Sand tip. I have three old CD disks in my camera bag. Place the CDs under the tripod legs. The spike on the legs sit in the holes in the CDs. This increases the surface and prevents the legs from sinking into the sand.

Speaking of 2 second delay, when I was a dslr shooter I used mirror lock up religiously to reduced vibration. I found a shooter once who had a black card he would release (in front of the lens) after and before the bulb mode exposure to reduce the vibration of the flapping shutter, which on a full frame can actually move the camera.

Mirror vibration is definitely a possibility but it has felt too slight to worry about in my experience. At least with the camera bodies I have used. Canon 70D, 6Dm1 and 5Dm4. But worth using mirror lockup if you are noticing a softness you can't attribute to any other part of your workflow! :D Thanks for the tip, May! Always appreciate your support on these videos! Every comment like yours makes the lessons in my video 10x better so I am not just being nice when I say thank you for commenting! :D -Aaron

Add turn off timer sounds on the camera to the list. It gets real annoying , real fast hearing beeps go off every 30 seconds, 20 seconds, whatever. Let me enjoy the stillness of the night sky as much as possible please. Agreed 100% on the lights on the camera tip. :)

Thanks for posting all of these 2 minute videos! If you would have made these 2 years ago when I started getting in to astrophotography, you would have saved me many many hours of research lol

Haha! I was making videos back then too! They weren't Two Minute Tips so definitely hard to know of all the info hidden in my podcast episodes, Milky Way Wednesday Live Streams that often went longer than an hour etc. But I am making amends for that now! I hope to help all of this year's newbies and those of at least the next two years or so until tech changes requires updates! :D Thanks for the kind words and my apologies for not catching your attention sooner! :D -Aaron

Aaron King I watched pretty much almost everything you had on your channel too haha. Your channel was definitely the best one I found when I was looking for information on how to capture my first Milky Way shot. What I picked up from you definitely helped build a solid foundation of knowledge about Astrophotography, that I’ve also been able to use to spark a few people’s love for this type of photography as well!

A tip for sand. You don't really want to shoot in sand where walking around would jiggle your tripod. I shake and sink my legs well down into the sand so no walking around could possible shake the legs.

Which has the potential to be more disruptive to the making of a night sky long exposure; camera movement, or a bowel movement?

So long as you're having your bowel movement, BEHIND the camera, then it's camera movement. :D

Hey Aaron, great videos. Great tips in this one, I'm off to my first field trip with a group of astrophotographers next week.... will heed your warnings. Quick question if I may. I have a NikonP1000 that I use for moon and planet zooms but want to start using my D3400. I currently have the standard lenses that come with it (AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR & AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR) Am looking to buy something to use for Astrophotography and the suggestions have been ( 1) AF-P DX NIKKOR 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR (2) AF-S DX 10-24mm f3.5-4.5G ED and (3) AF-S DX 12-24mm f4G IF ED. What would you recommend ? Thanks

None of those are good for astro. You need a lense with a low f stop number of at least f2.8 but preferably much lower like f1.8 or 1.4 Go with something like the The Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 ED AS UMC if you can. This is the lens I use and Aaron does too. If you can't swing the cost, I have also used the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G. I can shoot some nice astro shots with either of these lenses using the D3400. FYI: I strongly recommend getting that 35mm no matter what you do, because it's a major step up in photo quality over the kit lenses. You'll LOVE that little bugger for all around photography. It a huge bang for the buck! You might find it's all you'll need for a while for astro too. It really does do a good job. It's a great place to start. I hardly ever use the 18-55 kit lens anymore, now that I got that nice little prime (non zoom) lens. It's such a major upgrade and it's like imo a $400 lens or under $200! So get it no matter what you do. That said, I do use my Rokinon for astro of course since I have and got that first.
