'What are Bay Area photographers shooting with?' -- a SF trip vlog/video
I went on this trip approximately 1 month after my appendix ruptured in January 2024. This is the overall vlog/video that was made in-between the SF Walkie Talkies that were made. Enjoy!

Shout out to Paulie B for coming out to SF and showing us some love.
Interesting and cool how different the cameras are in SF to your usual videos. Everyone in NY is always rocking a Leica, like you're gonna get picked on if you don't have the M6. Here there was far more variety, plenty with two cameras, and it was old DSLR's and Olympus Mju point and shoots! Love it.

We don't really look at gear like that out here. Of course everyone wants the best, but we just shoot with whatever we have 🤷♂

Idk, everyone here in NYC has a x100 of some sort or a GR.
Small editorial note, the Lexington closed in 2015. I misspoke in my haste. Definitely check out photographer Chole Sherman's phenomenal new book, Renegades, documenting the 90s queer scene in SF. It's so good.
The photo of the guy jumping over the chain fence was dope.
I love SF. I took lots of photos there on my visit in September 2023.
I'm at SF right now. Having a blast watching the video and recognizing all places.
So happy to see swap film getting much deserved recognition on a channel like this!!
Street photographers owe you a debt of gratiitude for your hard work and celebration of the genre and its exponents, Paulie! Thanks!
Damn, this city is great. Real fun to see it from your point of view. This video makes me want to stop being so shy about saying hi to other people taking photos here. Thanks for showing us big love.
It was a huge pleasure to meet you, Paulie. Thanks for shining some positive light on the Bay Area photography scene.
This video made me miss my home town, moved away few years ago, before I got back into photography. Will try and catch the what we love show when it comes to Warsaw if I hadn't missed it already. Thanks Paulie B for showing sf some love!
Thanks for showing sf some love from KZread. It's definitely in need of more photography coverage on KZread. I live in SJ and I love commuting on Bart to do street photography in SF in my free time.

There's some great stuff over at SJ Japantown! Tons of possibilities and pretty relaxed
Glad you had a good time in SF and showed the local community love! Until next time my friend 🤙🏽
Great to see other vibrant photography communities out there. Looks like a great place to shoot.
shout out to the Bay photographers! What a raw and true photography community on display here - a celebration of the lo-fi beauty of street photography with whatever camera feels right - the joy of seeing street snappers who work a camera till it falls apart if it feels right and does the job - so many point and shoots and slrs on display - the way that fella described his Olympus dslr you know he’s shot the shit out of it and become one with that camera (and let’s be real he would probably get laughed off 5th av if he turned up with a micro four thirds camera) s’like the raw spirit of the old skool Japanese street rats lives on in SF! what a refreshing change to the usual Leica bros mincing on corners with the expensive German jewellery show - the real heads know there ain’t nothing more hardcore than a street, a roll of tri-x and a heavily sellotaped Mju! Hope I get to shoot the shit in SF one day you guys are inspirations! Stay snappin fam 📸 ❤ love
Sheeeeeesh!! The homies RJSF, Dan, LordsofDawgTown and many more. what a moment
I’ve been watching Walkie Talkies non-stop since last week and they are spectacular. Very happy to buy a zine to support more of them! Keep up the good work!
So, those are the people who bought my old point and shoots for too much money😂
Man, that shot of the mother and kid with the golden gate in the background was a sensational catch.
The Leica SF store is literally right across the street from the Dragon Gate at the entrance to China town. Pretty nice store! Love the 16:04 shot, in a world obsessed with ginsu knife sharpness of everything...a photo that's just raw as the local deli and captures the action, the story first and foremost.

I appreciate your work on the ground sir, I shoot from the sky making sure I capture all the beauty in my hometown :)
Paulie got me thinking about The Bear saying “Let it rip”
I love San Fran thank you for reminding me that, that Adam guy is amazing thank you for loving the city and showing its brighter side.
SF is wild
Secrets out bay way more real than midtown manhattan 👀👀
Shout out to Marcus for coming through to Tokyo too. Nice work PB!
Paulie: “I hope the Chinatown in SF can match NY’s energy.” Narrator: “It matched NY’s energy.”
SF looks amazing! cant wait for the Walkie Talkies! got a Zine - nice one! great way to support your trips - come to London!
Amazing how many people are still shooting film, especially on the street with such a high throw away rate.
The Camera Obscura which has been there at The Cliff House from at least the 1950's is like being inside a pin hole camera.
Paulie talking about where the bathrooms are... SURPRISE - we don't have any here lolol
Damn, damn, damn, you won't find a film photography community like this easily. You'd have to drive 3000 miles to find anything close.
dude, that shot @16:27 was worth the whole damn trip... so sick
Love your storytelling! Please keep at it. Always a joy to see a new Paulie B video!
I just love these Walkie Talkies 👏👏👏👏
Awesome to see the city from your perspective
Good to see you come by the city! Loved the shots, glad you had a killer time!
Been hyped for this episode, great stuff 😎
I’d say SF has been quite ‘energetic’, wouldn’t you say? 😂😂 Great episode, as always… Thank you.
Was that Green Apple Books? Lived two blocks away from there in the 90’s. Was just in SF walking through North Beach making images! You should come west more often. SF is an amazing city. Great video, looking forward to seeing the walkie talkie episodes you filmed here!
Fun video. Thanks
3:55 that guy changing the tire... hes definitely tightening the lug nuts lol
Love it paulie keep them coming!
Wow Great Video, I havent been in San Fran since 1992, Love that city. Thank You for all you do.
Wonderful story to your photo trip. Cool stuff!
Seeing you outside of NY was a blast. Can't wait for the Walkie Talkie World Tour Series ❤
Thank you Paulie ! This video looks like so much fun!
Welcome to the West Coast Paulie.... Hope you enjoyed the trip! :-)
Greeeaatt Video!! Which bag are you using ? Looks really comfortable. Thank you so much !
I think people who take street photography with film are more interested in the process of taking pictures rather than the photos themselves. It's virtually impossible to compose with street work, since you typically have seconds or less to capture a moment, so street photography (at least to me) lends itself to taking massive amounts of pictures and culling through them at the end of the day. My question is - why did you use film for this shoot? My guess is (at least for this shoot) because a film camera makes a better youtube story, rather than a film camera taking better shots. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I use film 99% of the time & genuinely enjoy using it more. Pretty simple.
@1970rsc

@@PaulieB yes, but I’m wondering why the preference. I have asked my classmates as well as instructors in my photography courses I’m taking in college, and most responses are usually a vague, “because I like to.” There is nothing about film that one can’t recreate with a simple digital camera and Lightroom, so there isn’t really a practical reason to pick film over digital. I’m thinking it’s the action on the camera to advance the film that makes using the camera look unique that most photographers are drawn to, and not the end result of the photos.

A lot of people enjoy using film because they enjou the end result of developing the film on there own and printing that work in a darkroom@@1970rsc

@@1970rsc automatically having a physical archive via the negative is pretty practical for me.
@1970rsc

@@smithrm941 good point, but you can create negatives from digital simply by using digital transfer film instead of photo paper on your inkjet. I mean, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having an emotional connection to gear with no practical purposes. I get really excited about going on a run with my new Nikes because it inspires me - I don’t think I’d feel the same going out with my Kmart shoes because I don’t have Michael Jordan whispering “just do it” in my ear when I wear my Kmart specials.

I live in sf and started to pick up street photography. This is dope.
So cool you got to check out San Francisco. 👏😎
Yo paulie great vid. what type of bag are you using? Thanks
Thank you Paulie for highlighting the street photography scene in San Francisco. As evident by your video, the SF street photography community is alive and thriving! Shout out to Marcus for the good job recording the video and to Adam for showcasing SF in a different light, pun intended. At the beginning of this year I was fortunate to go out with Marcus and meet some of the guys you featured on the video. Cheers from a SF transplant now living in Lisbon, Portugal. Next time I am visiting my former home town I would like to meet Adam.
nice. Just sat down for lunch and have a tasty new paulie B video
30:31 he said, "relax". And so they did.
Patiently awaiting the BrianWertheim walkie talkie 😈
I do love this channel but I do really hope there are some SF walkie talkies featuring women photographers. And same when you're back in new York. There must be sooooo many great ones out there that need to be given the exposure all these guys get.

@@PaulieB to find or to persuade to be on your channel? I do wonder whether female photographers are a bit less ego driven and so shy away from getting themselves out there. I'm purely basing this on my wife who is a great street photographer but has massive imposter syndrome when it comes to looking at her own work 😢
inspiring. ful stop
Loved this ❤ but I have to ask where do you get your sling bags from?
Great video! Yall hit some of my favorite spots in the city. Is that Filipiino BBQ from Irma's? I can smell that from across the country. Miss the Bay, did a nice job of capturing it.

Yooooo! That is the spot! I hope you got some pork skewers…. FIRE!!!!
I am HERE for a Walkie Talkie world tour
Chinatown and Old St. Mary’s Cathedral in the beginning should be familiar to many early digital camera adopters. Steve’s Digicams was a huge review site and he frequently featured those locations. Sadly, Steve is not with us anymore.
Yeee yeeee 🙌
WoW!! I have to pull out my old film cameras The reason I stopped filming due to not having a place to send the film to get developed So where are you sending too?
Great! No wonder you go thru the rolls so fast when you take doubles. Nice stuff tho!

I’m actually surprised nobody is shooting on an iPhone.
I love your video! I think you should chop this into 3 smaller videos. I almost skipped the cool chinatown scene just because saw the length and was going to move on.
The giant camera I believe is a Camera Obscura, basically a giant pinhole camera.

SF looks phenomenal from a creative and street photography POV, and I'd love to visit just to shoot, but also... Sh*t is wild there nowadays. Some areas are looking kinda 'Escape From LA' dystopian vibes. But again, you get some crazy images!
How do you approach taking a photo in respectful and ethical way on the street ?
