is easily his 4th or 5th downfall.

    It would be cool if Gothmog was another Nazgul, but I do not believe that he was. My guess would be the witch king was a Black Numenorean and likely born into or joined at an early age a cult of morgoth/sauron worship. He was noted for his ability, ambition, and lust for power and awarded with a ring of power. I wonder if there was some sort of selection process to be granted a ring. IE Sauron would play two rivals off each other, and they would each go to greater and greater lengths to prove themselves worthy of such a gift from Sauron.
