WGN Exclusive: Sammy Sosa talks life, relationship with Ricketts and reconnecting with the Cubs

There are certain Chicago teams who are synonymous with certain athletes. The Bears can't be mentioned in the same breath without Walter Payton, the Blackhawks without Patrick Kane...the Cubs without Sammy Sosa.
A legendary baseball player on the North Side and one of baseball's all-time great sluggers sat down with WGN's Jarrett Payton Friday in what was Sosa's first return to Chicago since 2007, when he and the Texas Rangers travelled to Chicago to play the White Sox from April 17-19, nearly 17 years ago.

Did he cork his bat? YES Did he take PED's? Maybe Did he play his boombox too loud in the Clubhouse? For Sure. I have been a Cub fan my entire life and Sammy Sosa's tenure with the Cubs was the most exciting, entertaining period in modern Cubs history with the exception of the 2016 Championship season. Personally, I have witnessed his love for all children and how he treats people. He is a good man. To Tom Ricketts, Please settle the stalemate, end the conflict, and embrace this guy back into the fold. He deserves to be in the Cubs Hall of Fame for sure as well as Cooperstown.

Why don't I see that same case against Mark M? Sammy Sosa was a great players. raised a fan base that had been dormant for many years. I bring joy to the stadium and its surroundings. Sammy Sosa is the reason I and so many others are baseball fans. Cubs org should be welcoming him back with open arms for all he did for Chicago with bringing young fans into the game. Where would this franchise be without him? How much money did his name generate for the team in the late 90s and early 00s? Listening to him speak about how much he loves the fans just makes it that much more necessary that Cubs welcome him back. How many Sosa jerseys would they sell if they welcomed him back to the team in some capacity? He could join Marquee as a personality or just have him roam the home games mingling with the fans, which i think would provide a great experience as well. With all of the revenue generating actions this team has taken in recent years, i would think they would want to take this easy win to generate even more money.

What they achieved will never be forgotten, no matter the criticism, they rescued baseball, they gave a new twist to baseball and to the new generations that have since emerged as baseball stars, they deserve to be in the hall of fame, but ironically, they were used to save baseball, and then those hypocrites who used them and run baseball made them infamous.

Love him or hate him, he played his butt off, produced and earned every dollar the Cubs paid him, which is a rarity.

It was called the steroid era for a reason. There were A LOT of players doing the same thing with worse results. MLB owners made a lot of money on the backs of these players and let them take the blame.

All the guy has to do is admit he used PED's and I believe most fans would look past his transgressions. He may be there in his heart but he can't say it yet. One day, I hope he makes the right decision.

Why do we allow cheating and a guy who walks out of his team and fans? Ryne said it and called him out during HOF speech

There are hardly any fans that would say they hate Sammy Sosa in Chicago! Some big wigs don't want him back and of course they get their way.

Good Sunday morning/afternoon to you and an outstanding video post. First, an excellent interview by Mr. Jarred Payton. Second, a great interview get. I appreciate that Sammy Sosa at least faced up to the questions asked here. Now here's to where I am 75% in favor of the interview and 25% opposed. With the latter, he still did this wrong in baseball and unfortunately he's still getting punished for it. To which I say he has himself to blame for that. Having said that, I'm glad that he doesn't bathe himself in guilt. Which goes back to the 75% reason I am on his side (the former). If he benefited from alleged use of steroids in baseball and had a part in the 1998 Home Run chase. So too did Major League Baseball who are not clean from this either. Sammy Sosa's saving grace with me is the complicity of Major League Baseball and I'm going to dare say "White media" who were all benefactors of he (Sosa) and Mark McGwire's successes in baseball. Baseball that had to recover from going on strike in the mid 1990s and suffered from a public relations nightmare having done so. So in short, Major League Baseball has a profound history of black marks. From the Gentleman's Agreement, to the crack cocaine epidemic which came before the steroid era. Something that I am also glad about and this is what hurts Sosa is at least baseball is cracking down on cheating and illegal substances across the board. Those who cheated the game through gambling or drug use are getting only what they can expect. True, the numbers are the numbers. The question after that is how did one get to those achievements. I was a fan of Sammy Sosa when he was with the Chicago White Sox. Playing with starts like Ozzie Guillen, Steve Lyons, Harold Baines, Carlton Fisk, Bobby Thigpen and Robin Ventura. Keeping it Chicago, so I am well aware of Sosa's career in baseball. I hope that he continues to appear and see the fans not just in Chicago, IL USA. Just as well across America. ⚾

That was an embarrassment not only on Sammy's part but Peyton's as well. Jared listen to Howard Stern next time you can talk to an interview especially with someone that many would love to have one-on-one one on one for 20 minutes. My daughter throws softballs gentler than that. Corked bats steroids leaving the games early pissing off his teammates in the small clubhouse in the small clubhouse. Worst of all all that was an endorsement to get him into the Hall of Fame. You said you speak for all Cub fans with all due respect and I do respect you but you don't speak for me
