WET vs DRY INKS | In-Depth Discussion & Tips for telling them apart!

Ойындар

Hello pen friends! So stick with me here, I decided to put 5 discussion points into one video, but I have timestamps for you should you choose to just get to the part where I discuss properties of dry vs wet inks! I wanted to make a comprehensive video that discusses the background and physics behind inks and ink flow in fountain pens, so I hope that part is fruitful for those of you who may be new to fountain pens or are just curious! Who knows, you might find something new in the first 20 minutes with all the jargon on the physics of Fountain Pens.
Anyways, I am not an expert with inks by any means, but my hopes are that I am able to share my experiences and understanding of inks with you guys through this video and invite discussions among us! Please feel free to chime in on your take and understanding of inks in the comments section so we can all have a fruitful conversation around this topic of wet and dry inks! I may be off on some parts of the information I share in the video, and if I am, by all means, point them out for me! But be kind!! ♥ We're here to help each other learn and grow from our experiences as a whole community!
As always, thank you so much for watching and supporting my channel! Please consider subscribing if you have not subbed yet to my channel and hit that lovely LIKE button to show your support for the work that goes into these videos! But of course, just remember to like if you enjoyed or learned something from the video! (AND hit the THUMBS UP button for that beautiful Aurora Volterra pen!)

    Haha, Hi Kan-zee! After 16 years, here I am, finally getting 1k sub, and teaching friends about fountain pens, right? XD I'm happy the information was fairly easy to absorb! There's a lot of bigger fountain pen channels that review pens and inks and they have to be consistent in doing that and yeah, not always will they make a video to define all these specific terms, but that's understandable. I'm happy you appreciate and enjoy my style haha I like to share pens and inks that I personally like and able to get a hand on - so I may not have more of the popular pens that everyone likes. Unfortunately I'm not big enough to get free pens to review yet, so all you see are my collection only. Thank you so much for watching and sharing your silly fun spirit with the fountain pen community. I appreciate your comments! Please look forward to more videos!

    Haha, thanks, Cate! I wasn't amazing at physics in high school, but I had an awesome teacher, so it helped a bit with learning the material. It was in college that it got serious and I really knew I was bad at it. Even though I've been using fountain pens for a bazillion years, I didn't know there was wet & dry inks until I bought a TWSBI Eco glow green and a bottle of Sailor Ink Studio 167 to match it. Even though it has a stub nib, I could barely get it to write! I switched to my usual drawing ink, De Atramentis Document (my custom brown/grey blend), and it was much better. Thanks for puzzling through all this for us!

    Thanks for watching, Ina! ♥Glad to be of service xD And share what I know! 167 looks very light, so I can definitely assume that ink is dry. That really sucks that even the stub was having a hard time. My TWSBI Ecos have done well with shimmers, but I haven't used them with pale, super-dry flowing inks yet.

    As a chemical engineer, I would say you did pretty well at explaining these concepts overall! Surface tension is actually better with stronger cohesion though (I think you said adhesion), meaning it takes more intermolecular force to disrupt the H-bonds between water molecules. Your thought process was correct though!

    Ooo!! I always am impressed with those who are great at physical sciences and jobs in those fields. When I was able to understand chemistry, biology, and physics back then, there were very interesting things to learn! So I tried my best to understand adhesion/cohesion, but it still confuses me just a bit when applying it to fountain pens/inks. But thank you so much for clarifying cohesion - I was able to make sense of that! XD Meaning greater cohesive forces within an ink increases surface tension, and slightly slower ink flow.

    thank you very much for the deep dive on ink properties and ink swatch demos! it was super helpful to hear your approach to pairing inks and pens, since most of this information is usually conveyed with a “it depends, try it out” and rarely this much detail on how inks behave i’ve realized i lean towards dual shader/less saturated inks for the visuals but go back to darker/saturated inks for the smoothness of writing experience, so it would be nice if dustier inks also had the richness of the latter, but i figure it’s not a likely combination unless i experiment with additives like white lightning :’) i also feel like online reviews/shop listings categorize ink flow very differently from me and i'm always left feeling confused, so i guess in the end we must try every ink to make sure we dont need a full bottle of it hahaha :'D

After many trials and errors of the "it depends" kinda deal, I decided I don't want to suffer through combinations that aren't fit for me, so I swap inks out the moment it doesn't feel great and go on to find another of my pens better suited for the lovely dusty ink I want to use (or put another ink that will make the current pen feel great). It really improves my quality of life experiences with fountain pens ^_^ I, too, love the visuals and beauty of the dusty and soft colors. Saturated inks that get too dark become boring for me, so I look hard for semi-saturated soft/dusty inks. Your explanation on dry inks exhibiting more shading makes total sense to me. I’ve tried both Lamy Blue and Lamy Turquoise (both are dry), and they exhibit significant more shading than my Pilot Iroshizuku inks (Yama Budo, Asa Gao and Murasaki Shikibu). Sailor Shikiori Sakura Mori and Manyo Sakura also both write drier than Pilot Iroshizuku Hana Ikada, despite all three being orangey-dusty pinks. Great video!

  • @KenchanKrafts

    @KenchanKrafts

    2 ай бұрын

    Yeah, I find the combination of dry inks with wet pens and wet inks with dry pens to have given me the most shading out of inks. I put Pilot Yu-yake in my Sailor 14k MF, and while it did flow beautifully, it didn't gush or anything and I got so much beautiful little shading (from a yellow to orange and deep orange red), but then I would put Yu-yake into my wet gold Leonardo and I saw no shading (which was sad since I love how Yu-yake can shade). So if a wet ink can shade, I tend to put it in a dry pen to see the shading while lubricating the dry pen. ^_^ Thanks for sharing your experiences with those inks. I did hear that Lamy inks tend to be dry - I assume it's because they try to make it for their wetter Lamy 2000 pen or other wet pens they make. Thanks for watching! :)

    Differences in inks is something Ive discovered during my fountain pen journey but that you very much for your detailed explanation. I used to buy inks just for their colors. I found a match made in heaven: Leonardo Angels Skin with Taccia Lip Color Pink Beige. But it is so wet I can not write with it. Nowadays I tend to buy inks and pens from the same company for the best writing experience. But I will experiment now with Sailor Manyo for sure :)

  • @KenchanKrafts

    @KenchanKrafts

    Searching for the perfect color in a different brand that may have the property you want is always a fun and challenging one. That Leonardo Angel skin is a gold nib only, I think, so it would definitely be giving you a very wet experience. Sailor Manyo inks are all quite dry overall (the manyo line is chromashading mostly and the shikiori line has more of the standard wet flowing inks). I find that even sometimes, dry inks can feel draggy or bad in my wet pens at first, but it can become more smooth and buttery after a bit. And then I just have pens like the Pelikan M1000 that I cannot find a dry enough ink to tame it yet. Thanks for watching and I hope your experiments bear wonderful inky fruits! XD

    I bought some white lightning because I had some ink in a LAMY that just was not working. And of course, when you spend good money on ink, you don’t want to throw it out. One of my favorite colors, Teranishi opera rose seems to be very dry in the pens I have tried.

  • @KenchanKrafts

    @KenchanKrafts

    Ай бұрын

    Hi Joi, yes teranishi opera rose is a dusty pink/peachy brown color that are like many other dusty pinks that have a dry flow in order to acquire that color. I’ve never had great flow with any of them (goshiyama ochre, Rouille dancre, etc). Remember to use very little amount of white lightening based on how much ink you’re putting it into. White lighting will make your ink very very watery and lose some shading qualities if too much white lighting was used :) but I think it will save your Lamy inks since those are pretty saturated.

  • @inknotes-jess
    @inknotes-jess2 ай бұрын

    This is super helpful! I was wondering the property of the inks and why certain inks do certain things. Now I will be less clueless with my inks. Adding some other knowledge I obtained recently, I have some basic conclusions: 1. Shading inks have different properties of colors and would dry in different speeds, thus giving out different colors where the ink is pooling. In general the shading inks would be dry. 2. Inks with less shading and more opaque are wetter when writing, which makes them easier to flow in the pen and smoother when writing with finer nibs. 3. Document/archival inks are among the wetter inks, mainly due to the ingredients that make them not water soluble. As a result, the archival inks appear matte and opaque, sometimes hard to dry and prone to bleed through. These are just a few rule-of-thumbs I learned as a beginner. Thank you again for the video and I think I will have less problems with my inks in the future!🎉

  • @KenchanKrafts

    @KenchanKrafts

    2 ай бұрын

    I agree with your observations 1 and 2! I've never used archival/document inks before, but I assume those are pigmented inks that have particles that aren't so water-soluble. I read that those inks have additional things to make the ink flow better, otherwise, it would not flow well at all! XD So I think your 3rd rule of thumb observation is very interesting to me! I thought archival inks would write wet and dry faster (since they're water resistant), but it makes a lot of sense that if they're wet flowing, they would dry slower. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with inks, Jess! I appreciate you for watching and being part of this ink conversation/discussion!!

  • @inknotes-jess

    @inknotes-jess

    2 ай бұрын

    @@KenchanKraftsThat makes a lot of sense. It not necessarily the waterproof additives contributing to the wetness of archival inks, but the additives helping the lubrication and ink flows make those inks wet. I only have two waterproof inks and both of them appear matte and have quite a bit of bleed though. That’s kinda how I drawn the conclusion.

    It also depends on the paper you are using and where you are in the world some papers are very slick they might have a coating on them like clairefontaine or they might be very natural like ayush and if you are at a higher dryer elevation the ink will flow differently than if you are down by the ocean or in a more humid environment. I do ink reviews on my channel almonst every day and I can tell you that there are such things as stubborn inks and white lightning might help but if you dont want to buy white lightning all it needs is something to make the water wetter which is surfactant dish soap.. just a tooth pick dipped in and into the cartridge Never dip it into a vile or a bottle because you might Ruin the sample/bottle because on another day it may behave completely different with a different pen in a different humidity or environment but if you dip tooth pick into the pen if it starts blooping out of the pen uncontrollably than you can flush the pen and try again but if you put it into the vile or bottle and its ruined youve waisted that money on that bottle and the only use for it would be paint brush or perhaps brush pen or dip nib :) Hope that helps

    One of the other things that happens when you add White Lightning to a ink is it WILL tend to bleed through/feather Most papers so that is something to consider.

    Wow, so much Information and effort you put into this video! Of course I noticed, when the writing experience isn’t great but now I can find the reason easier ☺️. And I’m not forgiving anymore. When I want to use a special ink in a pen and it doesn’t work out (and it’s not the pen) I will not use that ink anymore. Live‘s too short to hold on to picky inks! There are a lot alternatives out there. With pens it’s of course different 😅

    XD I'm a little more forgiving, I set the ink to the side until I feel like wanting to put them into a pen I know writes super wet (which is usually a Benu, Pelikan, or Gold Nib Leonardo). I find that BENUs write so well with dry inks - if you don't have one already, you should try your dry inks in them (or one that is problematic before they go down the drain haha). Pens are always a different case than inks ;) we gotta give them more chances if we truly love the way the pen looks. But if the pen doesn't feel comfortable to write with, it's gotta go for me. Thank you so much for watching this video :D I definitely poured my heart out into arranging this piece of my experience and knowledge. Portions of the production of this video was poorly done (I zoomed in too much on the last section), so my hands were distracting to a lot of people! I wished I didn't do that, otherwise, this video as a whole would have been really great! xD But I'm happy hearing you soaked the info and appreciated it!

    @@KenchanKrafts haha, I don’t mean to throw the ink away immediately:) F ex somehow I want to love Kiri-Same but I put it in 2 pens , wrote 1 page and then cleaned the pen. I just don’t like grey. I have a Benu with Ancient Copper in it and it’s great! You’re right about the feel. Like I mentioned I get easily pain in my fingertips and sadly a few great pens needed to be retired because of that. I try them from time to time and -no, still hurting me. Your hands didn’t distract me at all. I‘m more sensitive to voices , talking too fast or excited. Your talking is very calming and I can focus on what you said 👌

    i think people should consider 4 properties of the ink not just two: Wet ( fluid ink ) , Viscous ( jelly ink ) , dry ( feedbacky writing ) and smooth ( lubricated writing ) Any ink will have a combination of these four properties, showing one for the first two and one of the last two ex. Iroshizuku inks are mostly WET and DRY

    Hahaha! OMG I just can’t with your profile picture, I loved Kumamon, that digimon is so cute! Anyways, back on track, I agree that pilot inks are so unique in that they flow so nicely in every pen but yet they sometimes dry fast or can feel a bit dry. I’ve made 2 iroshizuku mixes and one of them seemed dry the other very wet. I’ll need to experiment on them some more. But do you mean they are dry as in dry flow or fast dry time? I’m assuming dry flow - which one has been dry for you? I’m curious because I have just figured them all to be wet since I’ve not had any issues with them particularly except for my one twsbi!

    @@HyTeddyBear hmm very interesting! Yes, I find Diamine firefly to be quite viscous compared to regular non shimmer inks, and that ink flows like a beautiful stream in all my pens. For a shimmer ink it doesn’t clog or flow slowly. Very lovely. Definitely, these other properties make the world of inks even more interesting.

I've been using Troublemakers in it since they're soooooo dry, but this one looks like it might have them beat.😉 Excellent intro to fountain pen terminology, Lao! That nib feed combo was a wet one and I got lucky with that to pair with morningside mint, which is quite legible with a good wet pen. Thank you for bookmarking my video XD ahhh! hi, hello, the fabled dry ink lover here ^^ i've noticed that the way i do swatches, with the glass ball end of a cocktail stirrer, inks that are wet are some of the most annoying to swatch haha! the ink flows off of the ball so quickly its hard to spread it out, whereas the dryer inks tend to take longer to come off of it. also, a different observation, some of the really dry inks will almost suck themselves into the middle of the swatch, creating a darker area in the middle of the swatch rather than the end which definitely is to do with surface tension/cohesion. even dryer inks inside twsbi's kind of wobble around in the barrel rather than flowing how you would expect. sorry to make this an even longer comment, but i also just wanted to say its really exciting to me to see someone talk about the physics of how this stuff connects! i love detailed videos like this ^^

I am so happy you enjoyed and am overjoyed with the appreciation you are showing towards this long video!! I definitely had a great time researching and understanding the physics behind how this all works alongside my less physics-induced experiences with pens and inks. It really helps to piece the inner workings of this hobby together! I love long comments! Makes great conversations!! Thank you for sharing your own experiences of wet and dry inks. Those observations do align pretty similarly with my own observations, even though you used different methods. That's so awesome! ^_^

    I am left handed and have always used ball-point pens. Even then, I find that ink transfers to the pinkie-side of my middle and ring fingers with many pens and that plain old disposable clear-sided pens are the least smudging of all. I'd love to try using a fountain pen to improve my handwriting (which had become pretty bad). My writing is also quite small and I naturally use a pushing action directly from left to right, rather than 'hooking' my hand. Do you have any suggestions as to a reasonably-priced pen and nib, with a suitable ink, for me to experiment? With many thanks from Oxford, UK.

  • @KenchanKrafts

    @KenchanKrafts

    Hey William! Thank you so much for watching and sharing your experience with writing! I don't have much experience with left-handed writing, but I've seen some of my friends write and I find the way they write to be so fascinating, but yet, also painful to watch thinking about how hard it must have been to adjust yourself to writing in that way. I've seen people shift their papers and write from top to bottom - so many different ways to make it work for them! My pen and ink suggestions for you would be Pilot Explorer or Metropolitan ($25 USD) or the Prera for double the price. You can also try Platinum Preppy or Plaisirs. Those are great and affordably priced. Go for Fine in any of these. If you want a German nib, you can try TWSBI Eco in an EF size. Pelikan 4001 Black or any Pelikan 4000 series inks are dry and should help with fast drying for you! If you want a bit wetter and smooth writing feel, go for Lamy black or any lamy inks, they are just slightly less dry than the Pelikan inks. The smoothest writing ink for you will be any Iroshizuku ink - they should also dry quite fast from these pen/nib selections I've shared. Tsuki-yo is a great blue/black ink from that line that dries fast with a drier pen. Let me know if you have any other questions! I'm happy to help out any time :)

    Hello there, Arclite! Yes, Pelikans are wetter than Lamy from my experience. Schmidt and Bock nibs tend to write wetter in general, too, which are 2 of the 3 German-made nibs that are distributed to most brands. Jowo nibs seem to write a bit on the average to dry side, depending on the brand and how they tune the nibs. But I found that JOWO Gold nibs write pretty wet, especially when the brand (Leonardo) pairs their gold nibs with ebonite feeds.
