Best wishes to the Ginger guy for his operation. He was spot on with his idea to dig the trenches, if the ground is so compacted the water will not drain you need to give it somewhere to go where it can drain. Olly Blogs and Joe Seels are both doing similar things this weekend. Ok so it makes a mess but the ground will drain faster and you will be able to get the machines on it to harrow and roll it for re-seeding. Good for the worms and good for the grass. 👍.

From the aerial video, it seems like some of the biggest puddles are not that far from the main drainage ditch. It would not take much with a bulldozer to make a swale from each of those puddles to the main ditch. Then the surface water would run away much better. If your ground is compacted as much as you said, the swales could be a good solution. Also, I was impressed with the depth of the top soil - almost 3 feet in some places. In the US, we are lucky to have 4 to 6 inches of topsoil. That also means that if you do swales, you can still easily plant grass on top without having to move topsoil back over.

I agree with you dad in that the land he drained literally had no green like the rest of the field. If he makes it out you ought to purchase an engineered drainage plan that he'd admire to dream about existing one day. Though you may need to hire someone to do it before he starts digging again.

Really interesting video. The basic problem seems as your dad says, not to be the field drains but the main streams which take the water from the whole district. They get held back by the tides because you are so close to the coast and the fresh water just cannot get away. Has there ever been any plans to dam those tidal waterways so that no water backs upstream on high tides, but flows out on low water. My family have this in their farms in South Glos and North Somerset and it works well - but getting co-operation for such an expensive project ain't easy. Meanwhile pray for a drought, and good luck to your Dad.!
