What are 3rd Gen Tacoma SR Utility/Convenience packages?

Lots of Tacoma reviews on net but nobody explains the different SR versions, or they try to and get them mixed up. I just wanted to explain the differences between Utility package, base model, and Convenience package.

Nice video thank you. I bought a 2015 SR the other day and till this video I thought I had an SR5 because of the convenience options. Now I get it.

thanks! i thought about mentioning the sr5 in this as well just to eliminate confusion but decided to stick to this trim level. 3rd gen is 2016+ so SR and SR5 differences are different after the redesign, but there is an sr5 badge on the side pillar just in front of the bed now (used to be on back gate) and i mentioned to look for badges in this vid. SR5 has a chrome bordered front grill, and chrome back bumper instead of key colored like sr (or bare black like SR utility) in both 2nd and 3rd gens. not sure what wheels the 3rd gen SR5's come with stock, but the silver alloy and dark satin SR5 wheels are the best of all the 3rd gens, imo. on the inside, the 3rd gen two tone dash, premium sound display, and graphics in the center of the instrument cluster tip everyone off it's an SR5 if they didn't see the outside first. the SR5 name goes back to a sport package in the 1970's pre tacoma toyota pickups, and evolved over the 1st and 2nd gen tacomas into a separate trim level from the SR, i think, when the SR trim level was introduced in 2014. all the different trims and packages over the years can get confusing.

thanks, man. especially if you're going off road, utility pack SR is the best barebones value truck on the market to build into exactly you want. fender guards, tonneau, after market wheels, and other mods can also match the worry free bare black plastic for no nonsense look. if you looked you could find SR i4 4x4 manual utility packs for under $25k. that's a lot saved for mods to turn it into an off-road beast, put in the retirement account, jetski, wherever else money goes.

Just ordered a 2017 because in Tennessee where I live all the 2.7 4x4's with the cruise, jump seats, & remote keyless entry are sold out. I'm weary of the 3.5 Atkinson motor because it being out only a couple of years since it's been out makes me lean more to the 2.7 5 speed.

yeah, i know EXACTLY what you're going through. i seriously considered ordering through sam's club auto buying site to get the configuration i wanted and keep the price down, and the stuff we are talking about is the rarest of configurations. if i had to guess, double cab short bed 6cyl auto RWD would be the most common config. if we don't order the one we want, we have to search all the local inventory and try to get the best deal on what is available. some people even check inventory in neighboring states. i love that little truck and there is no way i could have ever gotten a better deal on it, but the trade off is that i didn't get my first choice on configuration. in the long run i don't think my not getting my first choice of configuration will make any difference in my use or enjoyment of the truck, especially when considering all the possible mods available for the taco. access cab, 4WD, 4cyl, manual, with 2" lift, good tires, SR5 alloys, and convenience package would be my first choice for stock config because that gives the most bang for the buck and i don't need to tow heavy stuff. maybe add after market rear e-locker, skids, sliders, bumpers, etc, later if i needed to go further off road.

The Utility package has the charcoal grey bumper that makes the frontend look "off". I test drove the base SR 2.7. Though bullet proof and long lasting reliability the 4cyl struggles to power the heavier midsize truck unless stepping on it. imo it's better in the lighter 2004-pre Tacos. Nice truck btw and that looks like Fred Howard park in Tarpon Springs.

yeah the 2tr has been around a long time and the block is from the previous 3rz, so whatever wrinkles they had updating it over the years have been long solved. there are millions of vehicles running 2tr's with several hundred thousand miles dependable driving the norm and no shortage of examples going much further. because it's been around so long, there are also bolt on turbos and superchargers, if you theoretically wanted more power and mileage boost, that of course are not available yet for the new 2gr v6. it all depends on what you are buying the truck for. if you are looking at a specific configuration (manual access cab for ex) then the jump in msrp could be $5k-$6k or more for the atkinson v6 than the i4, then you need the tow package to be able to use it, and once the truck hits the dealer lot msrp goes out the window anyways. i got mine for under invoice, for example. it's almost like toyota has a taco configuration for anyone, though, and if you can't find the one you want in local inventory, you can always order it. i just found the SR taco was a really good value and i love driving it.

The Sr is the way to go. Don’t know what engine I want or if I want the manual or Sr. I’ve had a automatic all my life but I want to try a manual. Don’t know though if I would get used to it for my daily driver. And idk if the new engine is reliable. So now I’m kind of waiting and gonna see if the next gen if it’s soon comes with more options

yeah you can't get the 5spd with the i-4 anymore, and can only get the v6 with the SR rwd double cab, so if you want manual you have to jump to the OR's. about half the dozen or so cars i have owned have been manuals. i wanted manual but got a good deal on this one. the first tacos came out in '95 (i drove a hilux before that), second gens in '04, and then third gens in '16, so there won't be a 4th gen taco for a long time. they just tend to add a few things here and there from year to year but nothing major. this is the 5th year for the 2GR in the lexus, so if there were major problems with it, we would know by now. the 2TR i-4 has been updated over the years but been around since the beginning of the second gens, also in the 4runner and lots of vehicles internationally, and it's based on the same cast iron block as the 3RZ which also was notorious for going several hundred thousand miles with nothing but regularly scheduled maintenance. we don't know if the 2GR will be as dependable over its lifetime as the 2TR and 1GR have been, but the most common complaint about it is the way it's tuned, which is correctable for the people who really care about that with OV tuning. other than that, the next complaint is the seats aren't adjustable enough, but the 2020's will have 10-way power adjustable seats available. i really only hear those complaints from the really complainey people who complain about everything, but the trucks sell either way and most people are very happy with them

i have another vid on here of me driving around in fog from last year. you can hear a little cough, sniffle, directional, keys jingling, and a few other sounds during the vid but no vehicle or road noise whatsoever from the cab. truck is the same as when that vid was made. it's one of the quietest vehicles i've ever had. there are OR owners who mention rear diff hum and spring squeaks, but i haven't heard of SR's having any issues.

this video explains the difference between the stripped down work truck called the utility package and the other SR ACCESS CABS, with a msrp difference of about $2k. i showed my jump seats about 5mins into the video and mentioned the utility pkg doesn't have them. that is one of the differences i listed between pkgs. not sure what you mean by "add seats". are you talking about the full bench seat with full back rest like in the double cab? double cab features aren't part of this topic of the different features in the base level access cabs. if you want B-pillar, normal back doors, and bench seat with full back rest, just get a double cab with the 5' bed. along with the V6, that configuration is probably 80% of all tacos sold. i'm sure you could get a better deal on a double cab short bed V6 than an access cab long bed V6, because double cab short bed V6 is all the baja plant makes, but access cabs are made in texas along with other taco configurations and the tundra, so supply and demand. if you move up a trim level to the SR5, you can get the double cab with 6'1" bed, of course on a longer frame. sounds like you want a DOUBLE CAB, which is not part of this topic.
