    Great test in a real-world scenario that is easy to understand and assess! I actually just ordered a Champion dual fuel 4500 based on comments I read on Amazon and other places but had not seen your video yet. Nice to have more or less of a confirmation of my decision. Champion has a 30% sale going on right now in their Amazon store so that helped push me their way, too....

    I like the battery charger built kinda a cool idea not that it’s hard to pull the cord but it helps the battery get full life verses if you store it for 6-8 months more then likely the battery is dead and also damaged as they don’t like to drop below a certain voltage. Although not sure why it didn’t come with a small lithium like the champion and several others now. Thanks for the comment and thanks again for watching 👍🏼😀

    Wow, talk about a timely comparison. I was about to pull the trigger on the Westinghouse 4500 and then just for the hell of it I started to research Champion as I never gave it much thought. I decided to go with the Champion 4500. You confirmed many things in your comparison for me. One thing that Champion stands out with is their customer service. You can call them anytime and they are there to help. Their also assembled here and their headquarters isn't far from me here in California. I gave serious thought to the 4650 and the 5500. I'm planning on going with propane and the difference is huge (14 hours versus 21) as far as the run times between the 4500 and the 5500. I will get three amps less going with Propane, (30 versus 27) but to power everything in my home in an emergency situation I only need a bit over 19 amps so for me the champion 4500 is the clear winner.

    Wow glad this helped you out. And the 4650/4500 regular or dual fuel is still a favorite. And yes champion still has great customer service from everything I’m hearing. And I also recommend that unit over the Westinghouse as it still suffers from problems. Good choice and congrats. Always run a fuel additive unless you stay with propane..👍🏼

    I have the dual fuel westinghouse all of 4 months old. All I can say is, I had a transfer switch installed and it ran all 6 circuits without issue. Boiler, garage door, etc without issue. I had none of the issues that were common problems of say a year or so ago. No rusty fill or choke issues. Truly a nice generator. I also own my trusty 10 year old honda 2000. The westinghouse is equal in quality to the honda. The honda will never die, lol. But having the remote and dual fuel is invaluable.

    You can always look into a propane only unit from onan but those are not cheap. A 5500 watt unit can be $5000 If you are needing bigger loads and using it all the time you need to size up a lot so the gen is not over working day after day. Are you running one AC unit or two?? Need to determine your loads. And you should live between 25-75% of gens running capacity… If you are always around 75% and higher get a bigger gen

    I once bought a Champion 3100 inverter. 1st one out the door would not run smooth so I took it back to the store. 2nd one was good for a year before the carb started the same issue as the first so Champion sent me a new carb which fixed it for 2 years and now it needs a small amount of choke to run right. I pulled the carb and cleaned it fully assembled it to have it run exactly the same. I always started it monthly for 30 minutes and used premium no ethanol gas. I also bought a Westinghouse 2000 watt inverter at the same time I bought the Champion. Never had an issue yet with it. Just bought a Westinghouse iGen 4500 about 5 months ago. Zero issues so far so I gave my Champion to my father in law who loves it and doesn’t mind running it slightly choked. Champion has amazing customer service not sure about Westinghouse as I have never used them.

    For people wanting to know how the noise of the Westinghouse actually sounds, it’s a lot like an idling four stroke motorbike. Louder than the makers suggest. If it’s running outside, you’ll hear it from inside the average house, but it’s not a horrible noise. The only downside I’ve found so far, is it won’t start at all if the battery’s flat. It requires a small amount of battery charge to allow the auto choke to engage, even if pull starting! If the battery’s flat, you’ll need to jump it to even pull start the unit. I find this a really poor feature, as many old lawnmowers have an auto choke that’s activated by the pull start function.

    The slightly higher running voltage of the Westinghouse translates to better efficiency: higher Voltage means Less Current (amps) and Wattage. The larger gas tank also will last longer. The higher Peak power probably prevents the overload from tripping- a good thing if you dont like loosing power (an overload will still trip breakers in the trailer anyway).

  • @johnnysweekends

    @johnnysweekends

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yup all true plus the bigger engine will work a little less, even though it’s slightly less fuel efficient I bet run times are not much different but depends how much you use it will help you decide.

  • @joebrown9621

    The Champion has abit less running watts so under the same load that slight voltage drop difference is negligible.. Westinghouse has a 48% larger tank more run time but efficiency goes to the Champion as 48% more fuel would give it a run time of nearly 21 hours vs 18 plus typically if champing u turn in at 8 pm by the next morning at 9 am the generator will still be running..

    25 years of gas (oh my, beans!!) and working to keep it fresh in generator or completely drained, I’m greatly looking forward to only using propane with next gen. Wish 30 or 40 lb cylinders were common. I had two 12/2 completely separate wiring circuits into prior house, that old Honda gen could do 16A each, and had 4 emergency only outlets sprinkled around inside the house. The furnace had 20A plug, when power out, just move the plug to next door emergency outlet. Completely separate system from all regular power feeds, NO way it could back feed. I had concerns on dirty power into circuit board of furnace, TV, etc, but they did hold. Look forward to clean inverter peace of mind. Happy here, newish furnace with DC blower fan, soft start, it takes less than 900W to run. As you all know, we have to exercise these generators at least every 3 months to be sure will run when main power is out. I guess for those using gas, “they” say avoid ethanol, use recreational vehicle gas. And add stabil. Turn gas off, run dry and make sure carb bowl is drained. Likely you all know that, preaching to choir. Looks like a local Cabella’s has the dual fuel inverter I want, then if any problem, would be easier return for fix or replace. Have a good day!! And thanks for additional info. It shall be comforting just to know a backup is ready. If some dang hacker messed with grid, all generators would sell out in a blip, none to be had. “A good scout is a prepared scout”.

    @@johnnysweekends sound and fuel economy isn’t that big of a deal. Obviously I don’t want a loud open frame generator. Im just looking for something that will last me for years. I’ve had several Honda’s, obviously they are great, I have a 2200i currently but that won’t run my rv a/c. I’ve had a predator 3500, yes it worked good. But I just don’t see it lasting forever. The predator has built a good reputation for reliability and being pretty darn quiet. Some have reported several thousand hours. But care for the product helps to. I would like to see a few updates on the predator like Rv plug better wheels and handle. Maybe make a 4000 unit or 4500 unit now. Most all these gens run the same Chinese engines and carburetors only thing difference is the electronics they come with. Most all these units still run a 212cc engine from what ever manufacture they contract with……. Rato engineering, Loncin, Lifan, Dajian, and more. 212cc being most common. The Westinghouse and onan4500 which are the same run a 224cc engine. How long that will last who knows. Most all these seem to be lasting longer and longer. Making sales for Honda and Yamaha loose a big market due to so many sizes and options available. Again customer service and warranty is also something to be considered and champion according to several viewers have said good things along with Wen. Predator every one says they have the warranty and just swap it out if they need or want so….🤷‍♂️

    Johnny, need a little help here. I just purchased the Champion 4650 Dual Fuel. While reading the User’s Manual I came across this Warning in a couple of places (Page 15 & 28) about the 12V DC outlet. “Do not operate a device while it is plugged in to the 12V DC outlet”. The manual also states (Page 15) the 12V DC, 8A (Automotive) port, “May be used to supply electrical power for operation of 12 Volt DC, 8 Amp electrical loads.” On Page 28 it also states, “The 12V DC outlets(s) can be used with supplied accessories and other commercially available 12V DC automotive style plugs. Confirm the input voltage of your item ia at least 12-24V DC.” My questions is what are the limitations of this 12V DC outlet? I have a small air pump with an automotive style plus attached to it. I’ll probably never use it but could I plug it into this inverter’s 12V DC outlet and use it?

    Thanks for the great side by side…these two gen’s are the two I’m currently researching. Your video has helped me decide to get the Champion. Overall the reviews I have found seem better on the champion. The Westinghouse which is also rebranded as a Cummins has had some problems with the automatic choke and warranty depending on where you can be an issue with the Westinghouse also. Champion seems to be a better build as there were very few design and build issues with the reviews I found. Looking at this review the champion seemed to hold the voltage/amp tolerances better. Also it shut off more consistent with advertised specs which I interpret as better design and build. Longer and higher delivery isn’t always better as it can overload components if they aren’t robust enough to withstand the load.

    Well the fuel is easy. When on propane the gen has no idea how to read a external tank because obviously there is no sending unit on the propane tank so the gen doesn’t know.. The hours are a little weird and I wonder if that is because again you only run it on propane but once the engine starts and runs it should activate the meter and start ticking. Not sure what they would have it hooked to but normally all it needs to see is a pulse signal. So not sure on the hours unless you wanna run gas for a bit and see…. Sorry couldn’t help further.

    Thanks for doing this test. I've been cross shopping the Predator 3500 and the Westinghouse igen4500 for a while now. I went back and watched two of your previous videos that compared the Predator 3500 to a Wen and a Champion generator. While the Predator videos had information about the max amps before overloading, I couldn't find any decibel readings for the Predator 3500 while it is under load. In this video, both of the generators were around 73 db when under load, is that a similar number to the Predator 3500? I know the Predator is quieter when idle and not under load, but I'm curious how they perform when the A/C is running on those hot days in the 1500 - 2000W range.

  • @johnnysweekends

    @johnnysweekends

    I don’t have any of the predator 3500 in the 2000 watt range but over all the predator is quieter all across the board but as the power draw goes up the gap in decibels closes as it gets to max load… So predator would be say 73 db at max and the others are at 74-75 db at max give or take 1 db for error. At low rpms and mid rpms is where the predator typically shine. But you can get a lot more power now for the price and champion typically has the best customer service and warranty from many reporting viewers. Hope this helps…👍🏼😀

I jumped right on that and got the wireless electric start gas, since I have no need for dual fuel capability. Now they are $1000 and $1100. @@johnnysweekends That depends on how much of a spec chaser one is. The 98lb (dry) weight of the Westinghouse is not exactly light. Not a whole lot of difference between 98lb and 118lbs, since in both cases you are already better off with two people (or a hoist) to get it in and out of a truck bed or on a rack. Add fuel in the tank, another 20+ lbs . Oil, add another 2 lbs. The base weight delta is irrelevant. Both are too heavy to easily tote around. Its the same thing with noise. People make such a big deal with +2dB this, and -5dB that. They are all too loud for it to make any meaningful difference. The extra height, however, is going to be a difference maker for some people. Most full size truck beds with covers are right at 20-20.5 inches. The new unit is 21 inches. That is the difference between it fits and it does not fit with the cover down. OTOH, larger fuel tank might mean in some cases you don't need to bring an extra fuel jug, which can save space and inconvenience. The power output difference is considerable. The new Champion does not have a fuel gauge, not that it matters. Fuel gauges are never really all that helpful.

  • @johnnysweekends

    @johnnysweekends

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yea the Westinghouse is a little heavier then stated and not to mention all stated weights are nice but not real world. You need gas in it, plus oil and a battery. So correct add all the weight for that. But most these gens I review are all around the same weight, 100-105 empty but only needing gas. 118 will be a difference if that’s the actual weight empty. And I just found out they will not ship the new champion to California…😕 epa emissions thing which soon that will spread nation wide I bet in a few years. It’s like that for several gens I tried to buy just for fun to see if I could. Some I could, some I couldn’t….. odd. Looks like I’ll go across the border to get stuff…😂

    I don't like turbo engines in cars/trucks, like a turbo V-6 vs. a naturally aspirated V-8. The turbo has to work harder do to the same work, and won't last as long. I've read the WestH has a smaller engine on the 2200 compared to the Honda. This seems the Champ is a smaller engine trying to do more work. idk

    @@johnnysweekends Thank you much. I've heard the 2200 WestH has issues too. I heard one review say, comparing it to the Honda, that he knew an engineer who looked at both, and the WestH was made of toy parts. Now, supposedly the 3500 WestH is a COMPLETELY different build and quality, but, idk. I do want the bigger motor that won't have to work as hard, but, is the Honda worth all of THAT, compared to the lesser models, if it's not used EVERY WEEK???

  • @johnnysweekends

    @johnnysweekends

    @filoIII it depends what you need. And not every westinghouse unit is made by the same company. Westinghouse and onan just put stickers on the units from a company they are made from in china. Same with some other models. So the 2200 is probably made from a different company. You dont know till you get them and see which company made them. When it comes to buying a gen it’s more of what you need and how much you are going to use it. The onan 4500 is a good unit. Most the stuff from champion is also good. Genmax lines seems to be getting better and better. But you dont want to buy to big or two small. A large unit will just burn to much fuel for running low loads. Same with a small unit running almost full capacity which is not good for it. You wanna try to find something where your loads are in the 30-70% range most the times.

    The reason I think most are on RVs is due to cost and convenience. Imagine turning off your main breaker to you home every time you test a new unit. You computer shuts off, fridge, maybe heater, internet and more. Clocks reset and all that. Obviously a hassle right..? So the Rv uses loads similar to what you would use in your home. You just have to know what the watt ratings are. Because everything will be different. Like my fridge to your fridge. And more. Plus the Rv is easy as it’s meant to have power on and off. And if something fries I would rather not have it be my main home where I live. Sure it’s not exact but it still shows the generator is able to handle the loads it was intended for, and voltage stays at acceptable range and more. That’s my reason anyway. I prefer let interruptions to my home main power service when I can help it..👍🏼
