Our group got to watch a group of 11 humpback whales bubble net feeding on a whale watching tour in Juneau, Alaska, in August 2016. It was awesome! If the video says "This is the only place where they feed this way," then this must have been shot there. Our tour guide said that this is a learned behavior, and only 400 of the 10,000 living humpback whales have learned it so far. They did this about every 10 minutes for the hour we were there.

Now comes the REALLY important question... Is this the same herd of whales that were doing this in Alaska or have other herds learned this behavior in the last seven years since the first recorded incident! I mean if these whales are intelligent enough to learn from each other through time and space THAT fast it is truly amazing! Of course I find it amazing when I think about a creature as tiny as a whale swimming the mighty oceans from Alaska clean down to Australia and back amazing in itself! And yes when you think of the size of the worlds Oceans Whales are actually tiny!

@@oldogre5999 lol, for some reason they were bubble fishing in very warm tropical waters, I think our lot are a bit spoiled and may not enjoy bubble fishing in colder waters, at the very least they haven’t been spotted doing it there, but yeah in 10 years time...... I don’t doubt they could do just about anything 😉 Hope you had a great day 🙃Marianne

I know that I am quite a bit more than two years late, but having gone to Alaska myself recently and being able to to witness and record this magnificent display of teamwork that these whales display is absolutely breathtaking. The amount of skill that these whales need to have in order to work cohesively in this team is simply astonishing. Consider yourself lucky if you ever get to see this happen in person.

Who are the ignorant jerks who gave a thumbs down? By the way this only happens in Alaska, and only a small population feeds like this,it’s a learned feeding method, passed on, I have been lucky enough to see this many times as a guide on whale watching trips here in Southeast Alaska, nothing like it,simple!!!

Here the humpback demonstrate a fishing method humans could use which is ecologicaly friendly. No dolphins get caught in the net. The true genius of this team work is how the whales have collaborated to put on a demonstrative show to the BBC, so that the idea can be picked up by humans... "hay why don't we try this method and abandon the nets!"
