I'd say regular society DISCOURAGES fertililty rather than the Amish encourage it. Wanting children is natural! When the mom has to go to work and pay thousands per kid to put them in a daycare, then you're told 50,000 dollars in college is required for each kid, having more children seems impossible. When the mom stays home, what's one more? Just a blessing!

Amish fertility depends on how progressive or conservative the group is. Here are the fertilities of the five largest Amish groups in Holmes County, Ohio, listed from progressive to conservative. New Order Amish, 5.8; Old Order mainline, 6.1; Dan (Andy Weaver) Amish, 7.8; Hostetler Amish, 8.7; Swarzentruber Amish, 10.5.

Agreed! Amish are hardworking and honest folk!
As the country wide population decreases, all the woman who are now chasing a career, not having families, having hot girl summers will age and die out. One day they'll realize the mistake they've made and get to enjoy the rest of their lives medicated, fat, probably poor, and lonely. I am happy the Amish will inherit the whole country and move us in the right direction. They are some of the most worthy noble people among us.

Great clip! If they continue growing like this, there will be tens of millions of them just 200 years from now.
This is a great video. In a way, it's easy to see our modern innovations as being the enemy to our own survival. Seriously though, if their population is doubling every 20 years, there'll be close to 4.8 million by 2100, 153.6 million by 2200, and 4,915,200,000(practically 5 billion) by 2300

As far as pro-natalism goes, I think the Laestadian Lutherans are a group we should watch. Numbering around 10,000 in the USA this number could be set to explode in the coming decades--albeit from a far lower base than the famous Amish and various Old Order Mennonite groups. There is surprisingly little out there about them.

They reproduce with their own comunity? Or with non amish? And if they reproduce with their comunity how do they avoid genetic problems like incest?
@nikmichael6803
2 жыл бұрын
There are roughly 361,000 of them (populations need only 500 + for genetic diversity at a minimum). The Amish tend to marry people from other settlements and communities who they affiliate with. Although they stem from a smaller founding population, their genetic diversity is increasing with time (especially as they don't marry cousins or close relatives like many cultures). Many of the "genetic disorders" discussed about them are due to founder effect, while they also have much lower rates of diseases found in the general population, lower cancer rates, less obesity etc.

I believe they often marry in other churches, but typically Amish, or they might stray as far as Mennonite if they're not full blown rejecting God. I don't think incest is a problem, and they don't want to commit incest... There are a lot of Amish and Mennonites you know!

In past only 1 of 3 children live 10 or more years, only 2 of 7 became adult before 19 century. People have many children in past because they want have future, not because children was working in field, little children cannot work in field.
@DainetheHistorian
3 жыл бұрын
бравлер 2 thank-you for your comment! Yes, you are also correct. There were many reasons to have children, and one of them was because many of your children would not survive due to a high child mortality rate, so by having many, you increased your odds that some of your offspring would survive. However, children were certainly expected to help in the home (before dishwashers, washing/drying machines) and older children, including teenagers, were expected to work on the farm.

@@DainetheHistorian In modern days children do more work in schools, than in past in home and field. In past in every moment of time woman have 2-3 live children. Before 19 centuy woman was have 7 children from age 18 to 48 years old, 4 of this children live less than 8 years. Some women was have 15 children but only 4 became adult, some women was childless because of medical reasons. Earth population was growing very slow before medical revolution. I do not know why amish have many children, but I think no one group of people have many children because they use them as slaves to do work.
@DainetheHistorian

Yes, they are only able to do so much work in school because of modern technologies in the home. All throughout history, from the agricultural age, child/teenage labour in the home and on farms, was essential to produce enough food to survive. Do you think throughout history that those 2-3 offspring just relaxed inside and stayed idle while the parents did all the work?
