What about unmarried Amish?

In a culture that emphasizes marriage, how do single Amish people fit into the community?
My name is Erik Wesner and I'm not Amish. Back in 2004, I met the Amish while selling books. Since then, I've visited 5,000+ Amish homes & dozens of Amish communities. I run the Amish America website. More: amishamerica.com/

I worked as a school cafeteria lady in Oklahoma. One of my coworkers was a single Amish woman. She was 35, and even though all her siblings were married she said she never had any desire to marry or have children. Her family is accepting of her and she loves all her nieces and nephews.

I'm in south Florida, I was standing in line at a 7-11 looking out the window, I saw four Amish elderly gentleman standing outside waiting for the bus, wearing Amish clothes and hats. I turned to the cop waiting inline behind me and asked, Are those people Amish? Cop said, " Yes we have a few here that are elderly and single who live in a house down the street. We look in on them from time to time and make sure they're Ok" Then I asked, Well how can Amish afforded to live here in Boca Raton, Florida, because house's are pretty expensive? Cop replied, " Evidently a lady lived there who was born from Amish country up north, but lived outside the Amish church. When she passed away she Willed, her expensive house to the Amish church she grew up in. So the church kept the house and sends down their elderly members to live there and get them to warmer temperatures." I thought that was pretty smart of the Amish church to do that. The house is only going up in value, they have free lodging for their elderly, close to hospitals and cops stopping by to check on them.

I wish I can marry one of those Amish girls and have a lot of kids! I grew up in a Serbian farming village growing up and can relate to a lot of their daily living! I feel like I'de be the happiest man alive, I like their values and way of life! I feel like I would relive the happy memories of my childhood growing up next to oil lamps and an old wood stove but I can share my cozy home with an Amish girl! 😊

As a single woman myself, I love the phrase, “leftover blessing”. Decades ago, I met two precious single ladies who lived together and they said they were “unclaimed treasures “.

I was raised in a similar community to the Amish and it was not unusual for a Sister or Brother who had never married to become a wife or husband in their later years to a widowed Brother or Sister. In fact, I truly believe that if my grandfather had not married his second wife he would not have had the almost 25 years more that he did. I consider her a blessing to our family and will be telling her so if I get to heaven!

Very interesting. I sold building materials to the Amish (& Mennonites) for 20 years & it never once occurred to me that they had older unmarried people in their communities too. Just assumed the Amish had a specific, special & dedicated way of finding spouses. Because if not, their culture might fade away.

When I was very young my parents sent us to Amish babysitters. They were two single women past the age where Amish normally marry. Their single brother also lived there. I think all three did eventually marry.

I just hope that the unmarried Amish are at least treated with respect and dignity by the Amish community in general.

I love the idea of taking my Christianity very seriously but I would FAIL as an Amish - for numerous reasons.

Well, I always say the apostle Paul said that single people are or can be more happier. He fully supported single women saying they can be happier devoting their energy to the Lord without the cares of a husband. So, either way is good and people should support what an individual wishes.

After meeting my Amish friend(s) from Middlefield, on Lake Pymatuning last June, I had wondered about this particular subject. Both Matt and his brother were unmarried. Matt was 27 or 28 and still living with his parents, but both him and his next younger brother (also unmarried) had jobs and were contributing family members. It appeared that Matt got his heart broken by his girlfriend (or fiance) about ten years back and either never got over it or just hadn't met anyone new since. He didn't go into details and I wasn't going to pry. It appeared that he takes an active roll in his family because I seen him help with his younger sibblings and he has a bunch of them.

Personally, I don’t like the terms, “unclaimed” or “leftover.” As a traditional Catholic who is not called to be a nun, I am neither unclaimed nor leftover! I am claimed by Our Lord Jesus Christ and set aside for conscription to Our Lady to emulate her purity and charity in all my ways.

Randomly stumbling on this after accidently tripping over a cache of Amish pulp romance novels. Yes they exist, and yes its as nutty a genre as you might imagine. Lots of books about "I fell in love with a Mennonite, but my Amish parents disapprove!" plots lol

I found a series of mystery books that take place in the Ohio community. The main character takes over her aunt's Amish qulit shop after she passes away. The books have another main character who's a single man. His fiance had passed away and he hasn't met anyone else yet. Although he is attracted to the lady main character, she likes him as a friend, but isn't interested in living the Amish lifestyle herself. Her aunt had married into the Amish very successfully. She is accepted by the Amish community partly because of her aunt and becomes an advocate for them. They're fun to read, partly because of a set of identical twin Amish boys who cause havoc on a regular basis. And a goat that keeps causing trouble too. I don't know if a man would be interested in reading the books or not, they're written by a lady and geared towards women.

Would love to hear about or see photos of what a wedding celebration is like in the Amish Community. What does the Bride wear? Is there a special menu? I imagine with a lot of children you wouldn’t be boastful or wasteful of money just on one day however maybe there are special traditions. Where does the young newlyweds live? I’ve never seen apartments in the Amish community but can’t imagine they all can afford homes right away. What jobs do they have if they don’t have a farm yet and is there only one son who can inherit the farm or is it shared? Thank You!

Very interesting. I never knew that any Amish person could be single. Hey 👋🏾 from Ohio. I use to go down to Amish county years ago when I lived in Wooster, Ohio. I had a professor who became a writer of Amish mysteries, his name is Dr Paul Gaus. Have you heard of him? Anyway, I’ve had so many questions about Amish life but I’ve never been able to ask the Amish because I didn’t want to offend so thanks so much for your KZread.

Why does the Amish act shy around me when I go to Amish country in Ohio I like going to the thrift stores there and I always say hi to the Amish people that are in there and and most of them don't respond back that seems very odd and rude to me thanks and keep the great information about the Amish coming 🙂
