Medium or Fine? Pilot Custom 823 Review & Nib Line Width Comparisons

Ойындар

In this video, I share my review of the Pilot Custom 823 and compare them with other pens with similar nib widths for comparison. You can scroll to any section with my timestamps if you'd just like to see specific parts. If you want to skip the review and head straight to the line writing and comparison, jump to 14:30 in the video.
Disclaimer: I am no expert with fountain pens - I'm still learning as I continue to collect and use these wonderful pens! This video isn't intended to show exact line widths but to visually see them next to each other to get a general feel for how other pens compare together. For the inks used, my Pilot Custom 823 Amber Medium was inked with Ferris Wheel Press Steeped Umber (an average flowing and well-behaved ink) and the Pilot C823 Smoke Fine was inked with Ku-Jaku (a wet flowing ink).
823 Maintenance & Warranty: If you purchased an 823 with a warranty, do not disassemble the pen at any time during this period. You can get some tips on maintenance and warranty information with Goulet Pen Company here: • Why You Shouldn't Disa...
Once your warranty is over, however, you can do whatever you can to maintain your pen. Regarding the piston rod lubrication I mentioned in the video, you can apply silicon grease to the piston rod when you pull it up from the back without disassembly, however, this pen is meant to last years without needing this bit of maintenance early on! (Unless you're changing inks and cleaning it a lot). Here's another good video to take a look at for the 823 maintenance: • Pilot Custom 823: How ...
About Japanese Nibs Vs. Western nib sizes - Japanese nibs tend to be ground thinner than western nibs of the same nib size. Therefore, if you like a western medium, in most cases you'll want to go 1 size up to match your preferences of a western medium. However, as shown in this video and my experiences, this pilot custom 823 medium writes just like most juicy western mediums.
Thank you everyone for your comments, experiences, suggestions, and inputs! I appreciate all of it!

    There are no standards for what makes a nib a fine, medium, broad, etc. Some companies try to follow the same 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9 that mechanical pencils use, but no company always gets this correct. A very wet nib will usually leave a wider line than a dry nib, even though both are sized identically. Ink also matters, often a LOT. You really can't accurately compare nibs unless all the pens you're comparing all have the same ink.

  • @KenchanKrafts

    @KenchanKrafts

    Жыл бұрын

    That is true, there are lots of factors that go into how thick or thin a pen will write. A nib's wetness, the feed, the ink, the paper you write on, and I'm sure there are more. And I should have prefaced some of those things that this wasn't meant to be completely accurate as I definitely didn't prepare all my pens with one ink and it isn't really a general rule, but rather a general trend between the Japanese and European nibs. Thanks for making those points, James! This is helpful information to add on to learn more about nib comparisons better!

    Useful video, Kenchan - exactly what I look for when figuring out which nib size to go for! One quibble / edit, in the event you do future videos testing line width: I think we all have a reflexive tendency, when using a ruler, to go over a line twice. (or - back and forth.) But for a width-test, this could result in a broader line than accurate.

    Thanks for your input and feedback!! I definitely had that thought through my head when I looked at it again in editing the video and realized I went over twice on some of the later lines. I will do my best to just do a single line and not go over letters for future videos for line comparisons (since I know I constantly am wanting to compare or know comparisons for future pen purchases, I will most likely do comparisons between other top brands for future videos). Thank you for watching and I'm glad this was a good start for you to look at for choosing nib size! :)

    @@KenchanKraftsThat would be nice if you use just one ink but i think it is too bothersome honestly. I think if you just let us know what ink you are using and add some comment that the ink is wet or dry side would be enough. Then, we are able to learn inks (or already know how the inks behave) and check the ink color in that pen as well. If i may ask one more favor, if you could write some chinese, japanese, or korean, please do. It helps a lot for viewers who write those letters. It would look fancy as well. I always enjoy your videos. Very helpful and calming!

    @@almighty858 Thank you for your thoughts about that! I appreciate that you point out the tediousness of doing the same ink in roughly 8 different pen brands and having to clean them all again. I like your idea and I'll be sure to write down the qualities of the ink along with their name to the right after drawing the line for each pen/ink in the future! As for character writing, I studied Japanese for two years in college, that was well over many years ago!! My main issue with Pilot Mediums is that despite being deliciously smooth, they’re very wet and broad writers. My handwriting is pretty small, and so the medium doesn’t work as well for me. So I just got the Custom Heritage 92 with the Japanese market-only Fine-Medium, and it’s absolutely perfect. Writes finely like a drier steel Pilot medium or a medium point Capless, but is less scrapey than a Fine. It’s the perfect balance to me.

    A shame America doesn’t carry Pilot’s Fine-medium. Or the soft nibs. Well the soft ones might pose a bit of warranty issues because they’re easier to ruin by user error, but they’re so nice! I’d love to try a fine medium pilot sometime soon! Hopefully when Pilot comes to SF pen show. I after that Pilot’s medium is way too broad. It’s basically a western broad with the right ink and paper.

    Usefull. I have the 823 in a broad nib, and love it. I do have a #15 in a custom 743, which I also like. Ku-jaku is one of my favorite inks. THe trick to get a 100% fill is to fill it some then turn the pen nib up, and pull rod back. Carefully push rod into pen, until ink is up to the section. Turn upside down, put in ink, and push in. Warning: Careful - you could get ink all over the place if you are not careful pushing in rod with nib up. Pilot recomends that end users do NOT disassemble pen.. This has been known to cause cracks, and can void warrantee.

    @@KenchanKrafts I did get the Pilot Custom 823 in a medium and it does write a bit broader than expected. I do notice a difference with different inks and paper, however. It is very juicy for sure and very smooth, with just a touch (very little ) of feedback depending on paper. This is my first gold nib, so may have something to do with my experience. This pen is quality for sure and I do love it. But I know what you are talking about with the medium nib. I don't want to buy the fine in this pen, because I generally do not like fine nibs. So I will experiment with different inks and paper and try to find the perfect combo with this medium nib. I also notice a little nib creep with some inks that are wetter. Thanks for the excellent video, Sir. I also have the Pilot Custom 823 with a Medium nib, and I can honestly say that it writes way more broad from all LAMY steel Broads nibs that I have (e.g., z50, z52, z53). I compared with LAMY because of the spread of those nibs worldwide. The above Pilot pen, is an excellent pen, very smooth, but on the downsides, it eats up ink like crazy, and also I do not like the fact that you need to have unscrewed the back finial so that it performs as expected. The latter makes the pen feel loose and kind of “incomplete” to me.

    :D We shared the same experience and observations on the Medium nib then. A lot of other folks kept saying the C823 M writes like a western fine...it doesn't make sense to me. I think depending on the ink and paper, sometimes it might write like a western Fine, but in general, this Medium is just much broader than what we expect. I think a lot of other vacuum filler pens also have the knob at the top that needs to be screwed open for ink to shift from the large reservoir to the front, so that might be a normal thing, but annoying nonetheless. Hi Lisa, you're very welcome! I'm sure most, if not all, Pilot medium nibs write a similarly large size like shown in my video. You can control it with paper or a drier ink. Other folks have stated that their Pilot Custom 823 medium nibs write the same as western Fines, but I think that probably applies to the wettest of Western fines (Pelikan, Aurora, Montegrappa). My Pelikan Fine does write quite similar to my Custom 823 Medium. You will not go wrong with a Pelikan!!! Pelikan and Pilots are two of the smoothest nibs in the industry!! And they come with pleasant feedback, too! You should try a Pelikan M800 Fine if you think you'd like the weight of the 823 and choose Pelikan instead :)

    Thanks for the video and really helpful. I just picked up the 823 jn M and only owned these medium nib pens- MB Edgar Allan Poe, ST Dupont line D and Lamy Al-star in medium. I was expecting broader lines and being really wet but it’s not, which is ok so it’s different from my other pens. Do you feel like the 823 pen body is slippery and would jump out of your hands? Happened to me and glad it landed on desk!

    Hi Eliza! Thanks for watching and commenting! I’m happy it helped you choose the medium. If you use a wetter ink and twist open the knob at the end of the 823, that should increase the flow and wetness of the ink. From my experience it’s a fairly average flowing pen that regulates flow very well among all inks I’ve tried. It’s not slippery for me, but I have dry hands. The Twsbi diamond is slippery for me…which is so odd since they’re both sturdy resin plastic. But thank goodness your pen is safe!! 😩🥰 The 823 should be broader than your al star medium if it’s the same ink, but otherwise pretty similar.

    Hey Aaron, xD welcome back - you've found my older video with the Pilot Customs. Pilot Custom Fine writes finer than Jowo/Western fines. And my Pilot Custom Medium writes broader than every jowo/western fine I have, except for Pelikan Fine. Pelikan Fines write like mediums, so I would say the Pilot Custom Medium writes like a Western Medium. On my very coated paper like Clairfontaine, the nibs write thinner than on my Tomoe River paper - so paper will affect how they write as well. I would say that if you're used to a Platinum Medium (which are thinner than Pilot and Sailor mediums), maybe go with the Custom 823 Fine and open the knob at the back to increase wetness and flow. The 823 Medium writes very wet and juicy on Tomoe River paper.

But I have since trained myself to write with a tripod grip and I promise you, my later videos should look better! I still have a heavy hand, but I am also training on writing softer and with more gentle touch. I also wonder back, how the heck did the pen even write with my terrible angle, but I noticed that a lot of folks also write with their fountain pens at this angle. If you rotate the camera/paper clockwise 90 degrees, the nib is facing north but it is still at a higher angle than suggested, but instead of writing left to right, the strokes are being written right to left and each letter is written from top to bottom. I was consistent with the angle of my nib, so there was no issues with skipping or bad ink flow to the page. However, this angle did cause issues for some flourishing, which I have learned was my fault and not the nib!! :) Apologies for my angle of writing -- I totally get it!!

    I definitely want to try the custom heritage since I prefer flat top pens and I would love to try a soft nib from pilot. As for writing with less pressure, I have found that I just generally write with more pressure since that is how I’ve been writing my whole life. Fountain pens do write under their own weight as the ink is very different from ball points! I’ve had to train myself to write with less pressure since fountain pens are made to be written that way, but then there are those flex pens where you need to manually apply pressure to create line variations, too. And sometimes I write harder when the ink pen combo’s overall flow is drier (I.e. very bad flowing shimmer inks). I’m not perfect yet at writing gently with my fountain pens, so that’s why stiffer nibs are usually my go-to nibs! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Will update my thoughts on the pilot custom heritage or urushi once I feel them either at the Chicago pen show in two weeks or the SF pen show, since Japanese brands are probably not going to be at the Chicago show.

    Hi! Yes that is always so frustrating to be indecisive with so many reviews and people's experiences may not become the same as yours might be. But for me, I started with lamy as well. I thought those were smooth. And then I got my first MF sailor and it was so different because of the high feedback. After writing with Sailors more, I believe they are smoother than Lamys but they feel nowhere as smooth as the Custom 823 f and m. I assure you, you will come to love the classic cigar shape of the custom 823 when you write with it. I think the amber in fine would be a great choice. If you truly want flat top, I believe you can probably go for the pilot custom heritage in a fine nib! I don't think they are as smooth as the 823 though, but it's pilot. It's bound to still be smooth!

    thank you for your inputs, im already leaning towards the 823 seeing most users like them so much, i was looking for someone like you who own both pens since most people only have the pilots and only tried the sailor for a little bit. guess i only need a little nudge from someone who use both of these pens with more/longer experience with them. truly it's hard to pick when you can't test them for yourself and these pens aren't that cheap to try ang wing it, coming from a safari to these pens is a huge leap for me. thanks again for your inputs you've earned my sub, will get the 823 (f) probably in transparent black and the iroshizuku syo-ro.

    Yes and no xD I have used a very dry ink in my Amber 823 Medium before and the current ink is FWP Steeped Umber, which is an average flowing ink. Both wrote in the same line widths and both flowed out very nicely because the C823 has a very well flowing feed and nib. The line width is just that much bigger in general. You can see that the Fine writes very thinly even with a wet ink like Pilot Iroshizuku, and probably slightly thinner with a less wet ink. The 823 Medium does allow you to see more of an ink's properties, though, so I appreciate that about the thicker line that it makes.

    You're absolutely right! I realize the way I was describing it in that part of the video was a confusing way to articulate what I meant, but that is how I understand it, too. Western Mediums are typically a Japanese Broad, therefore, Japanese nibs need to be 1 size up to match with the western nibs. I think that was what I was trying express, but apologies if how I said it was confusing! (the text in the video to clarify myself probably didn't help either!)

  • @KenchanKrafts

    @KenchanKrafts

    Жыл бұрын

    That's true! I forgot to mention that in the part about disassembling it to relubricate, but that also most likely won't happen until after the limited warranty is up. I purchased mine from Japan, so it does not have international warranty with it anyways. But for folks who do buy it from a retailer with a warranty card, disassembly will void the warranty. But again, the relubrication probably won't need to happen for a long time.

  • @KenchanKrafts

    Hey there! Are you new here to fountain pens and the hobby? Fountain pens can become a hobby of collecting different pens that are made of different materials and look different. They do sometimes write differently, too. Not every single one puts down the same line width. Some prefer a broader width and others much thinner (like mechanical pencil leads of .5, .7, or 1.0 lead sizes). And yes, at the end of the day, they all do the same thing - write, but like any other hobby - such as collecting keyboards or watches, etc. - they all do the same thing, you just end up liking to have multiple that suit your liking. And over time, these pens can be sold to others when you don't like certain ones anymore and retain a good portion of their value. I use them to plan, jot down notes, journal, reflect, and just doodling. Different pens can hold different colored inks so that I don't have to change inks in one pen constantly. But you don't have to do any of those, you can simply just have 1 fountain pen and be content with that, too!

Otherwise I am generally pretty light with closing the rest of my screw cap pens. The platinum has a slip and seal so I will need to test to see if it seals itself tightly or if I’m screwing it too tightly myself. Thanks for noticing that piece of detail, Mikey!

    I really tried to enjoy your video, but your movement of your hands was just so distracting! 823s are great writing fountain pens, and I am considering getting another in a F nib, vs a M nib. Look, I don’t have a KZread channel, and haven’t a clue to how difficult it may be to produce a video. If I would suggest anything, it’s to always do a practice run through before you shoot the video. If the object is to educate & inform, then know your material as best you can, practice losing movements that are distracting from that goal. It’s our eyes that pull in the most information, not what we hear. Your audio seemed good though 👍. I’ve only watched this one of your videos, and will view a few more. Thanks for the effort.

    Hello, thank you for your suggestions. I will definitely take them into account as I continue to learn and grow in my video making. I will admit that I talk with my hands a lot and it shows on camera and that it can be distracting for some, but I believe a lot of people talk with their hands in this hobby, as well. This is the first time I've heard that my hand movements are too much for someone to enjoy my video. For clarity sake, I can most definitely work on creating less hand movements on my more educational/helpful videos, but I think most people could still appreciate the spirit of my intentions in sharing my experiences so that they can make a better and more informed decision.
