Tommy, thank you so much for reacting to my suggestion! This hit me as well, because I'm gay, as is Brandi Carlile, and I was picked on. She touched my soul with this beautiful, empowering song! She has a beautiful voice and she lives her life, with her wife and two daughters, to help empower others! You have an amazing soul and you remind me of her with this channel and your words of encouragement. You too are loved! ❤

Don't apologize for feeling out loud. That's what we weren't allowed to do before, so it's basically a requirement now. Brandi lives the words of her songs. She saw a young gay boy tugging on his shirt when he was uncomfortable in a crowd and that prompted her to write the song. Later, when he found out it was about him, it changed his life and he came out of his shell. This song has prevented many young people from committing suicide. Brandi said of all the effects of this song has had on her career, the thing she cares about is helping that boy. Check out her other music - it's all empowering, and also fun, and rocking, and story-telling, and happiness. Her concerts are love fests.

I think that was one of the most beautiful, and meaningful songs that you have ever reacted to on this channel, Tommy. It hit my heart so hard. I got goosebumps, and I don't get goosebumps often or easily. I am so glad that you reacted to this.

BC is my favorite band of all time. Has been for many years. I grew up with her, in a sense. The songs they write, the way they perform them, the way they live their lives. Beautiful perfection, in all the good ways. I love watching reactions to them, (I wish one of you would do another one, other than The Joke. 😁Granted it’s the best in many ways. But they have more. A lot more that will make you think about yourself, your life, your impact, your family and things you care about. I want to see reactions to more of their great stuff! All that being said, your reaction was surprising, but then, not so much cuz I know her impact. It is a beautiful thing to see a grown man cry. There I said it❤️ Listen to their albums The Story - The Story is also a song (huge song like The Joke, different message, but they seriously kick ass performing it.) And their newest In These Silent Days Just lay on your bed and listen. It will change you. In good ways. Truth is, listening to you, I related to what you said. A lot. I’m wishing you peace and a big, long, all encompassing HUG! Wait - one more album By The Way I Forgive You lol

I have said many times. I think this is one of the most important songs ever done. The message hits like a brick to the face, and Brandi's voice and passion really makes it hit even harder.

I appreciate your raw, heartfelt reaction to this musical masterpiece. I’ve heard it countless times and my eyes well up with tears every time. Everyone MUST watch her sing this during the 2019 Grammys. I watched it live on TV and I had not heard of Brandi. She brought the house down. I was blown away. I instantly became a fan of hers. She is incredible. P.S. Thank you for sharing. You are courageous and I am proud of you too. 👍

Wow, this song hit me very hard. Thank you for sharing this beautiful and moving song, and for sharing your story. Unfortunately, as children we don't understand yet who of those around us are healthy and who are not. We trusted them to give us solid guidance but as we grew older and our eyes were opened as to how the world works and how people really are we realize that a lot of damage has been done. All we can do is pick up the pieces, discard the garbage, and move forward with the wisdom that we have gained.

Beautiful song.. voice.. message. It takes a long time, sometimes a lifetime, to realize you are good enough, the way u are. I too was the little boy, the quiet one, the weirdo. Told I needed to be different, told i needed to "come out of my shell".. Apologies because "he's shy".. that's messed up. U apologize when you're wrong.. I wasn't made wrong. Anyway, b4v this turns into therapy 101, TY for this song, this sentiment. I'll carry it for awhile for sure. ❤ and ✌️.

Oh wow don't apologize for your beautiful, heartfelt reaction. Your willingness to share puts love out into the universe, and you just never know who will come across this and get your message of acceptance and hope right when they need it... causes a ripple that is all good. I'm proud of you too ❤ Saw her describe this song on Howard Stern as an anthem, a message of encouragement in these times when people are so polarized that love has already conquered, and that it's the Way.

Thank you for sharing, I subbed halfway through when I saw your response as it played. The Human condition is a complicated thing. Growing up in the sixties, I saw and felt the power of music. As well as how we perceive things that we experience. Great music does not have to have a certain emotion to be felt. But when its message is directed towards a goal, it can be powerful. Congratulations for rising above the distractions and demons. And remember, "There are many here among us. Who feel that life is but a joke". (Bob Dylan). Peace & Love

Very beautiful song, and powerful indeed. Teenage me would have needed to hear this song 1000 times, although i kinda knew "the joke's on them" somewhere deep inside, but at that age it's so easy to get caught up in the whole "what does everyone else think"- kind of mindset regardless. One of those songs that goes straight into the heart.

oh that voice....and a touching video. sadness writes the most beautiful and touching vocals. that was really a good song. i have never heard of this lady before but i'm very glad i have watched your reaction! i had to watch twice, with reading the lyrics along. it reminded me pretty much of the situation after my accident and the death of my twin sister when i got really a lot of attention by many people - and quiet the opposite when a lot of people tried to push me into the dirt, who bullied me, who took my cloth during sports and so on. but they couldn't break me and now i'm shining. judgement. my older son is so sensitive for judgements through others and it's such a hard job to tell him he's allright just the way he is. and there is no reason to change his personality because that makes him the exactly person i love so much. You′re feeling nervous, aren't you, boy? With your quiet voice and impeccable style Don′t ever let them steal your joy And your gentle ways To keep 'em from running wild They can kick dirt in your face Dress you down, and tell you that your place Is in the middle, when they hate the way you shine I see you tugging on your shirt Trying to hide inside of it And hide how much it hurts Let 'em laugh while they can Let ′em spin, let ′em scatter in the wind I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends And the joke′s on them You get discouraged, don't you, girl? It′s your brother's world for a while longer We gotta dance with the devil on a river To beat the stream Call it living the dream, call it kicking the ladder They come to kick dirt in your face To call you weak and then displace you After carrying your baby on your back across the desert I saw your eyes behind your hair And you′re looking tired, but you don't look scared Let 'em laugh while they can Let ′em spin, let ′em scatter in the wind I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends And the joke′s on them Let 'em laugh while they can Let ′em spin, let 'em scatter in the wind I have been to the movies, I′ve seen how it ends And the joke's on them Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh...

regarding your comment at the end: brimheim, can't hate yourself into a different shape. this song has very very fitting lyrics to this song here You’ve never asked about my hands why I always clench all things that are broken like a heart in pieces or a shard of glass, I hold it tight until it cuts and I feel right If I could just shave off another piece of myself Would you Watch me fall apart Right in front of your eyes ‘cause I can’t hate myself Into a different shape And fall apart Right in front of your eyes I can’t hate myself Into a different shape Remember the birthday dinner for your prettiest friend I’ve never tried harder to not be myself So yet again my fist it squeezed shattered glass, but you don’t see The cut is shaped like her, it bleeds stronger, better, more complete But I’ll never be like her If I could just shave off another piece of myself Would you Watch me fall apart Right in front of your eyes ‘cause I can’t hate myself Into a different shape And fall apart Right in front of your eyes I can’t hate myself Into a different shape fall apart Right in front of your eyes ‘cause I can’t hate myself Into a different shape And fall apart Right in front of your eyes I can’t hate myself Into a different shape Watch me fall apart ‘Cause I won’t hate myself

Much love and many hugs Tommy❤ I relate so much to this as well. I had absolutely no idea what or who I was for such a long time. And I felt like compliments and positive comments were so shallow and false, they were things that people just said to say something. But a hateful or spiteful comments - that in my mind was more valuable because it came from some kind of emotion or reaction to me as a person. So I (like an idiot) thought that those comments were the ones I had to shape myself after, to form around those comments so that the hateful people didn't feel like it was a problem in me anymore. I welcomed those comments even though they hurt so much. I thought they would make me a better person. But instead it predictably made me always feel like there was always some perceived flaw to fix. So it felt like everything I tried to do was a constant failure. It made me loathe myself for so many years. Eventually I realized that no matter how much I change myself, those comments from the same people will never change. So I slowly started the process of not listening to them. Old habits die hard, but I broke free eventually. And I am a better and healthier person from it🙂
