I can relate to training with sharpened katana as being a spice to life. It reminds me of going to the range and shooting guns. It's fun training yourself to become a more proficient marksman of course. But you're also always aware that you're handling and operating a deadly weapon so while also being fun to do, you take it very seriously.

I joined a Kenjutsu training in Germany, our Sensei is from Japan and it is very interesting to see both similarities and differences to your dojo. I fully agree with Yushin Sensei on the financial aspect. Seeing people so dedicated to Budo arts, and people that genuinely have a talent for teaching, I fully agree they should be able to make it their fulltime job and be able to support a family of their own.

This could be an opportunity for anyone who stays in Kyoto for a longer time (a semester? found a job in Japan??) Had the chance to take part in one training session there. And it was amazing!! So your statemen at 13:30....100% true 😀

I love that women have specific moves and slight differences in things like katana bowing. And I love that someone like me with no experience but a deep love of samurai culture and swords can still try and learn.

Very informative and enjoyable video, as usual. The Sensei seems like an extremely competent, down-to-earth and no-nonsense gentleman.

The most important item in doing Kenjutsu is the intent of both participants. Without intent, these kata are just choreography. Solo kata training needs to be supplemented with pair training in order to fully understand sword dynamics.

This art is so beautiful. I truly wish to someday learn Iaido and make enough money to study there from Yushin Sensei. I don’t know how to memorize things I learn just from watching it once but I am willing to learn how to. I am a month late to the video, but I must say this was really interesting to watch! I love the idea of combining iai, kenjutsu and tameshigiri into one.

I am testing for DAN in January in Ryushin Shouchi Ryu style with Yahagi Sensei! I owe Seki sensei and Shogo a great deal. Their videos came into my life at the exact moment it was needed to inspire me to pick up the Japanese weapon known as uchikatana. It started me down a path i never knew i'd be a part of. I am forever grateful.

The curriculum of Yu Shin Ryu is creative and interesting. In particular, Dan ranks for Tamishigeri. I am a deshi of the Itto Tenshin Ryu. I have always felt that there are many aspects to Kenjustu. Not the least of which are Iai Jutsu (kata), Kumitachi, and Tameshigeri.

While I agree with the sentiment that art will not survive unless people can dedicate themselves to it, but I also agree with the sentiment that using traditional culture to earn money risks diluting the art, promoting only what "sells", rather than the whole art. In countries where work hours are strictly regulated, there seems to be a greater possibility to practice martial arts, or training in some other art, after work. And the way it works in Sweden, at least, most dojos and other "hobby" associations can get a big part of their funds from state grants, meaning that membership costs can be kept low, and locale fees can be compensated. These two things has enabled alot of Swedes to enjoy and hand down many different arts (not trying to glorify Sweden, just talking from personal experience). One problem with doing this in Japan, as far as I know, is that Japanese people tend to work very long hours, and I have never heard of small, local dojos getting grants or stipends from the government.

I would love to take classes like that in Japan. Reminds me of when I took Isshinryu a town over from where I live in TN. Granted we didn't study bushido as vigorously as we did empty hand but learning Bo, Tonfa, and Sai has given me confidence to try other weapons, and I've always had a keen interest in the Katana.

hey shogo, could you please do a video on the Samurai Ryūha? like the itto-ryu?

the way i feel about it is that its meditation but with your entire body from the moment you start until you finish and that should be the point of every martial art. a complimentary exercise to life itself no matter what life throws at you, even if ofc you need to learn other skills also to handle life. but like he said it can also be a spice to life to make it feel more exciting. if you have trained martial arts well it can even help you with mundane but difficult tasks like a dreaded phonecall or a traffic incident and no i dont mean to do violence but to have a clear and calm mind.

My wife and I will be in Japan this October for her reunion. Hopefully we will be able to work a visit to this Dojo while we are there and we can meet in person.

one major issue with the "entrepreneur stance" in budo is the risk of being overwhelmed by the capitalist ethos and compromising the values of budo for the sake of profit. it requires a very delicate balance. i wonder if state-sponsored public policies aimed at promoting sports and cultural practices couldn't represent a way to preserve budo as a sustainable career path while keeping it away from the downsides of commercialization. i hope yushin-sensei succeeds in his efforts

The instructor's paradox as I had heard it from an old T'ai Chi Ch'uan master c. 1988: Before the student is ready to learn, the teacher will not get through to him or her; when the student finally gets it, the teacher is superfluous. My own take on this is "I cannot teach you anything, that is, I cannot make you learn, but you as a student can learn anything when you are ready to discover it." As a teacher, my job is to act as a shepherd, letting you learn while keeping you pointed in the right direction on the path.

This is a wonderful system. Traditional yet innovative. No chances your instructor makes online courses for his art for those overseas😅?

What type of katana would you use for combat training ?(with a dumny or something like that)

I don't have a katana and I don't have any dojo in India at least not in my city.But I am fascinated with iaido. I want to do It but I don't think I will get the opportunity so it's sad.but I really really like this. So to practice it I have made a plastic Katana with a piece of plastic and some tape and I watch those video of yours and I really like it. I envy you. So if it was possible for me I would definitely go to Japan and practice iaido with you. I belong from a middle class family super purchasing a Katana is almost impossible for me. They are very very expensive. So I think it will be a dream. For now atleast. 😞
